This place is hopping at 9:30 am on a Tuesday. I had the ham & cheese on sesame bagel. The only thing that would've made it better is if I had asked them to grill the ham. The parking lot was full. Lots of young adults eating here so you know it's good. The lady at the counter was nice. She noticed I brought my own Diet Coke and asked me if I needed a cup of ice. Bodo's Bagels has become a Charlottesville institution, so I am told by folks who have lived in the area for a while. They have three locations, and short of a visit to the Five Boroughs, they serve the best bagel you will find within 200 miles. They make them the New York way - boil first, then bake. But it doesn't end there. Once you pick your bagel type, from among 10 varieties, you move on to schmear, or cream cheese varieties, of which they offer 11, including Neufchatel, jalapeno-lime and a lox/cream cheese spread (regular lox is available, too, because it has to be if you're doing NY style right). Then there are the specialty sandwiches with deli meats and cheeses, and other concoctions, like a salmon/whitefish salad, avocado chopped or spread, Kalamata olive tapenade, and of course, chopped liver. We sampled the turkey (smoked or roasted, your choice) with provolone, and one of their egg breakfast bagels, with fresh-cooked eggs (2, I think), omelet-style, folded onto the bagel of your choice with a meat mixed in (our dining companion chose sausage), and your choice of cheese melted onto it. One in our party also had a sesame-seed bagel, toasted with butter and cream cheese, which was positively piled with schmear. We added a side of redskin potato salad, which was prepared vinegar style. It was fresh, but not to everyone's liking. You may feel differently if you like that style. The folks behind the counter are extra-friendly, and one of them helped The One Who Loves Kids and Dogs decide what to order, taking her from beginning (whole-grain wheat bagel) to end (brown mustard on the side). The menu features a daily soup, too, and I got myself a nice New England Clam Chowder that did not skimp on the clams. They were of good quality, not overcooked, and there were plenty of them in there such that there was a pile of them in the bottom of the bowl as I neared the end. We tried to beat the crowd by going at an off hour on a Friday, and chose the location farthest from the UVA campus, but found it still packed. The staff has this down to a science, though, and moved everyone through quickly. You place an order at the counter, and then wait for your number to be called. As dozens of orders flew through the kitchen, ours emerged just as we'd ordered it without much of a wait. To sum up, service and selection here are top-notch, and the product is near greatness. I only knock off one star because I don't know how you beat the crowds. It's not the place to go for a comfortable, relaxing meal, because someone inevitably wants your table. I guess what they need is more locations, or bigger buildings for the ones they have. Popularity is a good problem to have, I guess. Bodo's is a great choice for college students, though, as everything is filling and cheap. We fed five people for $25, and no one complained about getting too little. read more

While there seems to be a massive following in Charlottesville for this small chain we still can't figure out what the buzz is all about. After eating breakfast and lunch here we discovered the bagels taste like normal bagels. In fact, we found them no different then what you would find at other Virginia chains like Manhattan Bagel, Einstein Bros and Bruegger's Bagels. Having eaten at dozens of bagel shops in New York and New Jersey the bagels here didn't taste anything like what they do up north where people crave them. With that said you can bet that the bagels here are going to be way better than something like Dunkin Donuts. I would place them at par with Panera. What you can guarantee is there's going to be a lot of locals around and you'll receive friendly service. No one's going to argue that this is an affordable place to grab a bagel or some kind of a bagel sandwich in the morning. The lunch sandwiches are average to. You can bet they're going to pile a whole bunch of meat on them, however we were disappointed with microwaved bacon vs crispy, fresh cooked bacon and other items that didn't seem like they were made in house like a 5 star place would do. In short, this is a great place to come to get average bagels whether it's early in the morning or midday and if you're from the area you'll probably think it's wonderful. read more

Being a UVa alum, it's hard not to like this place. Cheap, but delicious, it's the right combo for the broke (okay, very few students at Uva are actually broke--their parents still give them allowance lol) college student. Oh Bodo's, how I love thee. I cannot put into words how addicted I am to these bagels. I come to Charlottesville randomly for work and almost every time I get Bodo's. My favorite is lox and cream cheese on everything and feta on garlic and it never disappoints! They must use a ladle to apply the cream cheese because they DOUSE them in it unless you tell them otherwise, but I think it's delicious. The Emmet and Preston locations are great and convenient for me, but the employees at The Corner can be dicks, so I avoid that one. It is 100% true about the line moving fast in the mornings. I usually go in the evening and they'll have my order of 5 bagels ready before other's that were already waiting! I've even thought of driving from Richmond just for Bodo's, but I know, I know - it's worth the wait. Yes, I have tried Lamplighter's lox and cream cheese and it was good - don't get me wrong, I just prefer and think that Bodo's is better and I probably wouldn't want to try another bagel place in the Richmond area anyway. No, I've never had a New York bagel, but when I do, then my opinion might change. Until then, Bodo's has my heart. Still need to get a t-shirt too. read more

There's a reason why Bodo's Bagels gets almost consistently 5-star reviews. There's a reason why Bobo's has been in business since well before I was a UVa. Student in the early 90's and a reason why they are still going strong today. There's a reason why native NY/NJ'ers who come to UVa or are transplanted to the Charlottesville area flock here, and why every New Yorker who insists that a good bagel can't be found below the Mason-Dixon line eat their words after eating at Bodo's. It's because they're THAT good. This was our breakfast stop with the wife and family on the Sunday morning after a UVA football game. Like most mornings, it was busy ... but not overly-crowded. It's a "locals place" that moves fast and has a vast menu, so it can be a bit intimidating at first. But take your time and soak it all in - there's no pressure or rush from the friendly staff or patrons. Still, not wanting to hold up the line or crowd the entrance, I jumped in and ordered the first thing I liked - a plain bagel with lox and plain cream cheese. And sometimes, it takes a perfectly executed classic menu item to truly demonstrate how great a place is. Perfect bagel, good quality lox, and a lot of love. My wife also made a rush decision of a plain bagel with honey pecan spread, but was also very happy with the result. My father-in-law was the only one to go with a traditional breakfast sandwich and gave it high approval. There's a ton of options here - plenty of great breakfast and traditional sandwich options, variety of spreads, and different condiments. And at the end, our breakfast for 4 rang in at around $18. You're not going to get the amount of food, or the quality, for that price ANYWHERE. This place is a quintessential Charlottesville landmark, or should I say, food-mark? It's a no frills bagel place that offers a wide arrangement of bagels, sides, sandwiches, salads, and a few choice soups. The menu is one of the most affordable (and tasty) in town. A few favorite items would include the Everything bagel with the Deli Egg which has a tasty meaty center encased in steaming hot eggs. The Cobb side is another favorite for BB's sweet zesty use of corn and herbs. If you're seriously into cream cheese like I am, you'll also appreciate the delicious combination of cream cheese styles ranging from Jalapeno lime to sweet pecan. In my 30 something years of life, I've lived all over the East coast and the West Coast; I grew up in C'ville, went to school and worked in NY, Boston, San Diego, San Francisco, and now living in Los Angeles...and travelled all over the States for fun..I am a foodie. ...This is the best bagel place in the country for flavor and price. The flavors are just 'on' here. And it's really cheap. You go anywhere in the country now days, a sub-par bagel sandwich and a drink will cost you about $10. Not here. It has a very lively staff and atmosphere. I don't have much ties left with the town of C'ville anymore...but sometimes I think about going back to C'ville just for Bodo's Bagels. I love Bodo's. We went to this location for the first time this week, as I was craving a delish bagel. Weirdly enough, it's about 1.5 miles from our house (maybe 2?) but I had only been to the Corner location in the past. This location did not disaapoint - friendly service, cleaning dining area, fun 50s music playing and of course, the bagels. I had an egg & cheddar on an everything bagel, and hubs had the deli egg on wheat. We shared a Cleo salad (sooo good) and a tangerine seltzer. Dinner for ~$10! Cannot be beat!! read more

I loved Bodo's (well actually, I didn't like Bodo's at first because I never ordered the right thing) before I became vegan, so I was really sad I couldn't eat it anymore (because cream cheese), BUT they have plenty of meat-free sandwiches, which I never noticed before. I got the NoBull, which is a "locally made lentil-based veggie patty," on a plain bagel (I'm boring, I know) and it was pretty good. I think it would have been even better with a spread, which I'll definitely add next time. So glad I don't have to give up this Charlottesville favorite. P.S. Came here on a random Sunday morning in the summer and it was still super crowded. I came to Charlottesville to see two people fall in love. And instead I got the worst bagel of my life. My girlfriend, the love of my life, ordered what she thought to be a standard egg and cheese sandwich. Upon opening the sandwich in the car, we found the bagel to contain a week's worth of pesto. Under no circumstances would anyone ever order pesto on a breakfast sandwich, yet alone that much pesto. She didn't know what to do. She stared at the bagel in complete dismay, and her experience for the weekend ended on a sour note. Just when we thought we were out of the woods, our driver, William, opened up his breakfast sandwich. What he discovered could only be described as an abortion of breakfast cuisines. What was supposed to be a pastrami bagel was in reality a shrimp quiche. We pulled up the menu online and Bodos doesn't even have a shrimp quiche. We are on our way back to New York now.
