I have an open-gym membership and have 24-7 access to the gym (perfect for my schedule), NICE equipment, and killer atmosphere. The part I love most is the family I joined. Since day one, as an outsider, I felt welcomed and valued as a member. Justin, the owner and head coach, is knowledgeable, humble, and just a genuinely good person. Went to check out this unique gym for the first time with my husband today…read more Emily and Ryan greeted us warmly with a smile. Felt at home straight away. Ryan explained that we would be tracked with a heart monitor throughout our workout, had us fill out intake forms, then provided us further info on what the circuit interval training would be about for us today. How we would spend 3 minutes at each station, 2 workouts at stations 3-9 and the whole workout would be about 30 minutes with 30 second breaks between stations. The goals was to reach a maximum heart rate that is comfortable for each of us. I did well with the walking and jogging but once we hit the more intense leg workouts that kicked my butt this first time. Emily was my main trainer and Ryan worked mostly with my husband. This is very specialized training services and meal prep and plan. The trainers are skilled and all have great personalities and are truly there to help and maximize the members experience. It's nice that there's no scheduled training session and you can come and go as you please, but still know a trainer will be keeping you on task to meet your health and body goals. I pushed myself too hard with the leg exercises and thought I would be sick and collapse, took a break and Emily was patient with me and gave me breaks when needed. She gave me some alternate workouts to keep my heart rate up but not as intense for the last 2 workouts. Emily explained the importance of dynamic stretching at the beginning of the workout to warm up the muscles and body and then to do static stretches at the end of the workout. It was a really good, intense and fun exercise and nicer to have a trainer/cheer leader in your corner. We both signed up today. Monthly plan is $69.99, no risk since it's month to month and $70 for the heart monitor. Your heart monitor checks you in as it's attached to your name and account and they have monitors that show your heart rate during your circuit interval workout. You can also add an app and use the same monitor when you are not in the gym too. Now I have to workout more to get through the intense mountain climb and squat, squat jumps and lunge exercises.

Thanks to my Aunt De-De and Uncle Warren, I was talked into getting up pretty early last Saturday…read moremorning to meet them for a workout at Art of Strength. I didn't know what to expect other than an intense workout, and that's exactly what I received! The class I attended was split into two smaller groups. One went with Mike and one with Peter. I went with Peter and my workout included cardio (with a stationary bike, rowing machine, ski machine, and jumping jacks), lunges, upper body using a medicine ball and ropes, and a ton of squats. I liked how we kept switching exercises so I didn't get bored at all. I also liked that Peter took into account injuries of those in our group and gave them alternative exercises that were right for their situation... trainers / instructors don't always do that. The folks in Mike's group (including my aunt, uncle, cousin, brother, and a few friends) were all out of breath and dripping sweat by the end of their workout. I could tell that Mike's reputation is to be tough and kind of a smart-ass, but it works. He's a huge motivator for those in the gym. I loved the energy at AOS and I would totally workout here if I lived in Michigan full time. I was a little nervous after the workout that I'd be too sore to stand up at my sister's wedding that evening, but I felt great and had a fabulous time at the wedding... Thanks again to Peter for the workout and to Aunt De-De for motivating me to get my ass to AOS that morning!
