I've done a body fat test with the laser through the bicep method, the hydrostatic method, and now the body spec method. This is by far the most accurate reading and although it was dreadful seeing my body fat go from 11.6 to 19 I was advised to not compare apples to oranges since all other methods are different- which is fair. I've had a few DEXA scans performed over the last year by BodySpec's mobile truck, as well as their newly offered RMR test at their West LA facility. Each time I quickly got data that's very helpful for designing my workout plans, diet, and assessing progress. The tests are convenient, with no need to change into a swim suit or abstain from exercise or food for an extended period of time like I had to with a prior Bod Pod test. The DEXA results are also much more detailed than the single body fat % number I got from the Bod Pod. The report shows exactly how much lean and fat mass you have in particular areas, as well as bone health. It's great that BodySpec offers a way for people to get tests like these anytime, without having to get a doctor's referral or be a subject in a trial. All the staff members I've met are friendly, and Jason definitely knows how to apply the test results to your workout or diet. The prices are quite reasonable too I love seeing the changes over time, and plan to continue getting regular tests to track my progress. read more

Great facility. Lots of parking. Very knowledgable and friendly fitness/nutrition experts. They took me back on-time and were very efficient to get my RMR test done and go over my results with me immediately following. My only complaint is that they are closed Fridays and have limited early morning availability making if difficult to schedule appointments, especially if you are fasting for the RMR test. Went in for a DXA scan and encountered the rudest girl working the machine. I was in a good mood and making small talk when I laid down on the machine. I was then instructed to "put your arms at your side" (my arms where already at my side so I looked at her confused). Apparently you need to know how to read minds before getting a DXA scan here because seconds later she screamed "arms at your side" like a psycho and made angry movements to show me what she meant by it the first time. Had I known how to read minds I could've avoided being screamed at. It was so awkward and weird that somebody can scream at somebody for no reason. It was at this moment I decided to not say another word to her and make her feel the awkward silence. When I left I felt that his was not enough. I reached out to the owner and left a message. This type of behavior is unacceptable and I will take my residual business elsewhere. The owner should know hat this type of behavior scares business away. I'm also canceling my upcoming VO2 and RMRs plus will not do them every 6 months like I told the other girl (who was very pleasant to deal with). A Screaming employee tells me they don't value my business. I'll find a company that does. read more

Pros: Best price for a DXA scan anywhere. The place is clean and you're in/out in about 20-30 minutes. Probably the most precise body fat measurement available that is not exorbitantly priced. Cons: Techs seem uninformed about the DXA scan. I understand that you're not a radiologist or a doctor but if your job is to run a a few machines, I expect them to at least know a few basics! For a company that is built on measuring things (it's name is body-spec...) the techs should know the precision and accuracy of their instrument. Or at least be able to direct me to something that answers basic questions about the machine. 1. When I ask about precision/accuracy I'm not interested in the error in measuring a phantom. Techs should understand the difference between this and real precision/accuracy/error. 2. When I ask about how hydration effects the results, I should get some kind of answer. 3. The fat vs muscle replicas are inaccurate. I get what you're trying to do but muscle is only 18% denser than fat, not 2x denser as those replicas suggest. If you buy anatomically correct models, the difference is not as dramatic. read more

A friend of mine gifted me a DXA scan, which I wanted to do mostly out of curiosity. I added a VO2 test to see where I stood performance-wise, as I'm a mildly competitive runner who'd like to stay competitive. I'm 49 and would characterize myself as fit, and have mostly no issues with my body image. The ladies who did my tests were very pleasant and explained the processes from start to finish. They went over the results with me afterwards. Everything was very professional and clear. Jason contacted me the same day to go over the results more, and to get a handle on what I was doing fitness and food-wise, and where I wanted to go. We went over everything - the test results, what they mean, how to work on things and improve. I now know where I stand (pretty damn good, actually) and what I need to do to improve. I have a solid understanding of nutrition from taking a couple nutrition classes (and good cooking skills), but if you don't, I'd highly recommend nutrition assistance. I'm going back periodically to monitor my progress and make sure I'm not back sliding - I have zero interest in being a couch potato or diabetic. This is great information to add to your understanding of your overall health. And, it's very affordable!! read more

The team also demonstrated commanding knowledge of the tests and results, and satisfactorily answered all of the questions that I had. Additionally, they set up an online profile for you so that you can reference your results later if you lose your hardcopies. Further, they also delivered to me the results in both a PDF and Excel spreadsheet format so I could conduct further analysis on test results over time. Great service and friendly staff. My workplace gave employees the chance to test on a DEXA through BodySpec and it was a great experience. Most of us had never seen or tested on a DEXA before, so it was very educational. Mitch, the DEXA technician, was very friendly and made you feel comfortable (it can be a bit awkward lying on the scanner for several minutes, but he was informative and answered all of my questions so the time went by quickly). After the scan, Mitch showed me how he made the cuts on the software to segment my body and printed out my results. Dan was the one who explained the results to everyone - also very helpful and informative. It's nice that they went above and beyond to make sure everyone understood their results and their bodies. I'd recommend Body Spec to anyone about to embark on a weight/fat loss program or new training regimen. If you really want to make changes in your body, you need to know what your goals are, but more importantly you need to know what your starting point is. Simply tracking body weight will not give you an accurate indicator of progress and can even be counterproductive as you build muscle. Other body fat measurements, (even hydro-static weighing) are very inaccurate and this can lead to frustration or a false sense of progress. DEXA scans are not only the most accurate means of measuring body composition, but they also provide additional information such as bone density and muscle imbalances that can indicate recent or impeding injuries. If you're serious about changing your body, do yourself a favor and buy 2 scans - one for now, another in 3 months. read more

I've now had 2 Body Spec Dexa scans and I can't stop raving about it. This is the only test that's given me a true measure of body fat percentage along with other body composition details. The scan is quiet, comfortable and painless. I actually enjoyed it had a 10 minute cat nap while the machine performed its scan. The mobile scanning RV was also very comfortable and air conditioned. Extremely great staff, they are all very knowledgeable. They answer a variety of questions and help you better understand your body and your needs and translate results. The scan was a great way for me to test my bodyfat before I went on a six-week Paleo Challenge. I will be back to track my progress. read more

I came to BodySpec for a baseline DXA scan and was very pleased with the experience. Appointments are booked and paid for online, so the actual office experience is painless: just show up, do your scan, chat about the results for a bit, and you're done. I was out the door within half an hour of the start of my appointment. Parking (street) was easy to find during my weekend appointment, but might be harder on weekdays (the surrounding neighborhood is permit parking only from 8-6 on weekdays). It took some convincing for me to sign up for a body scan. I was really worried the results would just send me to therapy. BUT I did it and am so happy I did. There is something about seeing raw data that can't be argued. It's the push I needed to take my fitness and training to the next level. I used to have all the excuses in the world for why I felt a little fluffy in certain areas. When I met with Bryce to go over the results, it gave me incentive to make a few tweaks in my diet and up some cardio in my workouts. Since then I have lost 8 lbs (which for someone of my size is substantial). I am looking forward to my follow up scan in a few weeks to see just how much I have lost in body fat.
