Not sure if this counts as a selfie but I couldn't resist!!

There seem to be a bunch of mixed reviews here. I must say I've loved every experience here. My first gazing ball came from here over ten years ago with a small concrete base and it is still the centerpiece of my back yard. This is NOT a place for children to wander alone. Use some common sense people. These 10 to 100 pound concrete pillars and creatures could be knocked over by a child and who will be blamed when a kid is injured? I'm sure the parents will blame the business and not their own irresponsibility. Keep your kids calm and by your side or leave them at home. It's just safety common sense. Really. The employees I've encountered have always been friendly and helpful. Although I've never brought an unattended child here so I've missed the darker side. I once needed a specific gift that they didn't have and they were able to find a source and order it in for me. Always great experiences here. I deducted a star because I feel some prices are higher than needed. I understand that some things here can't be found anywhere else but the prices should be a bit more reasonable. I'd have purchased more things (like those awesome gargoyles) if the prices were lower.

Beautiful items. Customer service is not something this company cares about (Rude, short, and dismissive).

I drove there from Chicago. Long drive. They have beautiful things but pretty expensive. I ended up buying nothing.

My mom has been talking about a bird bath for their new house, but there's never anything unique at the big chain stores around us.

Hands-down best place to purchase summer annuals in the Hinsdale / Willowbrook / Burr Ridge area…read more This family-owned establishment (now 3rd generation) is the real-deal. My family has purchased annuals from them for decades. Many of their plants (certainly not all, but many) are grown in-house by their master gardener who has been with them since the 1980s. The plants are always in top-notch condition which you will not find at most other places in this area. These people know about plants -- and more importantly will take the time to help you! They are often crazy-busy in May and June, so if you think you will need help best to get there very early as they are opening so they can help you (by mid-day in high season they are typically swamped). Excellent selection of bedding annuals and perennials, and a fantastic selection of veggie plants -- tomatoes, peppers, cukes, eggplants, melons, etc. Also a large selection of smaller flowering shrub-type plants like hydrangea, butterfly bush, etc. This is not a nursery (it is a greenhouse - six or seven of them actually!), so they do not have big trees or large evergreen type shrubs so if you are looking for those you'll have to shop somewhere else. But if you are looking for annuals, perennials, veggies, roses, or flowering shrubs, this is THE place to go!

I've visited this place four different times, and every single time I've been impressed by the…read morevariety of inventory. It's honestly a hidden gem. I love walking through the store and discovering all the unique items they carry, you can get lost in the sauce for sure. That said, the experience with the staff has consistently been disappointing. Across all four visits, the employees have ranged from cold to outright unfriendly and rude. We usually visit with our kids, and it often feels like our mere presence is an inconvenience. Asking for help or advice seems to irritate them even more, which makes the shopping experience unnecessarily uncomfortable. My wife and I have been debating going back now that spring is here because the inventory truly is fantastic, but we're honestly bracing ourselves for the same salty attitudes we've come to expect. Pricing is also a bit above market value, leaning toward overpriced, though that's becoming more common everywhere these days.

My Bride and I have been to Wannamaker's over 100 times since moving to Lisle in 2015... so I have…read morea bit of a track record with them. At every interaction, we've *never* had a bad or unpleasant experience there. I read with dismay the several posts here that recount other's experiences. Not having been there with those other Commentors, I certainly can't / won't comment on what they experienced. But I do note a common denominator, folks: many of these tales include, in some way, aspects of "Caveat Emptor". Wannamaker's is a large-ish store, and from shopping there a lot, I note that many Shoppers go there as almost a "field trip" - e.g. not often, and they probably are caught-up in the joy of a store that has literally *Everything* you might want, garden-related. Thus, I posit, they overbuy, and let their Spidey senses down. Perhaps by not counting the number of shoots in a flat, or expecting (and perhaps not documenting) their plantings against a possible future Health claim. As a Disinterested Observer, the store is consistently pretty busy, with complex sales, and have NEVER been staffed to support an Investigative Staff to assist their Customers. These are, really, basic Customer Skills you need to possess (or groom!), ESPECIALLY when living under the fat greasy thumb of His Puissant Orangeness and his Clown Show administration. Trust but Verify. Consider the flip-side here, though: Wannamaker's is a Specialty Store. Sure, they command higher pricing than Wal Mart, because everyone in there is a Professional in their field. They've seen it and done it and planted it. And, regarding Product, if you want it, they probably have it, or can order it for you. I cannot recall in the past decade ever being at Wannamaker's and leaving without what I came for. To me, that justifies the pricing delta. I convey my displeasure by withholding one Star. An Educated Consumer is their Target Customer. After the Sale, it's your Documentation that counts, and - quite possibly - your attitude when seeking whatever restitution your situation demands. Again, I'm not throwing-down at the several posters here who have had negative experiences. I wasn't with you, and I don't know. I'm sorry for your poor experience. But I've never had a bad experience at Wannamaker's, and I always try to support my local brick and mortar businesses!

I had a very disappointing experience at Wannamaker's and will not be returning. After spending…read moreover $400 on an olive tree, soil, and planter, I discovered an infestation that began shortly after purchase. When I went back to the store for help, they were completely unhelpful and unwilling to offer a refund or even store credit. Instead, they tried to sell me a $10 bottle of soap that they admitted may or may not work. Beyond that, there was no real guidance, advice, or effort to help resolve the issue. For a specialty nursery with premium pricing, I expected far more expertise and customer care. I strongly believe in supporting small businesses over big box stores, but this place was a complete disappointment. Between the high prices and lack of support, the value just isn't there. I will be finding a new nursery in the spring and highly recommend others look elsewhere as well. If you're looking for quality plants, knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices, and customer care, Wannamaker's is not it.
