My family surprised me with a nice dinner at the Overland for Mother's Day. The restaurant itself is fine- small place, small meat-centered menu, with decent service. We found ourselves waiting about twenty minutes for our server to bring a check. The food was solid, and we all enjoyed the mashed potatoes which were well salted and had a different flavor, maybe lemon? The pimiento wontons were a hit. My beef with this steak restaurant is that there was no host outside the 5th floor elevator at the host stand, so everyone had to meander in to find help to be seated. Also walking through the hotel lobby, the smell is strong- cigarette smoke and cheap cleaner. It bothered me a great deal, but I'm not reviewing the hotel. The guests appeared to be a mix of local cougars at the bar, reservations from within the area, and hotel guests who weren't all necessarily dressed for the occasion. Located on the fifth floor of the TownPlace suites in Germantown. The place looks nice inside. The service was good. The food not so much. Got the duck skewer and blackened shrimp tacos. The shrimp on the tacos still had the shell on. Did not enjoy that. Also the tacos had green stuff in it that I could not chew through. It did not look like lettuce to me. We had reservations for our anniversary. The hostess greeted us and wished us a happy anniversary. Service was top tier. I wasn't sure which cocktail I wanted, the waiter offered a sample. The ambiance was really nice. The waiter offered bread. They were basic grocery store rolls reheated ($6!) I ordered the salmon and husband had a steak. The food was real bland! I was expecting exquisite gourmet dinning and there was much left to be desired. For dessert I ordered the cheesecake. It was good. I would only consider returning for happy hour. From the out-of-the-elevator greeting through fruition of Tuesday ok dinner, we enjoyed everything about The Overland. We were pleasantly surprised that the patio was enclosed and offered plenty of space heaters and we were welcomed to sit out there. The other rooms included a large bar area, presumably full of hotel patrons, and a smaller dining room we were also offered. We weren't very hungry, so we settled for the salmon plate and ribeye steak: both were delicious, as was the complimentary bread with honey butter and pesto butter. Perhaps best of all was the service from John. Beginning to end, he was a pleasure, recommending wine, explaining the specials extensively, and ensuring we needed for nothing during our dining experience. I've deducted one star only because the menu is fairly limited (this wasn't a problem for us but definitely would be for a pickier palate) and a couple of things on the menu had changed or weren't available. Overall, though, the food and service more than make up for these small caveats (I would deduct .5 stars if possible), and we'll certainly be back! Protip: go into the hotel, around to the right for the elevators and up to the fifth floor to find this hidden gem! read more

Some things to be admired, some things to be wished for, some things with promise. Ambiance and design: this is a great space. It's cozy, a bit segmented, but a nice getaway. There are 3 distinct dining spaces: the bar area, a moderately sized dining room, and the patio. The dining room, complete with monocled bronze moose, is an intimate area, 6 or so tables. The bar is modern, fairly spacious, and well lit. A few tables here, bar seating there- it seems to be the more lively (not that one would expect it wouldn't be) option of the three. The patio is the gem: despite eating in the aftermath of a late post-costal hurricane, we managed to stay dry as the patio was covered, minimizing the spray of redistributed Gulf water. Decently lit, a spacious as the bar (save the perilous gas line exposed from the floor...fire pit later?), beautifully presented. Not hard to imagine this being destination dining with less soggy weather and background music provided by the GPAC amiptheater a hundred and a half yards away. Lots of fans for when summer bears its hot, soupy fruits. The decor is modern/Western; this is, after all, the owner's pursuit of Bug Sky country. Not too much, more of a touch to a call westward rather than over-the-top kitsch and museum of trophies. The service and staff: wonderful, but not without a touch of recently-opened jitters. Our waiters couldn't have been more accommodating and gracious, but with a touch of nerves (when your executive chef, in what I imagine some sort of power play, says sayonara a few days before opening, hard not to imagine that staff would be a bit, Memphis-speak here, "shook"). Nonetheless, we were very well taken care of. As an aside, I called ahead to see what the patio would be like given the sogginess. The hostess, exceptionally polite, when pressed for an answer, could only say that it was beautiful when the weather was nice. I get it, but a straightforward answer would have been appreciated. Again, they're figuring things out. So we're down to the food: keeping in mind the chef high-tailed it, the food was good. Ouch. The menu, scaled back, and I understand this (I kicked myself for forgetting to snap a shot of the menu): you've opened a new upscale restaurant in a wealthy suburb surrounded by Baby Boomer money under a concept that is, let's be honest, way outside the box for Memphis: do ONLY what you excel at. Offer nothing that isn't fine tuned. Ok, scene set. We had the charcuterie as an app. Prosciutto, lean soppressata, some (very good) mystery cheeses (a bleu, maybe an Abbott, something else), crostini, butter, a light Dijon, and fig spread with blueberries. Underwhelming- I think I buy the same meats from Costco in a multipack. I can't help but say it righted my expectations- artisanal-esque, but not artisanal. (Again, I get it: for the later dish, I understand there's not elk farms in outlying Memphis to select from.) We had the elk (again, I was fooled by the portion size of elk and lamb dishes) and the filet. Each were offered with green beans (exceptionally good), a sauce, and a starch. When ordered, the waitress asked if I was ok with two bone. This sounded substantial, and for the price, I envisioned such. Ordered rare, it was presented exactly that. The elk was, well, as it appeared in the photo. Expertly cooked, reliably seasoned, it was above good, below great. Not gamey to any degree, the sauce was elusive but they went back to dig again. The grits were good, either in the same bite with the elk or on their own. Again, the green beans were exceptional, buttery and perfectly cooked (tender with some vegetative spring). I had hoped for more Peruvian peppers through the dish- they provided a highlight to the bite when included (they seemed more of a garnish for color contrast, but wound up being integral to the best tasting bites). The filet was cooked as ordered (medium), very well seasoned (salt and pepper). The sauce was brightly colored, but vague tasting. To me, squash is a bass player waiting for a lead. Finally, we had shoestring fries (for the tallow) presented with aioli. Very good, my only criticism being the fries should have been fried a touch longer to be made slightly crispier. As good as they were, I'm not complaining. There was a lemon bar desert: not too sweet, delightfully sour, but the crust in the bottom required forceful manipulation (read: stabbing with a spoon) go enjoy. Value: Overall: above all, substance matters more than image. Yes, you eat with your eyes first. It's why smell enhances savor. It's why attractive people have the halo effect. And herein lies the issue The Overland currently faces: it's got the flash. It's got the beautiful space. It's got the gorgeous patio and great location (on that, parking is a breeze when you enter from the east sized parking lot to the hotel). But the food isn't upper echelon Memphis. We went a week or so after opening so we knew there would be a few kinks. Love the way the resturant is decorated...super cute! The staff were great including the solo bartender. Drinks were backed up because everyone in the restaurant ordered cocktails and there was only one bartender. I had the fish special "halibut" and it was great! This restaurant was an outstanding experience. Food was amazing, we really enjoyed the hamburger, steak and rainbow trout. All of your staff are very helpful, friendly, and great with suggestions. I wanted to recognize Marton for his attentiveness and being so nice and professional. We never had to wait and if anything came up the issue was fixed promptly. Could not ask for a better waiter. The restaurant was full and the decor was beautiful. We were sat at a 2 person table and this is really my only big complaint. The 2 person tables are tiny, like so small the menus don't fit. We joked during the dinner that the reason they take your order all at once is because the menus couldn't fit on the table with the food at the same time! The tables were also so close together I wasn't able to pull my chair out from under the table to sit without hitting the persons chair behind me. We ended up pushing the table further away but you couldn't sit without your feet being on the base of the table. Moral of the story, if you're going in a party of 2, request a larger table or sit at the bar. We ordered the pimento cheese wontons which were surprisingly really good as well as the carrot ginger soup. The soup was good but I would've liked to have some kind of bread in there, like croutons to give the soup a little more bite. But that's just personal preference. We ordered the elk for the entree and it was good, I do wish there were more meat on the elk pieces but otherwise it was really good. The green beans with the elk were some of the best I've ever had. The drink I ordered "over the moon" was very good, and huge. We got the lemon bar and the chocolate pot de creme for dessert and they were good. The lemon bar had a huge thick crust underneath it that was hard to break. The pot de creme was good and definitely sharable but I wish it had some kind of chocolate curls on top or berries or something to contrast the texture. After a few bites it starts to taste like a melted and chilled Hershey bar without that contrasting texture/flavor. Still very delicious though! Despite a few minor flaws, overall it was really good and we will be back. I think after a little bit of time to work out some of the minor issues, this place will be a true hidden gem in Germantown.
