We biked here from SF and it was the perfect carb to fuel our ride. They offered something for everyone from gluten free options and even vegan cream cheese! We've been to Boichik a number of times since moving to Marin (about 6 mos ago). They're always busy, and they are usually pretty good about getting our order ready quickly. One time our order was wrong, as they put salmon on the Vegan Hat Trick, and the manager Abraham comped our next visit for us. Great chew--like a real New York bagel. At $3.25, not as expensive as I expected. I had heard multiple times that their bagels are $5, which is why it took me so long to try the much-anticipated first Boichik outpost in Marin. I had a salt bagel, my favorite. I still think House of Bagel in San Rafael is the best in the area and I have a particular fondnes for the Montecito Bagel Street Cafe because the salt bagels are always still warm (if you can get one before they sell out!) but Boichik is a great addition to Marin. This location is set up for efficient takeout with a decent sized prep space and a small counter that moves quickly. Was actually very surprised to see some of the negative reviews, as my experience has been very positive. Boichik claims to be a true NY style bagel, and they are so accurate! I loved my sesame bagel that was lightly toasted with a perfect blended lox spread. The bagel has a deep, yeast flavor and is perfectly chewy with a nice crust on the exterior. Berkeley's favorite bagel shop, Boichik Bagels, opened up today in Larkspur. A long line here is no surprise, but it moved quickly, and included a warm welcome from the owner, Emily Winston, and a camera crew here to film the opening. Given a business defining blessing by Bon Appetit magazine in 2023, headquartered in New York City, who deemed them The Very Best Bagels in the US (outside New York, and they would know!) and an earlier feature (2021) in The NY Times, Boichik's opening day in Marin was anticipated by many local fans and the line here was proof of that. Many, many varieties of bagels here including egg, a bialy, and and four types of pumpernickel. I tried the whitefish sandwich on toasted poppy and added cucumber, tomato and red onion. A classic order and a solid rendition. Also enjoyed a toasted sesame bagel with their seasonal Fall cream cheese (apple, ginger maple.) A delicious addition to Marin that will be appreciated and is sandwiched (pun intended, sorry, not sorry) next to another local favorite woman-owned business, Equator Coffee. For now, bagels are baked at their home factory in Berkeley & delivered fresh each morning. Come and get ''em while they are hot! read more

As a resettled East-Coaster, the rep of the Berkeley shop brought me in to give them a try. My Nana would have made her evaluation as one Yiddish word, "Feh!". YELP readers deserve more detail, so: Bagels are just OK and for bagels at this level, they are over-priced. Cold and mildly stale just before noon, the absence of their own on-site ovens, leaves them lacking after a morning waiting for someone to buy them. They are not the 'air-bagels' that Noah's sells. They do have more substance than those- but the taste and texture experience would not bring me back. Chewy but pretty dry. The bagel, the truest measure of any bagel, is pretty flavorless. Both of these issues may be due to their lack of freshness by mid-morning. Truth is, I'm not one to pontificate on the assets of one bagel over another. Several years ago I stood in a line that snaked out a door in Manhattan, waiting for what was assumedly the best bagel ever and when I bit into it I shrugged and proclaimed, "it's a bagel". That's my way of saying when it's good it tastes like a bagel should and I find that nothing to rave over. When it's not so good the shoulder shrug is different, more of an "eh, it's a bagel". Boichik thankfully falls into the former category and my salt bagel (my favorite flavor) was lightly toasted and served up as a "daily special" ($6) which included cream cheese, tomatoes, and red onion. I added capers for an additional 50 cents. T'was good. The friend who joined me at Boichik had left his reading glasses behind, ordered what he thought was one thing, and wound up with a little more than expected price-wise. He carried his bagel to our outdoor table and plopped down saying something to the effect of "it had better be good for $16". I tend to think that no ingredients that sit between two halves of a bagel merit a price upwards of $16 but lox has a way of driving up prices. Order carefully and you can be equally satisfied with less of an attack on your wallet. I left Boichik well-satisfied with what I sampled from here, but still not amped enough to leave raving over a bagel. read more

Situated next door to a cool little coffee shop, Boichik Bagels hit the right note with me. I ordered a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese. It was an excellent bagel. It had that nice firm outside with tender inside crumb. Good and chewy like a bagel should be. The cream cheese was really nice. Very creamy and smooth. The famous Berkely establishment has come to the quant downtown Larkspur right next to Equator coffee. It is no secret that bagel places are far and in between in Marin so when a new offering presents itself it creates a buzz in the air. I now have explored this place twice and honestly I'm not blown away. Let's talk bagel first- they are very similar to Noah's.. a bit dense and dry and not that magical fluff that a bagel should have. I tried the garlic which had a beautiful seasoned exterior and the onion flavor was dried seasoning which I'm not a fan of. The shmear flavors are practically non existent.. I tried the hatch chili and the horseradish... didn't get any chili at all, literally was a light traditional cream cheese. The horseradish was a whisper and the dominant was definitely the traditional plain boring cream cheese... If you are going to offer flavors, go all in!!! All in all the hunt is still on for a great bagel shop. read more

So this is what's here now, Boichik. It follows a long line of losers (rip Urban Remedy, et al) trying to turn a profit in this "historic" re-purposed gas station location (see movie "Impact" 1949) where sky-high rent requires prices that can keep up with landlord lifestyle. I suppose it makes a lot of sense, being next door to Equator coffee, darling of certain Marin wives with dogs and kids, hordes of weekend bikers from the city, those who bus commute the other way into the city, and... unfortunately for me since I'm the one with money... my daughter, who insists we come here for her $10 large cappuccino when she's home from Brown grad school. How fitting, being this particular bagel purveyor at this location, as it's an easy match to Equator, overpriced and overdone for what it is. For the sake of whoever the "boichik" might be, one can only hope the bagels don't ultimately reveal themselves to be what they are: over the top, in price as well as far more, compared with the original model. The "original" was, according to Boichik founder, and perhaps still is in a way, H&H in Manhattan, itself founded in 1972 by a Puerto Rican who lived nearby. It turns out I also lived nearby then, about a block from this original location at 2239 W.80th St. So I know well what these "best in NY" were like, mainly even then overpriced compared with alternatives. (And in fact that location is the only reason the preeminent Jewish deli nearby that sported every kind known to man of dairy, salted fish, eggy knotted and seedy breads, chopped liver, briny olives, roasty coffee ("in the bean, please") plus preserved meats of every dimension suspended from hooks, the whole assembled slap-doodle bazarr style, such that you would sooner or later try everything in the place, Zabars by name, chose to sell these bagels "exclusively", not particularly because they were "the best" but simply that they were made right across the street, and all else being equal a fresh bagel is the best bagel.) My favorite bagels from the 70s, and still today if memory serves, were made on the main level of Penn Station, where several bagel bakeries cranked out this breakfast staple fast as possible and served them still warm/hot from oven to thousands of folks catching early morning Amtrak, Boston to DC. I headed to Philly, usually at best simply hung over from previous night, for the briefest possible workday, and much preferred mine untoasted as they were already warm enough being fresh off the line, with butter AND cream cheese (younger then). But boichik bagels aren't quite as fresh, won't melt butter as is, made across the bay probably less than a day before but still in even such a short time they aren't as "toothy" nor melt butter without a brief stop in the toaster: in short, unless you choose to have a concoction that will deliver a day's worth of calories in one meal, you'll likely want them lightly toasted or at least warm with butter. Bagels are like a lot of other simple peasant foods made from flour, essentially fried, baked or boiled carb-loaded dough-gobs. Italians have Gnocco Fritto, Germans Schmalzkuchen, who knows where southern bisquits and "dumplings" are from?, pancakes and beignets of course, matzah in all sorts of variations, and the recently revived faire-favorite, Penn Dutch "funnel cakes". Bagels are nothing more, nothing less, sans baking powder, eggs of course, and being blanched before baked become seriously dense, baked dough-gobs. The raw materials for fried/baked dough, regardless of how presented, are about as cheap as can be. So bakery products in general are hugely profitable (breakfast cereals? don't even mention). Speaking of funnel cakes, an old friend, Frank by name, in Pennsylvania made a very fine living selling these things at festivals, football games and other venues. (Never feel superior by the way to the guy at the festival selling hot dogs or cotton candy, seemingly menial work. He may very well take home twice your salary.) I once helped Frank run a food concession at a street fair in Philly. By day's end we had crammed two five-gallon plastic tubs with cash (almost left this behind after dinner at a diner in Jersey!) despite having to pay a kickback to the fair organizer plus a dozen or so cutie-pie teens handsome sums just to make these things. He sold his product then for about $2, today the price is at least twice that and bulk flour is still cheap. I asked Frank how he could charge such a price for something that was mostly air. "The thing is," he said from experience, having made quite a living selling other foods at one time or another before specializing in funnel cakes, "fresh baked on site just justifies higher prices. Don't know why, I guess has to do with that baking smell that fills the air all around the place." Hmmm, wonder how long before Boichik finds room in back of this store for a small oven? read more

Bagel was fresh and wonderful. The cream cheese was great and had a perfect ratio of cheese:bagel. I ordered and everything bagel with lox cream cheese. The lox in there was generous and high quality. You don't find a bagel like this in the Bay Area every day. They definitely knocked it out of the park. The service was great! The workers were very polite and joyful. The order was complete efficiently and quickly. The shop was small and made for takeout orders, however, they do have nice seating outside. The shop was very clean, and the seating was wonderful, and surrounded by beautiful redwood trees. read more

Hands down the best bagels in the Bay Area and possibly the country (I've lived in NYC and I'm not exaggerating)! It's a hole in the wall next to Equator in Larkspur so it's convenient to get a drink with your bagel (they don't sell much besides bagels at Boichik). I've only been here once. I was picking up two plain for an out of town guest and decided to to pick up some breakfast for myself. I got there around 7:30 and I was the only one in the there. I was not greated at first and when I was I received no smile, no welcome to Boichiks. The man at the counter seem preoccupied. He wasn't rude, just kind of absent. Whatever, maybe it was an off day. I got the whitefish on an onion bagel. The bagel was good. Soft and chewy and the onion wasn't bitter like I've had other places. The whitefish was way to salty. I only ate have of the bagel and it took me awhile to get it down. I ate it because I was hungry and I couldn't leave work. Love Boichik Bagels! I couldn't be happier that Boichik opened a new location in Larkspur. I had been a fan of their bagels for a while but always had to buy them in SF or the Eastbay. There are a few local grocery stores that carry their bagels but they come and go and are usual sold frozen. If you love bagels, you know there's nothing quite like a fresh, well-made bagel and Boichik offers just that. I popped into the Larkspur location this past weekend (12/23) and grabbed a fresh stack of everything bagels. They did not disappoint and filled my car with a crazy delicious aroma. I honestly thought about pulling over several times driving home to take a bite. The store is also filled with wonderful baking aromas and complex spice scents from the different bagels. I was only there to pick up the bagels but plan to go back soon. I'm so glad that all of their bagels are vegan (with the exception of the Egg bagel) and that they have a vegan cream cheese topping as an option. I would absolutely love it even more if they had other vegan options but maybe over time they'll add more. The service was pretty quick despite it being so busy. They were really nice and friendly which just added to the overall new happiness for this place. I'm a fan of their original location on College Avenue in Berkeley - so I was looking forward to trying the Larskpur location. Unfortunately, unlike every bagel store I have ever been to in my life (and I've been to quite a few), the bagels at this location are not baked at the location. I understand they are baked in the East Bay in the wee hours of the morning, then trucked over to Larkspur. We got there at about 11:45 AM, at which point unbeknownst to us the bagels were already somewhat long in the tooth. They did not taste like freshly baked bagels that you would expect to get at a bagel specialty store. read more

I live close by and find their bagels to be just fine. Fresh, tasty, a consistancy that works for me and a selection that satisfies my wants. If I don't get there early enough, sometimes they're out of my first choice, but I can't seem to develop a chip on my shoulder and get annoyed because I can always show up the next day for the desired flavor. The staff is friendly and attentive. It's always a pleasure to do business there. The other quality bagel places charge about the same per piece, so I'm not feeling ripped off. It's not 1986 any more and bagel bakeries can't stay in business if they're only charging 50 cents. Heck, even a simple donut at a real donut ship is a dollar and a half, at least.
