Was Super Bowl Sunday, figured my diet was shot for the day so I picked up some donuts to bring to a friend's house to share. This allowed me to get some different kinds I hadn't had or seen before. Today was my first visit to Johnny Doughnuts, and it did not disappoint. I read that they offer one flavor of vegan doughnut, but when I walked up to the window, I saw there were THREE vegan choices!! I ordered two of the three (maple espresso, and glazed). This is a very cute establishment in a very lovely village. I'll have to caveat that the donuts are made with sourdough, I believe and it offered a different flavor than I expected. I am a very simple glaze or sugared donut gal, so this didn't quite hit to my liking, but that doesn't mean you will feel the same. I recommend trying it to see. Today I happened to be in the area and decided to pick up a few of the vegan donuts to take home. Made with sweet potato, the vegan donuts available were chocolate, maple and glazed. I was in the area exploring the farmers market for the first time and came upon this adorable shop. I was sure there would be no vegan options but there were two!! Not only were there some vegan options, they really made it count with having two delectable flavors: coffee zebra (coffee glaze with chocolate drizzle) and chocolate. Usually vegan donuts are cake style but these were yeast donuts, which is a huge bonus (to me anyway!). The donut was plump and fluffy, looking just like their conventional counterparts. The texture of the donut was super fluffy and light, and the coffee glaze was actual coffee! It wasn't that fake coffee essence you get with coffee-flavored pastries. This coffee glaze was robust and full of coffee flavor. You might as well only have the donut without coffee because that glaze made up for the lack of coffee. If their one of two vegan donuts were so amazing, I'm certain the rest of their selection would be top notch! The service was friendly and fast, and the counter where you picked the order was super cute! Just check out the photo! On a weekend adventure to the North Bay, I stopped by the farmers market and stumbled upon Johnny Doughnuts while there. Just through pure brand recognition, I decided to try it out and see what all the hype was about. There was quite a line when I got there, but it moved pretty quickly. Plus it gave me enough time to browse the menu and check out the display to figure out what I wanted. I like that they offer the classics like chocolate and glaze along with some unique flavors. Since I don't often see it at donut shops around me, I went for the brown butter glaze donut. It was good, very sweet though. Definitely a treat for a cheat day. They also offer coffee and teas but we didn't get those. This is a takeout only space with a covered outdoor patio / picnic table area right up front. I wish they made the prices more easy to find though. It's not on their big menu - just the types of donuts. What started with one location near downtown San Rafael has now evolved into four total locations, including one in the Pacific Heights neighborhood in San Francisco, but the one that I have been to twice now is this fast-casual quasi outdoor location in the trendy Marin Country Mart in Larkspur in Marin County, California. Johnny Doughnuts represents the doughnut apex that the Bay Area is currently living under and what sets them apart is the quality of their namesake products as the two times that I have been I found them light yet full of sweetness and flavor. That's because Johnny Doughnuts has no fewer than eight different kinds of doughnuts that they offer including doughnuts as varied as Raised, Old Fashioned, Bismarks, Frittah Thang, which are wheat free, Roasted Sweet Potato, which are vegan, Cinnamon Rolls, Crodough, and Apple Fritters, there is something here for everyone, as long as supplies last. The first time I came here I ordered one doughnut as they were ready to go close in the late afternoon, and their Strawberry Doughnut, which can be found under the Raised Doughnut category I found a sufficient take on the light and fluffy doughnut, but upon first taste it just didn't grab me. A recent visit for the second time, had me reconsider everything that I knew about doughnuts, as the three I enjoyed this time were some of the best doughnuts that I have enjoyed in quite some time, as it seems as it all depends on what doughnut you select, as when I went they had a lot more options to choose from. A quick and easy ordering system that customers pop their heads through a window that features all of their doughnuts in a glass case and ready to and pickup from their team makes any visit convenient. This time I ordered two of their Crodough Doughnuts, one that was Wildberry flavor and the other that Chocolate Chip, and for good measure I ordered a Bismark Doughnut that was filled with Chocolate Vanilla Cream. Each doughnut at Johnny Doughnut cost $5.60 and since you are not eating them there as they have no indoor dining, only an outdoor patio to serve their ravished customers, no tax is added to your bill. I would take my doughnuts home, and although my paper bag would be a little greasy, my appetite would be totally satisfied thanks to the abundance of flavor with every bite. Every doughnut was crisp and flaky to the touch, the doughnuts at Johnny Doughnuts are so dense yet light that eating them with a fork and knife wouldn't be too out of the ordinary. Both crodough doughnuts were exactly what one would think they would be as a cross between a doughnut and croissant with just the right amount of sprinkled sugar to hug the bottom of each doughnut with sweet icing smothering the top of each doughnut. The surprise with this visit was their Bismark doughnut as the custard oozed out as expected not to be outdone by all of the chocolate icing and sprinkles for good measure. So many doughnuts so little time, and at Johnny Doughnuts you're just getting started with just one visit as you will keep coming back again and again thanks to using quality ingredients sourced from local North Bay purveyors. Here's to the continued success of Johnny Doughnuts which will no doubt lead to more locations, which hopefully will be closer to home, which is too dangerous to fathom for me! This place is a staple, and you definitely get your money's worth! Parking is usually easy, and the line depends on the time/day but it always moves quickly. A family fav is the vanilla sprinkly guy...you can't go wrong with this! And the apple fritters are delicious as well. Hands down the best donuts I have had. I have eaten here twice and both times didn't disappoint. The donuts are huge and the taste is great. The problem in the past, I have noticed with donuts this size from other places is they are more like cake texture and taste than donut. This is not the case with Johnny Donuts. The doughnuts looked all so pretty sitting behind the glass counter. The motto is "wholesome, hand crafted with love". They definitely looked so. The raised doughnuts are yeast based dough with potato. The classic old fashion and the cake old fashions were both made of a sour cream based dough. The classic old fashion is infused with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. I read this info off the menu board. I wanted to try a cake old fashion, but I was slow on the roll. They sold out of those. So I bought a classic old fashion chocolate salted caramel and a classic raised strawberry glaze. But as I was providing my order to the staff, I noticed there was no prices listed. Hmm, I wondered to myself where the heck is the pricing? The prices are not marked near or on the trays with the doughnuts. I asked and the doughnuts were $5 plus each. At those prices, I really hoped they were going to be delicious. After the staff bagged my doughnuts, I went to another window to pay. That's where they have a menu price board. My wife and I stopped by Johnny Doughnuts around noon on a Sunday to pick up a quick snack before lunch. When we got to the ordering kiosk, there was only a single other person in front of us. We shared the Lime Mascarpone Bismark and Maple Old Fashion doughnuts. Both doughnuts were very fresh and the flavors were exactly as described. If you enjoy maple bars, the Maple Old Fashion doughnut is a step-up from it in every single way. The lime mascarpone filling in the other doughnut was fluffy and not too heavy, and there was plenty of it spilling out of the doughnut with each bite. I believe the Maple Old Fashion doughnut is a seasonal flavor, but you can actually get a latte in the same flavor as this doughnut! It might be sweetness overload if you have both at once, but the option is there if you have a huge sweet tooth. Priced at $5.60 and $4.75, the donuts here are on par with what you would pay for a well-made, "high-end" pastry at a bakery like b. patisserie in San Francisco or Backhaus in San Mateo.
