This was my first visit to The Block (VA) which is a foodhall and bar. Bold Dumplings is located inside and straight towards the back of the foodhall. I will preface this review by mentioning that I did visit on Saturday of the Labor Day weekend. With that being said, I had to wait a half hour to get my food. The one thing, that did help slightly with the lengthy wait, is they give you a pager which allows you to see what the rest of the foodhall has to offer or even wait outside if the weather is nice. I ordered the Combination Dumpling Platter which comes with 3 beef, 3 chicken, and 3 deep-fried kimchi dumplings. The beef dumplings were great, by far the best part of this platter. The chicken dumplings were pretty standard, nothing amazing. My husband really liked the kimchi dumplings. I had high hopes for them but they didn't quite hit it for me. They ended up being too greasy with not enough kimchi flavor in my opinion. Overall, I wasn't super impressed. But I have to say I do actually want to go back and give it one more try. I'd like to come back on a less busy day and see if the wait time is improved at all. And I'd really like to try their soup dumplings and get them "dine-in" in steamer baskets. Stopped in on a busy Saturday afternoon so the lines at all the places were pretty long, but my husband is never one to want to pass up dumplings. We order a set of pork & shrimp soup dumplings, fried beef dumplings, shumai and the mini bao. I was unaware they were Mongolian owned til I read Melody's review though I had no complaints about the taste all. The stars were the bao and the soup dumplings. Probably could have downed two orders of both and left super satisfied. My husband wasn't a fan of the shumai and said they had an odd texture (he described them as gritty). I didn't feel the same - but thought it worth mentioning. I will agree with Iulia's comments about the staff's lack of communication. The woman at the register walked away between each order - it didn't seem like she was conveying anything to the chefs, just stepped back five or six steps and then back to the register. I don't know what was up with that but it seemed odd. She also didn't say anything while at the register taking orders (I even started with my usual "Hello, how are you?" before I start ordering). It was awkward in terms of service. I also noticed the lack of gloves while the employees were cooking and touching everything. You order at the counter and they give you a pager. They have a variety of options to choose from. I ordered pork soup dumplings (I believe the cost was about 10 dollars before tax). I believe the dumplings are made to order because I saw one of the staff start making them when they received the ticket. Their soup dumplings took longer to come out than other places I'm used to, about 15-20 minutes. The soup dumplings came out piping hot. I waited a few minutes before trying one. The pork itself was tasty; unfortunately there was little to no soup in the dumplings. I was missing the slurping that comes with soup dumplings. My favorite was the kimchi one. They also served this with hoisin sauce which I thought was interesting, I would have preferred it if they had a different dipping sauce instead. Did what we have taste good?...I mean sure, but not returning due to customer service issues. - Their most famous item is the "pork soup dumplings" which to any normal Xiao Long Bao eater, is described as a deliciously created pork ball mixed with a frozen cube of gelatin broth wrapped in a rice wonton wrapper essentially snd steamed to perfection where the broth gelatin cube melts and creates a SOUP for which the pork sits in. When you crack open the dumpling, the soup flows out of it. - Bold Dumpling sells this item however they do not put any gelatin cube in it and so...80% of our dumplings had no broth in them whatsoever....no "soup" to their "soup dumplings"....well when my fiancée brought this up to them and asked for a new batch or a refund, they informed us they don't make true soup dumplings and that "it is their way of doing things" and they cannot refund us. The customer is not right at this eatery. Thank you for letting me rant and while the dumplings that we did have were an okay 2.5/5, their lack of proper advertisement and abhorrent customer service drops them down further. I really wish I had read reviews before selecting this for my lunch from the Block. I thought $10 for dumplings meant they would be a huge portion and totally amazing, so I ignored my instincts that were saying "poké" and went for the chicken dumplings. It's hard to find places that specialize in soup dumplings so I was very excited to try these. I ordered the 8 Pork and Shrimp dumplings. It was lunchtime so decently busy which meant we waited 35 minutes. My only complaint is that there was only some soup in 2/8 dumplings. For the prices of these dumplings, at bare minimum I expected at least half would have soup in them. This restaurant is located with a hub of other restaurants (The Block) with a common eating area in the middle and a bar on the side. Overall the place is a good trendy vibe. I've been to bold dumplings quite a few times. Just like others who have reviewed, I purchased the dumpling soup. I have had this from their restaurant about four times and each time they are consistently delicious. They make the dumplings fresh so your wait will quite long. You'll be waiting at least 25 minutes.....and since it's Covid you can't sit and wait in the eating area. Also, the buzzer doesn't work outside so you just end up stand there looking silly bc there is no true waiting area. So make sure you bring your phone so you can pretend to look busy lol. Anyway, each time I have gone I have tried something different. One time I tried Beef Bao buns and reeeeally didn't like it. There is a certain flavor that I'm not familiar with that really turned me off. Two bites and it was in the trash for me. Another time I got the Teriyaki Chicken Hibachi with an eggroll. Every single item had almost almost no flavor (and I am very COVID free so I was not experiencing the "no taste" symptom). Also the chicken was all white meat. I prefer dark meat so the chicken won't be so dry. I purchased another item in the past but I honestly can't remember. But I do recall not loving it. I've concluded that this place's specialty really are just the dumplings, though I haven't tried the whole menu. I've just been too consistently disappointed to try anything else... especially since they're not cheap. I find it best to order dumplings online and go and pick them up. Not me personally, but my friend came on a saturday afternoon and ordered the Spicy Pork Wonton. He was given a buzzer and everything was fine, our other friends ordered from here as well and got their food in a timely manner. We waited a good 15 minutes for his food, his buzzer still didn't go off. He went up to ask where his food was and the cashier replied "2 minutes". 5 more minutes pass by and he just asks for a refund. There should be no reason he had to wait ~20 minutes; there was no other customers coming in. There was no reason that was given on why the food was late, the cashier just said it was her fault. A proper explanation or at least communication between her and the paying guest would've been satisfactory. On top of that, I feel like it's a bad look that they use a microwave in an open kitchen. Not really regarding health code violation, just looks bad. Another thing I noticed is that even though they have an open kitchen, they made all their wontons/dumplings without gloves which was kind of concerning. There's no guarentee of the cleanliness with the staff here in general. The cashier goes back and forward from touching the tablet, buzzers, cash transactions, then touching the food without washing her hands. As someone who was at The Block for the first time, it was really difficult to choose what to order. What caught my eye was the spicy wontons that I have heard all over Tiktok. Although it is not the exact restaurant, I wanted to give it a try. I love spicy and knew this would be good. Keep in mind, I am extremely good at handling spice but this was way too spicy. I looked at the reviews for the spicy wontons and there was not a single mention of it being too spicy. I immediately knew that there was just an excessive amount of spice in mine. My boyfriend, who isn't much of a spice lover but can handle a decent amount, couldn't even try it because he tasted a bit of the sauce and his mouth was on fire. We ended up having to throw half of it away. It was good, but who could've eaten this. For reference, at Hangry Joe's, I get my spice level Hot and it's not enough for me to keep chugging my water bottle. I can eat Buldak fire noodles and it's not that bad. This one got me though. Don't know if that is normal!! The Teriyaki Chicken Hibachi with noodles was my boyfriend's order but it was pretty good from the few bites I had. The spring roll that came with it was not good at all. Had to throw it out with the wontons. Arguably the WORST dumplings I've ever eaten... Came here one time before and tried the soup dumplings, they were edible but a solid 2/5. This time I ordered the combination, $16. They were unlike any dumpling I've had before, more like an empanada... Deep fried and somehow even soggy. One set of the dumplings looked as expected. Now, I'm an adventurous eater, but the texture was so unpleasant and the dumplings so heavy with grease, of the 9 dumplings my wife and I split one of each type and threw the rest away. There are much better places to spend your money at The Block than this place. It's just disappointing because it would be so nice to have a good dumpling place in the food court. When we went up to the counter, the cashier couldn't answer any of our questions about the food because she was "new". She ended up pulling over another employee who had a better idea of what was going on and was able to help us. I ordered a basket of of the vegetarian dumplings and my friend the shrimp. The vegetarian dumplings, like most of the meatless options at The Block, were not great. They had zero flavor, which their only savior was the dipping sauce. The dough could have been rolled thinner and was not impressive for handmade-to-order dumplings. My friend said the shrimp ones were better, but I didn't try them. The other disappointment was on the menu it says you recieve eight dumplings per order, which is already pricey for $10. However, we only received six each. When we told the cashier, she shrugged and mentioned the sign may be wrong. It's sad that that fourth stall at The Block cannot sustain a good, long-term vendor. I ordered the spicy pork wontons and beef bao and boy did bold dumpling deliver! The wontons were beautifully pliable, and were quite spicy!! The herb garnish added to the freshness on the palate. I would make a pilgrimage back for just these dumplings. The bao dough was also excellent, and the beef filling flavorful. My wife, son, and I decided to have lunch at The Block, which gave me a chance to order from Bold Dumplings. While my wife went to get a poke bowl, I order the spicy ramen for myself and the teriyaki chicken for my son. I know, I know! Why order something that's NOT a dumpling from a place called Bold Dumplings! Guess I thought I'd be...BOLD! (the spicy ramen was being promoted on a full screen! and it advertised three different dumplings as added toppings! so it was screaming at me --- I'm delicious! pick me!!!) Never mind the thirty-minute wait (everyone looked busy and hard at work). But NO WAY do you charge $13.99 for a ramen dish where you open up a pack of Shin Ramen and throw dumplings on top plus an egg to give it some glam. I could have walked down to the K Market down the strip and gotten a pack of 5 Shin Ramens for $4.99. And no, it's not that the dish tasted JUST LIKE Shin Ramen. I actually saw a box of Shin Ramen brought in from storage for one of the cooks to bust open and start the dish. There are places that do this, but they price it accordingly. That specific dish has GOT TO GO! Basically, this is a restaurant version of paying $14.99 for the smallest popcorn and drink at a movie theater. AND...just so you dumpling fans know...not long after, they opened a commercial package of dumplings (read: store bought), brand name and all, to prepare for the steamer. I don't know if they do this with all their dumplings. But if they use frozen pre-packaged for one, I would question just what on their menu is actually prepared and put-together in-house.
