Their duck is the specialty and definitely the standout -- make sure to order something from the duck menu. For some reason, there is a wine bottle at every table as decor? The service was quick, and staff are very friendly! The Peking duck hits the spot here. I cannot believe I have lived in Annandale and driven past Duck Chang's so many times but had never been, until today. Well thankful hubby and I rectified that today. I think part of why I hadn't been was I have my take out Chinese food location in Annandale & this spot gets put on the parallel with Piking Gourmet. I can see who one might draw that parallel from a menu & specialty standpoint and similar time frame but they have very different feels inside. First Duck Chang's is smaller inside and feels much more personal. We were spoken to by several staff including the lead chef. We both got something new to us and both had positive food experiences. I had the Sha Cha Delight; hubby got the Stir Fried Ho Fun with beef. Because we both enjoyed our meals and were on our way to check on a friend we ordered her a take out meal, she reported a positive experience. We all agreed we would be back. While I'm not sure how I made it so long without a visit one of our New Year's resolutions will be to visit again and repeatedly. Placed a to go order for Christmas Day. This is probably one of their busiest days of the year, but food was ready on time. I also called a few different restaurants in the area before choosing Duck Changs and they were polite and friendly on the phone. Hunan shrimp price $21.5 . Serving came out rice as small as baby fist. The food is in a paper box about medium or large size of mashed potato in Popyes. The owner just gave me a total for $24.24 without any taxes breaking down. Very expensive, I can get the same for $16 somewhere else. The shrimp feels old and sour. How come they can get 4.1 out of 5 in reviews. Possible they buy the review. Also, I saw in the menu the Peking duck whole for $70. Excellent place for gluten free Chinese. Two of my friends are GF and are always looking for Asian food - this place is great and can make many things on the menu GF. We had the shrimp and chicken fried rice, the beef stir-fry ho fun (wide rice noodles), and sweet and sour chicken. I don't know how they breaded the chicken for the sweet and sour chicken, but it was great! Very crispy and crunchy. The fried rice was tasty and I really liked the ho fun noodles. No doubt the Peking duck was on point and delicious so if you are planning to go for the duck then it's all good. However, all the other dishes were sub par, like they missed on seasoning the food. Me and my husband really meal over here, we're eat whole duck with 2 styles, snow pea tips stir fried and stringbeen stir fried with szechuan style ( little spicy ). They're all delicious. Service is perfect, decorate soft and warm like American style. We'll come back. read more

Family run business here, I always drive by this place since I was a kid but it was first time entering it in 20+ years of living in the area. Went for my brother's birthday and family Lunar New Year celebration and enjoyed the experience. Small space but doesn't feel cramp or overcrowded, the service is nice and the workers are extremely friendly and helpful, also funny. Food was great, ordered Peking duck, lo mein, chicken, beef and broccoli, just multiple options for the family. Honestly can't go wrong, think the soup might just be bland, but I prefer savory items. We ordered a half Peking duck. the skin was not golden but quite brown and a bit burned, The meat was not moist but dry, We were very hungry so we ate it but it was not Peking duck at its best. Located in Annandale on John Marr drive, this restaurant has been here for a long time. Even though I lived in Annandale for a long time, I tried Duck Chang for the first time this weekend. I agree with a review I read about how this place isn't somewhere you go to impress your date bc the interior is outdated. It's not somewhere you'll take your future in laws but it's a nice place you can take your close friends and family. What matters is that the food here was pretty good. The duck here is well cooked, the skin is crispy and the meat is not dry. The string beans are amazing. There is a nice wok hei flavor. The tea was served in individual brewing glasses. My parents really liked it here. I'll be back to try more of their menu. read more

The hard working family staff is engaging and you're almost certain to meet the owner, who is always makes good conversation. I've had their Chinese food, which comes in generous portions and is worthwhile (particularly the fried rice). But no trip should be had without the peking duck. Simply put, I've searched far and wide for duck as good as this and rarely find it. The pancakes are thin, but sturdy. The plum sauce is excellent and adds even more depth to the experience. The duck is never too fatty and the crispy skin is bursting with flavor. It simply is heaven in your mouth. I also highly recommend the sweet and sour soup. It includes strips of duck, and is a great secret way to get more of their excellent food in your belly. They've been great even with take out. I can't recommend this gem enough. read more

Food - 2.5/5 Service - 5/5 Ambiance - 2/5 I've driven by this place for decades and never gave it a try (no real curb appeal). My parents said the last time they ate here was over 30 years ago. While trying to search for a Chinese restaurant close by/last minute (since we now have a small baby) we landed on coming here on Thursday night around 6:30pm based on other Yelp reviews. We were the only ones in the restaurant, which is never a good sign; second sign it might not be what we expected is the menu had no Chinese on it (like for the dish names) just English. Who looked to be the the restaurant owners (a couple), gave us great service from the time we walked in till we left. We ordered half of their "famous" Peking duck, beef and string beans, shrimp fried rice, and the DC Pork. We tried to order Chinese broccoli but they were out of it (funny story, my dad said it wasn't a good sign 30 years ago when he asked for it and they didn't have it at all, only regular broccoli with the head and now, again they don't have it). The best dish was the DC Pork (we love salt+pepper fried pork as a go-to dish at other Chinese restaurants), and this one was strips instead of cut of pork chop. Still good; only downside is the dish is served with pretty much raw white onions on the plate, so not super edible/appetizing. Duck was just okay but a tad dry and the skin was barely crispy/no crunch. Beef and string beans were overly oily and like regular take out quality. The shrimp fried rice was also what you'd expect when you order take out and needed salt/seasoning. The bill total with tax was about $109 (not including tip) for 4 dishes. The dishes were pricier and not as good quality as other Chinese restaurants in the area, and I don't think the half Peking duck was worth it. The decor is kind of standard but plates seemed old and many plastic. The staff (or owners) were sitting really close by on their laptop so it felt weird they so close while we were eating and the only customers there. It was also pretty dark inside so just an odd vibe. Overall a just okay meal, nothing stands out, and most likely won't return. It's not what we wanted or hoped for a more authentic Chinese restaurant and was more of a high priced American Chinese takeout place, imo. read more

We've been coming to Duck Chang's for over 12 years, about once a year for a special meal. The restaurant is run by a family which is welcoming and attentive; it's like stepping into their own dining room. You can get fancier food elsewhere, but if you're looking for comfortable, homemade, traditional, fairly-priced Chinese food (Shanghainese?), this is your spot. Think of your favorite couch growing up...the one that was a little worn, but felt so comfortable when you plopped down. Got the image? That's Duck Chang's. The building is very unassuming, but the constant low rumble in the kitchen assures that you can always count on delicious food being served up. We usually get a 1/2 Peking duck with the fixings and a few other dishes. The DC Chicken is also always yummy - even our 8-year-old can tolerate the heat for that irresistibly salty crunch. My experience with Chinese food growing up in the 80s was largely based on dining in Maryland and occasional foreys to NOVA with my parents. Then I moved to the Seattle area in the early 2000s and discovered Sichuanese Chinese food. I learned how cuisine in China is so regionally diverse with distinctive flavors and cooking techniques. One of my favorite dishes is very difficult to prepare and requires disciplined dedication to the art. Peking duck! I'm grateful to have finally dined at Duck Chang's. Next year is their 50th anniversary and the 2nd generation owner, Peter Chang, continued the legacy started by his father. The family restaurant has been at this location since the beginning and that is amazing! The restaurant is well kept and clean. The decor gives a sense of stepping into a family restaurant with a portrait of Peter's father hanging on the wall in honor of this legacy. Peter is charming and attentive to his patrons. We felt welcomed and well taken care while dining there. I've been making smoked duck every Thanksgiving for the past 3 years. So I love eating duck! At Duck Chang's, the menu has a wide variety of duck dishes. If I lived in NOVA, I would be trying every one of these dishes. This time, I had to have the Peking duck and duck soup. The soup arrived first and it was so flavorful. Better than the duck soup I've had at HK BBQ Master near Vancouver, British Columbia! People in the Pacific NW regularly say the duck soup there is the best, but Duck Chang's surpasses it. Once the Peking duck was served, we saw how expertly cut it was and the presentation was inducing some serious mouth watering. I opened the lid holding the wraps and was amazed to learn these were all handmade wraps. Even the sauce was made painstakingly from scratch. The duck itself was so well done, balancing flavor, crisp skin, and tender meat. It is easily among the best Peking duck I've ever had! There is no pretentiousness here at Duck Chang's. Peter is down-to-earth and understands well that this tradition passed down to him may become a lost art in the future. Hard working immigrants started this restaurant and their son has honored the legacy of this cuisine along with his staff. I highly encourage people who are reading this review and haven't had eaten at Duck Chang before to give it a try. Duck is so popular in other parts of the world, but isn't widely eaten in the U.S. because of how much space is needed compared to chicken. But duck is a superior poultry with a deep rich flavor with more dark meat. This rating is strictly on their Peking duck to-go order. Not what I expected for a $50 ducks. Meat and skin were dumped into the Chinese carry out cartons. They didn't even put an effort into arranging it onto a foil tray. Meat were sliced very thick which was hard to roll. I was hugely disappointed and upset at myself for giving them a chance. I love this place! This is definitely a family run business. The owner is always the guy who cuts up our duck. He is very friendly and so are his family members that work here too (wife and mom??). We get the whole duck for fam fam time. I love this place 500% more than Peking Gourmet Inn. PGI is just sooo stingy with their peking duck experience.
