Located in the heart of Alberta, this is a cosy Ethiopian place with great food and service. We've been here multiple times and 9/10 times food has been fantastic. I would rate food here on par if not slightly better than Bete Lukas, the other celebrated Ethiopian place around town. The spicy chicken with boiled egg is to die for and so is the Injera bread. As with other Ethiopian places the prices are cheap. Overall, highly recommended any day of the week! read more

The restaurant is small and comfortable. The food was excellent, although I'm not an expert. We ordered two veggie combinations and two meat dishes for 4 served family style and it was a LOT of food. Since one of us was a vegetarian, having everything on one flatbread was a little challenging for him. They kept the flatbread coming and left a bottle of water on the table. They turned us away because we had a service dog. We supplied the server with all legally required information for the dog but he did not adhere to the law. We could have called the police, but we decided to take our business elsewhere. If you are in the service or retail industry, know the ADA laws surrounding service dogs. The anticipation of trying this restaurant paid off great. We tried the combo to get a taste of many of the dishes and the spices on the beef dish were so flavorful. You really appreciate the time and effort that goes into the dishes here. I've never had anything like the bread before it was crepe like and easy to eat the meal with. We just went there last night again for the second time. We ordered 1 chicken dish (they were out of lamb again) and some combo veggie dishes. When the chicken came out we couldnt even tell there was any chicken in there. We've found 1 little chicken leg that was about the size of a roll of quarters (no exaggeration) in a bowl of sauce. initially we thought we will just deal with it maybe they are having a rough night, but when we tried to eat the drumstick we found it to be as hard as bricks. feeling a little ripped off seeing that the small chicken leg that we couldnt even eat costs about $14 we decided to send it back. Instead of apologizing and bringing us a new order, the owner decided to bring out a plate with a fork and knife. he took the drum stick out and proceeded cutting and saying, "this is how you eat." The first piece he was cutting was so hard that it flew out of the plate and and landed on my lap. Probably ruined my pants with the stains of sauce that we werent able to get out. The only reason Im giving it a 2 star is because the wife brought us a beef replacement dish (which also wasnt very good), apologized, and only charged us for the veggie combo without us having to ask for it. I thought about not writing an update because she was nice, but I didnt want to fool yelpers into going there because of our previous review. The veggie dishes were still really good, but the whole experience of it would prevent us from going back for a long while. If you want to give it a shot and try your luck you could either have some really good food with good service, or you could end up like us. read more

This is a solid Ethiopian restaurant. I've eaten at probably 15 Ethiopian restaurants all around the U.S. (New York, LA, DC, Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago), and this one solidly settles in the top 6 or 7. The vegetarian combination plate has a nice selection of all of the typical options served at Ethiopian restaurants (lentils, cabbage, cooked greens, beets) - all are tasty. The only issue with this place is they could add a bit more spice to everything; it seems they are holding back a little. My husband, who ate the key wat, also felt his dish was good but could be spiced up a bit. For people interested in service, this the fastest I have ever been served at an Ethiopian restaurant (though we were there ate 5pm on a Thursday). People were very nice and friendly, especially the female waitress. read more

Sweet and homely place with lovely food. They had a good combination of spicy and mild traditional Ethiopian curries in the vegetarian platter. The menu is pretty basic and simple. We all liked the beans and carrot preparation the best, different from the other Ethiopian restaurants we've dined in. We were a big group of 11 people and the service was quick and friendly. I've eaten at several Ethiopian places around town and my favorite dish is Doro Wat. The first time I came here I looked over the menu and decided to get the vegetarian combo. I wanted to try the Doro Wat but it seemed expensive at $14. I was pleased with the veggie combo but the different items seemed a little bland in flavor/seasoning to me. So, next time I went, even though it was expensive I had to try the Doro Wat. This dish is a home run here. Best I've had in Portland. They also serve it with some of their homemade smoked buttermilk cheese which really brings the whole dish in focus. I will be going back for the Doro Wat for sure. I just have to save up a little more before I go back.....if they lowered the price of this dish, I'd be there a lot more often! read more

This place is delicious. We just moved in a short walk away, and were thrilled to learn an Ethiopian place was within walking distance (for us it means crossing one street!) We ordered the veggie combo (delicious!) and the Misto combo (also delicious!) and would happily order both again, though going forward we might stick with the veggie combo and work our way through the meat options. We also thought the Tej honey wine was some of the best we've had, and the service was fantastic and friendly. My wife and I have been enjoying foods of the world and especially Ethiopian for nearly 30 years. We are both accomplished home cooks, and I have had the pleasure of being a chef at a high end appliance and fixtures company in the Pearl. I say all of this because we are extremely discerning about food quality, preparation, presentation, flavor and the overall experience when dining out. Some of my friends think I am a food snob. What do they know, having been raised on canned creamed corn and frozen potato patties. (Heathens)...I digress. Recently our youngest son requested Ethiopian for his birthday dinner. We were thrilled to oblige. Based on the yelp reviews for Gojo we ventured to this new place, for us. We were all very pleased with all aspects of the meal and can't say enough good things about it. Especially tasty were the lamb tibs and the beef dorowat, and each of the three different lentil dishes were distinctly unique, well spiced and absolutely delicious. Our oldest son and I were thrilled that they had Worthy IPA. (I'm so hopeful that Worthy Stout will catch on in Portland.) We all highly recommend Gojo as a wonderful restaurant and great dining experience. This place would be great as a date night place for people who are adventurous and like trying new things. For the rest of us who know Ethiopian, it is simply one of the top places we've had the pleasure to eat at. read more

This place was delicious! We were on our way to soup-dumpling heaven when we passed by this restaurant and decided to give it a shot. Great decision. The Ethiopian beer was tasty (even by Portland standards), and the food was amazing. We got the spicy chicken and vegetable combo and it was more than enough food for the two of us. The restaurant is family owned and operated and the owners are very nice and personable. Upon considering relocation up to Portland, my husband and I needed to find an Ethiopian restaurant that is comparable to the variety we have in Berkeley. Gojo did not disappoint. Portions were generous, though they don't include any sides at all with the main meat dishes. We are used to a little salad and maybe a little collard greens or chickpeas. Prices are very reasonable. Injera was fresh, spongy, and tart. Our leftovers were still delicious two days later. read more
