I have to upgrade KooKoo to five stars. There is nowhere else around this area that has such delicious, fresh, and healthy food with a drive thru option. I have now also tried the popcorn shrimp salad and the California Roll. The salad was MASSIVE. I ended up taking well over half of it home. It was packed to the brim with loads of fried shrimp, fresh avocado, onions, tomatoes and more. And the thousand island dressing was really good. The California Roll was also excellent. Last night we went back for a second visit and this time took my Dad, who is pretty picky. He actually liked it. He ordered the beef teriyaki bowl with vegetables and enjoyed it. He said it was tasty and pretty filling. My better half had the beef teriyaki tacos without cilantro and onions and enjoyed it again. As for me, I had a chicken taco salad and enjoyed it myself. KooKoo Grill Teriyaki in Bellflower seems like a nice option for a work lunch particularly if you use the drive-thru because cars seemed to go through it quickly. It's super casual just in case you intend on dining in. Seemed clean. But when I went (2/23/15) I got my order to go. It was around 11:30 a.m. There were just a couple of people in the dining room. I ordered. A couple came in after me. Ordered. Then they got there order before me. I think it was because I ordered the 3-piece veggie eggrolls ($3.25) which were made fresh and were nice and crispy like I like them. The only other item I ordered was the small shrimp bowl ($5.29) with brown rice (extra $.50). Had I not ordered the delicious veggie eggrolls, I would have still been hungry. My total without a beverage came out to $9.83. Honestly, I kind of though the price of the small bowl was a little high. Still, the shrimp was cooked nicely and everything tasted fine. The shrimp still has the tail on it. I know some people eat the tails, but they weren't crispy enough for that in my opinion. Just know this all you non-shrimp tail eaters! The wait for the veggie eggrolls was about 15 minutes (I watched the girl prep my to-go bag). :( Maybe this is why they suggest that you call your order in on their receipt. The girl at the register was nice. Debit & credit cards are accepted. Parking shouldn't be a problem. Relatively loud music was drowning out ESPN on the TV that day. They currently have an A from the Health Department, but I didn't check out their restrooms as I got my order to go. It's not a fusion restaurant that you need to drive right away to, folks. But if you're in the area, they have quite a bit of items on their menu and nice service. I'd probably go again to dine-in with a friend, but I'd probably try something like the "teriyaki beef burrito" as my Yelp buddy Jessica G. suggested. As the name suggests this is a fast food joint that serves variety of teriyaki flavored items but make it little more interesting by incorporating them into tacos, burritos, and fried balls. What I really like is their KooKoo Balls (with chicken). It almost looks like fried balls at Seoul Sausage except these are much crispier on the outside and has a thicker outer shell. The rice pretty much makes up the entire outer shell and inside is filled with teriyaki chicken pieces. It's crispy and chewy at the same time. It kind of reminded me of eating crispy rice (on tuna crispy rice at sushi joints) and sesame balls (served at dim sum place) at the same time. It comes with a teriyaki dipping sauce which is slightly spicy. The teriyaki beef tacos weren't as good as I expected. Main problem was the beef. It didn't have much flavor and was a bit too chewy. I could barely taste any teriyaki flavor, almost as if someone forgot to marinade them. However, the hot sauce on the tacos were tasty enough to offset the lack of flavor in the meat. I go koo koo for KOO KOO BALLS! Thanks to my work, I was sent to Bellflower for a full day training so I decided to try KooKoo Grill for lunch. I love unique Asian fusion dishes and this place did not disappoint. I took my coworkers with me and they loved their food as well. The three of us ordered 4 chicken tacos, 4 beef tacos, and an order of 3 Koo Koo balls (1 order comes with 3 balls). This was enough for the three of us to share and we had some tacos left over after our meal. The fusion tacos are similar to Mexican tacos but made with teriyaki marinated chicken and beef. They add scallions and cucumbers on top and a delicious spicy sauce. The Koo Koo balls is something you MUST order if you come here! I told my coworkers to place another order and they really regret not ordering it. These Koo Koo balls are sesame battered, deep fried crispy rice balls with chicken, cheese, and spicy sauce inside. The portion sizes are pretty big so I would definitely suggest ordering a couple dishes and sharing. Tip* Restaurant is easily visible on Woodruff and there's plenty of parking in the plaza. There's a bathroom, but it's for customers only and you must ask for a key. Their food is a mixture of Japanese, Korean, and Mexican influences. Chicken and beef were both tender and flavorful. No need to add any extra sauce, but I did add a little extra hot sauce. Siracha goes good with just about anything. We got the Teriyaki Beef Tacos (4) and the KoKo Fries (that comes in a taco fried bowl). The food looked good but it wasn't good as I would have expected it to taste. I thought it would be very flavorful and be craving the next bite. The Teriyaki Beef Tacos were good, but they didn't have the "green sauce" like other tacos/burritos joints would have. But they had regular salsa to go with the tacos. Other sauces they had were Shiracha sauce, teriyaki sauce, and other sauces. They had those big jalepenos and the big fried jalepenos YUM. I tried the half & half (chicken/beef) burrito, and it is definitely a Japanese/Mexican fusion. It reminded me of a sushi roll (especially the rice part) with taco flavor AND teriyaki - everything conveniently put together in one flour tortilla to make an out-of-this-world burrito. I could only finish half in one sitting, and saved the rest for later. I'm excited to try the Koo Koo Fries next; it reminds me of animal fries from In & Out, but 10 times crazier. My husband and I like coming here after a long week of work and treating ourselves to some of their delicious BomBom fries. My husband usually orders the fries and I get the 4 piece fusion tacos ( half chicken half beef). These are absolutely scrumptious. Between the fries and the tacos we are usually stuffed. You can order inside or go thru the drive thru which is what we usually do on our way home from work. My friends and I had really high hopes for KooKoo Grill, especially because of all the amazing reviews and pictures! We ordered quickly and our orders were served within 15 minutes. Service was good! KooKoo Balls: the flavor was good, but the texture of the rice was so sticky. It just got stuck in my teeth and made it hard to enjoy. It was similar to Porto's potato and meat balls, but instead of potato, these are made with fried rice. KooKoo Beef Wrap: I was very excited to try this, it looked so delicious! However, I wasn't expecting it to have such a spicy kick. I definitely like spicy food, but this was a bit much for me and it's hard to enjoy food when you feel the urge to constantly get rid of the spicy flavor in your mouth with a whole cup of water. Teriyaki Beef Bowl: pretty basic, I didn't notice or taste anything really out of the ordinary. Yet another place I've known about for a couple of years but finally made my way to try it. One thing I've continuously heard from those who have eaten here is to go for the KooKoo fries so figured I'd give that a shot. Like all other food outings this wasn't going to be my only order. The KooKoo wrap sounded decent so I also put in an order for that along with a California roll. The KooKoo fries are flavorful but not because of the fries themselves. The fries are topped with grilled chicken then smothered with 1000 Island, sour cream, pico de gallo, KooKoo sauce, and cheese. Sauce-wise this dish had a lot going on but surprisingly you are able to taste the individual flavors. The winner is the KooKoo sauce that has a flavor similar to hoisin sauce but with a spicy kick. It is the sauce with the least portion on the fries but stood out more than the others. If you'd like more, the sauce is available at the counter for self-serving. The wrap contained both grilled chicken & beef. There isn't anything in terms of flavor that makes this wrap stand out from others I've had at other Asian fusion restaurants but no worries, bring on the KooKoo sauce! Still a decent wrap as a whole and the meat portion is very generous. The California rolls were just standard but that was expected so no disappointment there. It's a fusion place so you get a combination of Asian and Mexican flavors, which I'm a huge fan of. We ordered the koo koo wrap with beef (imagine a huge stuffed quesadilla) ($9.16), the beef and veggie rice bowl ($9.49), and a cheeseburger ($3.59). Loved everything, including the cheeseburger, which I thought would be mediocre given KooKoo's style of food, but even the burger was great. Since they are fusion I decided to get the egg rolls because the picture shows a inside out egg roll bowl which would make sense. The egg rolls were regular style and stuffing was okay. Actually the egg rolls turned out to be the only thing my husband liked. He ordered 4 bom bom chicken tacos and picture shows with avocado but didn't show up with avocado. To find out it's an add in. Bait and switch. He said they were bland. The California roll. Just don't. The piece of avocado inside the roll you could barely see it. They were also warm which just grossed me out first bite. Out of the many Asian/Mexican fusion places that have opened over the years, this is definitely one of the better places I have been to! Went on a Saturday night and the service was excellent, and I didn't know this but the place also has a drive thru which is pretty neat. It didn't seem like they were busy so we got our food in about 5 minutes. I ordered the BomBom Balls and the Chicken Wrap and my girlfriend had the Popcorn Chicken. The balls were tasty and reminded me very much of falafel, though they are not vegetarian and have meat in them. They are crunchy and a lot warmer on the inside and are a must if you come here, as it is an item that I have never had elsewhere !!! The wrap was also pretty damn good, and not to mention filling. The only thing that was kind of lacking was the popcorn chicken, which was not that great and came in the form of small balls of chicken as opposed to chunks of chicken that I am familiar with from other places. By far one of the better Teriyaki's I've had in a while!! Definitely better then the mainstream teriyaki spots such as Waba, Flame broiler and such on... Quality is Great!
