Was driving past Hartford and wanted a nice restaurant. We always like Indian food and were curious about the Nepalese and Persian food. We all loved our meal and are glad we stopped here. The Bombay Olive biryani, chicken tikka masala, grilled lamb skewers, and sag paneer were all delicious. Similar to our favorites but with a slightly different flavor. The waiter talked with us about Nepalese food and invited us back for the buffet. We will take him up on the offer the next time we drive by on a weekend. read more

Enjoyed the weekend buffet with my husband today! The interior is small, but with plenty of booths and a couple larger tables. We arrived during a quiet lull, but the dining room quickly filled back up, and with it the food continued to come out hot and fresh! We tried a little bit of everything and it was all delicious. Standouts were the goat curry and Chana saag. Service was great! They are extremely hospitable. It feels a bit like you've sat down in someone's dining room which is really nice. But I loved that I ordered online and still was treated to yummy, gratis papadum and dips I had the goat vindaloo med+ spicy and honestly wish I had gotten the hot level. It was spicy just not as much as I like. I also got the Baingan barta and this is where Bombay lost one of the stars. It was good, just wasn't as flavorful as I've had before. The Samosa chaat was okay, it tasted a bit like it has bitter chicken sauce in it which was a turn off, other than that it was okay. Service was good. I finally made my way in for a meal last night. The first thing you see when you walk in is the remnants of their old buffet table. They were known for their lunchtime buffets, but they're now a thing of the past. The good sized dining room has a tin ceiling, yellow painted walls, and dark brown furniture. As I sat down, a super friendly young guy brought me a complimentary plate of papadum cracker bread with ramekins of onion chutney and tamarind sauce. The tamarind was great, like a thick and sweet Hoisin sauce. Now it was time to check out their daunting five page menu. I wanted to try something different, and the phrase "prepared in the Afghan style" caught my eye. Since never have I ever tried Afghan food, I went with their $16.95 Chicken Balti. Served with Basmati rice, the menu described it as with "peppers, onion and cinnamon". I wasn't familiar with the word "Balti", so I researched it and learned the word means a metal pot from Northern India (near Afghanistan) that cooks the food and is then presented to the table for serving. When I ordered, my young waiter asked if I wanted it spicy, so of course I said yes. In a few minutes out came a bowl of Basmati rice and a Balti pot full of chicken chunks, sliced peppers and onions, in a delicious spicy brown curry. I LOVED my dinner! The curry was delicious, with plenty of the deep flavors I love in Indian food. And yes, it was medium spicy with a nice after-burn. I did think the chicken was a little overcooked, and far from tender. All in all, I loved my dining experience at Bombay. The food and smiling service were excellent. read more

Yummers! First off, this review is specific to a delivery order I received over the weekend. The usual joint where I get delivery from was not yet open (perhaps they're just open for dinner, not sure). Anyway, I felt I needed some chicken tikka masala that day so Bombay Olive was next up to the plate. I think I used GrubHub to order from them but, when the order was delivered they placed a nice little card in the bag telling me that it's cheaper to order directly from the restaurant (can do, will do, in the future). I got an order of mild chicken tikka masala and plain naan. It was pretty dang delicious and filled me up for 3 full meals. The chicken was so plentiful. I swear I got two full breasts in meaty, tasty chunks. Next time I will request a hint spicier than what I received (I was being cautious). Great food, decent pricing, plentiful portion. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for years. . I think the food is good. They have a program where they offer Bombay points. The rewards are offered relating to how much spend. Each time I go there I get a receipt for rewards and they make it very difficult to use. Today was the last straw. I had $16 in rewards and they would not accept it unless I used a credit card and that would not allow me to use rewards. The customer service is the worst. I would avoid it. We were so fortunate to find this delicious gem while out of our area for an appointment. We will return again! We ordered: Samosa Chaat (described on their extensive menu as: well-cooked vegetable samosa sliced and tossed with yogurt, onions, chickpeas, tamarind sauce, mint sauce, and chaat masala.) Channa Masala (described on their extensive menu as: chickpeas cook in Indian herbs. Masala is known as a royal dish. I picked up some food last night and it was apparent that the food wasn't freshly made. We picked it up on time (20 minutes after ordering). The two orders of chicken tikka masala were warm instead of hot, and the garlic naan was borderline cold. It was crumbly and disappointing. The whole meal was like eating leftovers, and the price wasn't cheap. Lastly, we ordered samosas and they didn't include the sauce, and no they didn't pack up any papadums to go either. Seems like one of the most underrated restaurants in the Hartford area. The service was really sweet (they gave my son a toy to play with and brought him a cup of mango lassi on the house) and the food was outstanding. We got the momos, the vegetable lentil soup, and the non-veg thali for two. It was so much food for a great price and a lot of fun to try each dish. If you are up for a variety of things, like chicken Tikka, chana, dal, and vegetable soup, then it's a great choice. Mostly booths but a large party came in and several tables were out together for them, making the edge of their table pretty close to our booth, luckily we were almost done. The staff were very friendly. The menu was large so it was very difficult to choose! We got the samosas, which I liked but noticed the dough was a little salty for my taste, my boyfriend didn't even notice lol. I am pretty boring when it comes to my Indian food because I never get to really go out for so I got the baingan bhartha with medium spice, which was def a little spicier than I anticipated (I always get medium) but was very good! Following a recent third visit, I decided it was time to put in on the record. My introductory visit was a bachelor night and no where to go, except some place unique. Unique, because Bombay Olive is housed in a former IHOP where I spent many early and late night meals with friends and family in the '70's. It's architecture is unmistakeable on the outside and transformed inside to a comfortable Indian and Nepalese tavern. Visit One: I requested takeout and admitted I had really no idea what to order, so the kind staff ordered for me (within a mild heat range). Loved it right out of the carry out packaging; gosh I miss the good old bachelor dazes. Visit Two: In house, with the family. Gluten free options and a little more heat this go round. A mop towel was necessary for my brow and nape. Again, fresh, delicious, and an aromatic mix of spices. Visit Three: A FRYday night with the Mrs. Recent enough that I can actually remember the dishes! Fried Manchurian Vegetables (mild) and Chicken Madras (Medium and comfortable warm - mop towel necessary) the coconut hints throughout. A very interesting mix of Persian, Tibetan and Indian dishes. My order of Persian kabobs was almost perfectly cooked. Was really impressed with how much flavor they got from rice that did not have any obvious strong flavor elements. My partners tikka massala was very flavorful and had reasonably ample amounts of meat (an issue some other places we have gotten the dish.. I've had individually better momos and naan from other places that specialized only in that, but they were tasty enough here that they didn't detract from the range of flavors I was experiencing. Lastly, I am not normally someone that cares much about attentiveness of wait staff, but it was so prominent here that I had to note them in this review. The staff were amazing . Came here for their lunch buffet, which is available 7 days a week for about $13. They have a pretty standard array of offerings including tandoori chicken, naan, a paneer-based (farmer's cheese) dish, both vegetable and meat curries, salad, and even dessert. Service is kind and attentive, but not bothersome. They clear plates quickly. The interior is, as you might assume, decorated with Indian themes, with Bollywood music videos playing on some of the TVs. I'm a big fan of the lunch buffet because it lets you try a little bit of everything (or in my case a lot of everything). Everything I tried was tasty and full of flavor. Ordered delivery through the Yelp app. Was expecting delivery about an hour after I placed the order but it arrived in 30 min which was a great surprise. Got the butter chicken and chicken briyani - requested both to be mild but was not spicy at all which surprised me as usually Indian food is spicy to begin with. ((I'm Polish therefore cant handle spice but enjoy a little. If I thought it wasn't spicy, it really wasn't. Next time I will order medium spice but if you really like spicy- request it hotter!)) I've been sleeping on this place and authentic Indian food in general. If you're looking for a place to get quality Indian dishes, stop scrolling and come here. The depth of the flavors of the sauces is so deep and complex. The spices have a beautiful range that's not limited to just straight vertical heat level like traditional hot spices and hot sauce. When it first came out, the dishes looked small. But the deep bowls are deceiving and I even had enough for a leftover meal. This is in contrast to the normal westernized large plate, and served family style. To keep everything warmer longer. The customer service was also top tier. Seemed like every front of the house staff wanted to check-in and make sure we were happy, even if they weren't our waiter. And plenty of containers for organizing the leftovers. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala (medium spice) which had a good heat for me. A little too spicy for my friend, who got a Butter Chicken (mild). Both were amazing in their own ways. Been coming here for over a decade, the food is consistently phenomenal and we've had nothing but supremely pleasant interactions with staff. I can recommend the paneer chilli and the nepali spring rolls as two favorite appetizers, also we are in love with the shrimp madras and chicken tikka masala. On Mother's Day we ordered takeout and i tried the chicken do piaza for the first time, and i'm so glad i did. The chicken was tender and the tomato-yogurt sauce was just such a delicious flavor. This is the first time I was able to sit inside Bombay Olive to dine since the beginning of COVID-19. The inside is elegant! I highly recommend the Samosa Chaat as an appetizer to share but it very well could be a meal in itself. If you have ever had samosas, it is cut up into pieces and topped with yogurt, chickpeas, and my favorite, tamarind sauce. I also had the paneer tikka masala which was nothing short of delicious. We were craving Indian last night and after discovering that India in West Hartford center closed, we thought we would try Bombay Olive again. We had only been here for the buffet lunch once a few years ago. We came in around 8pm on a Saturday night and almost all the booth tables were full! (Good sign that it's busy, even later at night, right!?) We were seated and water and table settings were brought. We ordered two dishes and garlic naan. The two dishes were Chicken Korma and Lamb Mango Jalfraizi. The food came relatively quickly but we got regular naan. We didn't complain and just ate that plain naan (and were not charged for garlic so it was fine). The dishes were pretty good but I thought the lamb dish was lacking meat. There was broccoli and carrot chunks on it so it looked full of stuff but really only minimal pieces of meat. If you've ever eaten Indian before you know it can get spicy. I ordered a coke which was refilled once before the food came but our waters were never refilled and my husband ended up eating his ice because we couldn't get anyone's attention. Overall, the meal was ok, but service was great. We paid our bill, which was about $40 before tip and walked out... however none of the 5 employees hanging around the door said goodbye or thank you. I really enjoy this place. I have come to the lunch buffet before and it is quite impressive but this place is my go-to for Indian take out. The naan is incredible, always double order...trust me... The Tomato-Garlic soup...always order two. Most times I end up having a couple spoonfuls with my meal but I save it. The BEST. I cannot repeat that enough...always get the soup! This place has made my super picky girlfriend enjoy Indian food. Paneer Tikka is my favorite. Malai Kofta is a close second...depends on my mood. BEST INDIAN FOOD! My boyfriend and I were traveling through the area for work and we were craving Indian food. After looking at the menu and seeing the reviews we were so excited to try the Nepali Thali Special for 2 (dine in only). This was the next best thing for us since most restaurants aren't doing buffets anymore due to COVID-19. We felt that this was also the cheapest option as it came with an appetizer, delicious soup, a myriad of small entrees, naan bread, and one of my favorite desserts, gulab jamun. Needless to say, by my 5 star recommendation, everything was delicious and perfectly spicy (we ordered medium spice). I would give 6 stars if I could!!!
