There is no care or concern for patients here. Horribly insensitive, bureaucratic, and dishonest about care available and received.

My 92 year old mother was a patient at HDH/Forest for 10 days for CHF and AFib. Firstly, she was…read moreadmitted to an Oncology/Med Surg Unit for heart issues and did not receive a telemetry box for at least 18 hours. The nursing / hospitalist care was horrific. She received too much IV Lasix by day-3 and was weak, shaky, and severely dehydrated. Nurses were instructed by the cardiologist to give all her meds before her Cardioversion and she didn't receive any (including her blood thinner). Also, when one of her blood thinner pills fell to the floor, the male nurse told her she could skip it for the day. She was left alone in her room at the end of the hall with the door closed tightly when she became disoriented, agitated, and confused. One morning, her 9am pills were still sitting on her table at 12:30pm bc the nurse didn't make sure she took them (when she was confused). When the "nurse" was confronted about her untaken meds and the door being closed, she put her hand in my face and walked away stating she was "going to give me a minute". She had to use the call button repeatedly to ask for help reaching her food tray, only to be ignored, and finally received help when the hospitalist came in her room. She did not receive any hygiene or oral care unless I asked for clean sheets, washcloths, and towels, and then I did the care for her - not the employees. Apparently, hygiene and oral care is no longer a routine part of nursing care and patients can go days without it, unless they have an advocate to facilitate it. Every day she was a patient at HDH she became weaker and had more issues. Finally, there was a huge cockroach in her bathroom that I smashed with my shoe. The nurse manager argued that it was a water bug...it was NOT. This is actually the second time I've seen a cockroach in this hospital. I have vowed to never return to this God-awful facility and have asked my family (and you) to go somewhere else if they want to live. For a previous ER Visit for my 92 year old mother with CHF and shortness of breath (on 12/16/25), the ER physician told us that "her case really isn't an emergency because the ER is for traumas, gun shot wounds, and heart attacks", but he proceeded to give her IV Lasix and admit her for CHF. Ugh...really? His personality was not suited for emergency medicine.

Picking a hospital to deliver your baby at always comes with concerns about if you picked the right…read moreone, what happens if something goes wrong, etc. I toured a few hospitals and ultimately decided on Henrico doctor's because it just felt right during the tour. Given everything that's happened recently, I was a little nervous, but we are so glad that we chose to deliver here. I was unexpectedly hospitalized with pre eclampsia at 36 weeks. The doctors and staff kept me overnight for monitoring and decided I needed to have my baby. They made sure they educated us on all of our options and step by step what the plan was. My delivery was so much less stressful than when I had my son, even though it wasn't exactly an easy birth. All of the nurse staff and NICU nurses/doctor were in the room ready in case they were needed, which they were. A nurse stood by my bed holding my hand calmly explaining what was going on with baby so I wouldn't panic. The neonatologist has my partner call me on the phone to discuss what exactly was going on instead of trying to have a sleep deprived person try and relay everything. They also got us set up with their app to monitor our baby 24/7 in the NICU. The nurses did everything they could to get vitals on me overnight but not wake me. They regularly checked in to make sure I didn't need anything. If the camera for baby was moved or turned off because of diagnostics, the nurses called the NICU to have it put back on. Every place has a few bad eggs but our experience here overall has been so amazing in so many ways. Diane in the NICU has been the most comforting nurse to work with while our baby girl is staying there. Our first night hospitalized, Meagan made sure to check on us regularly, keep us informed on everything and answer any questions, and just good off with us some to help us relax. If you're on the fence about this hospital for delivery, you can't go wrong. We are forever grateful for everything and everyone here during this experience. Update: My daughter was in the NICU for almost 3 weeks. They had just opened back up so we were slightly nervous. They have an app for you to watch your baby when you can't be there. The first neonatologist we met was great at explaining what was going on and giving a clear treatment plan with the goals she needed to meet. After a few days we had a different neonatologist who also was great and even said we could be a little more forgiving with her goals so we thought maybe we'd get her out sooner. We had to call up there a few times to ask them to turn on the camera as it had been off for hours. After repeatedly having issues and being upset after a meeting with the occupational therapist we were assigned, I spoke to the director of the NICU. She was so understanding and met with me every day or two for a week to check in. We came in one day and had a third neonatologist. Their plan was different than the other two and my fiance and I just got very frustrated. The doctor talked to us to see what the frustration was and what they could do to help. Throughout her stay there were a few miscommunications, however overall we were very happy with their care for her. Leanne was her nurse for the last few days and she was fantastic! She left us little notes on her swaddle to let us know how she had done at her most recent feeding/check in. When she walked us out to the car she gave us a hug and told us to keep them updated. Except for one nurse that answered the phone when we called once, everyone we met in here was very caring. I changed my review to 4 stars only because it was very frustrating having the camera off a lot or it wasn't working.

I have no idea why this place is scoring badly…read more Let me admit, because of the bad reviews on Google and Yelp I was really skeptical about coming here. But I always like to form my own opinions. So I decided to come here to get medical care. I planned to be here for at lease 5-6hours. Therefore I ate a nice lunch, brought me some chips and a soda. I also made sure I charged my phone and brought my tablet. Too my surprise this was about to be the most in and out hospital visit I've ever had. I arrived at 1:03pm (on a average Tuesday afternoon). I was greeted soon as I walked in. They also saw that I was hopping on my foot so they got me a wheelchair. At this point I was rolled straight to check in. After they checked me in, They took me to registration right away. While in registration they got my vitals & even the doctor came over to assess me. Right on the spot He ordered X-rays for my foot. Although I did wait a few moments (maybe 20 mins?) before they put me in a room. I was so amazed at how fast things was moving. Once I got in my room, a few moments later a nurse come and check on me. Then Another doctors came in to assess me and Even the X-ray unit came to me! I couldn't believe they took my X-rays right there in my room! I thought that was very innovative . After getting my X-rays taken, I experienced another brief wait as the doctored waited for my X-rays to view and give me my diagnosis . Maybe 20/30 mins later the doctor came in with her findings. Sprain ankle, They wrapped my foot real good.Gave me some pains meds, documents and a work note. I am so grateful for this painless process. Not even 3 hours later and I was ready to discharge. That was so fast!!! The staff here are amazing, attentive, comforting and knowledgeable! Sincerely a Happy patient.

My dr in NC told me to go to this ER specifically though I don't understand why. After reading their Google reviews, I was extremely hesitant to. I followed his advice though & went. Walking in, I felt like I was going to visit a friend in prison or something. I was met by an unfriendly officer at the metal detector entrance with his wand & rough demeanor. The way he tore through my purse looking for weapons and mace, you'd think I was getting booked. After I passed his "test", I was allowed to walk in to check in. The line was short to check in, BUT the sea of sick patients and their 1 visitor was abundant. There was literally like 2 seats available between 2 waiting areas. There were 3 officers sitting at the desk & I was very shocked when I was told there were 47 people ahead of me. 47??? Once I was triaged, I was taken directly to an ER room due to my condition. Lucky me...eyeroll. I was met by nurse Amanda who was funny, but the nurse practitioner was rude and told me that my NC dr botched my surgery. Ummm, what??? My surgery wasn't botched. They just didn't want to go behind what he did and cauterize the area that was bleeding. They tried to convince me to leave & not wait to speak to ENT. I waited anyway. The ENT specialist came in trying to gag me to death with the tongue suppressor and some other tool. Umm, HELLO!!! I had my surgery under anesthesia, so how the heck do you think you can try to do the same thing with me wide awake??? If I had any food in my stomach, I would've definitely thrown up on her. It would serve her right too!! The experience was painful & disturbing. After that, I was admitted for observation. Every single nurse/care partner I met in the CPU department were great. They clearly love their jobs. The ER staff needs to take some notes. I ended up being discharged this morning. They still didn't cauterize the area. They just "watched" me overnight to make sure it didn't bleed & then they told me to stay on a liquid diet until the weekend in hopes that the area will heal. I somewhat recommend them. I feel that if they would've cauterized the area, I wouldn't have to worry about the issue anymore. Instead, I have to HOPE it doesn't bleed again & if it does, come back to them. That is a complete waste of time and money. Just do it right the first time. Oh, and one more thing...please protect yourself in the ER waiting room. It is dirty, social distancing isn't even possible, and almost no one is wearing their masks correctly. I felt like I was going to get sick just sitting around some of those patients. It is completely disgusting.

I…read morewent in to the emergency room after a visit patient first who told me that I had a lot of anomalies in my blood work along with a few other issues and they sent me straight to the emergency room. When I got there, they ran the initial blood tests and everything as well and found all of the same bloodwork anomalies. Well, all of the nurses in the ER were super nice, super helpful and helped me tremendously since I was by myself for quite some time. My boyfriend showed up and stayed with me until they were just getting ready to take me to a room, which was at 2 AM in the morning. So technically I'd sat in the ER room for 10 hours but because of all of the test testing and everything it pretty much went quickly. And I sent my boyfriend home around midnight to take care of our dogs. Anyways, the bathrooms in the ER we're fairly clean and well stocked. But you're also sharing bathrooms with 100 other people lol. When I finally got to my room, the nurse that was assigned to me on Night Shift got me hooked up to multiple multiple. IVs took vials and vials of blood and all the while making me feel very much at ease. I had this particular nurse for two nights in a row and she was nothing but sweet and kind. She allowed me to sleep through some of the things she had to do to get my vitals and everything. I ended up staying three nights and was allowed to be released Tuesday late evening. All of the food was not terrible lol not that I ate all that much. And the lady who delivered my food three times a day was the most happiest lady I've ever met. The only thing I hated was that because of all the IV lines and medication's and vials of blood being taken from me. I only had a short walk from my bed into the bathroom and couldn't even shut the door and had to wash my hands in the room because I couldn't even reach the sink in the bathroom. The doctor that was on the floor for most of my visit I found him kind of cocky at first, but as I got to know him better and was able to ask questions he turned out to be a pretty good guy. For those who were wondering, I had taken some water pills at home that were verbal apparently that depleted a lot of stuff in my system, including potassium, sodium, etc. So they got that fixed. Then the day before I was released, they found out I had pneumonia and had been misdiagnosed with bronchitis several weeks before and was on the wrong medication's and because that doctor had recommended me take Tylenol when I started running a fever somehow or other, I managed to overdose on Tylenol because it not only was in pill form, but it was also in other medication's. They had given me for the bronchitis so I had a whole lot of things going on, but I made it through. Happy to be home. I know this is a lot to read, but this is and was my experience.

A doctor in a different specialty insisted I go to the ER, where I was seen after less than a half hour although not arriving by ambulance, or bleeding or unconscious. l had several tests and two scans and was admitted in about 2 1/2 hours. It turned out I had pneumonia, although cardiac problems were a distinct possibility due to chemo I have been receiving since 11/24. After 4 days that included iv antibiotics, I was released and had a complicated plan of more antibiotics and inhalers after returning home. One morning in October, I didn't just spill coffee but dropped the cup as I filled it. Because I had seen my mother have a TIA ("mini stroke," I recognized that was what I was having. As doon as I arrived at the ER, I was signed in (but could barely sign my name by that time). I spent only 3 hours in the ER, having tests and scans, before I was admitted for several days. I had the same WONDERFUL ER nurse, Olga, as in May. Even with continuous monitoring of vitals, someone checked on me every 10 minutes or less, which was appropriate in the circumstances. I have made a nearly full recovery...this time, but repetitions of TIAs are likely with my age (80s) and other complex health history. P.S. I have experience with ERs in several other places I have lived...this is the best, and I have gone several other times in the last 14 years. For less urgent problems, I go to local walk-in freestanding clinics, but these two situations clearly required full hospital work ups.

In the fall of 2025, I got a simple x-ray on my foot, and Sentara charged me $442. The same procedure in the same location had cost me $80 in 2024. When I called, there was nothing they could do but send it through a nurse review. I haven't heard back about the nurse review, but after two weeks I just got a "new bill" that was the same as the old one. My insurance doesn't cover x-rays, but as I said, they charged me $80 previously for the same procedure in the same location. Now it's $442. This is grossly higher than the Virginia average of $103 or the national average of $280. I won't be able to afford another x-ray, even with a broken bone, unless I go elsewhere. Sentara is not recommended due to cost.
