I don't expect gourmet dining at a place like this, so with that in mind I actually enjoyed this little trip back in time. My only negative would be that the decor looked like it was stuck in time. It's been over 25 years that I have dined at a Bonanza Steakhouse. This location in Chambersburg PA, is one of the last remaining locations in the state. As you enter the lobby area, they have a counter to place and prepay your order. I ordered a 16 ounce Porterhouse steak for $24.95, which included choice of potato. For an additional $6.50, I added the hot bar. The hot bar was well stocked and everything that I had, was ready moist, fresh, and tasty. The porterhouse steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it and that was medium well. The steak was also properly seasoned and that's important as the seasoning made the entire steak taste like I ordered it from a 5 star steak house!! The porterhouse steak was cut thin and was under $25, as I was at a Bonanza steakhouse and not a 5 star steakhouse. I even went back up for some desert which was a real treat for me!! My server was very friendly and checked up on me as needed. I really appreciated the excellent service that she provided. I also observed other servers also providing excellent service and treating their customers with upmost respect! Tried Bonanza's breakfast buffet for the first (and probably last) time. The host didn't greet us, even when I said hello. Things went downhill from there. The eggs were so watery I almost needed a straw, and the pancakes were limp and soggy. The general vibe? Think "hospital cafeteria meets walk-in clinic waiting room." Everyone looked like they'd just called in sick, including a kid with a wet cough who was coughing over the food. Bon appétit! On the bright side, the biscuits and gravy were solid. It's not great, but it's a steak and it's inexpensive. A brief wait at the register while the hostess had to explain for about five minutes to a couple how the "senior deal" works. Tip: Put it up on the menu board. Decent salad bar with the usual stuff and it was kept tidy and stocked. There are actually a couple of different stops on the buffet, including two salad bars (one slightly healthier than the other), two hot bars and a large dessert bar. My steak was OK. Not great, but cooked as requested. It's served on a sizzling hot platter so it continues to cook while you eat. For me, this turned a medium rare steak past medium by the time I finished the last bite. Good baked potato. Dessert was pretty good. I opted for a small bowl of the blueberry cobbler and put some self-serve soft-serve on top. Yum. Close to $15 with tip for an 8 ounce steak? Good deal. read more

This is becoming a complete disaster. Took a family of 8 there last night. So many things that were wrong: Dirty plates on the buffet, not just once but pulled 3 plates that we're filthy not just a little food but a ton!! Dry leftover pizza. Why would you let that food quality on a buffet? You should be ashamed of that. Chicken finger supplier must have changed because they are all breading and overcooked Cinamon buns were black and tasted like molasses. This was on a Friday night, server only came back for our drink refills when we flagged her down. The food was great, nice and hot, with the food being refilled as the containers opened. The variety ensured that there was a little something for everyone. The service was exceptional with the waiters consistently checking to ensure that we always had everything that we needed. The facility itself was clean and tables were promptly cleared. I believe the food, atmosphere and the staff are all wonderful and a great and plentiful selection of buffet items are well maintained and kept fresh. I know Tina C's review on 2/29/24 was sour grapes over her sons employment and I know he failed to show up to work, didn't call and now shes upset ? I personally know Poor attendance was his issue and he doesn't have a good example to follow as his brother was a poor manager ( Short term ) and poor example himself. As well as Steph P's review as she might realize that the hair could have easily been from the guest also , it happens. I clearly see they follow the guidelines by wearing hairnets and hats, yes accidents happen, get another set of onions and just MOVE on...Get over yourself as things in life happen. Bugs and other critters exist in all food sources where ever you purchase your food from a grocery store, farmers market, your garden to a restaurant. Let people fix it and MOOVE ON. People need to understand all reviews are subject to scrutiny because there are those people like these people that are just willing to out right lie or try making something up because their feelings were hurt, or its their way of getting back at a business by posting nasty & false comments on a social media site. We were recently hiking in the area and wanted a quick bite to eat and stopped in here. I have to be honest and say that we didn't know what to expect as we were not familiar with it. To our surprise, we were happily surprised. The restaurant was clean, totally followed the Covid guidelines, staff was more than friendly, and the food was good. It was very obvious that the management/owners of this restaurant really invest time in their employees as all of them were friendly, positive, hard working and could not have provided better service. My husband and I stopped here for a late lunch, early dinner 8/30 around 3:30 pm. I ordered the sirloin steak w/baked potato and salad. My husband went with the buffet. The items he got at the buffet looked really good and he said as much. In particular the clam chowder, which was creamy, hot and steaming. Everything he had was either hot or cold as it should have been. I was less happy with my meal however. The steak was cooked properly but both the steak and the potato were lukewarm at best. My wife and son both got chicken and it was literally raw. Barely cooked at all, so much so that every piece was pink and cold. That is serious. I managed restaurants for 10+ years and I am a ServSafe Proctor. This is unacceptable, especially if something as hard as ( Step 1- Place Chicken in deep fryer Step 2- Wait until Chicken has been cooked ) can't be conquered. Well it doesn't have a good variety of food. The ice cream machine wasn't in service. The potatoes had an actual hair in them. Unreasonable prices, and extra pay for steak, ect. I ate here with my adult daughter and 2 grandchildren in early May. The restaurant was clean and busy. The staff kept the food tables stocked. There was a wide variety of options in every category. We just got the buffet (no steaks) and found plenty of tasty food to sample. I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews - it's very typical buffet fare. The staff was polite and worked really hard. Slight unprofessional but nothing bad. Just young kids for you. I ordered the 1 lb porterhouse and wife got the steak tips. She ate one piece and wouldn't eat another bite of them. Said they tasted awful. My steak was over cooked, very thin(maybe a 1/4 inch), tough,large amount of gristle, definitely not a 18$ steak. The buffet was below average. Food was edible but had strong taste of processed food. Nothing tasted "from scratch" or home made. Definitely came from a box or can. Very disappointing. Stopped by here after going through the mall jumpers, were 2 adults and 1 child. Very nice waitress, missed her name. First trip, to the salad bar. Everything cold like it should be, nice green lettuce. Very pleased. Second trip, to the hot foods. Picked up a sample of each. So let me start here, Fried chicken tasted like it had been soaking oil, mash potatoes were instant practically no flavor. Stuffing was extremely dried and was crumbling. Macaroni and cheese was cold. Meatloaf treated like it was frozen for a week. Mind you the service bar appeared not to been attended to for some time. I tried my plate and noticed my daughter didn't touch really anything, not she wasn't hungry but it just did not taste good. Only thing we found good was the rolls.... I talked to our waitress, and she the manager. When this lady came over and I expressed my concerned of the food not being fresh, more like frozen out of boxes. She started laughing at me. She runs and gets another manager and I start collecting our things. The next manager comes and I explained to him, he took me serious and he admitted that his steaks were frozen... And I'm thinking to myself, a long with everything else. His justification for this was "they had no complaints and served 400 people and no complaint. When the restaurant probably hasn't seen 100. No offer to remedy, nothing, just started laughing himself like I was some crazed man. First and last time I will go there. And I'll send a copy to corporate. $30 wasted. We don't pay too much attention to reviews and try different restaurants ourselves. If we like the food and service we'll be back, if not, well we tried it. Our experience was terrible. First of all you pay before you get your meal which includes a line for gratuity. I would never pay a tip before experiencing the service and meal. We both opted for the buffet plus the sirloin and potato. Buffet was skimpy at best. I prefer my steak medium rare so they bring it out on a sizzle plate which continues to cook your food. When I cut into my steak and took the first bite it was more very well done and tough as leather. The waitress asked if I wanted another steak. Why would want another dry, tough steak.
