I've been to many a Bonchon at this point, but I feel like I need to point out that at this location, their chicken are HUGE. Both the drumsticks and wings are considerably bigger than you typically see at restaurants. Definitely cost effective if you eat a meal there and need leftovers for another meal. I'm deducting a star because it's really weird to me that they won't take phone takeout orders. They recently have opened up online/app ordering but they charge a $2.99 service fee per order. So if you don't want to pay the fee, you have to place takeout orders in-person. Super inconvenient. And what about the older folks who aren't comfortable with tech and can't order online? Now they have to come in person to place takeout orders. And their chicken does take some time to prepare so everyone has to wait in person. It just doesn't make sense to me. I would get it if when they first opened up, they accepted phone orders but people cancel without notice so they change their policy. But this isn't the case, it's been like that since they opened. It's literally for this reason we don't eat here frequently. With a young kid now, we just don't have time to have to go place orders in person and wait. read more

Mine progressed into a appendicitis and was rushed to the hospital Friday, surgery Saturday. The chicken here SMACKS so hard. It's so damn crispy and juicy. Listen, I know Korean's have that super power where they can eat at any spicy level. I'm not like that. I'm sensitive. They ended up serving my chicken with a light drizzle of the spicy sauce and it was perfect! A nice sweet heat to pair with an ice cold beer on tap. The service here was also amazing. I love their spicy chicken wings! Everything else I order from here doesn't hit the spot as much as the chicken but that's just me. I tried their salmon avocado ball which just reminded me of a crab cake. It also had chopped cucumbers and imitation crab inside overall the ball didn't have that much flavor. read more

I'm sad to give it such a low rating, but they keep getting worse. When the chicken is good, it's so good, but this place seems to keep having more and more problems. I've been going for a while, but the last two times, the wait time was very long to get food. Today at 6pm, it took 40 minutes to get my sit-down order after I ordered. Just a single entree. There was an endless line of very frustrated people trying to get pickup orders and no one in the restaurant was getting their food. Waitstaff was very frantic but not getting much done. They were arguing with each other and I heard one on the phone talking with someone who ordered through grubhub that never got their food and he was not being very understanding or helpful. Last time I was here, some of my food came out after a long wait and then one last dish I thought they forgot about came 20min later when I was ready to go and was going to ask them to just take it off the order. Really bummed because this location is close to me and the Newark one's chicken quality is also quite variable. I don't want to have to go to San Mateo to get consistency. Oh and one last thing: I have also experienced that no matter what chicken order you put in or request, you will still get mostly drummettes. read more

There were 5 people serving at least 15 tables on this Saturday night. With basic math, that means one person to 3 tables. You would expect it not to be hard to get orders in the right order right? Now logically speaking, if you come in first, and two parties come in after you, you would expect your food to come out first, right? Especially if the two parties who came in after you ordered more food than you? Yeah....nope. My girlfriend and I ordered a medium combo of wings/drums, with half garlic soy and half spicy. That's it. Two other tables ordered at LEAST 3 items. They somehow got theirs first, while we were waiting for our food to come. One random waiter (who didn't take our order) came by and asked if everything was good, and proceeds to check on our food. It took more time and a moment of them conferencing together at the front to determine what happened before we finally got their food. No sincere apologies. No follow ups after we got our food. From any of the 5 waiters/waitresses going around. I saw one table get two follow-ups in a span of 5 minutes. Even the original waitress who took our order proceeded to avoid our table, paying more attention to the Korean lady and her kids sitting to our left. She even gave my card and receipt to the table behind us before she sheepishly put it on my table and left. Yes, this isn't a 5-star restaurant. This is a run-of-the-mill Korean fried chicken restaurant. I don't expect exemplary customer service. I don't even expect exceptional food, because comfort food isn't supposed to be excellent. But I expect a restaurant staff to get their shit together, and what I witnessed on Saturday night was not the case. Bon Chon San Leandro staff, get your shit together. read more

I love the chicken here! It's BIG, moist, crispy and flavorful. I always order half soy garlic and half spicy because it's a good balance if you're looking for something savory and also a kick. They have other items on the menu too but I have yet to try them because I always get full off of the chicken. The service here is great, the place here is big, they have clean bathrooms, and there's TV's along the walls. My only downside are the pickled radishes that they have here. It's diced in small bits versus the traditional chunks/cubes that other Korean places do it. My solution? I just spoon them into my mouth :D Bone-apple-tea! read more

Food: I usually order the soy garlic or spicy soy garlic wings, they're decent. It's a glaze, rather than a sauce. Flavor-wise, I enjoy it as a small serving because it does lack some complexity, so I do get bored of eating them. You do get the change of pallet with the pickled daikon, but I rather see more complexity in the wings themselves. My girlfriend loves the pork buns, I think they're decent. Nothing really special stands out for me. Don't order then Bulgogi, that was horrible. It lacks so much flavor... Service: It's really a hit-or-miss. Verdict: If you haven't been to Bon Chon before, I would personally recommend it. It's a nice change of pace, and you get to see the Korean take of hot wings. If you have had Korean style hot wings, you come to find out that Bon Chon had became very "Americanized." What I mean by that is that, it does lack the authenticity of the Korean flavors; it is dialed down for the public. I've been here before COVID19 hit :) although it is a shame I could not come back here very often with my friends I will come back every now and then on occasions. The first time I came here was when I was about to start my first year of freshman in college BEFORE COVID19 crap, I went inside with my cousins. I tried the fried chickens, half and half with some other sides, although I do enjoy spice but can't have them cause one of them could not handle it, haha. I do enjoy the place and it is comfortable. During quarantining and trying my best to avoid going out as much as possible (I do not have COVID19) I was craving for Bonchon and came over to this place. They can only do takeout and can take GRUBHUB. While I was ordering I feel comfortable with one of the employee and he's very nice. Dropped in on a Friday night. Casual, but nice Korean restaurant. Got the wings and drumstick fried chicken special. Stayed away from the spicy stuff, which was a good choice because our fried chicken was very tasty. A bit dry, but that can happen with fried chicken. Got the cole slaw too. Good stuff. The bulgogi was also very tasty, but was mostly grilled onion with a small amount of beef for taste. Chicken fried rice was OK. Free refills on soda. Easy shopping center parking. Finally a Bonchon in San Leandro! I frequent this plaza so I've been waiting for this place to open for forever. I came here with my brother during their soft opening. It was Saturday and during lunch hours. We were seated immediately, with plenty of seating available. We could tell that they were still training their employees, hence the slower service and whatnot. I understand that it takes awhile to make KFC (Korean fried chicken), with the menu warning a 30 minutes wait. My review does not take into account their service because they are still in their soft opening. Also, take out is not available yet, probably so they can train their employees more. We ordered the 20 pieces of soy garlic wings. Oh boy! When it came out, we immediately regretted it because there were soooo many wings. Oops. But that's okay because the wings were super crunchy and well flavored. It was not too salty, not too sour. I only ate 4 pieces when I started to feel full. In the end, we only ate half of the wings. We took home the leftovers so our mom can try it. I look forward to coming back with friends, and waiting for and enjoying our KFC with some soju. read more

Loved everything, especially the Drums! Crispy, juicy (not greasy), and flavorful. Will be a regular go to. For the person that reviewed the wings as salty, but likes Soy Garlic wings... What do you expect... it's Soy and Garlic, both of which give a saltiness to the flavor profile. They should offset this by pairing them with something in the menu that has a more savory profile. I'm writing this after dining here two separate time during the soft opening (now over 3 weeks long). Here is a summary of my experience: Wait times: they are LONG! The first time, I came here with 2 other people on a Thursday at 6:30 PM. Took us 45 minutes to get seated. The second time, was on a Monday at 6:15 PM for 2 people. That time, we were seated right away. But by 7:00 PM, the small waiting area inside was full, and there were a bunch of people standing outside. At this point, don't expect to get in quickly, especially if you have a big party. The dining room holds about 40 people, tops, including the small bar counter. Service: yes, the service is slow. But this is why they are still operating as a soft opening... the staff are still trying to figure this all out. Plus, there is a "Now Hiring" sign at the front window, so they are definitely short staffed. I know the staff are trying their best, dealing with all us hungry and (some) impatient patrons. Give them a break and let them get back to work! Food: the food is why we come here: it is delicious! While I know there are other Korean items on the menu, I always get the fried chicken (at all Bonchon locations, not just here). If you aren't familiar with KFC, the chicken is served very crispy and already sauced (not available on the side). Each KFC dish is cooked to order, which takes about 30 minutes (again, be patient). And if you aren't used to Korean spices, the spicy sauce may be very hot for you. Get your order half and half (spicy / soy garlic) to be on the safe side. I enjoy the wings more than the drumsticks, which I found a little too large, since I enjoy the crispy skin. One of these days, I'll try the bulgogi or bibimbap (which smell really good passing by my table to another diner). Bathroom. Only a single person bathroom in the back-right of the place, with a short hallway from the dining room. No code, just make sure to knock before entering. Parking. This shopping center is super busy, so parking can be difficult. In the side where Bonchon is located, both McDonalds and Sizzler are present. Good luck! Overall, the dining experience is great as long as you know you cannot be in a rush. For now, they do not take to-go orders, though you can take any leftovers home (without any extra sauce). But this is the only place in San Leandro for KFC... we all know it, so we wait patiently for it. read more

Came here last Saturday night and waited about 25 minutes. My boyfriend and I got the medium soy garlic chicken. The chicken was delicious and we were surprised how huge the chicken pieces were. The only thing that needs some work though is making their customer service more efficient. Not sure why but instead of spreading out and having each person manage a specific section, we had about 4 different people asking us if we needed a to-go box and a check, but somehow all of them managed to forget and I had to go up to ask again. And when I finally saw the employees getting us the check, they had about 4 people surrounding the machine trying to figure it out. It seemed like every single task was a huge team effort. My usual chicken wing spot is San Tung in San Francisco, their wings used to blow my mind because it was so good. THISSSS is now my new favorite chicken wing spot. First because the skin is not thick and bready, but it is thin and yet so damn crispy! The amount of sauce was just right for me because I hate it when its drenched in sauce. This specific Bonchon is disgusting despite my past experience with other chain stores are very good. I love the all time famous fried chicken from Bonchon all these years and very happy the San Leandro opened in the area. HOWEVER, for some reasons, all (3) times I went to this place, the food quality is no where near acceptable or even safe for consumption - the oil they used seems very old and the meat is alllllwayyyys burnt to rock solid and taste like cardboard. I hope I don't get cancer from this. It's unclear how those "Elite" reviewers giving this place 5 stars. This is the worst Bonchon I've ever been to given the quality and preparation of the food. Super excited about Bonchon opening up in our small town of San Leandro. I had other Bonchons before (Elk Grove and Berkeley), so was thrilled to have one accessible within a 10 minute drive. A big chain restaurant that features delicious korean fried chicken...in of all places San Leandro...what's not to like about that?! Well after experiencing their soft opening, yah there are actually things to like and not like about Bonchon San Leandro after all. Let's start with the bad/things to improve on, since this is a soft opening/trial period. 1.) One bathroom - This is not good when you are in a place that serves food you eat with your hands 75% of the time you are eating here. If someone needs to do their business and you have 5 people waiting to wash their hands, yah that's not good for the grumpy folks waiting in line nor the poor person using the toilet. I would invest in another bathroom or at least a couple washlet sinks outside the bathroom area. 2.) Late afternoon sunset glare - I know they are trying by adding blinds, but the sun and summer warmth during those hours are no fun for the customers eyes. I would invest in some outside blinds/shutters to block out the sun fully for those hours. 3.) Untrained Staff - service is just slow. Don't get me wrong everyone is very nice, and I know its still a soft opening, but its still an opening and staff need to be ready and familiar with the menu, have more experienced staff be at the front to seat customers, etc. Now on to the good part about Bonchon San Leandro. 1.) Decor - nice modern sports bar atmosphere with a hip-ish environment. I guess this is standard Bonchon decor though. 2.) Food - chicken wings are well seasoned, and for spicy lovers man the spicy flavor is spicy. Good selection of beers, and a huge variety of food (from savory porkbuns to japchae to bimbim bap to a galore of fried wings and other apps) makes for a good foodie experience. 3.) Kid-friendly - ample space and available baby seats. 4.) Friendly Service - as I pointed above the staff are very friendly. Overall, I would go back again as their food is pretty good, and its so convenient for me. I do hope they work out the kinks though, so that this place will thrive for years to come. read more

Came for their soft opening and were the first people in the restaurant. Ordered a small wings and bulgogi. Our bulgogi came out fairly quickly and it was okay but definitely a little too sweet. After watching our friends (who sat at a separate table) get their wings, and the group next to us who ordered after get theirs, we started to wonder when our wings would come out. 20 minutes pass by, still no wings. By then, the restaurant was filled and guess what? The rest of the diners had their damn wings and we were left waiting. Now, 30 more minutes passed by and the lady who came out tried to tell us it was because the wings were made fresh so they take a long time. Ok. Sure. Tried Bonchon for the first time at the Sunnyvale location and it was delicious that I went searching for a location nearby. Let me tell you, it's NOT THE SAME! This was nearly inedible and gross. The wings were over done and dry. Ordered Soy Garlic and there was no flavor. I remember the wings at the other location to be coated in this sticky, crunchy deliciousness and these wings had no coating and were bland. I will not be returning to this location. This hurts me more than it hurts them. I LOVE Bonchon.... let me repeat that LOVVVVVVVVVVE. We ordered takeout during SIP via doordash. We live in Castro Valley and the food can't piping hot (Go Dasher!). This was the first time I saw wing tips attached to the wings from any Bonchon. It was strange but whatever it's still fried yummy chicken. As I start eating I noticed the nails were still attached. That's actually really f-ing gross. Look I'm no fool, chickens have wing tips and nails they're animals, I'm choosing to eat an animal but I don't need to see the toe or fingernail still attached to my food. The food tasted good but the nail situation just creeped me out. Please do what the other Bonchon's do and remove the wing tip. We will not order from this Bonchon again. read more
