My new favorite Chinese restaurant They called it "New Hong Kong " because of its regional cooking style. Better than the mainland China style of cooking. Better ingredients, better cooking ways. That all said: Compared to the rest of the Chinese food competition in the area, the meat portions are generous, meatier, bigger than others, some put too many vegetables to compensate for the lack of meat or small meat portions, the new Hong Kong gives you meatier, generous portions with just enough vegetables to enjoy the food. They used to have or do deep fried whole fish but they discontinued that one. The dining room area seemed small but spacious and clean. You scan the menu via your phone and order from there. If you call to order and no one answers and a Vmail comes in, just hang up and try again later, they are sometimes busy in the kitchen. Staff are accommodating. Open on Christmas Day. One of the few places open that takes reservations for large parties. We had a party of 17 and wasn't sure where we were going to eat. It was so nice to eat locally and have a good meal with great parking. They are in the Safeway shopping center and share a lot with them. The place is clean and bright, very inviting. Most of the party arrived before us so we were able to easily find our table. We were set next to the fish take, by the kitchen. It was a good arrangement. We had 2 tables with identical entrees. We ordered: Green Beans, Salt and pepper chicken wings, shrimp fried rice (Everyone's least favorite dish), Chow Fun, duck, and probably some other dishes. The green beans were the best dish. The chicken wings were good, but not as flavorful as people hoped, they probably won't be ordered again. The fired rice was a big disappointed, it had shrimp in it, but it lacked flavor. We didn't get a soup. We also had a steamed fish which was really good, coming from a not big fish fan. It was seasoned with soy sauce and was a big hit with the table. Even my picky nephew ate some. We also had calamari, it wasn't a big hit, we didn't even take it home with the leftovers. We all got tea and we asked for ice water for everyone which was drank along with the tea. If you request it they will bring out forks, my brother in law made the request. I was impressed even the kids used chopsticks. I definitely reccomend this restaurant. Especially for large groups. I've tried almost all of the Chinese restaurants in the area including those that are more expensive but New Hong Kong Restaurant is my favorite by far. I ordered takeout and the portions were large and scrumptious! The quality and flavor are also 5 stars! I can't give them any more than one star as they were unable to serve me. My phone was dead so I couldn't use the QR code menu. So I asked to see a paper menu, but they just looked around and confusion and could not produce one. They seemed to have no interest in figuring out how to serve me so ultimately I just walked out. Beware they do not have their health department pass displayed on their door or anywhere in the restaurant that was the first red flag. Also, we went in there with my family and we were looking for a chair for my baby's car seat and cashier/ONLY employee in sight was not very helpful and she was hesitant to let us use the big table to accommodate my family and I even though the restaurant was completely EMPTY we were the only patrons in there. We were sitting down for quite some time and were never offered any water or given menus nor received a welcome which was astonishing sees as they were not busy. The cashier just stood there on her tablet. I can't speak for the food because we didn't get a chance to try it; but again, I don't know why they don't have their health department score displayed. It's pouring today so we decided to get some takeout from this place. We got dinner plates. I got the kung pao chicken and my husband got the salt and pepper spareribs, both with chow mein. Our plates were EXTREMELY SALTY and lacking flavor :( Also, not a big deal, but there were no peanuts in my kung pao chicken even though the dish is named "with peanuts". The sweet and sour chicken had barely any flavor and was all breading and really tough chicken. The rice and noodles were fine though it is really difficult to screw those up. This review is for their delivery during the Shelter in Place during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. After a couple of days of cooking at home, we were getting ancy for something different. We remember NHK has a good lunch special list so jumped on Grub Hub to order for "no-contact delivery". We weren't hungry yet so planned it to deliver later (2:30pm). We got 3 lunch specials and my favorite is the shrimp with lobster sauce. All lunch specials come with fried rice or chow Mein and spring rolls. We also got black bean fish and an egg foo young. Each dish cost less than $8! The total gave us a coupon which we applied to get a free order of fried rice! Delivery was a little early so that was great. The driver called to say he was here. His English wasn't great so he didn't understand me when I said leave the items at the door for no contact. When i opened the door he was still there and said he needed a signature for the delivery. So much for no contact! And that's the minus one star. The dishes were good and what you'd expect from such a joint. We ordered: beef won ton soup, fried rice, shrimp chow mein, potstickers and szechuan beef. Soup - good Mein - so good and large shrimp. noodles were thicker noodles than other places and if your expecting thinner noodles, not the place Potstickers - yummy and lots of flavor Beef - eh, that's why I had to drop a star. It was very coated and unlike others we had tried. It was more like...hunan chicken? We didn't care for it but the kiddo did so it didn't go to waste. Food was delivered super hot and fairly quickly. This is my 3rd time ordering from this restaurant through Grubhub. The order was placed at 8pm and was told that it would arrive between 9-9:10pm. It didn't, so I called the restaurant at 9:20pm. At first, the person on the phone told me that the food was on the way, and then asked for my address, then told me there was no order. They started talking to someone on that end of the phone then told me that they're checking the computer and there isn't an order from me. Finally, they said that "oh I see your order but it didn't show up on our thing. I'll cook for you now, sorry" At 9:45, food finally got here but they were all disappointing. I've been eating here for about 20 years. They must have changed chefs and/or the place was sold. Everything I ordered tastes worse. The fried rice was soggy and bland. The kung pow chicken wasn't kung pao chicken: it was just some bland chicken and onions thing. The salt and pepper chicken was terrible. Way over cooked and the batter was terrible: just a hardened, salty shell. I'll be finding a new takeout place. I hope the old owners are enjoying retirement. read more

Absolutely LOVE this place! It's my go-to for Chinese food in San Leandro! Ever since I found Oriental Tea House sometimes "wanting", I had been on the search for a good quality Chinese restaurant. I tried this restaurant once back in 2014, and have been nothing but satisfied from that point forward; and since Oriental Tea House changed ownership, have never looked back/around! My personal favorite is the staple Chicken with Sweet Corn Soup. I'm always on the hunt for any place that has this in good order -- because there'll be other places that do too little chicken, too small of pieces or too big of chunks, too little egg, soup too thin/not-thick-enough, etc. This place just does it right! Nothing to look down on or complain about! I inhale a whole order, just by myself! On top of that is, of course, there's the Walnut Prawns Chef Special; which is just *chef's kiss*. That might be another expected staple, but you'd be surprised how other places can miss the mark. New Hong Kong Restaurant makes it that even though it's cooked, fried, and drenched, it's still properly crispy! It isn't soggy (very important and other places fall victim to this easily). It has the perfect amount of thickness from the mayo and sweetness of the honey! And it's not a small, mini shrimp; they are regular size to large. The dish that me and my family feel more than meets the mark is their House Chow Fun and/or the Dry Braised Beef Chow Fun. Those are on point! The noodles has such a great texture; nice and thick! The sauce isn't too overpowering. And the amount that is served is very sizeable! The Beef with Oyster Sauce is another one of my favorites and is frequently ordered. The beef is plentiful and tender, and the oyster sauce tastes good without being too overpowering or too thin/thick. The Dry Fried Spareribs are very appetizing and well worth it. Their Wor Won Ton Soup certainly matches the standards that make it such a staple at all Chinese restaurants. Their Sweet and Sour Pork, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Sesame Chicken, & Beef and Broccoli certainly don't sully their name and how they are deservedly the staples of American-Chinese cuisine -- New Hong Kong Restaurant's surely match up! I've only had the BBQ Pork Fried Rice, and there was no qualms whatsoever and find it whole fully acceptable. One awesome thing to add & note is just how much their portions are rather immense. The weight of their takeout would surprise you! And at the price that they charge for these dishes, it's an incredible wonder to grasp! The people that work there have always been nice, friendly, considerate, and enthusiastic. They are soft spoken and patient when paying (which says much because how much can you say that for other Chinese restaurants). They always pack the takeout orders with forethought and consideration, and even give a cardboard base to carry it on/in; always making sure to double bag the plastic to-go bags. This also speaks to their rather sizeable portions as they need to offer a cardboard base and double bagging to accommodate for it! There is little to no parking in front of the place (simply a small number of street parking spots). But there is supposedly a parking lot in the back/rear; you just have to walk all the way around half the whole strip mall complex. Because it resides in a small narrow strip mall on E. 14th in San Leandro, the place is naturally not too spacious to dine-in. The decor and ambiance is what you'd expect from a traditional Chinese restaurant. In the end, we've explored a great part of the menu, and everything we've ordered is of exceptional quality! I regret not writing a review on this place sooner. But since the Covid shelter in place, Its more important to support local businesses. They have placed up protective plastic barrier for the to go orders at the entrance. Hands down the best potstickers in town. Even with a to go order. Seasoned salt and pepper pork chops. Nice meaty and fatty portions. Rather enjoyed it was more meat than bones. Large slices of crunchy Bitter melon. I appreciate the fact that the veggies weren't soggy and it had a flavorful black bean sauce. Their bitter melon dish was very good. I rather they cut the broccoli a wee bit smaller in their veggie chow mein, but overall it was good. I came here for past 2 times to get to-go food. This restaurant is pretty close to my house, they have parking spots behind the building. I ordered through Yelp and pick up food. So it's super easy for me. I don't really wait too long to get my food ready for last 2 times. When ordering food, I gave them specific instruction that I want less salt and less oil. Tasty, solid Chinese food here. Had a big family dinner tonight and we got a wide array of dishes: special chow mein, potstickers, fried won tons, Mongolian chicken, sweet and sour pork, beef broccoli, house special fried rice, and eggplant with garlic sauce. The chow mein had a lot of veggies, meat, and large prawns. Good flavor, wasn't too greasy or oily, and the noodles had a good chew. Potstickers are really big and stuffed with meat. The special fried rice, like the chow mein, also had a lot of veggies (though less meat), and the sweet and sour pork had less breading than a lot of other places, letting the flavor of the pork come through more. Beef broccoli was nice, pretty standard dish of course but the broccoli was cooked well and the beef was tender. One of my favorite dishes of the night was the eggplant; the garlic sauce was rich and flavorful, and the eggplant wasn't overcooked or mushy. This was really delicious and I'd definitely order it again. The only dud of the night was the Mongolian chicken, and that was the consensus of everyone who tried it. Something just didn't taste right. Not that anything was spoiled or had gone bad, but whatever seasonings went into the Mongolian sauce just weren't great and the dish had an unpleasant flavor. The chicken itself was cooked well at least, but I wouldn't order this again. New Hong Kong is super generous with portions. Each of the takeout containers were absolutely stuffed, and despite nine people with large appetites eating we had substantial leftovers. It was our first time ordering from the New Hong Kong Restaurant and we really enjoyed our dinner. The food was flavorful, cooked and seasoned well, ingredients were fresh, and portions were generous for the price. We haven't ordered Cantonese food in a while, but it brought us back to some of our favorites. I was also happy that we could request no MSG. What we ordered (highlights): Spareribs with Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun: Noodles were fresh with good texture and a good amount of meat and veggies. The sauce was also tasty without being overly salty. Hubby loved it! Curry Chicken: My personal fave and something I was craving ever since it started feeling like fall in the Bay. The chicken, zucchini, carrots, and onions were tender and cooked nicely. Curry flavor wasn't overpowering and perfect served over steaming hot rice. The menu says that it's spicy, but it is only slightly, which was what I preferred. We also ordered the Singapore Rice Noodles, Vegetables Deluxe, and Sweet and Sour Chicken. All dishes were just as expected. The veggies were cooked al dente, so were crisp and bright to balance out our meal, but there was a lot of cabbage. This is my go to spot when ordering Chinese delivery when I'm too lazy to cook and don't want steam plate Chinese food. I've always been satisfied with all of the dishes I've ordered and always have leftovers. I love their Fi-Yu Wonton Soup, as the wonton is fried before putting it in the soup. It gives it some texture. I really like their lemon chicken as the sauce is separate so it doesn't get soggy. I've also had the beef with broccoli, honey walnut prawns and egg rolls. Even though the egg rolls are veggie only, I really enjoy them because they're always crispy even after being delivered. As far as Covid-19 protocols, orders can be made and are received at the door. The door has plexiglass partitions. The employee is wearing a mask and there is antibacterial gel at the door as well. I picked up on my last order but usually I get delivery. Wish I had not done that, it did not go well. It was so different from what I thought it would be that I called up about the "mistake". I thought it was something like sweet and un-sour chicken. But the restaurant insisted I got what I ordered. It was breaded, and I guess deep fried, and very sweet. In spite of all, I am still giving this place 4/5 stars, because I don't want to punish this excellent small business, a great asset to the neighborhood.
