I don't normally write reviews, but after a distressing and painful experience, I feel obligated to share what happened. I came in specifically for a consultation and service regarding sew-in wefts, wanting to switch to a thinner weft method. Instead of listening, Emily repeatedly insisted that I didn't have enough hair for extensions and pressured me to shave my head for a glued topper. (I have since consulted three other Bay Area extension specialists, and all three confirmed I have plenty of hair for thinner wefts.) When I refused to shave my head, she pushed a clip-in topper priced at $X,XXX, which I later discovered retails elsewhere for roughly $650. During that same visit, she cut my existing extensions far too short. We nonetheless placed an order for the new thinner wefts. On installation day, the newly ordered wefts arrived in completely the wrong color due to a lack of proper color swatches during our initial consultation. Most frustratingly, I explicitly requested from my very first booking that only Emily perform the work, as I was paying for senior-level expertise. Instead, she handed me off to an assistant to reinstall my old wefts, then acted as though waiving the reinstallation fee was a favor--even though the reinstallation was only necessary because of her initial color-matching mistake. Within 48 hours, the tension and pain from the assistant's installation became severe. Another salon had to perform an emergency removal, documenting visible scalp redness, tension, and inflammation (see attached photo). When I reached out to Emily regarding the severe pain and improper tension, there was zero concern for my scalp health or safety. Instead of checking the work, she responded with immediate hostility, condescension, and intimidation. Her direct text response: "Where are you at? I need to come and have a face-to-face conversation with you and this is not gonna go back-and-forth. Vxxxxx would not be on my schedule if she did not do good work. If she placed them too lightly, you would complain they're getting loose and falling out of your head and causing hair loss also if theres room to pull, do you understand me? It is not rocking science to learn how to do this on a doll head for six months straight. She does the same work I do. She does not want them to fall out of your head. Because then your issue would be a different issue they're falling out and you wanna come back and have them replaced. Unless you're gonna come in and have a face-to-face conversation, I do not expect to hear another text back from you. Thank you for your understanding. Lastly, I don't need to hear your rationalization about how long someone should be practicing one service in your eyes to be good at what they do. She's doing my work exactly as I've trained her to do for over six months on a doll head. The $3000 topper she sold me was shedding so profusely that there were hairs all over my entire house from this thing just shedding on its own everywhere. When I finally had it removed after 2 1/2 months Emily of course was out of town so her aid removed it and when she did so she removed most of my hair on top of my head. It was the most painful situation I've been through in a very long time. She was lying to me and telling me it was natural shedding that she was removing when in fact, I have no hair left on top of my head so now it is very difficult for me to go back to my clip in toppers because I have so little hair left. I have been working so hard for the last two years to get my hair to grow back and it was doing so much better. Emily promised me that the solution to remove the glue was easy Peezy and would come right off NOT damage my own hair. It was excruciating. I was the first client of the morning, so I looked in the garbage can and saw the piles of my hair in there so I know how much came out. Things for you to think about before you EVER agree to have anything glued to your head by Emily. The cost of this piece is really expensive as I've priced it out with other pieces so her prices are high. The quality of her pieces are subpar as they literally shed all the time. And the itching is unbearable. No matter how often you wash it. She told me I should just shave my head to make it easier? WTF? She also doesn't mention that you will need to come back every six weeks to have this taken off and reapplied and that's $450 a visit. She also doesn't give you full instructions on how to care for it, how to wash it properly. She will tell you in a hurry while she's doing 3 other things... oh by the way, go to YouTube look at my videos! I told her in person that wasn't adequate, she needed to have more information available on how to care for these. The removal is brutal! Her commercial grade glue does not come off easily and they literally just pull your hair out! My scalp was so damaged! I don't believe the technique she used to install is appropriate for my hair type bc I was left with two bald spots and tons of little hairs with bulbs attached to the sew-in, that have been pulled out by the heaviness of the weft. I was interested in a halo extension, which is the most gentle solution for a fragile scalp and follicles. I started losing hair a month ago. I tried a new shampoo to put some volume in my hair. My head started to itch like crazy and my hair started falling out. I tried different shampoos and anti itch medicine. I went to my primary doctor and she gave me a topical steroid to apply to a bald spot that's getting bigger, referred me to a dermatologist who I can't get an appointment with til May. That's about 2 and a half months wait. I will be bald by then. I'm losing so much hair, I' afraid of touching it. My hair has gotten so thin that I'm starting to look like Gollum. I needed a wig to hide my bald spot and thinning scalp til I can actually get treatment. Then came Emily, I came upon her when I did an alopecia treatment search. What she said made sense. This review is long, long, long overdue. So let me start with the short version: GO SEE EMILY. If you are reading this, don't even hesitate. Emily is the absolute BEST at her craft, particularly if you are looking for a hairstylist who actually understands what it means to service someone struggling with any sort of hair issue. She is NOT your average stylist--she goes above and beyond and actually has the knowledge, tools and creativity to help you look and feel your absolute best. Now here's the long version: I found Emily and Bond Hair Bar back in March--desperate for something to help me manage my trichtillomania. My issue has never been pulling out my hair from the follicle, but rather breaking off ends so badly that it resulted in severe, severe breakage on the crown of my head. I'm talking mullet-type breakage. At one point, it got so unmanageable that even after getting extensions in at another salon (before finding Emily), I broke the hair off the top of my head so badly that I was legitimately afraid I would no longer be able to hide my extension wefts. That's when I went searching for a solution and discovered Emily. I called her and had a wonderful 30 min conversation with her over the phone about my issues and needs. I was interested in her hair toppers, so she suggested I come in for a consultation. Within a few days, I was in Emily's chair being matched for a clip-in topper for the crown of my head. Within a week, I was back to pick up my perfectly color-matched topper (which even had a root melt to make it look super natural!). Curly hair girls, go somewhere else! Based on all the good reviews, I really wanted to like this place. When I went in, I got a haircut + deep condition treatment + hair extension consultation. When my hair was getting washed, the other employees kept telling my stylist that someone else needed the washing station so she rushed. My entire back got wet in the process and after, she didn't clean the station up very well (Covid concern). The deep conditioning treatment made my hair feel great but my haircut wasn't awesome. It was one of the fastest cuts I've ever had, which was shocking when it costs $125. She also really tried to push me to buy her products. I felt really uncomfortable when she put some of her product in my hair and then walked me around the salon to show her employees how to style curly hair. Finally, the extension consultation was not worth $75. She didn't really have extensions available for my texture hair and quoted me $1800 for tape-in extensions. Oh, and she also removed her mask during this time. Upon check-out, she accidentally double-charged me and then pushed me again to buy her product. "It's only $30!" It came off very sassy and a bit demeaning so I gave in, and just bought it. I came here for a "treat yourself" kinda day but really just felt stressed out the entire time. For $300+ I wouldn't recommend this (especially) to curly haired girls. read more
