If I could leave zero stars I would. My gay cousin has been turned away TWICE now. Both times for being "too drunk" meanwhile I asked this time to speak to someone in charge, the GM who would not share his name, to whom we had at least an 8 minute conversation where my cousin (who is an ADA) was coherent and genuinely concerned/confused why he was refused in his hot pink pant onesie. Strange as this bar used to be for allies. We were in the Barbie bar crawl and this stop completely ruined our experience. I will implore the bar crawls of SA to avoid this establishment at all costs as I believe their responses were that of bigots and completely unwarranted. I will NEVER enter this establishment and will use every means possible to expose the injustice breeding in this business. DISGUSTING is about the only word I can think of to describe this place. Honestly the DJ was awesome and the atmosphere is great! But.... Staff isn't friendly to people who are from out of state. I also think if we, our group, were a different race or ethnicity we would have been treated better. We actually got kicked out because they claim a minor was in possession of alcohol. Our 20 year old friend hold an empty cup of alcohol for another friend for about 5 seconds and gave it back. She never drank anything. According to the security supervisor holding an empty cup of alcohol is illegal. That I understand. They could have giving us a warning, but instead they just kicked us out and band us. We were not aggressive or combatants. It ruin a great night. I do not recommend this place to people who are not local or a certain prefer race. read more

When I was a teenager, in high school, I would come here and dance my butt off so hard that I would leave completely drenched from sweat. I was always let in with no cover (probably because the door guy/lady knew i was there just to dance and not to drink). However, times have changed and now, as a minor (as in under 21 yrs old), you will have to pay a cover charge that ranges from $5-$25 depending on the night. This is only because as a minor you will not be contributing to the 10-15 bartenders staffed here at night that rely on tips for their living wage. Here's the breakdown on The Bonham - this is a LGBT bar that is friendly to allies and straight folks who like to dance, get down, drink, and mingle. There are male dancers who dance on Friday & Saturday nights beginning at 9pm on the stages all around this cool and very old building. There will be no cover charge if you are over 21 and there will be a brisk 'pat down' before you walk in. This is only because, in the past, there have been some incidents of people fighting and/or sneaking in liquor or flasks. Just be cool with the staff and let them do their thing. You do your thing and be cool about it all. Everyone has to go through it. Here are a few tips I recommend you do and or think about before you come on out: 1. BRING CASH - its so loud due to the music and the bass so it will be hard to try to dictate what drinks goes on what tab. Drinks are cheap so the more $5-$10 bills you can bring the better. 2. LEAVE YOUR PHONE in a secure pocket and don't bring in a purse that you can't zip up or wear across your chest (messenger style) - there can be guys who come up to you and/or ladies that will try to reach for things and money and phones in your purse. 3. Three main rooms to dance in, one being a dance/eletronica pit, the first to your left a music video room with the current faves on the radio and male dancers, and the upstairs hiphop and rap. $3 wells and free to adults before 10pm and during specials events they make the cover for minors $20 or so while adults are $5. Thank the lord! Guidos, juiceheads, and short hemmed harlots occasionally come and have their sad "we're a group and party hard-y" moments, along with an occasional fight-cat or otherwise. But the sane out number those kind of idiots. I will always come back! Good ole Bonham. My old stomping ground from my early 20's. I spent a lot of time drinking, dancing and hanging out with friends there. A few friends wanted to go and relive our youth and it was still the same. Still huge, clean and well stocked. They introduced me to a new shot...thank you little baby Jesus in a gold diaper....Jameson shot with a pickle juice chaser, a Pickle Back if you will. I have had more of these in the last few months and I always have the set up in my fridge/freezer. Try one, do it. Try the food outside, it smells amazing. We were looking for a gay bar close to us, as we were leaving Hemisfair park. We walked over, there was a line and a pat down before entering. After entering, we noticed that it was a mixed crowd, gay and straight, but very young. The vibe of the front was not our taste. We grabbed a drink (very cheap), and headed toward the back. There was a dance floor playing electronic dance music and stages with shirtless straight? guys dancing on them. Idk, one got off and danced with and kissed a girl. We left pretty soon after. We had an overall fantastic experience from the people who worked there. Great bartenders great food in the patio. But the DJ's felt like I was listening to a high school illegal house party from 2014. If the DJ's would be set to a certain genre for the whole night and played the same genre of music all night it would be a better experience in my opinion. The DJ's play a different genre with each song they play which doesn't keep a crowd alive. More than half the people who are o the dance floor are just standing confused trying to find the rhythm for a new song and change it up for the next. I got caught saying, "This venue is REALLY nice" probably more than a couple times throughout the night. My group and I arrived before the rush. So when we first entered, I was a little weary that I would even enjoy this place. We basically had the whole dance floors to ourselves. I was out of town, I would probably never see any of these people ever again, so we took to the dance floor and enjoyed it. As more and more people started to fill in, we could see this place was going to be poppin'. That's when my friends told me there were other rooms. So of course, we went to explore. Downstairs was techno mixed with hip hop . And the third floor was hip hop . I really didn't spend that much time on the second floor . But definitely great space to party . I've only been here on Sundays for the drag shows and they never disappoint. The queens kill it with their sexy dance moves and spectacular outfits. Who doesn't love sequins and big lashes? Every time I go there's 3 or 4 groups of minors standing around with attitude not tipping or having a good time. I guess they're upset because this place is super strict on not serving to minors. This club has a great vibe and the DJs are on point. I had an awesome time last night. I would give this joint 5 stars, one of the bar staff brought the vibe down. I heard a bartender (The one with the Harley Quinn pigtails) accuse a customer of not tipping. Actually got very rude with the customer. I like to tip, but when did it become a thing for the bartender to cuss out the customer for not. Oh, I saw the lady tip also. The other bartenders were really cool. My friend and I went to this club and we went to the restroom (they weren't labeled) at least from what we saw, but this bouncer came up to us immediately as we entered the restroom and started harassing us telling us a 'woman' can't be in the restroom I went ahead and explained to him that I thought this was a 'gay' club and the I thought the restrooms were gender neutral and he started arguing with me, trying to fight me in the club! People even got involved because of how much of big deal he was making it was extremely embarrassing and insulting. I even told the man that I was not trying to argue with him but he proceeded to try to fight me even told me to 'shut up and get out of here' he followed me all the way down and I went to speak to a 'manager' who was no help at all. Very upsetting that this club does not care about the LGBT community. The only care about taking your money. Please take your business elsewhere. read more

fun atmosphere, but whoever decided to put a bar in a two story building with random stairs in poorly lit hallways needs to rethink things. i sprained my right ankle and left knee on my way to buy my first drink, and as prior reviews note, the dj will refuse to play pitbull. Also within 5 minutes of arriving, a strange man was asking if he could pull my hair because i had my hair in "piggy tails, and you know what that means here"... The staff were nice aside from the dj, but for my own personal safety and well-being I will not be returning. Do you know why I moved to San Antonio? Aside from a glamorous job with mucho dinero (sarcasm meter), it was because SA is laid back, fun and nowhere near as pretentious as Houston (born and raised). Bonham Exchange truly reminds me why I love this city. Clientele: It's a good mix. Tourists coming from the River Walk and natives who come to get their dance on. It's part-gay bar, part-night club. And everyone just does their own thing. There are minors here, there are older folk here. But it's all good - that's the best part! I never encounter any d-bags or Jersey Shore wannabes. Casual but nice dress. Location: It's on the north end of downtown, just far enough away from the River Walk clusterfuck, but close enough for all of your visiting friends and family. It's also far enough away from downtown that you can find sufficient free street parking in the blocks to the north. Cover: $5 21+ // minors pay $25. Drinks: $1 DRINKS! So. Much. Win. Venue: There are SO many different rooms and dance floors - upstairs, downstairs, a music video room, a pool table room, side rooms, etc. You can still dance your ass off but then go somewhere quieter to talk... get freaky... whatever. There is so much history to this building, I can't even begin to explain. Bathrooms: Acceptable. Two elevated dance platforms on the main floor for standouts...spectators on the outer rim get to check out the crowd from above and the sides... Upstairs Balcony: Rap/CaliSwag/Dougie. Small bar...wooden highschool gymfloor like appearance. You remember the auditorium in elementary school right?? something of that nature...still great beats tho.. Patio: Reggae - Totally the back yard BBQ feel with Full Service Bar. Just wish it wasn't so cold that night to stay outside longer. Place got a little too crowded about midnite...by crowded I mean, no longer danceable...I'm used to a comfy 2-3 ft bubble to work in..We left. the line for the place trying to come in stretched out a couple blocks it seemed when we were leaving. The bonham is supposed to be a mixed club. I used to go with my gay roommate and we both would have a blast! Tv room has sexy stripper men. Upstairs looks like a high school gym with thug like straight people. Downstairs dance floor is banging music and be prepared to burn some calories. Oh! The Bonham is a half mile walk from my loft downtown- so I fear for the safety of my liver. Why? Because the best part of the Bonham is the drinks ARE CHEAP. I'm used to Austin prices and I can get comfortably numb at the Bonham for a reasonable rate. Get it, girl! There are multiple dance floors and levels for you to enjoy at the Bonham. Me and my girls went upstairs for an awesome hip hop party where I learned a new song in which the main word is f*ck. Cool by me! The video bar/dance floor is really cool. I mean yes- there was a guy rolling on exstacy who was trying to "channel" the power from the TVs and throw me his "light orb". This just comes with the territory of being a gay club party girl. The music was insanely good- none of that queer as folk crap with no words. And people came to throw down. The biggest group of people were down on the bottom floor, but it was too damn hot. I was sweating like a me in church, so I avoided it. As others have mentioned, there's a lot of straight people, so ladies- you'll have a good time. I hate the cover charge ($5 for over 21), but I'll pay it for decent music. Bonham is a VERY friendly and OPEN LGBT bar/club scene, so if you're a horrible human being and can't deal with that, please do us all a favor and just go to Kremlin. Thanks. This place has 3 floors, lovely DJs, pool table, strippers (I think only one and only males.. not really sure). It's friendly for Under 21s too, I think it's $15-$20 cover charge for 18-20's. You will get patted down (men), and women they will request to look in your bags. If you can't deal with that, then go elsewhere. One thing I will say is, BRING MONEY IF YOU NEED TO. The food upstairs ONLY TAKES CASH, and the ATM machine charges you $5.00. Yep, that's the price of A BEER, to remove any amount of money. The DJs were pretty on par with what I heard; but I didn't dance a whole lot. We came here to chill outside and eat upstairs on the 3rd floor after a few drinks and a dance. I never once felt "threatened" by any gender to be humped on by anyone, unlike at Kremlin where I need to dance against a wall to avoid being harassed. Everyone I met here was pretty friendly too. I went here on my birthday because my friends wanted to dance. We left Pat O's Piano bar to go here and I seriously regretted it. When we went the place was still getting pretty crowded. We got drinks and walked around a little bit. The drinks are cheap but really you can;t taste much of the alcohol in it. I like the idea of having so many areas to go and dance but the music is not good. Every time a good song came on you didn't hear much of it before the next one was playing. When we came in - there was not a line - but everyone had to show ID and had to get frisked. Interesting. On the way out - there was a HUGE line of folks waiting to get in. Wow. Upon arriving, I saw a fat chick in skin-tight clothing trying to pole dance outside...it was nasty I'm sorry. Anyways, the structure of the place is cool since it has different rooms and stuff. The age group here was definitely mostly 25+ looking, not a place I'd recommend for college students. As for the music, I couldn't stand it. I couldn't seem to find the room where it played house/techno/trance. I went and asked the bartender, and he told me he thought it was upstairs. So very wrong. I took it that it was in the biggest room, so we migrated there for the night. It sucked. The male dancers can really dance though, so props to them. What I really liked was that every guy that approached me asked me to dance and didn't just try to grab me. Won't be back again unless I unexpectedly make a friend who loves this place. read more

THIS PLACE IS SO MUCH FUN. With a line reaching almost around the block, this place was popping. We ubered here after visiting a certain roof top bar. Everybody wanted to go dancing and Bonham was our choice! We did wait about 10 minutes to get in, but you don't really notice it if you're with friends. The venue is amazing. I don't know the history, but it looks like the Bonham Exchange is a historical building. It seemed pretty, but I was too tipsy to really remember the details. With the Bonham you get multi story fun with different DJ's playing different things. Tired of one song? Just walk a floor up, or go a floor down! Or go the room across the hallway! My favorite was when we descended to the basement level into a two-story dance area - the first where we all danced, and the second was more of place of viewing. Military gets in free which is nice but even if you don't get in free it's a very cheap cover of $5. You can get extremely hammered here with little judgement. Went with a couple friends on a Friday night to unwind and had a great time. This place is friendly for everyone regardless of your sexual orientation. There is plenty of space - three rooms on the main floor, one room upstairs, and a pretty big open space outside. Dance floors: two main rooms that have a variety of music from top 40's to some techno/80's. I'm sure you'll find a room with music you'll find fun. There is always plenty of dance space (upstairs, downstairs, on boxes) as well as seating areas for when you've danced your feet off. My friends and I hanged out with the bartender Jeremey outside in the courtyard area, and that was pretty fun - everyone there had a good sense of humor and were very nice.
