I ate here almost daily during my pregnancy because I was always craving something "clean" and their california rolls were my sustenance for 3 months. The service is always friendly and welcoming even though we only do take out. Love the ease of ordering online, great menu and choices. Delicious food always. We did have to cut back on our sushi nights when prices went up but I can't say I've had sushi this good elsewhere. My favorite is shrimp tempura and a MUST TRY is the chicken tempura. 8.15.22 I used to really like and enjoy the food here. I used to frequent this place at least twice a week if not more, for close to a couple of years now. I used to get their spicy tuna rolls and the spicy salmon rolls most often. One of my favorites used to be the Spicy Maki Combo. It consists of a spicy tuna roll, a spicy salmon roll, and a spicy yellowtail roll. This was so good and filling. They used to be very consistent for the longest time but that had changed early this year. It didn't matter when I ordered, which day i ordered, or what time of day i ordered, the food was always the same,very good. The spicy salmon rolls and spicy tuna rolls had started to become a little different every other time i picked them up. Too many times they were actually very hot and not spicy. There is a difference. For my orders anyways they started being 50/50. One time great while the other not good and I would end up throwing food away. Not good. I asked and mentioned to them a couple of times about how different the rolls were. It didn't seem to bother them each time I mentioned it. One of them would say something to the other (not in English) them they would say ok, sorry and that's it. They never offered to remake any of my orders nor any discounts. I invite you to try a solid and innovative take-out sushi restaurant. I stress the word take-out since the actual restaurant is very small and the atmosphere is lacking and simple. However if your focus is food only then there are a few booths to enjoy quality eat in sushi. My experience only reflects take out sushi. The menu is very extensive and the sushi is fresh and wonderfully prepared. The sushi is also reasonably priced, especially on their special rolls, when compared to other local sushi restaurants. We sampled a great selection of traditional roles stretching into their specialty rolls. My two recommendations are the IBM Roll, which was unique and flavorful. To my surprise a non fish roll pops into the mix, the Sweet Potato Tempura Roll. This roll was filling and offered a refreshing break from the many fish rolls we ordered. Our go-to sushi take out place. Always fresh. You can order online or over the phone, I always do pick up. Never had a bad roll. Our favorites are the Midnight sun, Memories of Japan, Godzilla, Sunset Boulevard, Spider Roll and IBM. Kani Su roll is very light and refreshing. The 4 seasons app is yummy. Can't go wrong with gyoza, seaweed salad or kani salad. They don't always label- so sometimes it can be confusing to distribute among friends. If you're ordering for multiple people, I recommend specifying which rolls you want packed together- otherwise, they randomly assemble the containers and your stuff will definitely get mixed with your other diners. I always call my order in, expect them to take a little longer than they quote. It's worth the wait. read more

I am biased because I don't care for teriyaki, but I do think offering more flavors for customers is important. The rolls were pretty decent sized. Kani Salad was well flavored. I love all 3 Bonsai restaurants in NY, all along Route 9 in the Hudson Valley. Among those three, the food is always consistent, excellent, and filling. We expected the same from CT's Bonsai (still confusingly called Bonsai III on the outside, even though Bonsai III is near Wappingers). Instead, the restaurant was silent and strange; the waitress was confused and cold, and the rolls were extremely small. As far as sushi goes, it wasn't terrible; everything was fresh and tasted good, but the weird feeling we got from the service, and the fact that this branch doesn't hold a candle to the ones in NY, left me a bit disappointed. Everyone else I was with seemed okay with it, but they seriously missed out on the experience that the other Bonsais have to offer. read more

Do not judge the book by its cover. I've never ordered from this place because of the appearance from the outside. The outside does not do it justice. This has been the best sushi I've had. Noticeably good. The size is one thing I wasn't impressed with. I wish they were a bit bigger. You'll see what I mean. I do hope that this will change should others post and notice the same thing. I LOVE Bonsai...it is the better of the 2 sushi places in town. The place is small, but nicely decorated, clean, and typically when we go there are a few tables filled with other patrons. I get to go a lot and it is packed with every item necessary. A+++ It is ALWAYS consistent...fresh....creative. The bento box is a great deal... lunch or dinner. My go to is BBQ ika, it's perfectly lightly charred with just the right sauce. Any roll is fresh and prepared perfectly. I have tried several and they are all good! Pepper tuna, yum... Gyoza, yum... Nice to finally have a decent Japanese/sushi/sashimi option in the area. It's easy to miss this unassuming restaurant tucked in a strip mall at the corner of Farmington Ave. and Colkins Rd. The ambiance is quiet and peaceful. It's hard to find both quality and value in Japanese cuisine, but Bonsai achieves both: we had lunch for $37.47 for two (pre-gratuity). The tempura is authentic and light, but flavorful. The miso soup is solid. The bento boxes are an excellent value, ranging from $7.95 to $12.95. We had the sashimi bento, and the fish was fresh (if perhaps a tad too thickly sliced); you get a total of five compartments, including excellent California roll and shumai (although the latter clearly is not Japanese fare). The only limitations are that omakase is not an option (the waitress laughed when I asked about this) and shiso leaf was not served with the sashimi. Very overpriced for the quality. Baked Lobster Roll: True to its name, it had baked lobster... singular. There were maybe 2 or 3 at most; the roll was primarily topped with imitation crab and a couple pieces of baked scallop (which was supposed to be on the inside of every piece) as a smokescreen. The banana was also overpowering and made the entire roll taste extremely sweet. Trio Roll: Was supposed to have tobiko, but as you can see from my photos it was stingily mixed in with the rice. Been wanting to try a new sushi place that was somewhat closer. Since it averaged 4 stars on yelp, we decided on Bonsai for lunch. We almost drove past it - it's located in a tiny strip mall? There is a handful of parking spaces out front. The restaurant seems to be well kept and clean. We ended up with soup, house salad, sashimi, and a few rolls. The menu didn't really boast anything different or special - more of the same (in-line with similar type restaurants around this area of CT). Our meal wasn't bad .... mediocre comes to mind. Bonsai might be new to Bristol, but it is already far and away the best sushi spot in town. Everything I've ordered there in my two visits have been pretty good, and I will most certainly be back many more times in the future! My last time out, I tried a couple flavors of Shirakiku a brand of Japanese soda. What makes it stand out from normal soda is the way you open it - there is a small marble blocking the top of the bottle that you need to plunge down with a small piece of plastic that comes attached to the bottle cap. I'm not quite sure what it actually does to the soda, but it's a cool gimmick and the flavors I had (strawberry and orange) were actually pretty good. I'm personally a huge fan of pan fried dumplings, and Bonsai doesn't disappoint there, especially with the dipping sauce that accompanies them. I opted to go with the bento dinner box, which includes a teriyaki roll, California roll, miso soup, salad, and the choice of two options from a list of about 15 different rolls and sides. I went with the dumplings (of course) and a sweet potato tempura roll. All of that only cost about $16 which is a great value! Along with that dinner special, Bonsai also has happy hour and lunch specials, all at great prices. Overall, if you're in the mood for sushi, look no further than Bonsai in Bristol! read more

This has become my favorite sushi place! Although the outside might be misleading with the small building and empty parking lot, once inside you will see how inviting and welcoming bonsai is. My usual is the shrimp shumai, crunchy shrimp roll and Philadelphia roll. The sushi always tastes fresh and beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend this place if you are a sushi fan. Two words come to mind when I think about Bonsai- HAPPY HOUR! For superbly discounted sushi, go from 11am-4 pm Monday-Saturday. The restaurant looks iffy on the outside, but when you walk in, you can see the owners paid a lot of attention to the details. Royal purple walls, gorgeous floors, ambient lighting and worldly decor make this easily passable spot on busy route 6 extra special. Bristol tends to love chain places, so to have a place that feels like a chic, hip, small business is quite refreshing. The staff is friendly and professional and the chef is absolutely phenomenal at rolling sushi. After I place my order of 2 rolls for $8.95 and a side of edamame (comes out to approximately $12 after tax), I go sit at the bar so I can watch my roll being made. I watch not to make sure they're doing it right, but because it's just really fun to watch! They are always so accommodating for me, especially when I request them to cut the pieces into half the size they typically do (fits way better in my 10 year old's mouth that way). The fish is always cold and fresh- never slimy, warm, or overpowering. The rolls are always tight and don't fall apart when you dip them into soy sauce. The bar has a variety of domestic and Japanese beers. I've yet to try anything alcoholic there, but have been wanting to go there some time soon for that. The happy hour menu is more extensive than most restaurants'. However, their full menu has some absolutely delectable options. The Naruto Roll (contains no rice) is my favorite regular menu item, with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, crab meat, asago, and wrapped with cucumber. I always get warm steamed edamame, no matter the time of day. It is perfectly made and great with a touch of sea salt. No matter the time of day, the prices are great. Whether you eat inside or get your food to go, it tastes equally good. Bonsai makes for a cute date night place, and you'll definitely impress your work buddies when they ask for a good quick bite. I recommend this place way too often; I probably sound like a broken record to my friends, coworkers, family and even random strangers. Four of us went try this newly opened restaurant and were really pleased. The place is very cute inside with black and purple decor. We All ordered sushi and the chefs seem enthusiastic about their creations. They even took pictures before sending out my friend's plated spider roll they were so proud. They serve mostly beer and wine with a limited liquor selections so don't expect a scorpion bowl. Happy hour is not what it says on their website so beware. This place was surprisingly great! I had never been and had never heard of them so when it came up as the first place when searching for take out I was a bit apprehensive. It's one thing to go try the place and sit down (especially necessary when wanting sushi) but I read reviews and for the most part, they all seemed 4 star or above.
