She is very passionate about the menu and is very attentive to everyone. Thankfully, as our food was served she was there to explain that the best way to experience the chef's creation is to eat it as it presented (without soy sauce) first. She went on to explain that each dish is created with specific textures and flavors in mind to create an intentional balanced bite. She is absolutely correct and I am so glad we listened. In fact, after trying the "second" bite with soy sauce, we recognized that it was much better without it. The soy sauce is homemade and delicious but the sushi is so perfectly executed, it really does not need anything at all to shine. This is not your average sushi joint. We've been hearing great things about Gohan Sushi for a while now, and I'm so happy we finally made the visit! We were lucky to snag a table for two and know to make reservations next time. The menu is primarily sushi, and I gravitated towards some of their unique speciality rolls, like the heaven roll with tempura banana and shrimp (which worked surprisingly well), and the flame touch roll with steak. The chicken katsu was delicious too! My husband loves Dragon Ball, so we loved seeing the references on the menu. Very attentive service from our waitress and the owner. Despite countless friends, particularly the foodies, raving about Gohan, my countless trips to the plaza for other reasons, and my love of sushi, I for some reason had never been until yesterday. The long anticipation and acclaim made for extremely high expectations, and I have to say they were met! It was pretty incredible sushi. Everyone there was super friendly and welcoming. The space is small, but tables are arranged nicely to maximize space as best they can. The servers were happy to give suggestions and asked what types of things I usually enjoyed. I had also been told by friends that the special rolls were a must. I over ordered to have leftovers, so I went with one of the special rolls my server recommended which was the sashimi roll, then the heaven roll, a yellowtail-scallion roll, and a sweet potato roll. Execution and technical skill was top tier. I was really impressed. Even the small details, knife cuts, ingredient ratios and proportions. Careful thought was clearly put into each roll. The special rolls were brilliantly conceived. The heaven roll was my favorite, and had avocado, and tempura shrimp and banana. Then the sashimi roll was rice-less, and had spicy crunchy yellowtail-tuna-salmon and mango inside, and then more raw tuna & salmon, avocado and thinly sliced lemon on top. It was served with a chili sauce intended for dipping. I was asked to try the special rolls as intended first. It was perfect as is! They have homemade soy sauce even, but I only used a little bit with the sweet potato and yellowtail rolls. Hardly needed. Excellent ginger and wasabi too, and plating was of course done with care as well. It was a great experience overall. Prices were great, especially for the quality. Very average even though nothing else about the experience was. If totally understand why Gohan is so beloved, and I am happy to report I now love it too. I've seen the accolades... Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in 2025. I've seen it all over IG. I had to try it of course. It's located in a plaza and it's a small, cozy spot; there were about 7 tables. I don't think they accept reservations. We went on Saturday for dinner, there were a group of about 15 to 20 and then my family. I was glad we were able to get a table for 4! The service was great! Food came out fast too. My kids had the chicken katsu with fries which they enjoyed. My husband had the sashimi platter and Philly roll, which he said was fresh and tasty. I ordered 3 sushi rolls: Dragon Roll- it had crispy tempura shrimp, avocado wrapped in sushi rice and nori seaweed; it was topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds. Shrimp Tempura Roll- which had Tempura Shrimp, Avocado, Cucumber, Tobiko, and Homemade Eel Sauce Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll- fresh minced tuna, seaweed, rice, and I believe popped rice to make it crunchy Honestly, all delicious. Very good sushi, worth the trek. Came here because of the top 100 list entry. Plaza is very unassuming, in the middle of a shopping district. When we came, the restaurant was 15 minutes from closing. They take an hour for lunch every day, and shut down fully. They let us order to go though, so we put in our order rapidly and waited in the car. Food came out quickly, took some pics and dug in. The sushi was top notch, even if they were all to-go. The tuna was treated well, fresh and seasoned lightly. The wasabi was fresh and the ginger was punchy. The flaming torch roll was beefy and toasty, the dark angel roll was tangy, creamy and spicy. The only issue was the spicy tuna was a little mushy with little texture difference. We would've loved actually dining in and getting the full experience, but if this is the quality one gets when they are closing up just shows their commitment to their craft. First off, to anyone that says "all sushi spots are the same" this place will prove you wrong. The standards for the quality of fish here are high and you can taste the difference. I mean just look how vibrant that salmon is. They're known for their sushi rolls and Paradise cake, Crazy Tuna roll and Tiger roll are only some of the rolls I've had but they were all amazing. The seamless blend of flavors, from the addition of citrus to their rolls to the unique sauces, you can tell a lot of care has been put into the design of each roll. I would come back just for the paradise cake though, insane blend of crunchy and soft textures. I'll admit I was a little doubtful because the same sounded gimmicky but boy was I wrong. Truly savored every bite and didn't want it to end . Service is amazing as always, super friendly and inviting. Having such a small seating area means the restaurant has kind of a homey feel, yet the food and presentation really takes you to flavor-town. Gohan came highly recommended by many of my foodie friends. Since I'm a big fan of sushi, I had to check them out for myself. They are located in a shopping plaza with other food options and stores, Gohan can be easily missed--a gem hidden in plain sight, if you will. We were instantly greeted when we walked in and seated. I personal got the Snow White Roll listed on their Chef's Signature Rolls. My husband who isn't a fan of sushi got a Steak Fried Rice lunch that came with salad. The rest of the table got 3 roll lunch; Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, Paradise Cake Roll, and Spicy Salmon Bowl. Our dishes were prepared swiftly and arrived at the same time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I really enjoyed my Snow White Roll with its many layers of flavors. It was a little sweet and a little spicy, the perfect balance. It has coconut shrimp, spicy tuna, mango, and topped with seared chili white tuna, avocado, jalapeño, and flakes of coconut. It was delicious! I also tried the Paradise Cake Roll (another Chef's Signature Roll), that was uniquely layered with spicy salmon, regular salmon, avocado, eel, marinated Ikura, and citrus mayo. The flavors melted together and loved that neither of the ingredients over powered one another. The Signature Rolls are definitely where I think Gohan shines, I wish I could had tried more. Recently found this hidden gem Gohan Japanese Cuisine located in Southington, CT. I can't say enough about this place, I truly had a great experience, & I will be back again. The establishment is super cute. The space isn't huge but it has a few tables available. Any questions we had were answered, we got great recommendations based on our likes and needs (were quickly told which rolls were spicy, gluten free, and which others were not GF but could be made GF, and which always contain gluten). Everything was super fresh and the presentation was incredible. The space is small so there aren't a lot of tables, but hopefully you'll be lucky enough to snag one. We got there early (maybe 5-5:30 on a weeknight) and were the only table, but during our meal the restaurant filled up and it was great to see the regulars that knew exactly what they wanted and the new folks that heard about this spot and needed time checking out the menu and talking to the owner to decide which items to order. In her Yelp review, my friend Christina M, encouraged people to "run, don't walk" to 5 Star Yelp-rated Gohan Sushi. I am guilty of not running to Gohan after seeing Christina's review. Moreover, I walked very slowly, and my path was circuitous. It was my loss. Gohan is terrific. Although Gohan has a small, unassuming dining area (maybe 6 or so tables), the amazing service makes you feel like you're in a friend's home. Our server (who I think may have been an owner) remembered every group who had ever been there before and greeted them enthusiastically. One group drove from Massachusetts. Another from Simsbury. Just to visit Gohan. Can you imagine all the closer sushi options they passed over? Our server took time to understand what we like and then tailored recommendations to our tastes. This led to my wife and I splitting three specialty rolls and a Spicy Tuna with avocado roll, and our family also shared a shrimp app, spring rolls and a Salad with carrot dressing. I often think the specialty rolls at most CT places are fairly similar. That is not the case at Gohan. Our tiger roll was filled with spicy salmon, mango and avocado, and topped with Aburi Salmon and edible sweetened lemon pieces. Beautiful and delicious. The Flame Touch Roll was filled with spicy crunchy tuna and tempura asparagus, and topped with flame torched steak, jalapeño and red onion. Surf and turf in a roll. It looked and tasted like nothing else I've ever seen. Delicious. The other rolls were very good too. The rolls bursted with colors, tastes and shapes. Awesome work. The Apps and Salad were also good. The salad vegetables tasted very fresh and the carrot dressing was a step or two up from most. The spring rolls had good flavor and texture and the sweet dipping sauce was delicious. Gohan Sushi is one of my fav CT Food Discoveries in recent years. Let me introduce you to the Yelpie food chain. I learned about Gohan through Fellow Yelper Jason P who learned about it through Yelper Christina M. Since then we've seen more and more of our fellow friends in the community try Gohan and love it. I consistently am thinking about their sushi and when I can make the trip over to get it next. Every time I've been here I'm absolutely not disappointed. Between friendly staff who care and remember their customers to of course the great sushi. High quality always and uniquely made. My favorite is the sashimi roll which I've gotten every time. There's a special sauce made that pairs perfectly with the roll to dip instead of soy sauce. I also love the paradise cake because of all the different flavors and fishes packed in the roll. Tiger roll is light and citrusy with one of my favorite fish, salmon. I haven't had a bad choice yet! Other chef signature rolls I really enjoyed include the flame touch as the buttery ribeye steak is put atop the fishes in the roll. The montage mountain is a nice crunch and a more cooked roll than the rest. The toro lovers roll is a tuna fan's dream. I stumbled upon Gohan and decided to give it a try simply based on the photos of the interior being aesthetic, modern, and clean. We settled on the layer cake roll, the flame torched roll, and the spicy crunchy yellowtail roll. They were incredibly fresh and delicious. All were full of flavor, yet mild - in a good way! Each roll was visually appealing as well. The food was on par with high end sushi that l've had and the prices were good. Now that we've finally tried Gohan, I anticipate it being our new regular sushi spot. There's a lot on the menu, and I can't wait to try it!! I could not kick my sushi craving, so a fellow Yelp elite and I decided to come back. Boyyyyyy, was it yummy! The owner was super sweet and so informative, it really made for a personable experience! We got a bunch of things including the lunch special three rolls of shrimp tempura roll, yellowtail scallion roll and spicy tuna roll with a salad...YUM! My daughter got the shrimp, fried rice, and the fried rock shrimp... she ate every bit and said it was the best fried rice she's ever had! My friend and I ordered two specialty rolls and the octopus appetizer...YUMMO! We finished our meal with the Ube ice cream... so creamy and delicious!
