I've seen the accolades... Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in 2025. I've seen it all over IG. I had to try it of course. It's located in a plaza and it's a small, cozy spot; there were about 7 tables. I don't think they accept reservations. We went on Saturday for dinner, there were a group of about 15 to 20 and then my family. I was glad we were able to get a table for 4! The service was great! Food came out fast too. My kids had the chicken katsu with fries which they enjoyed. My husband had the sashimi platter and Philly roll, which he said was fresh and tasty. I ordered 3 sushi rolls: Dragon Roll- it had crispy tempura shrimp, avocado wrapped in sushi rice and nori seaweed; it was topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds. Shrimp Tempura Roll- which had Tempura Shrimp, Avocado, Cucumber, Tobiko, and Homemade Eel Sauce Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll- fresh minced tuna, seaweed, rice, and I believe popped rice to make it crunchy Honestly, all delicious. I couldn't find a negative. The sushi were fresh and innovative. The menu had so many delicious options that I wanted to try all of it in one sitting, if I was a rich sumo wrestler lol. I am obsessed. I see why it's a fan favorite and ranked on Yelp's Top 100 in the US. Gohan is now my #1 favorite for sushi. Like honestly in the entire country. It is on the smaller side because it's so unassuming in the middle of a strip mall. But the chefs are incredible with wonderful servers. My wife and I have been really enjoying a new found love of sushi so on a recent date night I searched for top sushi restaurants in the state and we made a drive. Glad we made a reservation because there are only maybe ten small tables and all were filled when we arrived on a Thursday evening. Food was all excellent. Very good sushi, worth the trek. Came here because of the top 100 list entry. Plaza is very unassuming, in the middle of a shopping district. When we came, the restaurant was 15 minutes from closing. They take an hour for lunch every day, and shut down fully. They let us order to go though, so we put in our order rapidly and waited in the car. Food came out quickly, took some pics and dug in. The sushi was top notch, even if they were all to-go. The tuna was treated well, fresh and seasoned lightly. The wasabi was fresh and the ginger was punchy. The flaming torch roll was beefy and toasty, the dark angel roll was tangy, creamy and spicy. The only issue was the spicy tuna was a little mushy with little texture difference. We would've loved actually dining in and getting the full experience, but if this is the quality one gets when they are closing up just shows their commitment to their craft. The service is good, seems like they have a lot of regulars and since it's such a small place, you'd get recognize quickly if you came a few times. First off, to anyone that says "all sushi spots are the same" this place will prove you wrong. The standards for the quality of fish here are high and you can taste the difference. I mean just look how vibrant that salmon is. They're known for their sushi rolls and Paradise cake, Crazy Tuna roll and Tiger roll are only some of the rolls I've had but they were all amazing. The seamless blend of flavors, from the addition of citrus to their rolls to the unique sauces, you can tell a lot of care has been put into the design of each roll. I would come back just for the paradise cake though, insane blend of crunchy and soft textures. I'll admit I was a little doubtful because the same sounded gimmicky but boy was I wrong. Truly savored every bite and didn't want it to end . Service is amazing as always, super friendly and inviting. Having such a small seating area means the restaurant has kind of a homey feel, yet the food and presentation really takes you to flavor-town. Gohan came highly recommended by many of my foodie friends. Since I'm a big fan of sushi, I had to check them out for myself. They are located in a shopping plaza with other food options and stores, Gohan can be easily missed--a gem hidden in plain sight, if you will. We were instantly greeted when we walked in and seated. The menu was simple compared to other sushi restaurants which I liked. Since we arrived during lunch hours (Tues-Sat 11am-3pm), some of us took advantage of the lunch menu that had some great deals. I personal got the Snow White Roll listed on their Chef's Signature Rolls. My husband who isn't a fan of sushi got a Steak Fried Rice lunch that came with salad. The rest of the table got 3 roll lunch; Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, Paradise Cake Roll, and Spicy Salmon Bowl. Our dishes were prepared swiftly and arrived at the same time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I really enjoyed my Snow White Roll with its many layers of flavors. It was a little sweet and a little spicy, the perfect balance. It has coconut shrimp, spicy tuna, mango, and topped with seared chili white tuna, avocado, jalapeño, and flakes of coconut. It was delicious! I also tried the Paradise Cake Roll (another Chef's Signature Roll), that was uniquely layered with spicy salmon, regular salmon, avocado, eel, marinated Ikura, and citrus mayo. The flavors melted together and loved that neither of the ingredients over powered one another. The Signature Rolls are definitely where I think Gohan shines, I wish I could had tried more. Recently found this hidden gem Gohan Japanese Cuisine located in Southington, CT. I can't say enough about this place, I truly had a great experience, & I will be back again. The establishment is super cute. The space isn't huge but it has a few tables available. The staff was super friendly and continued to check in on us, which showed just how great the customer service was. I love finding a great lunch deal & their prices on the daily are reasonable already so I could not complain! Started off with the salad and miso soup, tasted as expected but all served in a timely manner prior to the appetizers! We then received the Titan sushi appetizer which was truly astonishing in looks as well as the taste. How does a nondescript sushi place in a strip mall in Southington have universal five stars on Yelp? Because it just might be the best sushi restaurant in Connecticut. Just putting it out there because while I was excited to try this place based on my friends' reviews I wasnt prepared for how much it lived up to their hype. First off: shoutout to the owners. Just the nicest in the world. You can't help but root for them. But then the rolls. Just magnificent perfection. We had the Tiger Roll while had the thinnest slice of lemon on top. Why? As the owner explained: because citrus goes great with seafood. And she was right. It IS great. As good as that was, the montage mountain might be even more creative with crispy sushi rice topped with spicy tuna, avocado, eel, spicy crab and crispy onion. And then we had the sashimi roll (no rice). So good. What was amazing about them is that none of them needed any soy sauce. They were just great on their own. I am usually the type of person to only have cooked sushi, but this place was so clean, I immediately trusted the food quality. All 3 of the sushi rolls we ordered were perfectly balanced in flavor. It was truly the best sushi I've ever had in CT! My husband is obsessed with sushi, and said he won't be able to eat at any other sushi restaurant in CT besides this one from now on. He's from Miami and has had sushi around the US, so I trust his opinion. We also had gyoza and chicken katsu. Both were delicious and very well executed. This place is AMAZING!!!!!!!! Need I say more? I guess I do. The owners are great! Any questions we had were answered, we got great recommendations based on our likes and needs (were quickly told which rolls were spicy, gluten free, and which others were not GF but could be made GF, and which always contain gluten). Everything was super fresh and the presentation was incredible. The space is small so there aren't a lot of tables, but hopefully you'll be lucky enough to snag one. We got there early (maybe 5-5:30 on a weeknight) and were the only table, but during our meal the restaurant filled up and it was great to see the regulars that knew exactly what they wanted and the new folks that heard about this spot and needed time checking out the menu and talking to the owner to decide which items to order. We tried: Rainbow Roll Spring Breeze Roll Peanut Avocado Roll Tiger Roll Paradise Cake Flame Touch (must try! Steak on top; think surf and turf!) In her Yelp review, my friend Christina M, encouraged people to "run, don't walk" to 5 Star Yelp-rated Gohan Sushi. I am guilty of not running to Gohan after seeing Christina's review. Moreover, I walked very slowly, and my path was circuitous. It was my loss. Gohan is terrific. Although Gohan has a small, unassuming dining area (maybe 6 or so tables), the amazing service makes you feel like you're in a friend's home. Our server (who I think may have been an owner) remembered every group who had ever been there before and greeted them enthusiastically. One group drove from Massachusetts. Another from Simsbury. Just to visit Gohan. Can you imagine all the closer sushi options they passed over? Our server took time to understand what we like and then tailored recommendations to our tastes. This led to my wife and I splitting three specialty rolls and a Spicy Tuna with avocado roll, and our family also shared a shrimp app, spring rolls and a Salad with carrot dressing. I often think the specialty rolls at most CT places are fairly similar. That is not the case at Gohan. Our tiger roll was filled with spicy salmon, mango and avocado, and topped with Aburi Salmon and edible sweetened lemon pieces. Beautiful and delicious. The Flame Touch Roll was filled with spicy crunchy tuna and tempura asparagus, and topped with flame torched steak, jalapeño and red onion. Surf and turf in a roll. It looked and tasted like nothing else I've ever seen. Delicious. The other rolls were very good too. The rolls bursted with colors, tastes and shapes. Awesome work. The Apps and Salad were also good. The salad vegetables tasted very fresh and the carrot dressing was a step or two up from most. The spring rolls had good flavor and texture and the sweet dipping sauce was delicious. Gohan Sushi is one of my fav CT Food Discoveries in recent years. Let me introduce you to the Yelpie food chain. I learned about Gohan through Fellow Yelper Jason P who learned about it through Yelper Christina M. Since then we've seen more and more of our fellow friends in the community try Gohan and love it. I consistently am thinking about their sushi and when I can make the trip over to get it next. Every time I've been here I'm absolutely not disappointed. Between friendly staff who care and remember their customers to of course the great sushi. High quality always and uniquely made. My favorite is the sashimi roll which I've gotten every time. There's a special sauce made that pairs perfectly with the roll to dip instead of soy sauce. I also love the paradise cake because of all the different flavors and fishes packed in the roll. Tiger roll is light and citrusy with one of my favorite fish, salmon. I haven't had a bad choice yet! Other chef signature rolls I really enjoyed include the flame touch as the buttery ribeye steak is put atop the fishes in the roll. The montage mountain is a nice crunch and a more cooked roll than the rest. The toro lovers roll is a tuna fan's dream. The team at Gohan actually remember what I've ordered before and know what my tastes are. I'm gonna try this whole menu one day because I'm that confident everything is good. This might just be my new favorite sushi spot.. I was craving sushi Thursday night and decided to go on Yelp and try a random place I've never been to before. I stumbled upon Gohan and decided to give it a try simply based on the photos of the interior being aesthetic, modern, and clean. I went in a group of 4 and we sat at the table against the wall displaying the cute Pokemon cans of soda. We actually didn't even notice at first, but our server pointed it out. The staff was attentive and humorous and gave great suggestions for what we should order. The tako su was refreshing, and with its perfect chew and citrusy flavor, I would consider delightful. The Montage Mountain special roll is probably one of the best rolls I've ever eaten. The crispy rice was hot and paired well with the raw fish flavor- and texture-wise. I just ate there 30 minutes ago. I saw it had a high rating and thought I would try it out. I'm still relatively new to the area and it's the first restaurant that made me feel this good. If anything on the downside, the eat in area is a bit small but the food was really wonderful. They do not serve beer but they told me they are fine if you want to bring your own. Their tea was good. I was already having a great day and eating there made it even better. The staff were very nice. I'm not the type to stick up my nose and tell everyone what I think is the best. This is different. I am in such a great mood right now. As it was my first time, I rolled the dice on the Sushi & Sashimi Combo.
