I really hate to downgrade this place because it has some serious sentimental value. I previously brought my Fiance (now husband) here for his birthday-the first we ever celebrated together & we had fond memories of this place. Maybe it was the glow of "new love" & that was a few years ago now, but something is definitely off. The best thing they have going is the "Sushi Happy Hour". The prices are really good & the rolls were ok considering the price. I did also enjoy the Blue Lemon drop Martini on the Happy Hour menu, but the rest of the meal was just a big disappointment. We did not sit at the grill like last time, so maybe that was part of the problem. We sat in the front area, which appears to be like a neighborhood bar. It was a bit noisy & busy in the bar area. My husband wanted to switch his onion soup (which came with the Teriayki Steak) for the Egg drop soup & we were willing to pay the DIFFERENCE in price. We were advised that we would have to pay the full $5 price for the Egg drop soup because the Onion soup is "complimentary" & is not factored into the price of the entree. The Manager came out from the back to deliver this news. I could not believe it was that serious over a bowl of soup. Now on to the entree. My husband's steak was not cooked properly as he ordered it (medium), but after dealing with the Manager about the soup issue, he was reluctant to send it back. The serving size was extremely small for the $16 or $17 price in my opionion **see photo** and it definitely "looked" better than it tasted. Went based on reviews but was disappointed. The waitstaff was really nice but our waitress wasn't good and her boobs were hanging out for us to see (my son commented to me about it). The food was fine so my review is based mostly on the cleanliness. The floor was sticky and had crumbs all over it. Also the back of our booth was broken so every time I leaned back so did the booth until other customers come and sat. We were next to the fish tank and that didn't help because if you are going to have one in a restaurant next to your eating customers that sucker better be clean! It wasn't and just grossed me out. Our bill was over 80.00 for 3 people so if I'm going to pay that much I'm going to a place that's cleaner. read more

We have been supporting this place since they opened, maybe 10 years or more. The food and service has always been top-rate, until tonight. We have made friends with the staff but those people have all left. Tonight, my wife and son got their entrees, my son even mentioned to the waiter that I had not received mine, and they ate in front of me for about 30 minutes. We started looking around for the waiter, but I finally got impatient and blew up at the staff. I asked where Marcus was, the hibachi chef who always sat with us to talk, and he had resigned. All the old wait staff that knew us had left. They were not terribly busy, but there is absolutely no excuse whether we were first timers or 10 year regulars, to not get 1 entree out of three, and for the clueless waiter to not recognize that I did not get my dinner. So I blew up at the staff, demanded to pay my bill so we could leave, and paid $111.34 with $0 tip, but I'm pretty sure that they did not take the $20 entree that I never got off the bill. Bonsai Fusion Japanese Steak House is the best place to go to quench your late night craving for hibachi. I highly recommend going on a Friday or Saturday because you just might get Shawn, a Hibachi Master Chef, to fascinate you and your guests while preparing your food. Shawn is excellent in recognizing his audience by sensing the type of performance he should put on to capture your imagination. His tricks with his cooking utensils and fire dazzled us and the most important part was he magnificently prepared our food. I'm giving this place 2 stars because I thought the sushi was really good. Other than that I was not very pleased. I came in with a friend for happy hour and our waitress was new and had no clue what was going on. When our food was brought to us they had failed to mention that they combined our sushi on the same plate so we thought we were missing a plate. We then had some random guy who hadn't been helping us walk up out of no where while 2 other waiters looked on and asked, "is there a problem?". Lol talk about AWKWARD. We had really been liking this place, as its the only hibachi-type restaurant that served Kobe steak, which my mom enjoys. We recently went here for the second time and my son spotted a large roach. He jumped up and killed it, but that pretty much ruined it for us. My son ran and told the waiter and he completely ignored the situation (that we could see) and it didn't seem like it was a big deal. One of the toilets was also completely clogged/filled and needed immediate attention. A manager never came or anything. The soup and salad is definitely not as good as "the other restaurants" of this type but I really enjoyed that they incorporate broccoli into their vegetable stir fry. We thought that we had found a new place until the above incidents, oh well. read more

Everything was decent. Nothing stood out as far as the sushi. Service was good. Edamame was edamame. Rolls looked my daughter made them. A little light on ingredients for the price. They do have happy hour prices before 7pm which made it an ok value. I've had comparable sushi at a good Chinese buffet. read more

The food was ok, but was totally un-impressed when the cook spent a good amount of time talking to use (while he was cooking) about how we needed to tip him separately in cash from the waitress. We didn't bring it up, he did, and kept on and on about it. We've eaten at many different hibachi grills and put the tip for both on the ticket. I have always assumed that the waitress tips out to the cook. We found this insulting that the cook not only brought it up, but talked about it for nearly half the time he was cooking for us. The staff was great, especially this last time where my Gf and I sat at the Hibachi table, and were entertained by the chef, who was quite good. The food was cooked to perfection and the he did a great job of making sure everything was the way it was supposed to be, even checking on my Gf's sushi. So I was pleased with that. The wait staff was friendly and thorough. We eventually moved to the bar and continued chatting with the staff throughout. It's Monday evening and Bonsai was pretty quiet. My family & I came here to celebrate my mom's birthday. We chose to sit on the hibachi side and were quickly served our drinks. We ordered 3 appetizers: edamame, spring rolls & crab puffs. It was happy hour, so the prices were very reasonable. All three were delicious! The dipping sauce for the spring rolls & puffs was yummy--you could taste the honey it was sweetened with. Broth and salad that come with dinner are similar to what you would get at Benihana's, but that's where the similarity ends (taste wise). Fried rice was ok, not particularly worth $2.50 extra, so stick with the steamed rice and spend the $2.50 on an appetizer. I had the Kobe beef prepared medium and it was spectacular. Seasoned perfectly and cooked as requested by our hibachi chef Chris. Veggies that come with dinner were also tasty. Other items we got were the surf & turf and the samurai. Plates were left with just a few crumbs after we were done! They treated my mom to a slice of cheesecake in honor of her birthday. All in all Bonsai is a great place for terrific food. As we headed out, we were asked to please come again, and to keep in mind that reservations are a good idea if we planned on coming Friday or Saturday evening. read more

It's a shame that the manager didn't even care about my opinion of the food that was served to me. I ordered a $28 meal which is the House Delight, I believe. That was a ribeye and shrimp meal. The portion was pathetic and when I told the manager so, he went back and re-made the meal, but instead of it being on a square plate he put it on a rectangular plate. Why? I'm not sure, there was the same amount of food as before...maybe a little more veggies. If this was SHOGUN there would've been a full plate! Just sayin'! If I'm paying this price I want to feel like I'm getting what I paid for. I wish I'd have taken pictures. The waiter was a really smug and when I explained the portion issue he just shrugged it off. Not the way you should treat a customer who was polite and trying to help them out by informing them of the issue. The food was decent, but not worth the price!
