The food gets a 10 Star. The staff is rude, rude rude! Can't get us out fast enough. Didn't refill our drink. I had to ask for a drink after not being offered one or even water. My daughter has food allergies so we asked for a non traditional dipping sauce. We received the rudest look and she didn't try to hide her disgust. She was not even our waitress who was sweet. She took over and then when it came time to pay, I could not find my card. It was in my purse but it fell Out of the wallet. Now, At this point I am in a walking boot after surgery on my foot limping the whole time so it's not like I was going to dine and dash. I asked her to give me a moment to look in my purse to find it and she absolutely would not leave scowling and staring at me the whole time. There was no reason for her to stand there and the place was even packed.. I just had to my daughter since the food was so good we should go back knowing what we're in for and mess with them this time. Update: 2/2/2020 Went in good still Good. Same rude person was there and we only got a small plate. I've talked to so many people and they have had the same experience. It's like a joke now. Good thing the food is good. Decent sushi place. Haven't tried much of the Thai food but I hear it's not bad. The quality of the sushi is pretty good and they don't skimp out on fish. The only reason why this is a 3 and not a 4 is because I'm not a huge fan of their specialty roll selection. A lot of them tend to be deep fried or basked in some kind of sauce that overtakes the flavor of the fish in the roll. Also they use a decent amount of rice for their rolls/sushi. My all time favorite sushi place! I've been coming here for years, and their consistently great. Their happy hour prices are such a good deal, and they have have amazing specialty rolls. Their crunchy shrimp roll, and baked snow crab roll are out of this world. Both under $8 each, and the baked snow crab roll is huge, and filling. Really relaxing atmosphere with led lights. Love the sushi here, always fresh and delicious and the prices are good. Drinks are good too! I usually get the Plum wine which is my "go to" at any sushi place, unless I know they have superior cocktails. I like that we can drop in here on the weekends without having to wait too long. Service is quick and efficient and if you happen to be shopping in the area, this is a very convenient locaiton on Route 9 just outside the mall! read more

Only my first time going here and I totally enjoyed it. I had Udon soup and my girlfriend had Sushi. We both enjoyed are food very much. Are Waitress was very friendly and helpful. My waitress didn't understand the word "nigiri" so not actually Japanese. I would guess Korean. Did not appear to be Thai, although this restaurant also serves Thai food. I was not greeted at the door, the owner and waitress who were waiting tables were in back somewhere. Owner appeared after a few minutes and I was seated and received my drink order pretty quickly - hot sake. Tasted like they had boiled away some of the alcohol though. I had to wait far too long to have my order taken, eventually getting up and flagging down the waitress. The owner who seated me was in the back working on a to go order. Maybe they divide up the tables? Ordered an infinity roll (tempura shrimp and avocado inside, eel and avocado on top), a spicy salmon avocado crunch roll, and an order of hamachi nigiri. Hamachi is usually a good test for how fresh a sushi place's fish is. If its fresh, it's firm, buttery, and delicious. If it's not fresh it turns mushy and tastes a bit fishy or sour. The hamachi was fresh and delicious. I've had better, but only rarely. I considered ordering another piece (I forgot when I ordered it that "one order" for sushi is only one piece here, instead of the usual two.). The tempura shrimp in the Infinity roll was freshly fried and crispy, and there were TWO of them. Big roll. Spicy salmon roll was well balanced and tasty. Portions were surprisingly generous, especially for the Infinity roll. Owner came by and checked on me during the meal, so that's good. I would definitely go back. Food was great. Service appears to be the biggest weakness here. read more

On our 3rd visit to the fine Japanese restaurant we opted for the Sushi Sashimi combo for two. The quality and freshness of the beautifully prepared dish was outstanding. Our server made the visit even more enjoyable with her pleasant demeanor , outgoing personality and plethora of information on the many dishes available from their extensive menu. I have been here before on two separate occasions, because I normally frequent the original Bonsai near Hoopla. Service was quick and attentive for most of the meal, and sushi was flavorful but mediocre at best. I ordered the same two rolls (Spicy Trio and Midnight Sun) that I get at Bonsai (#1), but was disappointed with the quality of the fish, and the excessive rice used in each. Couple that with a family who was unable to control their screaming child's temper tantrum, we will probably stick to the Bonsai near Starbucks from now on. read more

This is why 3 stars instead of 2. cons - hostess had a strange "zombi-like" (dead, unemotional and uninvolved) personality, first, we had little problems with being noticed and seated then at the end she walked by our bill with credit card ready to pay at least 6 times during 10 miinutes waiting for payment without looking at it or at us while really doing nothing else, than she wasn't able to tell us where is Bonsai #1 is located ) waitress was very sweet and nice but we had rather long periods of time were weren't able to locate her when we needed something. And place wasn't super busy. not sure why. and major "con" for us - place is right next to a nail salon and if you are sensitive - you can smell nail polish remover as soon as you walk in. Since me and my boyfriend decided to catch a movie we had time to grab a bite to eat. Bonsai was conveniently located there in the shopping center so that was cool. We we're greeted with smiles when entering and was seated right away. I ordered spicy tuna rolls, shumai and a few other rolls. Boyfriend ordered shrimp pad Thai which he finished. This new place is the relative of Bonsai (I?), which we rather like. Decided to check out this place, just because. It was OK. You know how it is, a great sushi place has great "raw" sushi. It is easier to do the boisterous spicy tempura type fried/cooked sushi well. We DO like that sort of thing, and Bonsaii II did those rather well. One of us ordered this nice deal called "dinner bento box" which had some shrimp tempura roll and some other spicy roll. Good. But our sashimi plate was just okay (fresh, but barely), without any of the oh-my-goodness-I-must-be-in-heaven sensation sashimi can sometimes engender. Hence the 3 stars. The miso soup was not that great. read more

However, I was with a group of 6 people around lunch time and yes the restaurant was more packed than usual, but the server was ABSOLUTLEY RUDE! She threw a plate of sushi down on the table after someone not claiming it "quick enough". We did not see her after this incident and another more FRIENDLY waitress continued to serve us for the rest of the meal. I would love to keep going back for the sushi, but NOT for the service. As pseudo-Japanese restaurants go (I haven't seen a "Japanese restaurant" run by actual Japanese north of Tarrytown), this place is pretty good. Pleasant atmosphere, good prices, and the food is fairly good. There are, or were, two specialties. The first is the sushi. The sushi at the Bonsai II is the best I've found in the Poughkeepsie area. The sushi chef, while not Japanese himself, was trained at a fairly good Japanese restaurant in Manhattan and really knows what he's doing. The second specialty is, or was, the Pad Thai, which is not available at the other Bonsai location to the north. When I tried it last year it was really excellent, and an acquaintance who is from Thailand told me it tasted authentic, just like the dish does in Thailand. However, Bonsai II apparently got a new chef about five months ago, and the last time I visited the Bonsai II the Pad Thai was decidedly mediocre, mushy and pasty, and nowhere near as tasty. I would still go there for first-rate sushi, but unless it was just a bad day for the chef this last time I went, I mourn for the Pad Thai that was. read more

This was my fist time eating at a sushi bar. My sister, a sushi pro, recommended we go and took me along for the ride. I was blown away. The dumplings are the best I've ever had.You're missing out if you don't try them! All the wait staff were friendly and the service was really fast. The atmosphere was great and loved the challenge of only getting chop-sticks to use. Happy hour seems like the right time to come here. The sushi here is pretty good as far as the lunch specials. I believe the tuna to be genuine tuna, which is hard to find these days. I like the 3 roll special the best, as it comes with a miso soup and salad. The crab roll is my favorite. My only issue is the decor...it's slightly dated. I am a big fan of Bonsai ! My friends and I love to come here for their Happy Hour, an awesome deal on some of their more basic, yet tasty, rolls and appetizers. The staff is always very polite and speedy, and the restaurant is always very clean and far from noisy. I visit this place a few times a month, and I recommend it if you are looking for sushi at a good price. I give it a 4 out of 5 for the good food, prices, and service, but I save the fifth star only because it isn't the best sushi I have ever had, and without Happy Hour, it can get a bit pricey. read more

I arrived at 9:15 on a Monday. Walked in and said for here. She replied are you gonna be gone by 10 because that's when we close. So I ordered and all the food came at once. The waitress was very rude. Like I was holding her up. Food was great service and wait staff sucks. They talk very bad about the customers as well. I speak Cantonese and Mandarin and they have nothing but bad things to say about me and me showing up late. Not to mention the other Caucasian couple sitting across from me that they were speaking of stating why don't they just leave now that guy needs no more food.
