Perfectly adequate American style sushi shop. I guess there are three establishments in the Poughkeepsie/Wappingers Falls area so they must be doing something right. I sat at the sushi bar both times I dined here. I don't know if customers who sit at the regular tables get a complimentary appetizer but when sitting at the sushi bar, I did. Both times. Next time, sit at the sushi bar. The first was a seared tuna cut thin, and served with a ponzu sauce. The second was cubed salmon and avocado which was also served with a ponzu sauce, a little tobiko (flying fish roe), and deep fried panko, for crunch. Both were probably the highlights of the meal. Nigiri zushi - hit the spot but was not particularly noteworthy. On the first occasion, the nigiri seemed fragile. The sushi rice didn't seem to want to hold together. Sections of rice clumps fell off from underneath the cut fish. I only dipped the corner of the fish into the soy sauce while holding the nigiri with my chopsticks. I didn't dunk the rice into the soy. I even tried to eat the nigiri with my fingers (washed my hands before the meal), which is a perfectly acceptable way to eat nigiri. It still fell apart. Weird. Spider roll - I like the contrasting textures of soft rice and crunchy, deep fried soft shell crab. Spiders and crabs aren't the same thing but they are both arthropods...maybe very distant cousins. Tangent...sorry. If you "need" to have sushi, Bonsai II won't disappoint. read more

Having traveled to Japan numerous times, we won't say that this is an authentic Japanese food experience. What you will get is reliable American style Japanese food at a reasonable price. Don't expect Japanes Hospitality - the servers are rarely overly friendly. They are capable. I often wonder if they are paid adequately because they always seem to be a bit impatient. The restaurant is clean and the food comes out quickly and efficiently. The presentation is reliably pleasant. Bonsai is a very good sushi option in the mid Hudson Valley. I have eaten here quite a bit, and have always felt that the food was well prepared. The ambience is a little over the top with multicolored lights in the ceiling and around the restaurant, but it is well lit and clean. The food always tastes fresh, the soup is hot, and everything is delicious. I recently had the chef special sushi lunch and it was very good. I did see that one of the sushi chefs had a cold or allergies or something. He was sniffling and wiping his nose a bit. The other one prepared our food. :-| Service can be hit or miss. When I went yesterday we were not greeted upon entry and we helped ourselves to the chef station seats. The wait staff was not particularly friendly nor unfriendly, just ambivalent. I can't believe it's taken us so long to eat here! Four+ years living in the area and we tend to only seem to eat sushi in the city or on LI, yet this perfectly great place exists close to our (former as of next week) home. It's our final week here in Wappinger's Falls and naturally with our kitchen all wrapped up, we need to hit up our favorite places to eat, but on Monday all of those places seemed to be closed for Labor Day. I remembered the stellar reviews for Bonsai, all three of their locations and two of them were open. Yes, it's in a strip mall but it's lovingly decorated and has Japanese aesthetics in droves. The interior is spacious but inviting and there are booths against the wall for more privacy if you're not looking to dine out in the open. Service was prompt and attentive. I was really intrigued by all of the veggie sushi rolls and in addition to my typical AAC and avo/cucumber, I had a veggie roll with oshinko and yuba that is delicious. I'm a fan and regrets, I have a few, for not having tried it sooner. But I have a feeling we'll be back in the area from time to time, so it'll go on my list for sure. read more

So to the service I mean pretty attentive as far clearing plates and offering refills, plus there, but other that seemed to want to hang out more then serve. Just my two cents though. The Food, very impressive, I got a spicy tuna roll that actually had a kick spicy wise, plus the crunchy part on top rather then mixed in with tuna as filler. Pepper tuna roll did not disappoint, very seasoned well and roll itself was amazing not cheap on the fillings. As for midnight sun roll, crunchy shrimp tempura , sliced smoked salmon, a very well seasoned pepper tuna again and a really good sweet and spicy sauce. The de rigueur: four inside-out California rolls, vegetables that could have used a longer drip time, and not be buried under the lid the shrimp made causing them to get soggy, two tiny gyoza like dumplings, and a side salad. Bonsai II is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Hudson Valley, and I've been a loyal customer for over a decade now! Their sushi is so fresh and competitively priced compared to other sushi places nearby, the staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy. Came back here since they opened up the dining room after Covid. I tried the sea weed salad for the first time. I guess I was expecting it to taste like seaweed but it didn't. It was really good which surprised me. We shared the Shumai and Gyoza dumplings. Honestly, really liked to Gyoza. They were sautéed perfectly but I felt the Shumai was bland and kinda mushy. This place used to be my go-to Japanese restaurant in the are, not so much anymore. I used to get fresh sushi and very yummy vegetable tempura from this establishment. The service used to be correct, not too friendly but no mistake on the orders. Lately, the service is sub-par. When I come in I feel like the staff is doing me a favor by taking my order and bringing my food. If I order something that is unusual, they almost want to convince me to get something else. The food is very greasy. Additionally, even if I order appetizers and entrees, everything gets delivered at my table at the same time. The tables are very small, so it makes for a very awkward meal. The prices and decor are fair. They have a very decent tempura ice cream. However, the service is pushing me away. I hope that the restaurant will get better soon. read more

I believe I found my new taste bud joy. Funny, I've seen this place active for over a year but never attempted to go in there because I had my maki roll place, until it closed down of course and was in search for a replacement. Well Bonsai did that and more. The rolls are pretty excellent and any spot that has chicken rolls, has a soft spot in my warm and cold heart. But I must mentioned, the avocado and almond roll... the guilt free roll is beyond. I don't eat seafood, so the chicken and vegetable rolls are the only items I can sink my teeth into, but from the pictures from the menu, I do slightly wish I stepped over that line. They also have a good assortment of drinks and definitely have my nogori which is not on the menu but they have bottles which is displayed around the restaurant. The prices are good, clean, plenty of parking, good service, so all in all, a place that must be added to one's list. read more
