I ordered online. Was told my order would be ready at 4:21. Showed up at 4:15. I wasn't told when I ordered that the restaurant is closed 3-430pm. Ok no big deal so I wait. 4:30 and they don't open. I am making this review at 4:41 and restaurant is still closed and dark inside. After a long bicycle ride (well, long for my 9 & 10-year-olds) in the Everglades National Park at Shark Valley, we took a lunch break at Bonsai 8th Street in Miami, FL. On June 7, 2024, we were immediately greeted and seated at a table of our liking. The break from the sweltering heat was greatly appreciated. All of the staff members were extremely friendly and quick to serve us. We enjoyed all of the following: Spring Rolls ($6) Wonton Soup ($7) Miso Soup ($4) Tom Khan Soup + shrimp ($9) Fancy Dragon Roll ($22) I loved the pink light-up sign behind the bar. Parking was easy and free in a shared plaza lot. The only thing I would change is the lighting in the women's restroom. It was very dim. Doesn't look like much from outside but once you walk in it's a pretty big location. Lots of seating available and a nice bar. At the entrance you have the hostess who helps you with seating. The one that attended us was named Lucia and she was so lovely. Very friendly and super accommodating to what we wanted. Once we were sat, our waitress was named Emily and she is the best! Was super attentive, helped us understand the menu better and even gave us some recommendations which turned out to be amazing! Bonsai I applaud you for the phenomenal workers you have on your team! Then came the food and it was great!! I ordered Pad Thai, which Emily made sure to let me know that it is not your typical noodles because it is actually sweet tasting due to the sauce, and I could not have love it more. If you want a twist to your usual noodles I highly recommend this plate! Before the main plate, we got the Avocoado salad which comes with shredded crab, carrot, and lettuce mixed in and it was so so good. The shrimp was delicious along with the Gyozas. I visited Bonsai with a friend before we drove back to the Keys last night and what can I say: What a great experience it was. The staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful. The young server who had my table a waiter in training, and he still managed to make the experience unforgettable. Lucy, the waitress training him was also extremely agreeable. Very professional and amiable staff. If that wasn't enough, the food was just as good. I had the Tiger Tear appetizer, a Rainbow Roll and a Sashimi Mori. I What made the night for me was the fact that I ordered a Green Tea Shot that had lime. This drink was super citrusy and delicious. Highly recommended. We just got off the cruise ship and had some time before our flight back home. This was close to the Gator Park we were going to so we stopped by. SERVICE - There was only one other man eating in the restaurant when we were there so the waitress was attentive. She was very stoic and never smiled but she got the job done and was quick. FOOD Lobster Roll - This came with tempura lobster in the roll and also on the side. It was delicious and we enjoyed it very much. Rolls were fresh with a lot of flavor. Presentation was great. They gave you a nice amount of lobster. Thai Curry - My brother ordered this dish and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had a nice curry flavor with large chunks of meat. Beef Dish - My husband got this and the beef was tender. The sauce was good and the veggies were well cooked. Spicy Noodles - I got the mild level and wish we went a little spicier. They do not use the normal wide egg noodles but this was more of a linguine type of noodle. Dish was still very tasty. Thai Fried Rice - My mom really wanted this so we ordered it. Server was fine in accommodating our change. No big deal. Then food came out. Firstly, the portions were huge! Food came out fresh and promptly. Taste was great. Bonsai offers both Japanese (sushi) and Thai food. I think the food was pretty average - the rolls we ordered were pretty good, the Drunken Noodles wasn't very authentic. I also thought that the electronic music was way too loud and gave the restaurant almost a club vibe. read more

Ordered over the phone and went to pick it up. Took over an hour. I received the wrong sushi roll, similar but not the same. I ordered a fancy dragon roll and got a roll with asparagus or something similar to asparagus. They had food piling up at the counter but it never belonged to the people walking in to pick up orders. I didn't mind the wait, but it sucks to wait and then get the wrong roll. This place has been around for years and has gotten worse with time. read more

My boyfriend and I chose Bonsai 8th Street for date night last night and we were quite impressed. The restaurant is located in a shopping center on the corner of 8th Street and SW 142nd Avenue. If you don't drive into the shopping center, you might miss it because the Bonsai sign is dimly lit and not very legible from 8th Street. Or at least it was last night. We ordered the Tuna Tower for appetizer. Holy moley was this amazing. It's a giant soup can sized tower of tuna layered with avocado, seaweed, masago, sesame seeds, scallions and white steamed rice. It's served with large wanton chips and drizzled with a ponzu or sesame oil. Everything about this dish is perfect - our only suggestion is that the wonton chips be crispier. Ours were really stale and cold. Not the right consistency for digging into the Tuna Tower. We each ordered a specialty roll. I ordered the Volcano Shrimp Tempura Roll and he ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll. Both were delicious and really satisfying. The Volcano Roll that I ordered has baked seafood on top of a traditional Shrimp Tempura Roll. If you like cooked rolls, you'll love this one. We also ordered two (2) Wonton Soups. This was the absolute best Wonton Soup I have ever had - hands down. The service was also decent and the price was really good for all the food we ordered. I would definitely recommend and return to try other menu options. I would have given this place four (4) stars but the stale/cold wontons and the somewhat attentive service are the only things really holding me back. The food here is great. I've always ordered the drunken noodles. Price was usually about $12-14 which although hefty it was worth it for me. Service is always great. Staff is very nice. Brief stay but a great way to start the night! The Rocking Shrimp was amazing. The ginger and honey covered your entire palate and it had a nice, crisp texture. The Gyoza was good in flavor, but the dough for it was kind of mushy. Will probably get them fried next time. The bar makes their own ginger beer, so getting a mule is a must! It came out pretty spicy! But don't settle for a Moscow Mule - mix it up and ask for a sake mule instead! I am never ordering a Moscow Mule anywhere anymore if sake is available. Went on a Friday night 7:30pm. It was decently busy but not packed. Their happy hour is on Monday-Friday 5-8pm so we caught it just in time. They offer cocktails and wines for $6 and appetizers. SERVICE: We were seated quickly and given a menu but no water was served. We had to ask someone for it, and this was about 10 min in, which I don't think is acceptable. The waiter, although he was nice, took a while to come and take our order... so I think they need to be more attentive to restaurant goers. This is the only reason I gave them a 4/5. DRINKS: Moscow mule had bits of ginger so there's a kick to it. It burns your throat a little but it's really good! Margarita is delicious, cup is rimmed with plenty of salt. Don't wait until the end of your meal to finish because it gets watered down. APPETIZER: their Kanisu is to die for. Highly recommend! It's crab with avocado wrapped with thinly sliced cucumber, super delicious, sweet and savory ENTREE: Beef Red Curry - I got the mild so it was a bit spicy but the coconut really balanced it out and gave it a sweet flavor. It was a delicious meal and a big portion so it's definitely worth the price. The brown rice was kind of hard, not ideal, but with the curry it made it a lot better. Decided to order carry out the other night and I was so disappointed in the quality of sushi. This use to be my favorite sushi spot for years and to be honest the taste and quality has gone down so much. The spicy tuna roll was super small and it didn't even taste fresh, the reg dragon was pricey and not good at all the avocado was brown and the taste was whatever, I also ordered a ginger salad and the greens were red like if they were old. In comparison to the last time I went on Black Friday 2015, there seemed to be more variety. They have a Happy Hour menu now. Woohoo. Boyfriend ordered some shrimp appetizer from the Happy Hour menu and a glass of Pinot Noir with some chicken fried rice to go. Meanwhile, I opted to have a miso soup and chicken drunken noodles with a cocktail called the Geisha. The Geisha consists of cranberry juice, alcohol, and a sugar-coated ring. The food was fabulous and we had leftovers for a couple of days. We then chose to order dessert: Thai donuts. The donuts, as the rest of the food, were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the waitress was in such a rush it seems (and it wasn't even anywhere near to closing time - they still had an hour or so left) that she grabbed our plate before we could even complain. Mind you, all she took was the sauce for the Thai donuts but that did dampen the mood for a bit. I think this particular waitress needs to learn the art of patience, but oh well. That is the only reason I don't give five stars. I just hate, hate, hate the feeling of being rushed in a meal. She took away our Thai donuts' sauce and immediately brought the check. It rubbed me the wrong way. That aside, I love this place and will return. The décor is trendy, the food plentiful, and the parking is ample. My only hope next time? Bonsai offers a trendy, hip atmosphere while enjoying some sushi. Service is usually pretty good, and the food consistent. Weekends are pretty busy, so come earlier, to avoid the wait. The variety of sushi is pretty decent, including many different rolls, sashimi, and combos. It's a little more on the pricier side, but still comparable to prices at trendier sushi joints. They also offer some Thai selections, but we generally prefer the Japanese menu. Parking is readily available in the plaza. read more

We were a party of two and we enjoyed our food and drinks. Unfortunately, thats all I will write regarding the food for the service left a longer lasting impression. We were definitely served by an order taker, not a server. The lady was so cold, no charisma, no suggestions, everything I asked about was just "amazing", so no personal opinion there. I don't know you but service is a big part for me. And to top it off: Our bill was of $76. I handed her a $100 bill and she assumed I needed no change. Maybe I did not, but unless specified, I always expect my change even if I leave it all as tip after. Here with Kevin G. We having our drinks before our appetizers of Wonton Soup and Miso soup. We ordered two Mojitos. Miso soup was good. The Wonton soup was phenomenal according to Kevin. He says the grandmother makes it from scratch and when he comes here it's a must have. Says it's beyond delicious. We had all of our rolls and and they were all very delicious. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because we had to wait 1hour to get our food. I realize it's a Saturday night but we were sitting at the bar and finished our cocktails and had water and waited as other patrons came in and ordered and received their food before us.
