So here's the thing with Boon Kai, it is not a classy place. But, it's not trying to be. Yes, the places lacks in decor and may look a little sketchy but, it does have as I like to call it the best "cheap Chinese" around! Everything is fresh and tastes great. The service is always friendly, too. Never had a bad meal there and I am super pickey when it comes to Chinese food. we recently moved to the WL area, and were happy to find a good Chinese take out restaurant. I agree with other reviews: the restaurant itself is dark and uninviting. Carry out is the way to go here. Chicken fried rice is consistently good. We really like the sweet and sour chicken: good sauce on the side, no "weird" gristly chicken. Boon Kai is part of our regular carry out rotation! read more

I love Boon Kai, I lived in Walled lake for a good 10 years and Now I'm in a different state. I am constantly comparing other Chinese places to the food I know and love from Boon Kai, I have yet to find one that measures up. The Egg drop soup and Pepper steak is the best I have ever had, sure the inside is usually empty and dark, but who wants to be in a crowded place where someone is staring at you while you eat? Out dated decor, sure but i would rather they focus on the food instead of how up to date and trendy the dining room is. Only dislike is that they are closed on Mondays so if I have a hankering for Chinese on a Monday I would have to go somewhere else. Now every time I come home I make a trip to Boon Kai. Its a Walled Lake staple in my book. read more

Pretty run of the mill Chinese joint. Dark and sorta dingy on the inside. Food is greasy but you get plenty of it. If it tells you anything, I drove 15 minutes to another Chinese place today when I could have walked to Boon Kai....but it'll work in a pinch. read more

The food is better then most Chinese restaurants in the area but this place is definitely the filthiest place in town. the waitress "oh by the way was very rude" give us a bottle of sweet and sour sauce that was so dirty we didn't even want it on the table nevermind use it. After seeing all of the high star ratings, I gave Boon Kai another try. Sadly, despite my four year hiatus from this place, the food tastes the same as the last time I decided to quit going there. Slightly below average, they still are planted in the mid-70s style of serving American Chinese (dinner roll and all). We've been on the hunt for really good Chinese food for a loooooong time now and Boon Kai just didn't do it for us. Don't get me wrong, my husband and I both enjoyed our meals, but there wasn't really anything about either that would make me want to hurry back. We had the sesame and general tso's chicken combos. For about $6 per dish, each meal came with the chicken, fried rice, egg roll and a bread roll. The chicken was noticeably fresh, which is a huge plus. However, outside of that I couldn't help just kind of shrug my shoulders and give it a "meh" overall. I was also found it interesting that there wasn't a single piece of vegetable in anything. Like not even a tiny shred of green onion or sliver of carrot in the fried rice. Maybe my expectations were skewed but for now, we'll let the hunt continue.... read more

So we went there for dinner one night and it was not the best Chinese that I have ever had. mean it was just OK if I wanted to go for Chinese again I would definitely not go back there it would only be a place that I would return to if I wanted Chinese really bad an none of the other restaurants were open. read more

Have been coming here since I was quite young. Food use to be alot better back in the old days.. customer service is horrible. They messed up three of our chicken combination plates with pork, which all humans make mistakes.. but when we called and asked nicely to come back and change the pork to chicken and she rudely said we order pork (when we clearly did not.) And she wouldn't change the meals. After we continued to try and reason she hung up the phone. Have been a long time costumer until this last straw. I do recommend you pick a better Chinese place. Once upon a time was the best place for Chinese food! I have been going here since I was a child a very young child! I am 26 now and it has changed! I grew up eating here whenever we where in town! Recently for my 26th b-day on march 8 I had my mother order food from there enough to feed 15 people! egg rolls sweet rolls shrimp chow mein and orange chicken picked it up at 6pm! Was average! The next day when I went to heat a egg roll up little bugs crawled out of the egg roll! like little cock roaches! I will never eat there again! Awesome food, friendly staff, and reasonably priced. My favorite is the beef + broccoli and won ton soup. The food has flavor, but is not overly salty or over-seasoned. I highly recommend for dine-in or take-out. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I don't live in the area, but when I go to visit my aunt I always order from Boon Kai. I always order for pick up, so I can't attest to what it is like to eat there. From my experiences I can say that the food is fantastic and cheap. Can it get any better than that!!! Oh, and the food is almost always ready within 10 minutes (which seems to be much quicker than any place I am used to). I almost always eat the Almond Chicken. It's awesome. Try it! read more

As a recovering New Yorker always in search of "real chinese" food and by real i mean the storefront with the pictures on a big marquee inside and a menu riddled with typos, I tried Boon Kai. So the beef & broc was pretty decent, the dumplings were absolutely the worst, much like cardboard with an unbelievable salty soy to dip them in. Egg Rolls were mediocre at best and the fried rice was again decent. What i think is going on here is the chef has yet to discover green onions and ginger which when attempting this cuisine is a critical and for me fatal flaw. I had a really funny experience while waiting, which also took a while. So much for the ubiquitous 10 or 15 minute wait time, double that and you are in the ballpark. What i found funny though was the incredibly difficult time i had getting the lady up front to give me extra packets of duck sauce. I had to beg to the point where it was uncomfortable for me and i started to suspect i was being punked. It was like i was asking for a kidney. Hmmm chinese food and organ humor, probably shouldnt go here but oh well... I would give this place 2.5 stars but haven't figured out how to do that on yelp. Better than some around the Commerce/Wixom/Waterford/Walled Lake/Novi area but by no means good enough to try again. Funny I just glanced at another John K's review of this place and he gave it 5 stars. Sorry, just can't see where that is even remotely feasible. Taste buds of the the beholder i guess. read more

Excellent American Chinese. Almond chicken rocks not over breaded. broccoli beef is great, sweet and sour chicken and the dinner rolls are the BEST. my favorite egg roll and rockin hot and sour soup. I went here for the first time when my friend recommended it. We sat down and there was a fingernail on the table..... We still decided to stay.... They give you rolls which are hot and sweet (very tasty), crackers + sauce to dip them in. The food came and it was amazing. The Chicken was very very good. Prices are very reasonable (Combos + dinners are $9). Although on our last visit, I ordered beef and it looked dried out and was very chewy (not good!) Also, the table was sticky, the bottles of the red-ish sauce they gave us and the hot mustard they gave us for the crackers were both completely empty (AND STICKY!!), and the rolls were not fresh. Maybe it was just a bad day for them..... I will stick to ordering chicken when I go there next time. I would still recommend. read more

Went to Boon Kai for lunch on a Monday so maybe Monday's are bad but my wife and I ordered General Tso. Fried rice looked like they cleaned the grill with it (very dark). Soup was warm at best and the General Tso was tan in color (never seen this before) and the coating was caramelized like it had been left over from last week and heated up with only one side being exposed to the grill, teeth breaking crunchy. Took most of it home and threw it away. All the time we were there the waitress was snapping beans on a booth table no cutting board or sanitary gloves. Restaurant cleanliness is awful. Floors are filthy, booths and tables are broken down and the decor is atrocious. Now for the bad part....the food is disgusting and I'm far from a picky eater. I eat Chinese food a few times a month and I can't remember eating such bland, messy and soggy food. To be fair they did have pretty good dinner rolls but if your not in the mood for eating dinner rolls for dinner than you might want to find a different Chinese restaurant. read more

As others have mentioned,this is not a place for atmosphere and romantic dining. However, they are fantastic for "old style" chinese carryout food. One thing that I wanted to comment on was we just had Shrimp How Kar sp? and General Tso's chicken. I have never had chicken that was 'where part of the bird did that come from?". It has always been high quality meat in all the meals and if you get the Combo, you get a heavy duty Egg Roll and old style huge dinner rolls. So it's not Pei Wei, but is has been on my regular rotation for places to eat for the 20+ years I've been here. And the food portions are often enough to split into two meals, especially if you have the roll as part of the meal. read more
