This visit, we opted for the ice cream, though they have other options including shaved ice. The ice cream is Hershey's ice cream with a wide variety of options in stock as well as toppings and various cones. Though the line was nearly to the back of the building, we were in and out in under 15 minutes with four different orders. While you wait, you can also browse a surprisingly wide selection of Booty Treats merchandise and apparel. We enjoyed our ice cream at the picnic tables behind the building, and my daughter got to meet one of the owners (and his very friendly dog, Sundae). It was a hot, humid summer night so I was expecting a long line. Big Booty is divided into two sections: the ice cream store and the gift shop. The line snaked twice and then into the gift shop to the far end of the store. It took over 20 minutes to order and another 10 minutes to actually receive our order. And that is even after several other customers in front of us gave up and left. The wait waslikely due to several inefficiencies. One, the menu is only present at the front counter which causes customers to hold up the line as they look at the options. A menu at the stairs or in the gift shop area would alleviate some of the issue. Second, the online menu and the menu at the front were not the same and even the in-store menu was not accurate with what was available. Third, part of choosing a flavor is looking at the ice cream on display. However, half of the display is after the register which causes further delays as customers look before making their decisions instead of as they're moving through the line towards the register. Finally, the final deliver of the ice cream is total chaos. Not only did we have difficulty hearing our number from the cashier, but we heard them incorrectly. Then, instead of making all of the items in the order and calling the number, your number is called revert single time. It wasn't just our group that was confused. Other customers almost accidentally picked up ice cream that belonged to others or had to ask "Is that mine or yours?" The frustration and confusion service was unfortunately not lessened by the ice cream itself, and I most certainly had hoped it would. Most, if not all, of their options are purchased from Hershey Creamery. Additionally, my strawberry cheesecake had ice crystals starting to form. I don't know if that was because the constant exposure to the humid summer air during the busy hours or it was not kept cold enough, but icy ice cream is such a disappointment. read more

Bottom Line: A new, bigger Booty Treats location at MP 15.5 serving ice cream, shaved ice and other cold sweet treats. The beloved Booty Treats has closed their old Kill Devil Hills location and now they have two locations in Nags Head. This new location, called "Big Booty" is located in Nags Head in the chalet-looking building on the beach road at MP 15.5. Formally this was Scammell's Corner Ice Cream and prior to that it was The Chalet Gift Shop. Booty Treats offers all sorts of cold desserts like Hershey's brand ice cream, shaved ice and little pieces of ice cream called mini melts (like Dippin' Dots). I personally enjoy the hand dipped Hershey's ice cream the best and if I am feeling very indulgent then I get it smooshed between two cookies to make it a cookie sandwich. But I must say that is a whole lotta sweet for one person. For a lighter option and to branch out I most recently tried "The Booty Freeze" which is shaved ice with some mini melts in it. I did banana flavored ice with chocolate cookie dough mini melts and I frankly wasn't a fan. The contrasting textures were too weird for me and I quietly sat there and coveted my husband milkshake. But, I would come back and just try their Hawaiian Shave Ice again without the mini melts. The Big Booty location has a fairly sizeable selectin of merchandise - hats, t-shirts and such. They also have some arcade games. There are a few tables inside but most of the seating is outside in the form of picnic table and benches. There is seating in the side yard and out back. There is also plenty of parking out back with just a few spots along the beach road. I appreciate that they have napkin dispensers outside attached to the side of the building. Smart. This location used to be very similar but a totally different style inside with a run down gift shop in the larger part of the building and the ice cream parlor side had antique toys and stuff from wall to wall. They have essentially gutted the whole place, slapped up some wall art and paint, clean the place, and brightened it up. Definitely better! We walked in through the larger side of the building's front door, turned left to see where the ice cream and all is, to be yelled at with a smile ... "GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO BOOTY TREATS!!!" We couldn't help but smile and make our way to the counter. One scoop waffle cone of salted caramel was HUGE! Awesome portions. Everyone got a waffle cone with one scoop and we found out that it was a little tricky to get through the top before it began melting down the side of the cone. Definitely a good problem to have. Highly recommend trying the booty freeze (shaved ice with mini melts on top). They have a pup cup for your favorite puppers. They even top it with peanut butter. This place was a half mile from our beach house, so we often walked here for an after dinner treat. They had fall decorations outside and lots of sales in the gift shop for the end of the season. A friend got a sweatshirt that said "Got Booty?" and another friend got a bumper sticker by a local artist. We all tried many different flavors over the week and no one had a bad experience. I tried a customer creation that was listed on their website. It was called "Junk in the Trunk" and was very rich and chocolaty. I think half the portion would have been good. I've never had to throw away leftover ice cream before! :( The mini-melts are like dip n dotz. They have those, regular ice cream, shaved ice, and ice cream cookies. Their minty mint chip was indeed minty and delish. I wish they used more sustainable earth friendly supplies (waxed paper cups and wooden spoons instead of Styrofoam and plastic) but other than that it's a great place for a treat! read more
