After lots of suggestions from family and friends, I finally made my way to Boru Ramen. I really enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and quick service. The food came out super quick and hot (this is important because I know that my food is fresh). I am giving this a 4/5 stars because I feel like it was a bit overpriced compared to the other ramen places I've had. Also, considering that it's not really "expensive" meats being used I really don't think it should be priced the way it is. A very disappointing experience at a restaurant I used to rev about. They have not only reduced their portion size but they have also reduced the Tonkatsu Rouge to nothing more than a large bowl of noodles. The two pieces of pork meat were paper thin and literally about 1/8" each. For $16 dollars a bowl, that's ridiculous. Plenty of other worthy Asian restaurants in the Baton Rouge Area. I get the curry when I go to Boru Ramen. Why is this? First off, the chashu is not like a traditional chashu, which is normally fall apart tender, soft, buttery, salty, and delicious. The chashu at Boru Ramen is sous vided, which leaves it with an awful chewy texture and an unappetizing strong pork flavor. Event the scent of the chashu by itself smells off-putting. I genuinely do not know why they do this. You are given half of an egg in your bowl of ramen. This would be fine if the sizes of eggs were consistent. I've gotten half of an egg that was the size of a quail egg, which was incredibly disappointing. If an egg is teeny, maybe just give both halves at that point. The noodles are excellent. I have no qualms with the noodles. And normally the broth is good, but tonight it was awful, so I decided to write a review finally. You can see the significant separation of oil slick sitting on top of the actual broth. I took two bites and no more. I took a photo to show...it's at least a centimeter of oil. I cannot stress how off putting this was. I've put off leaving a review here, but this bowl of ramen was so upsetting and disappointing. I cannot recommend the ramen. And I have to stress- I'm a huge ramen fan! I eat ramen a lot when I go out of town, and I've been to Japan multiple times. There's tonkotsu in my veins. But never again. Boru is such an adorable ramen spot and I absolutely adore it. First of all, the people are always so kind and every time I've been here, I've had such a pleasant experience. The food is also super good. One of my favorites is the japanese potato salad! Be sure to try it as an app next time you go, it's a perfect starter and just so delicious. I always get the rouge ramen because it's their spicy tonkatsu and it's really good. You can tell the noodles are made in house and it's actually my favorite part of the ramen. My only gripe is I wish they had more toppings or add one (like kimchi) but that's just a minor thing. I love lots of flavor so little extra would top it off! I recently came for the Anime Week and I can't get over what a cool idea this was! I tried the cocktails, potato salad, and a special anime ramen (I didn't get a pic but it was the pork double soba one) and omg the broth was amaaaazing. I LOVED Boru! I've been wanting to come here for awhile and we finally came a few days ago. We got greeted with a sweet smile at the door and seated immediately. Our waiter was phenomenal. We were really looking forward to this local ramen spot, after seeing many slurp-worthy insta posts. Unfortunately we were pretty disappointed - mediocre service and out of several items to make a few of the drinks on the already short cocktail list. Marinated eggs were just normal soft-boiled eggs: no marinade, poorly peeled, and didn't come until the end of our meal (they were out of those too). The ramen itself was pretty boring. The only good things here are the drinks and sugoi fries. I had the sugoi fries when they first opened and enjoyed them. I came back to try the rest of their food but the ramen was so disappointing I just don't really care to go back. I had the black garlic tonkotsu and a friend had the vegan one. I'm not sure where the garlic was in mine and it didn't taste garlicky at all; the broth was a super light colored chicken tasting broth which was confusing. The vegan broth was actually much more garlicky and had a pleasant mushroom flavor. But both broths were severely undercooked; I really expect ramen broth to be good enough to drink and have a depth of flavor from being cooked a long time and this was totally lacking. The "48hr aged eggs" were not marinated at all; totally white and flavorless. The wood ear mushroom was undercooked; too crunchy. My noodles did not feel like real ramen in texture; they were thin like vermicelli, al dente, and stuck together in a cold clump that was difficult to break apart. For the same price, I got way less meat in mine and less flavor overall than other ramen places. Their whiskey smash (japanese smash?) was indeed fantastic though. read more

I heard so many reviews about Bōru and it's even better than I expected! I had the chicken karaage again as an appetizer. I love the kewpie mayo dipping sauce it comes with -- soooo good! The way the chicken is fried is a great balance between crispy and juicy. They are a generous size too if you ask me. Of course I had a Peach Margarita (it was world cocktail day too apparently!). The appetizer was a very good start! The sugoi fries were amazing! But then the rest all went down hill. Both nearby tables sent food back and the concern started. Still being a first time visit we stayed opened minded. Food arrived and it looked decent, the taste... not decent at all! The chicken paitan was so bland, not even a it can be helped so bland. Honesty I explained it to the waiter that it was like dirty dish water with floating noodles. The chicken was so tough and rubber. Needless to say that was sent back. This restaurant was kind of all over the place for me so the 3 stars is an average of the entire experience. First of all I will acknowledge that I was just picking up food to go. But here is my take. The food gets 5 stars. The edamame was salted perfectly and had almost a slight smokey flavor to it that was really tasty. The Japanese style fried chicken I got came with spicy Mayo and a bed of cabbage and I loved it. The chicken wasn't too heavily breaded and it had a soy flavor to it that was obviously pretty unique in terms of typical southern Louisiana fried chicken flavors. The atmosphere gets 3 stars. It wasn't bad. But it was very average. I snapped a few pics you can check out. They had a giant TV at the bar that is great for watching sports, but the bar and the restaurant were very minimally decorated and it had a somewhat unfinished feel to me. The service gets 1 star. The hostess was very nice and helpful, but since to-go orders are placed at the bar most of my interaction was with the bartender. And honestly her attitude was pretty bad. I understand we all have bad days, but when you work in the service industry you have to be able to hide that and just focus on work and your customers. I'm a nurse so I get it, but I can't show up to work and have a bad attitude with my patients no matter what is going on in my personal life. My fiancé and I went to Boru Ramen with a Yelp perk that included a free appetizer of fries and the chicken karaage and OMG they were amazing. I've never had fries with an Asian flare and I may never go back. The fries were dipped and crispy and delicious and didn't even need a sauce because they were so flavorful. Truly unlike anything I've ever had and maybe my favorite fries in this city. The chicken karaage was really good too, but I think the sauce was my favorite part of the app haha. I have to say I think oye WAY better than jinya, and the customer service was 1000x better than Jinya. Service wasn't the fastest but they were very polite and attentive and apologized when we saw delays in service. Went for a solo lunch date during the week. The atmosphere was welcoming. The host was pleasant w/an immediate greeting and a seat to follow. It wasn't very busy, I was the only one sitting at the unattended bar. I waited for my waiter for about 5 minutes. My waiter said oh you want this and pointed to the menu where it read, Rouge Red Tonkotsu, I said well it isn't described how the picture (showing the influencers food and description) looks and she did mention it isn't necessarily on the menu. He said yeah, yeah, it's the same on the menu! I asked w/the crispy chicken? He ensured me that it would be the same. Now if he would have said they couldn't do that, I would have absolutely understood. He took my appetizer order and entree order and put it in at the same time. After receiving my appetizer, the Sugoi fries, my entree came out within 3 minutes. Again I ordered exactly what the influencer said she loves, the crispy garlic Rouge chicken paitan. The bowl I received was not the bowl I showed/described/read to him. I literally took a still frame of her video and showed him. Blaming myself for maybe not being clear, & giving the waiter the benefit of the doubt, I ate it anyway. It wasn't bad, just wasn't what I went there for. The fries were great. The service here is hit and miss. Depends on who is waiting on you as some are attentive and some are not. Have eaten here a few times as a change up to Jinya Ramen. This last go around, the Rouge Red Tonkotsu Ramen was good but the portion was less than what I received in the past (1/2 an egg, less noodles and broth, smaller bowls). The cost also increased to $18 which is more than Jinya where their portions are much larger. We all know food cost have gone up but if you increase cost keep the same portion don't reduce it. Our waiter mentioned that Jinya was their competition. They're not aware that Jinya started the ramen craze in the West Coast and the owners are from Japan. For now, I'll avoid coming here until they decide to go back to the portions they used to serve. I've eaten at the Jinya in Southern California and love them. I can't say that about Boru or the Jinya here. However, at least the Jinya in Baton Rouge provides larger portions and don't skimp on an egg read more

I got the kumamoto black garlic tonkotsu ramen w/o the soft boiled egg. It was so flavorful. They were out of the peach and passion fruit sake so we went with a carafe of the pineapple for $8. Every inch of space is used for seating but it doesn't feel crowded at all. There was ample parking in the parking lots. I'd definitely go again.
