I decided to go to an old favorite, the Boss. This place has a history it's been around forever! It is a family run a small business and the owners are right there with their staff. Something you see often here in Oroville. Both my husband and I got a combo, from the special board. We checked out right about $22 not bad! We had a HUGE amount of fries. I didn't finish mine, I probably should have taken them home they would have reheated great in an air fryer. The girls were insanely friendly, smiling, and constantly cleaning. Went into Boss Burger today with my daughters. We were headed to go swimming and thought we would swing by and get a burger. My 16 year old was rudely yelled from a young girl she couldnt be in the establishment with just a bathing suit bikini top and shorts without a shirt on. 5 minutes later this women enters the establishment with a bathingsuit that was open all the way inches below her belly button expoing all and it looked to be she had pretty much a thong on. Really enjoyed my burger and fries from this place. Was in town for husbands work and I had to try. I got the smallest burger, I think it was called a Jr. burger, and for me it was plenty with everything on it, they also have 3 larger sized burgers for those with a bigger stomach. But if you intend to eat fries with that, watch out, you may order too much. A SMALL fry easily is enough for 2 people. We felt terrible wasting some. Was suggested this place when riding through Oroville. Ordered a Big Boss with mushrooms. The burger came quickly even with a decent crowd inside the small dining area. First, the burger patty itself was perfectly cooked, a half pound of well seasoned, tasty beef. The veggies seemed fresh and well proportioned, and the mushrooms were a perfect touch. Not too greasy like other places. If you order a combo it comes with a ton of tasty fries. I have yet to try the milkshakes. That's next on my list. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The building is small and run down, but I always order to go. The parking lot is also small and sometimes difficult to maneuver. So there...you've been warned of the few imperfections. Best fries in town and portions are ginormous. We go on 99 cent burger day occasionally and can feed entire family for about $10. $14 if we get sodas. (4 burgers, family fry and two sodas). Burgers are okay. I prefer to make my own. So I get them to cook it plain and then use the bar to put what I want on. When they make them I think they come with lettuce, pickle, catsup, meat. Which is not my favorite. I love their "secret sauce" over catsup and I'm sorry but tomatoes should be on a burger. So, order plain and you can doctor it up to make it amazing! I've been going here almost all my life and I am not impressed. The food here is actually of a suprisingly low quality, which is supposed to be made up by large quantity. The burger meat is always bland and charred-tasting, and everything else just seem generic about the burgers there. Plus, the fries are almost NEVER good, I usually throw away the entire order of them, since they're stale and greasy. One last thing, that's probably hardest to fix, is the people. No to be rude, but it's hard to work up an appetite if I'm seated at a table across from a whale and a greasy hobo. There clearly aren't any standards for restaurant etiquette there, so if you don't want to be grossed out by the gross smell or presence there, it's best to go on an off-hour, or a week day. So sad we will not be going back. We have a large family and have been in the area for 60 years. I was born in the 80s and grew up eating a Boss burger almost every Sunday. Now this has become a tradition with my own children. We don't eat out much these days, but when we do the kids really look forward to a 99cent burger. We have not been to Boss in months partially because of the severe rudeness of two of the teenage (or immature) girls working there. Today we had a large party as usual consisting of four different families, residing In four separate households. (This probably seems irrelevant for burger shack review but kept reading) My family used one coupon (sent out to each household once every three months) to purchase regularly priced menu items. One of those three families tried to use their coupon and were verbally assaulted by the same teenage girls. One girl in particular came out (name starts with D) from the back and said that the owner Tom Martin insists that only one person per "party" be able to use that coupon. I said "oh, I'm sorry you must be confused, we all do not reside in the same household" per the wording on the coupon. This teenage girl against one person with a litigation background, one ICU nurse, and myself she insisted on not honoring the coupon, and not allowing the two girls working the register to honor the coupon as well. This all while there is a line out the door and the condiments bar is empty. I finally agree that I will personally take the matter up with the owner and we expect that most likely our food was spit in....It gets better....... Generally.... Like every Sunday for 30 years there has been peanuts on the tables...but like I said have not been there in a while so who knows right....My 8 year old asks for some and the same girl says....you can't have those now....he said he wanted to punch her....so glad he did not! Then a bit later he walks up and asks for a water cup.....keep in mind there are ten of us with water at the table....one of the girls tells him "it costs 27 cents". Moral of the story....food is OK... Good value for 99 cents. Back in the 80's and even 90's awesome, new ownership (son) not so great, teenage girls really bad! Coupon policy's, lookout here comes some lawsuits "false advertising" for example. Wait time generally 15 mins plus....I'm sorry to say that word travels fast in a small town. Makes me sad to see another of our towns iconic businesses headed downhill FAST! read more

I lived in Oroville back in the early 70s thru the early 80s and I have to say that even though we now live in the South Bay Area, this place for us is still the burger of burgers! The flavor has never changed. My wife's mom still lives in Oroville so from time to time we go to Oroville and when we do we always stop by the Boss. How in the world do they get the meat to taste so good??!! I remember when I went to Oroville High (75-78), every chance I had I would walk down to the boss. The Boss definitely deserves four stars. I've been coming here since I was little, and nothing beats a Boss burger and shake after running around by the river or going to the Fish Hatchery. I definitely reccommend keeping it simple, as some of the other things I've tried have been small portions and just not that great. The burgers are where it's at.
