The entire rotisserie chicken craze that is entrenched in American culture began with Boston Market (formerly Boston Chicken) in the early 90s. Before Boston Market's popularity, no grocery store in the US sold a ready-to-eat rotisserie chicken. So, as I sat in 1 of the only 15 remaining Boston Markets in the world, forcefully chewing rubbery chicken along with sides that felt more fit for a middle school cafeteria than a restaurant, I couldn't help but ask myself, what happened to Boston Market? Let's turn the clock back to 1985, when they were founded in Newton, Massachusetts as "Boston Chicken." Their focus was solely on quality rotisserie chicken and homestyle sides as an on the go convenience meal, a unique niche in an era where unhealthy fast food was dominating the market. Consumers couldn't get enough. Sales went nuclear. In 1994, Costco and Kroger were the first grocery stores to ride the wave and began selling hot-and-ready rotisserie chickens as a loss leader. In a tale seemingly older than time, they began to put profits over customers. The goal became one thing: Expand, expand, expand. They rebranded in 1995 to "Boston Market," as they expanded their menu to include turkey, meatloaf, ham, etc. Their original focus on quality food at affordable prices transformed into mediocre food at the highest price the customer was willing to pay. They used to make everything fresh in house, and hoped consumers wouldn't notice when they switched to precooked frozen sides. Being on the front lines for rotisserie chicken reviews in 2025, I felt I had to make the pilgrimage to pay my respects to a former titan and godfather of the chicken industry. I made the 1 hour 7 minute commute, taking 2 trains and a bus, to the only operating Boston Market left in New York City in Ozone Park. When I reached the promised land that is in a strip mall alongside a A&B Laundromat and a run down CVS, a "now open" sign was floating in the wind. I walked into an empty restaurant that felt like a time portal to 2007. A beat up tile floor, chairs with faux-leather seat cushions, and red tiled walls that had seen better days. It was me and only 2 other customers. I ordered a half chicken and 2 sides ($14.49), along with a side item sampler ($11.99) as I wanted to try everything. I got my beloved bird along with mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, corn, cilantro rice, cornbread, and plantains. Boston Market sells plantains??? As I tapped to pay, the employee handed me a coupon with a huge smile. I inspected it with a look of confusion on my face as I read it. "Buy 1 get 1 free, Individual meal & drink" and in small text "Only good Mon-Thursday, Good only at Ozone Park Location. Expires Aug 2025." I couldn't help but laugh. My first thought was "I need to frame this." The meal was exactly what I was expecting. The chicken was dry and rubbery, which is likely due to improper thawing and overcooking. The mac & cheese, once a beloved favorite of Boston Market consumers, tasted like it was straight out of the Kraft mac & cheese box. The plantains were atrocius... I was shocked when they even had plantains as an option. Boston Market was a shell of its former self. As I walked out, I saw a sign on the door that was no bigger than a 3x5 notecard that read "Boston Market gift cards are not accepted at this location. We are now Ozone Rotisseries, sorry." This sparked my passionate curiosity all over again. So is this not even a Boston Market? Is this legal? Did I completely waste my entire Saturday coming out here? So many questions... I'm happy I went and paid my respects, even if the former chicken titan is on life support. Boston Market changed American culture forever. They made it so I have a cheap, convenient, high protein meal at my disposal damn near everywhere. We also need to put some respect on their name as they are pioneers of the fast casual restaurants that are so popular today. The are even wearing Boston Market aprons. They didnt accept my Boston Market gift card because they claim to be Rotise Chicken. I was directed to a small sign in the window with the new name. I decided to have Boston market today it's been a while and I've been hearing of several locations closing . I remember when my kids were younger we used to come here a lot and dine in and I have fond memories of eating good food and being together. Well this place certainly changed I should have known when there's a huge sign outside saying "now open " usually this is a sign of a dying store . When you walk in they have two workers on their phone and they don't seem to want to be there . I remember the old staff was welcoming and accommodating always I even got to know the manager and she always asked "how's the kids "? I ordered the half chicken white with a side of stuffing and potatoes . I decided to dine in because I was hungry and didn't wanna wait till I got home . The place was empty and it has a dead vibe there's very little life left here . On to the food the chicken was so dry I had a piece of two . The potatoes and the stuffing was not good and not even hot . I barely ate so I turned to the cornbread for the save but they was stale and dry . I left hungry and spent 23.00 so lesson learned I won't be back and I predict this location will close within the year . It's a shame the fond memories I have of this location and Boston market as a whole are just that memories . Wow.... We used to love Boston Market... but the food was not only cold and soggy it was terrible, and under cooked... then the corn bread and gravy was stale. Almost $100 on uber eats was spent, they took almost a whole hour to get us our food and it was such a disappointment. Barely any bbq sauce on the meat loaf and ribs. Then the ribs were so tough and covered in fat. The meatloaf tasted like cat food!!! The vegetables were so weird tasting and bland that you couldn't tell which veggie was which by the taste. To make it worse- We asked for utensils and got none, the ice melted in our drinks... this was the worse food ever- looks nothing like the pictures. This Boston Market has pretty decent food but the customer service is hit-or-miss. Some of the more seasoned employees are extremely friendly and will treat you with respect but then there are younger employees who are only there for a check and will surely make you feel like you are imposing on their life just by ordering. I've been coming here for over 3 years and came here today on Thanksgiving to having a wait for 30 minutes for turkey. What is that all about? I usually tip the employees that make my plate and cash me out, but not with the nasty attitudes and paltry servings. We just picked up the heat and serve Thanksgiving meals. The process was smooth and fast - all Covid precautions were followed - masks, social distancing and limited # of people permitted to enter at a time. I had made a mistake with the date and expected to spend a long time to resolve. Ralph was running the place like a well oiled machine and quickly helped us. I am not a fan of their salads, so I'd advise you to skip them. Chicken noodle soup is good (with nice hearty pieces of noodle & chicken in a great broth). Buuuuuuuuut, the Tortilla soup is 10x better. The spicy kick it has is great (note: it's not always available, so get it when you can). The carver sandwiches are filling and homey in taste. The brisket one is my favorite. Buuuuuuuuut, if you want a real comfort tasting sandwich, then you've got to get the Sliders. They're a great snack or appetizer server. For individual meals, avoid the meatloaf it's horrible. The turkey is not bad, and the gravy makes it better. The pot pies are really good IMO. But, Boston Market's bread-n-butter is--and always will be--their rotisserie chicken. Whether you like dark or white pieces of meat, their chicken is always juicy. Whether you get it as a whole chicken (family meals), or individual meals...you won't be disappointed. If you're looking at catering, then the family meals or their catering menu will be the better options. For sides, the following are the best: - cinnamon apples (these are amazing btw, especially when paired with ice-cream) - Garlic dill potatoes - loaded mash potatoes - mac-n-cheese - vegetable stuffing - green beans The mixed-vegetables side is horrible. It's usually either too soggy, or tastes bad. In closing, don't forget to enjoy your cornbread. When I asked for a cup for water the associate at the told me that "The water only comes outta dat faucet (behind her as she pointed)!" No filtered water from the fountain machine. It's been awhile since I last dined at this Boston Market. My previous experiences have always been good to say the least. After reading some of the other reviewers' remarks made be think that this BM has changed. Thankfully Shianna was there to greet me and she dispelled all the negative remarks that I've read. Her service and disposition was excellent. She let me know the chicken would be ready in 10 mins and at 10 mins she called me to fix my order while trying to satisfy another customer who was having an issue with his meal. My husband usually orders take out from this location, the food for the most part is pretty decent, but lately their potatoes are dry and hard. I don't know if the potatoes are being left out for a long period of time Or they are being over cooked. The first I ordered the potatoes they were dried and some of the potatoes were a little crispy on the skin. This time around the potatoes were so hard my fork was having a hard time going through, when I finally scooped up the potatoe it was hard to chew. Normally the experience is great and so is the food. But today it wasn't. First, I asked for dark meat and because I didn't understand the guy got half chicken for an extra $1 EACH. This was two orders. Second, I asked for Cream Spinach and MIXED veggies. WITHOUT being told they are called "Premium Sides" and cost an extra $.25 each. I wasn't even aware until I received the bill. That has always been a regular side. Now it's called "Premium". Worst part the menu doesn't even tell what is a regular or premium side. Number of visits: Maybe a dozen times. This location is close to my home so it's a reliable site if I want Boston Market. It's spacious with many seats to dine in and they have bathrooms. I've never had a real problem with this location. The only problem I could think of is, sometimes, during dinner time, when there's a rush and long lines, and the waiting time to order could be five to ten minutes. But that says something. It says that they are a go-to place for the surrounding neighborhood; people who come in to take out food for their families. Management looks as if they are competent. Sometimes, I see them cleaning the front tables themselves and greeting guests. I would dare call them a model location. The food is good. During my most recent visit, the chicken was juicy and delicious. They have a hot sauce that's mixed with barbecue sauce. It was quite a condiment. Mashed potatoes with gravy and mac & cheese served to be satisfying sides, along with their cornbread, which is an added guilty pleasure. Their food seemed to be fresh and of quality suitable for serving and impressing. They would make you wait for fresh food. Usually I wouldn't bother reviewing chain restaurant, because people already know what their in for, but I really didn't enjoy this meal at all. My girlfriend is a vegetarian so she orders all sides, and its the same price as a standard meal. My ribs where greasy and disgusting (wish I had gotten chicken.) Mac and cheese was good, but the potato wedges were cold and the texture seems like they were undercooked. We tend to drop in during the week here. I know its a franchise but i really like their sweet potato casserole!! Its soooo good. Well anywho...we come here and everyone is very friendly..well expect one of the managers. The ladies serving the food are great, they are patient with the customers and friendly. The young guy that works there with the light eyes is awesome. Now the food, the sides are good. The spinach is very good and so is the sweet potatoes. I noticed they eliminated the "loaded mash" and replaced it with a garlic mash. I prefer the garlic mash, it tastes wayyy better. The Pot Pie is good I only eat some of the crust, the BF eats the filing lol. Now the chicken is good although some days it's off. Not bad just not as great as it should be. I have enjoyed this Boston market in the past. They seemed to be the most consistent. However I went there on the Friday after New Year's Day and the food was terrible. I had the 1/4 chicken and rib meal. Everything was soggy on the bottom like it had been left out all day. I ate it because that's what I do but I feel almost traumatized every time I think of the meal .I haven't been able to go back there since because lose my appetite whenever I think of Boston Market. OK, I admit it, I love chicken. I have been eating at this chain for years and have never had a bad meal. The chicken is always moist and tasty although once in a while I have asked for another meat option when my wing looked too crisp or the thigh looked too scrawny. The sides are always fresh and move fairly quickly. I think they cook the vegetables too much but hey, this is a chain. The 'mac n cheese' is well, cheesy; the sweet potatoes (yams) with marshmallows are awesome; the spinach is delicious; the corn is sweet and tasty. Other options are acceptable but not my favorites. They have new food choices and have expanded the menu. So stop in and see what else they have. read more
