Everything at this place needs major improvement! I'm pretty annoyed that I spent $80 there and food service was horrible. I had the mistake of walking in here for a family Sunday brunch with 2kids before going to the movies at Cinemart Cinemas. Service: no one greeting guests or walking them to a table with menus. I waited 10 min sitting down before anyone even noticed us in the largest booth available there. The entire time we were there, not one glass of water was provided. I had to flag someone down to get menus and the young man nicely came over and took juice and coffee orders. He was kind enough to apologize for that. I wanted the "special flavored lattes" they had pictured at the table but ofc that was not available there. Food: I ordered my favorite brunch menu - Huevos Ranchero and it was the worst I've ever had! Like who the hell came up with that recipe! There was NO sauce/salsa, half the plate covered in pinto beans (unseasoned) with melted cheese! When I asked what happened with the salsa and sauce that comes with the mean, the waitress says oh she forgot - like wtf that's part of the dish! She came back with a side of store bought salsa usually for a side of chips! So disappointing! The thing is that the place was not even packed or loud. No idea why guests are overlooked. And the simplest food to make - plain toasted bagel with cream cheese.. they couldn't even spread it in the bagel. They have my daughter a block of cheese instead for her to do herself. read more

The place is truly the village, think of it as the Cheers version of diners. You walk in and greeted by Rose, her son George, Jorge the waiter and the entire staff. The place has had an esthetic overhaul down to the bathroom. The menu has been condensed to showcase their best sellers and introduced new items to their menu. I just live this neighborhood jewel! It's a small diner near me that has a menu as larhe as a place three times the size! The portions are plentiful, the food is excellent and customer service is great! If you're looking for pretty much anything that you can think of, you can find it on this menu. Give them a try they deliver in the area pretty quickly and will be happy to accommodate substitutions or change changes some with an up charge, but others not. Honestly it's been over a decade since I've been to Kew Gardens. And I'm glad to say, Kew Gardens hasn't changed much. It's still as charming as I remember. Today I came "for business" and arrived an hour early for my appointment. The sky was a gloomy gray, a chill in the air, almost promising rain. So, I thought a nice black coffee (two sugars) would get me primed and ready for my meeting. I walked in search of a Dunkin' and, as I jay-walked across Lefferts, realized I had narrowly missed it. Fortunately there was a diner on my side of the block. And I had time enough to sit and chill and maybe eat. Easy choice. I'd rather support small businesses 100% and who doesn't love a good diner? Fortunately this was one of the good ones. I was greeted as soon as I came in (my glasses fogging over my mask) and was told to take a seat anywhere. Within three minutes my table was wiped clean, a menu was put in my hand, and coffee brought to my table. I also ordered two eggs over medium and bacon. This came with toast and wonderfully cooked home fries (sautéed green peppers and onions included). It didn't take long at all to get my food. I was served extra coffee and water. And I left there feeling glad and energized with just enough time to make my 11:30 appointment. They were delivered cold and rare, with one pitiful green pepper sliver. They were absolutely terrible. - Water and coffee refills never came. Here is a REALLY annoying situation, my situation. Both server and busboy asked me twice about refills on each, I gladly accepted, neither ever came, nor did my extra napkin. - Somehow, my toast took longer than my meal to arrive. Usually they arrive at the same time, around the same time, or first. I received the two simple slices close to five minutes after. It destroys the whole egg yolk dipping relationship because the eggs are cold and the whole balance is kaput. - Small portion of over cooked corned beef hash, about tho circumference of the average fallen maple leaf. I reached across the table and removed an indivual-size serving of butter from the Fiestaware plate it sat upon. Unpeel. Rub. Now, dive, Brutus. DIVE. I looked into your eyes as my greased palm took the most fantastic voyage up your leg. "For your bread basket, my sweet!" Back at your apartment, you showed me more of the routine and we enjoyed a filling breakfast in bed. We didn't leave for an entire week. I called out of work. You were unemployed. You don't come here to be wowed by gourmet food. You come here to rest your weary tush and fill up on some standard fare. Portions are fair and prices are typical. Service is somewhat indifferent but you get your food rather fast (depending on what you order, I suppose). They only had one booth that could seat more than four people from what I surveyed, but don't expect to wait for a seat if your party is less than 5. read more

I ordered through seamless and the delivery never showed. I contacted the diner an hour after I ordered to see what happened and was told my food was successfully delivered 30 mins ago. I explained that was a mistake and the food never arrived. I requested a refund and placed an order elsewhere. I received a call back from the diner telling me they would not issue a refund and the delivery driver gave my order to someone that they claim "knew my apartment number". I assured him I never got the order but they refused a refund. This is a horrible way to conduct business and treat customers. Luckily I called seamless and got the refund. I am extremely patient when it comes to food. If an order takes two hours so-be-it, in return I expect a plate/dish/order to be served with consideration and effort. I really don't get why people are bashing the servers at Village Diner. They do take a bit to get an order or process a bill, but they're super sweet and nice. The servers, damn me for not knowing their names, are just delightful. My coffee mug never goes empty unless I want it to. A glass of water is placed quickly on the table. Menus find their way to my table promptly. Now, I've had brunches throughout the city... fancy and casual and there was never a time that I didn't wish for a nice bottle of ketchup and tabasco to pile on to my plate. My point being... this is dinner food... NOT PER SE. Some places excel at coffee, others pancakes, others waffles. Village diner, to me, stands out with their breakfast wraps and waffle fries. A mound of egg wrapped in an insecurity blanket of cheese, sausage, and more cheese. Really, what could be better... oh yeah dumping a bunch of ketchup and tabasco all over it... to taste. My Beep and I go at least once a week because they have good waffles, they're close by, they're friendly and welcoming, and the food is good diner food. If you live in Kew Gardens, you've walked by the Village Diner. You've seen people eating indoors and they appear to be enjoying their food. And, for all I know, maybe they are enjoying it. But I don't. I've eaten here 5 or 6 times in the 3.5 years I've lived in Kew Gardens. I haven't been happy with the food a single time. Not even for breakfast. The main problem is that the food has no flavor. Or a dish seems to be missing a key ingredient. Or it's overcooked. But mostly, just no flavor. In addition, they're often out of something or unable to make it. A few times I've ordered waffles only to be told that the waffle iron isn't working. A diner with no waffles? What's that about? But when they actually did have waffles, I found out why they didn't. They were actually terrible. The inside was raw; the outside was burned. OK, the waffle iron was too hot. So, I sent the waffles back. Out come more, only worse. But, you're thinking, why did you give the place 2 stars? That sounds like a one star kind of place. Which it does. However, the manager and servers are about the nicest people you could hope to meet. They're quick to smile and make you feel comfortable. And the service is good. I can only think, as the place seems to be fairly busy, that they cook to the taste of their regular customers. And you can't fault them for that! It's just not to my taste at all. read more

Maybe something happens to them between the diner and my apartment 3 blocks away, but they're always mushy. They're disgusting. Then I have to throw them out and I really don't like doing that. My husband usually gets a burger platter and is mostly happy with it. Their Spinach Pie is good...sometimes. The Greek salad that comes with it has been consistently good, I have to say that.
