Classic old school NY diner you don't find anymore. I've never had a bad meal here. Service is consistently good.

We happened to be here by accident. Hubby wanted to take Mommy and me to a cafe that he saw while passing by weeks ago, but he said the restaurant looked different then. We ate here anyway. Mommy had a spinach omelet, and I had a spinach mushroom omelet. They were generous on the spinach. That's a plus. They flipped the omelet! Awesome! Hubby had a burger. I told him that they made quite a good omelet here, surprise surprise! Mommy and I finished our meals! Wow! Hubby finished his burger too. We took home the potatoes. I gained a new appreciation for The Briarwood Cafe today. There was an issue that came up, and Alejandro, the owner, and Natalie, who oversees the daytime, really showed great character to resolve thigs with compassion and care. That said, in this little quaint neighborhood, the Briarwood Cafe has always been a bit of a sleeper. It might look small and unassuming, but once you go in and get a taste of what they have to offer, you discover a bit of a treasure. In the five years I've been going there, things have been pretty consistent. The food is usually pretty good, and the service ... well, it can be hit or miss depending on who you get as your server. If you're lucky enough to be there on a day Lourdes works, she is the absolute best. There seems to be one who doesn't seem all that fond of us, or particularly friendly when we go in. It's fine. It's become a running joke between me and my husband on our way over. But, good diner fare is often hard to find, and it's nice to know it can be found at the BC. I mean, as iconic as its neighborhood competitor, the Flagship, was (they closed down a week ago), there was (and is) a charm, and a consistency, that the BC had that made it our go-to place for waffles (Jayson's favorite) and a good omelet, with the good fries. And, even the servers who seemed to be a bit rough around the edges add to the charm and colorfulness of the experience there. The one thing that the BC does better than most is their meatloaf. About eight months ago, I went on a quest to find a decent meatloaf in the area. I'm pretty picky when it comes to things like that. And I tried hard. I ordered from places near and far. They were all awful. Like, two bites and throw it out awful. Who would have thought that the golden winner would be found at the BC? I'm really hard to please on this. When you grow up in a Jewish family, you learn early on what good meatloaf is. Now, I can't imagine ordering it from anywhere else. Is it pristine and polished and perfectly fine-tuned? No. But, it's exactly what it sets out to be. A great place to get a good breakfast at reasonable prices or a burger for lunch, or a quick bite for dinner. Cool mom and pops style diner. It's on the corner so the place is set up long way with counter top seating, which is great in a diner, and two people booths on the other side. I want to say there are two four top tables right in the front but it's not a big place but it has a cozy feel to it. The young lady who took my takeout order was great. The menu was your basic diner menu. I was there for breakfast which they serve all day and there was plenty to pick from. I had an omelette which came with toast and potatoes. I also had a stack of silver dollar pancakes. Big portions and everything was good. Omelette was a little salty but otherwise good. This is the place for a good breakfast at an affordable price. I had two fried eggs, corned beef hash and grits, plus whole wheat toast. Absolutely delicious from the first bite to the last. Grits are not the usual New York breakfast choice, so when a place can make them well, then I'm hooked. The grits were perfection, not runny or chunky, the absolute correct balance. The waitperson was polite, and she stopped by to check if anything was needed and again to refill my coffee (free of course). The single row of booths offer private dining and the old time diner feeling. Not sure what happened today, since I have ordered here many times and the food and service were good and quick (my faves being any omelette platters, the caesar salad, and the meatloaf platter with mash), but today's order was far from good. I ordered the meatloaf platter which came with meatloaf, corn and carrots, mashed potatoes, and soup. Well, the soup (vegetable soup) was so salty/concentrated I had to spit it out, and I thought it could be drinkable if diluted, but no, that didnt work, so i threw it out. The meatloaf itself was fine, as were the corn and carrots, but the mashed potatoes (usually the part i look forward to, was really salty also! =( ) Overall I was not happy with my order, and now Im wondering if i should go back at all... it's like, do i need to add to my order "Do not oversalt the mashed potatoes and don't give me a salty soup lacking in flavor?" I normally get the waffle or French toast for breakfast because they are reliable. He gets an omelet or egg sandwiches. Is it the best food around? Probably not. The service? I like the younger waitress or the older gentleman. The older waitress and I just do not mix for some reason. This morning I was with a Prospetive student eating here. The plate had extra large portions, it was served by somebody's mother with love. A lady who appeared homeless came in talking soft. They handed her two menus (to go and sit down). She looked and asked if there was a breakfast special. The waitress replied no, but we do have a lunch special. The lady put the menu down and left. She later came back and said she didn't have any money. The owner/main waitress/ Mother/ owner type said we can give you some soup. The Lady said yes! Then they come out and give her soup, a large bagel sandwich with egg, bacon cheese, & a dinner roll to go with her large size soup. This place deserves your business beyond the good food and great prices. Not sure if they are religious, but they definitely got me to thinking what power inside of them compelled them toward this type of humanity/selflessness. They called the lady Love! I'm wondering how this place got such a high review on Yelp. Service: I have to say the service was very neglectful and gave a little bit of an attitude. Food: Corn Beef Hash - This dish looked like regurgitation and it tasted like it too. The only thing I liked about dish was the toast and that's really not much. The chicken pasta soup was the only thing good about this place. If this was the last restaurant on earth, I would starve to death! Let me tell you why! I wanted a chicken gyro without the sauce. MOST reputable restaurants use chicken breast. The meat was unrecognizable. I had no idea what is was and neither did the staff. The older lady knew what I wanted but didn't bother to correct the older man taking my order. When I asked her why she didn't say anything, she shrugged her shoulders as if she didn't care. When the cashier asked how was the food, I responded horrible. Her response to me was that thru normally do not recommend what I ordered. I work nearby and typically order of Saturday 3 weeks ago they're just not answering the phone or picking and hanging up so I stop on my way in and place an order to be delivered. The following week I order delivery burnt sausage. This week it's burnt silver dollars and hair on my eggs. Who in their right mind makes pancakes that are clearly burnt and hide them on the bottom to sell. The manager just replies with I'm sorry what can I say. I will never order from them. Food is great! It is however a bit small - But the service & the food makes up for it. When I first moved to the area I used to go to the Flagship Diner but soon realized that the Briarwood Cafe was sooo much better without all they hype of Flagship. Every hood needs a good reliable diner that serves cheap breakfast all hours of the day and for this side of Queens, Briarwood Cafe fits the bill. For years I thought Flagshit Diner (as Raymond H. rightfully names it) was the only option but good old Yelp steered me in the right direction. I had a hankering for pancakes and my order came with 3 pancakes the size of my head. The Canadian bacon side was typical (glorified ham disguised as Canadian bacon) but it was nice option to have. The BFs over easy eggs were perfect oozing with yolk to dip the buttery toasted bread in. The sausage, although *gasp* deep fried was surprisingly crisp on the outside yet moist on the inside. The home fries were so fluffy that I found myself ignoring the pancakes to finish them. Yes, it's only breakfast - how hard is that to make? If you've dined at the other options in the hood, you'd be surprised how many don't know how to make a simple breakfast. Had breakfast here for the first time today. Thought we would try something new instead of "Flagshit" (Flagship Diner) across the street. I wouldn't say this place is a heaven on a plate nor would I say that it's really bad. But then, it's hard to screw up breakfast food (it happens, eg. Flagshit). I'd say given the choice, go here instead of Flagshit. I got the sunnyside up eggs, bacon and sausage. Not a big fan of their home fries (I think they seasoned it with sazon). They used to have the worse female waitress ever before but she thankfully got fired. The food is good and the price is way better than Flagship. You know, this place would be great if it wasn't for their slackers. I mean, why pay em if they are just going to stand around and let one person work. I don't know what was going on that day but they only had one lady working the floor for like 30 minutes. Food took forever to get to our plates and there was several people pretending to work. You know what I'm taking about, let me just look like I'm doing something important but I'm not routine. I was so irritated and annoyed at how long we had to wait to get served, get our food, and ultimately get our check. We were there for over an hour, OVER AN HOUR!!! That is unheard of in the restaurant world. It's a diner, diners are suppose to be fast, not slow. And to make things worse, my food was cold. Not warm, not room temperature, cold. The poor waitress saw my annoyance and apologized for being the only one working. I commend her for remembering all of our orders (the whole dining room) and feel that she should find a better place to work because obviously no one gives a shit. read more
