I genuinely could not recommend this vet any less. They are kind in person, but all they care about is extracting as much money as possible from you. I came to this vet with my dog Lacey, who was 14 years old at the time, after I had moved to Boston for Law School. I really liked the vet, so I kept going. After a few months of us being in Boston, they diagnosed her with kidney disease and eventually diagnosed her with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. They placed her on prescription food, but when Lacey eventually started to reject this food, the only alternative they provided was a food that cost about $100 for a two-week supply. They kept insisting that I get my prescriptions through their online pharmacy, which upsold every product (I was able to find them cheaper elsewhere online, like on Chewy, but it was difficult for me to get them to send a physical prescription so I could obtain them anywhere other than THEIR pharmacy). We kept going back when I could afford to do tests, and at one visit, I made a comment to a vet tech about how we have not been able to come in very often or follow all of the medications because of how extremely expensive everything is. The vet tech was very sympathetic, especially because Lacey was really sick, so she told us to wait a second and then came back with information about a "Complete Care Plan." I should have known it was too good to be true, but I truly trusted this vet because I had gone to them for a while and they were always very nice, although I should not have. They sold the plan to me as a cost-saving measure, where I would pay $60 a month, and this would cover one vet visit a month in addition to some other things. I thought this was a great deal because I was already going to the vet for an appointment with the vet techs at least once a month for Lacey's Librela shot (for arthritis). With this plan, I was able to get an appointment with the vet instead, who was able to give me more information on the status of Lacey's kidney disease and continually evaluate her cognitive decline. Lacey's condition only got worse and worse, to the point that she was unable to control her bladder and her bowel movements. She would often forget who my roommates were, even though she had known them for a while, and would lash out violently. There were multiple instances where she lashed out and bit me, and as she started to forget who even I am, it became really difficult for me to uphold a good quality of life for her. We discussed this with the vet (who was extremely uncomfortable about the subject and would not even look me in the eye), and they basically just handed me a business card for a 3rd party euthanasia service. After doing some research, calling around to some places, and taking Lacey to all of her favorite spots, I eventually made the decision with my family that it was time. I informed the vet that Lacey had passed away, and her remains were hand-delivered to the vet's office for me to pick up, so they were very aware of what was going on. The vet's office seemed to be very kind at first, and they sent me a nice card with the signatures of a bunch of staff. But after Lacey died, they continued to bill me monthly for her Complete Care Plan. I was really confused about this because I am very on top of budgeting (living on student loans, I have to be), and I paid the invoice in full every time I visited. It has been over 2 months, and they still continue to bill me for this plan. When I asked them about this, they informed me that the Complete Care Plan is for a period of 12 months, so I am obligated to pay for those months even if my dog has passed. When I tried to explain to them that my dog is dead and therefore no longer receiving services, they insinuated that I was trying to "cheap out" of paying my bill, and they continuously repeated how I have to "pay for the services I have received," even though I paid my invoice religiously every visit. Staff were incredibly rude, called me "emotional," said I "don't know how companies work," and completely refused to help. I asked if I could transfer the plan to another dog (one who is alive since my girlfriend recently adopted a dog), and they refused since "the plan is attached to the dog." But my dog has been dead for months, and I am still being billed. This place is a scam. Avoid at all costs.

Unfortunately, despite the hospital's reputation, we repeatedly felt that our concerns were dismissed and that communication with specialists was unnecessarily difficult. During one hospitalization, our pet experienced what was later believed to be a neurological event, possibly a stroke. When we visited, we told the staff that he was behaving abnormally and appeared weak in very specific and concerning ways. Our observations were dismissed. He was subsequently discharged barely able to walk, despite having been fully mobile beforehand. After calling the hospital and bringing him back, we paid for a neurology consultation. Neurology recommended medications, but despite having paid for the consultation, we initially could not speak directly with the neurologist and had to push repeatedly for a conversation. I understand that consulting specialists are busy and that internal medicine may remain the primary service, but when an animal has experienced a potentially life-altering neurological event, being effectively unavailable to the owners is unacceptable. I worry that another owner might not have felt able to advocate as forcefully. Later, our pet developed episodes of staring, circling, and other abnormal behavior. We returned to the emergency department because we were concerned about seizures. We were told that it was probably not a seizure and that the symptoms could be gastrointestinal. We repeatedly explained that he was behaving very differently from his baseline, but we did not feel that our account was being taken seriously. After further discussion, we were sent home with Keppra (anti-seizure medication) and instructed to monitor him. They also told us not to start the medication for now, and wait to see if he had another event - which made sense. He had another episode, we started the medication, and he has not had another episode since. That may or may not prove the episodes were seizures, but the most troubling part of the experience was how consistently unheard we felt. I recognize that veterinary hospitals are often understaffed and overworked, and I have tried to give Angell the benefit of the doubt. However, these were not isolated frustrations. They formed a repeated pattern of poor communication, inflexibility, and failure to listen carefully to an owner who knew that something was wrong with his animal. Anyone considering Angell should be prepared to advocate very firmly, ask direct questions, and insist on communication with the clinicians involved in their pet's care. Based on our experiences, I no longer believe that Angell is necessarily the best or only option for specialty and emergency veterinary care in the region.

Recently, I called to reschedule two appointments--one for June 29 at 8:00 a.m. for one of my dogs and another for July 10 for my other dog. On June 29, I drove 1 hour and 20 minutes from the North Shore to Watertown for the 8:00 a.m. appointment. When I arrived, I was told by the front desk that there was no appointment in their system and that they could not see my dog. It is possible that I missed the email confirmation, and if so, I accept responsibility for that. However, I know I scheduled the appointment over the phone, and what disappointed me most was not the scheduling error itself, but the complete lack of willingness to help resolve the situation. I explained how important the appointment was, yet the receptionist was dismissive and unhelpful. Rather than trying to accommodate us or offer a reasonable solution, she simply suggested that I come back a few hours later or on another day, despite the fact that I had just driven 1 hour and 20 minutes to get there. I also felt that the staff made it seem as though the mistake was entirely mine. To make matters worse, I later learned that the July 10 appointment for my other dog had also been canceled without my knowledge or authorization. I never requested that it be canceled, and no one contacted me to confirm or notify me of this change. After being a loyal client for more than seven years, I expected much better customer service. Mistakes happen, but what matters is how they are handled. Unfortunately, I left feeling that my concerns were dismissed rather than addressed. Because of this experience, I no longer feel I can trust this practice with my pets' care. My advice to anyone scheduling an appointment by phone is to ask for the name of the person you speak with. It may save you from making a long trip only to be told that your appointment does not exist.
