Bot Bakery has exceeded my expectations! I ordered a custom cake for my sister who is lactose intolerant and has a gluten sensitivity. Ive only been able to find limited selections in the past and I was so grateful to have found Bot Bakery in time for her birthday! All of their desserts are vegan & gluten free and there is a WIDE variety of options to choose from - even lavender, bell pepper (!) and ginger I ended up ordering a 6" lavender cake with blueberry compote & cream cheese frosting. Oh. My. God. It was phenomenal!! The cake itself was so moist and rich. The lavender was not too subtle and the blueberry compote paired perfectly with it. The cream cheese frosting was a little sweet for me but it was still a great addition to the cake. The decor was beautiful and I could tell that the cake was made with alot of love. The cake was a hit for everyone in my family regardless of their dietary restrictions. Betty was an absolute pleasure to work with. She responded quickly to me via email or text and was accommodating to any changes I had with the delivery time. Betty is the absolute best! I ordered a custom cake for my girlfriend's birthday and it was amazing!! Truly the best vegan, gluten-free cake I've ever had in my entire life. Fantastic taste and texture for both the chocolate cake and the pink frosting. And the gold flakes on top were a very pleasant surprise. It was easy to place an order and pick up the finished product. I'm also grateful that the cake could be made without any nuts. This is my favorite gluten free bakery for the adventurous. Every visit will take you on a whirlwind of flavors from around the world. My favorite is the lemon yogurt cake. It is tart and sweet. The shortbread cookies are always filled with something delightful like rose, lemon or lavender. The cupcakes are always creative-the frosting may be rose or lavender flavored topped with mini cucumbers, rose petals or bright red gooseberrries. For example, the cucumber-chocolate cupcake was a pleasant surprise. It had the richness of a brownie, with a refreshing cucumber vibe. Savory items include the mini pizzas and flatbread. Mini pizza may have tomato base with nut spread replacing dairy cheese(which you won't miss). The flatbreads may be made from any combination of local vegetables(swiss chard,), herbs and mushrooms, all locally sourced. The pretzel bread is a new favorite. Try it toasted(if it makes it home). In the cooler months, waffles are a staple. Maple syrup included. The blueberry tart....perfecto-I almost forgot that it was gluten free. It's a close second to the lemon yogurt cake....oh its a toss up. For fellow OSU fans and alumni, in the fall the infamous Buckeye-chocolate covered graham crackers are a treat you won't want to miss. Baking gluten free and vegan is a hard feat and Bot Bakery is up for the challenge. Eggs usually make up for the texture lost gluten free foods, while sugar and butter may cover up aftertaste of nonconventional flours. i had passed by bot bakery a couple times at the logan square and 61st street farmers markets, but never purchased anything. i was pretty skeptical as to why a white woman would open a completely vegan/gluten free bakery in south shore, a predominately low income black neighborhood that's still a food desert. this seemed like such a niche thing that screamed blatant red flags of gentrification and inaccessibility. however, i decided to stop in one day on my way to rainbow beach as i was curious how good their baked goods could be. despite my hesitations, the owner of the bakery, betty, was incredibly kind and very open to discussing more about her role in south shore. from our conversation, it seemed like she was pretty conscious about the implications of her business and was dedicated to contributing back to the community. although i am still a little wary as the majority of her staff was completely white. she seemed genuinely concerned and knowledgable about the history and current conditions of south shore, and i'm grateful that she was willing to talk about it. betty recommended the atomic cake, an iconic southside masterpiece of banana, yellow, and chocolate cake filled with coconut cream custard, bananas, and glazed strawberries and topped with a thick layer of fudge. i couldn't tell the cake was either vegan or gluten free as it was creamy, luxurious, and indulgent in all the right ways. my favorite part of the cake was definitely the thick fudge coating on top as it was subtly sweet and reminded me of a good dark chocolate truffle. since i split the cake with a friend, the slice was pretty reasonably priced at $5 considering the high quality unique ingredients that betty used. when we went up to pay the bill, betty gave us two brownies for free after we talked to her for around thirty minutes. the brownies were delicious, extremely chocolatey, fudgey, and not too sweet. i also bought a yellow shirt from her small selection of second hand clothing, and it's now a staple of mine. i think if i were ever in the area, i would definitely stop by again! read more

I love me some bot bakery! I make my weekly trip to the logan square market for my gluten free treats. The tarts are delish as are any of the options with short bread cookies. The smores shortbread cookie was delicious!! All the cookie options are pretty fabulous. I'm not a huge fan of the more dense items like banana bread b/c it does tend to be a little dry (partly expected of any gluten free desserts). Also, any of their cookies with peanut butter is super delish!! They had donuts one week at the outside market and that was amazing. I've been waiting for it to make a comeback! I think some of the negative reviews are bit harsh. There are definitely couple misses with the more denser items. It's gluten free so you know it will be bit dry to begin with. I've enjoyed amazing gluten free desserts in new york and as good as they are, they will never have the texture of the real thing. I wish people would get that when reviewing gluten free products, especially ones made with healthy ingredients like at Bots and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The prices are so reasonable! I stick to the tarts, the shortbread cookies, and regular cookie options at Bots, and for me, it's the best gluten free I've found in Chicago. I just hate that i have to wait for the market every sunday to enjoy it! Couple weeks ago, they had gluten free sour dough bread. I loved eating it with my lentil soup. It had a very distinct bitter taste to it, but I thought it was delicious. I hope that makes a come back along with the donuts! read more

Didn't plan to write this review, but after my fiasco with Bot Bakery, I feel compelled to share my poor experience. I placed an order on Sept. 24th, for a Lemon yogurt birthday cake and was waiting for a call from Bot on delivery time confirmation for November 19th. I Never received a call but a text message on Oct, 11th, from the owner stating " I was out of commission for a little. And unfortunately I have to inform you that our Baker's will be out of town when you need your order." Worst yet, I called the owner several times and never got a response. While I was not looking for anything, I at least expected some empathy. A more professional response would have been "is there anything I can do to accommodate you", which is Customer Service 101. This bakery lost me and many other potentially good customers after this experience. I will never use this bakery again and will not recommend it to anyone else. read more

They constantly switch up their menu to reflect the seasonal changes & use local produce when possible to enrich the flavors, textures, and varieties of their baked goods! I wonder if "bot" is short for "botched," cus this was the worst thing I have ever eaten. I'm not using that as a hyperbole, and I'm not removing things like worm filled apples or Domino's pizza or the chocolate truffle from Vosges that was completely filled with mold -- this was *the* worst tasting thing that ever entered my mouth. The thing I had -- same gooseberry chocolate basil tart mentioned in other review -- tasted like bad pizza with chocolate, mushed up and put in a shell of pure salt. I took one bite and said "eew. huh?," thinking maybe I got a bad bite, like a rotten berry or something, so I tried another, which, upon realizing that was what it all would taste like, I spit out. My friend tried, also spit it out. Other friend smelled and declined to taste. The 'bakers' went to art school, and I suspected that maybe it was an art project: "let's see how gross of a thing we can make! That will be art!" It's also very overpriced. If they make things that are not this repulsive, I highly suggest they offer free samples. read more

Caveat Emptor: I really hoped that Bot Bakery, an organic, gluten-free & vegan baked good option at the Logan Square Farmers Market would be delicious. Perhaps some of their normal goods are edible, unfortunately I picked a bizarre chocolate gooseberry tart with basil. I know it sounds weird, but I figured they must have tasted it if they were selling it & they recommended everything they were offering as equally good. The tart was not good. I smelled it and didn't expect that I was going to like it, but I also didn't think it would be awful. Once it was in my mouth I started to gag and had to spit it out. I really wasn't expecting it to be quite that awful. It was completely inedible! The mix of flavors was terrible, and on top of that, the gluten free crust tasted like it was 30% salt. Really really not good. Maybe robots like to eat the stuff, but I'd be wary. I know that vegan gluten free baked goods can be delicious! I hope they get their acts together! read more

I really like swinging by the Bot Bakery booth at the market, they're super friendly! Everything I've had has been delicious, but I haven't really dared with any of the more 'out-there' flavors like the gooseberry-basil thing mentioned by other reviewers. Their cookies are all generally pretty good, and I just recently had a mint-and-kiwi shortbread cookie thing that was REALLY GOOD. Unusual, but I liked it and the flavors paired well! It was really refreshing in that way mint goods so often are, with a nice citrusy sweetness from the kiwi. And seriously, the girls at the booth are just the nicest. Sometimes things seem a little pricey for how small they are, but overall it's reasonable enough. I dig 'em and am looking forward to seeing them when the market starts up again. read more

Having been gluten free for over 5 years, I'm always excited to try new GF options. On three separate occasions I tried different goodies from this stand. A cherry tart was great, because cherry tarts are hard to mess up. The banana bread was my first disappointment. The mix is what most people "trying the gluten free thing" have found - gritty texture with poor after taste. I was displeased. Today I tried the pancake/waffle mix. I was so excited while whisking the batter and spooning it into the pan. Only to be monumentally let down by the result, yet again. The taste was "earthy" at best. And the texture very gritty. 2 stars because she is trying and I appreciate that. Plus she has a great and welcoming personality. Keep working on your mixture! Hopefully this summer you will surprise me. read more

I have been indulging in the vegan creations by Chef Betty for many years. The seasonal variety is wonderful. I've have everything from the five course vegan dinners to the incredible pastries. I've been more impressed as the years pass. It is often difficult to know the treats you are eating are actually gluten free vegan. So many things I've purchased that are gluten free are the equivalent to a door stop. Chef Betty's flour blends are spot on making her treats much lighter than what you normally think of when you think gluten free. I highly recommend Bot Bakery for a stop at the Logan Square Farmers Market. read more

This is a great treat for any event! I attended the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce Harvest Dinner (which is fabulous) and bid on Bot Bakery for a Dessert. I knew nothing about the bakery except it was a local vegan bakery and I try hard to support local business. With Thanksgiving looming in the near future, I thought it would be a great win, if the bid was selected.. I won! Thanksgiving was going to be held at a close friends. He also is super vegan so I wanted to be able to bring something he could enjoy too. He choose the sweet potato 1/4 sheet cake with vanilla bean frosting. Please keep in mind that this entire dessert is made GLUTEN FREE and WITHOUT ANIMAL PRODUCTS AND to top it off, it is entirely ORGANIC and FAIR TRADE. It really requires a special talent to make a dessert without the traditional milk, eggs, flour, butter, etc. To make a long story short, IT WAS A HIT! My friend loved it and so did the non vegan omnivores. The frosting was exceptionally delicious. He was so excited about the leftovers- he was going to cut the rest into individual pieces to freeze. I can't possibly understand how anyone gave 1-2 stars! I love everything I have ever tried from Bot Bakery over the last 7 months. But here are some of my favorites: The mini pizzas: These are little deep dish vegan pizzas that are delicious warm OR cold! The crust reminds me of a Lou Malnati's buttercrust (which I do miss from time to time...), with tangy, rich vegan cheese and a just enough tomato sauce. I could eat them every day! Whoopie Pies: I've had a chocolate with peanut butter cream whoppie pie and another chocolate whoopie pie which had one of her creative botanical flavors in the cream (lavender? rose? I can't remember!), which was sparked my curiosity and surprised me with how good it was. I'm a fiend for peanut butter-chocolate in any way shape or form, and that one was downright delicious. They come in such a an adorable miniature form that is the perfect size, and doesn't put you on dessert overload (as if that's possible!). The Belgian waffles she has during the winter are the perfect way to start off the farmers market. Warm, sweet, fluffy, and rich tasting. I would love to see her be able to have her own storefront, especially in Logan Square. But for now, the farmer's market is a perfect way to get my vegan sweets fix! read more

Bot Bakery is ok for gluten free baked goods, but I have had better. The bakers are very friendly and you want to love their products but, they are only ok. I give them credit for trying cakes which are much harder to bake gluten free then cookies. The cake that i tried was a small rectangle, yellow or white cake, that was pretty moist but only so so in the taste area. Keep trying Bot Bakery! I think you can do it! read more

Bot Bakery is phenomenal. Every time I visit Logan Square, I make sure it's on a Sunday when I can go to the Farmer's Market. Dietary restrictions (no gluten or dairy) can make it difficult to have a treat, but Bot Bakery makes delicious goodies without any gluten or animal products. I attended a 8-course raw vegan dinner which paired each entree with a different midwestern State mineral (!) and a custom smoothie. Quirky concept, but the food and the overall experience were stellar. Each item was as fresh and flavorful and creative as you would find at any high-end restaurant in town. Some favorites: the sprouts (which were spicy), the 5-way chili, the chocolate sauce and the dessert (wrapped up for us to enjoy at home) which was a multi-layered, multi-colored rainbow of a cake.
