Best Mexican restaurant I have been to in a long time-including San Antonio, Dallas, Little Village places in Chicago....Went to the Iron Horse Hotel this weekend after a long lapse. Maybe 5 years. Sorry to see La Perla and Fuentes closed. Directed to this place and WOW. Place is in Walker's Point down the street from old Fuentes. Very crowded because its so good. Even with the large crazy business service was always perfect. Margaritas were like old Fuentes, delicious and strong as hell. Giant servings, that you cant possibly eat. Solid food, inexpensive and convenient (I LOVE that they have their own parking lot!). The restaurant is roomy and you usually don't have to wait for a table, not because it isn't busy but because it's huge. Get the enchilada soup, it's super tasty. The complimentary chips and salsa are decent and so is the guacamole (not table side BTW). I had the enchilada sampler and it was delish. Had dinner there last evening, it was the worst Mexican food that I have ever I have ever been served. I reluctantly ordered a Number 42 based on my waitresses' suggestion that it was very good. I should have known better to think that she'd give an honest answer; she's paid to agree with the restaurant. It was stated to be 'pork chunks in a "verde" sauce'. I also ordered a cup of the enchilada soup. Instead of the beans I ordered a double portion of rice instead of beans and rice. Water was was my beverage, a small glass. And I had to ask for a refeill. Poor setvice. I know the recipe for this dish because I prepare this at home. It is my favorite dish and was looking forward to it. My soup was never delivered and our waitress said that she forgot. How convenient-another excuse for poor service. Our dinner was delivered and mine was not what I expected. The pork looked like large noodles, not chunks. How did they cut the pork this way? Or was it put through a grinder? It was tasteless, hard, and tough. It certainly was not stewed or tender chunks the way the real recipe reads. Add to insult the sauce was red, not green as the menu stated. I told the waitress that it was not verde sauce and it was not prepared properly. She called the manager to our table and he too tried to convince me with a straight face that it was correct. He told me it was in a marinade of paprika and that's why it was red not green. I know the recipe so his explanation fell on deaf ears. He had a bowl of green sauce delivered to our table and that tasted terrible, over salted and over cooked. My suggestion to the " chef" is to check on Pinterest for the correct recipe for this dish! The rice was bland and white, the pico de galo was left over from the day before. The tomatoes were mushy not fresh. I was offered a different entre but I didn't want to be served any more garbage. I ate my tortillas with my bland rice and tasted the pork. I left almost all of the meat on my plate. The waitress asked if I wanted to take it home and I told her that if I didn't like it or eat it there I certainly wouldn't eat it at home. A location does not a GOOD MEXICAN restaurant make. I will continue to patronize the locations that serve this entre the correct way. Thank heavens for them! read more

Botanas looks great. The ambiance and decor are perfect, the staff is eager and friendly and fast. And with its ample space, this could be an ideal place for groups. I was with a group this time, as a matter of fact, and it looked to be a perfect location. The food is okay. Not great, just kind of "meh." The chips and salsa didn't seem quite fresh. I like warm chips at Mexican places, these seemed to be out of a box or bag. The meals were okay. Mine was kind of runny and not as flavorful as I'd hoped. Some in the group were very pleased with their food, some were disappointed. I'd try Botanas again, but probably not any time soon. read more

I'm a frequenter of Botantas on 5th Street. I've been here on many occasions ie. work, with clients, nights out, and with different sized groups. AND you'll be happy to learn that they've been huge a win over the other 4,879 Mexican restaurant options in this area of town! FOOD - Okay -The food is your basic Fajitas, Enchiladas, Tacos, etc. Their menu has an extreme amount of choices, much like you'd find at any other Mexican restaurant including combo platters. This is no craft taco joint like others in the area, so don't come expecting that. What you can expect however, is consistency from visit to visit and of course large portions. I typically get the fajitas, but have had good experiences with tacos and quesadillas. DRINKS - Once again - basic Mexican style drinks. They have different size and flavor options which is always nice. I typically stick to a half pitcher of the regular margaritas...call me unadventurous or a lush...I like what I like! ATMOSPHERE - Walk into this place and you will soon learn that this joint goes on and on and on into a large outdoor patio. You will never wait for a table which is wonderful! When I visited last time, I sat outside which was kind of loud, but it's summer and nice out so whatever! TIPS, DEALS AND STEALS - You need to try the enchilada soup AND if you come for their cheapo lunch (like $7-9) you get a cup fo' free (or a cup included...it's all in how you look at it). read more

This place is seriously terrible. I knew I should turn around when I saw the sign that said no baggy jeans. I knew I should have really turned around when I saw the sign that said they weren't responsible for insects in their food (?!!!!!), but alas, I didn't because of the trusty four star Yelp rating. The food was below Taco Bell quality, which I haven't ate in probably 5 years but from what I remember, I would definitely choose Taco Bell over this place. Guacamole was so funky tasting - no flavor at all except the taste of old avocados. Avocados are delish alone so I'm not sure how they messed that up. We tried everything - even ordering lime juice to add and still tasted rancid. We both ordered a tostada and enchilada combo and again no flavor. It all had what looked like Mexican blend shredded cheese from grocery store over it and tasted like nothing. The hot sauce on our table was missing a cap and was clogged from hardened hot sauce. We couldn't eat any of it despite dumping hot sauce (from another table) and sour cream over it. Our server asked if I was feeling ill since I didn't eat the food...I'm sure that's foreshadowing the coming hours for me from what little I did eat. I've heard so much good about botanas in the past, I don't know why it took me so long to get here. I always end up at la fuente or la perla I guess. Atmosphere: like a labyrinth of rooms. Chi-chi's meets the rainforest cafe. We wound up being led across the jungle themed bar, through a faux mayan temple into a huge dining room with a low ceiling that vaguely reminded me of being on an airplane. Service: the secret service of Mexican restaurant servers! They all wore white dress shirts and were outfitted with earpiece and clip-on microphones! I guess they really want to make sure the place runs like a well-oiled machine which it did. Food: my shrimp soup was very good. Our table polished off the basket of chips and salsa so kudos on that too. Prices were similar to the other places in the area. Overall good food. They think because they are hitting 5th street it will be great but unfortunately most of the places are now commercialized garbage. If you doubt me, please look around and see if there are any Hispanic people eating at your restaurant. We only went to Botanas because our favorite place down the street was closed on Tuesdays. After many years we thought we would give it another try to see if the food was better. Unfortunately we were very disappointed with everything except for the service. When you order food and five minutes later it shows up at your table you know it has been scooped from a trough. My husband's pork tacos were dry and inedible. His rice had the crunch of something done pre al dente. The beans were one of the highlights of the meal. The red salsa actually had a decent kick to it as well. My food was okay but it really lacked any decent flavor. It was expensive for mediocre Mexican food. Personally I would rather hit El Senorial, GTO, Jalapeno Loco, Cielito Lindo or something else vs. experiencing expensive mediocre Mexican food. PS - Yes they do try to nickel and dime you here. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee. The atmosphere is always amazing. They have THE BEST salsa in all of Milwaukee. I can't get enough of that stuff. The service is prompt and treat you nicely. The patio is a godsend during hot days sipping on a margarita but the inside with all the Aztec prints is so fun to look at. I remember working down by here when I was younger when it was just the bar area with some seating and have enjoyed how much it has expanded. Have you ever watched Legends of the Hidden Temple on Nickelodeon and thought to yourself: "You know what? I'd really like to eat a mexican style meal in that hidden temple, seems appetizing." You're in luck, because that is the only way I can describe Botanas. And I'm not mad about it, it's fun, bright, and stands out! The prices are fair, and you don't have to fight a shirtless man in vaguely racist ancient mayan mask/skirt combo for seating. Our waiter seemed a bit short with us when we had a few questions, but once the ball was rolling, the food and drinks came quickly, and were hot. The drinks were good without being overly sweet, and most of the food was surprisingly good! The standard beans and rice were pretty run of the mill, but the tamale I had was probably one of the best I've had ever. The main thing our party noticed was that this had probably been one of the least oily/greasy mexican meals we had ever had. That's a huge draw for me, since I usually feel pretty sick after doing anything greasy/oily. When the bill came, we were a bit surprised that we were charged for a few small items, for example, one of us had ordered items a la carte as she didn't want beans/rice, and asked for lettuce on the side as it wasn't mentioned on the individual orders. Turns out that the items did have a side of shredded lettuce, and they dropped off an extra plate of it for her, leaving her with three sides of lettuce. We thought it was kind of funny, however she was charged $2 for the side of lettuce when the waiter could have told her that they did already have sides of it included. If I had a craving, I'd definitely give it another shot, it seems like it'd be a great option for to go as well, but it just fell a bit short to really stand out as something to go out of the way for outside of the atmosphere. read more

Visited Botanas on a Saturday night with a group of five around 8 p.m. Definitely appreciated that they had off street parking, both next door to the restaurant and across the street. I had been hearing people mention Botanas for many many years so my visit was long overdue. Being a Mexican place on a Saturday night - it was crazy busy. Pretty standard in my experience so wasn't off-put by that or being told the wait was 45 minutes. They gave us a pager and we were able to post up at one of the bars. Once we got our pitcher of margaritas the time passed pretty quickly and they were spot on in the time estimation. It is a cool set up, that there are lots of little alcoves and rooms with tables and interesting kitschy decor (very low lighting). All of the staff at the door was polite and efficient, as well as the bartenders. Once we were seated, our server brought over chips and dips pretty quickly. Nothing special with the salsa, tastes like out of a jar. We decided our orders and were impressed with the extensive menu and the reasonable prices. Our server was helpful with suggestions for the table. I tried the big Chimichanga, which is my go-to at Mexican places and was not disappointed. Great proportion of meat and cheese and a large serving of beans and rice. Also appreciated they served it with guacamole; which I then proceeded to use with some chips (maybe a cheapo hack to not pay for guac as an appetizer). One thing worth noting - the gratuity was added on for our table of five. Seems like a lower number than normal to automatically have it added, but maybe I'm out of date. Once our server brought us our meal he pretty much went MIA and we wondered if it had anything to do with knowing he was already getting his automatic tip. They definitely didn't rush us out the door but also didn't bring us any more water or ask if we needed any drinks or bring us the bill for quite some time. I'd really like to rate Botanas a 3.5 Decor: really well done. It's a "jungle temple" theme with murals everywhere. It could be a little brighter in some areas as it was hard to see our plates. Salsa: a key indicator of quality. Pretty good - I like it a little hotter but it was fresh and tasty. Food: I had carne asada plate lunch. The pork was juicy and tender without being greasy or fatty. Rice & beans....ehhhh....they were ok. Service: top notch. Very fast, very friendly. Our sever handled our group of 13 smoothly, delivering everything correctly and keeping on top of drinks. It was impressive. Botanas is definitely a notch above the other 5th street establishments but I wouldn't rate it "the best" - those honors go to the taquerias at El Rey or Guanajuato. I freaking love this place. Botana's is BY FAR my favorite Mexican restaurant. The service is impeccable, the margaritas are mighty strong, the food is fast, fresh and delicious (and almost certainly low in calories...), it's obviously extremely clean; what's not to love? On today's visit, we started out with the (endless) tortilla chips and salsa. I know a lot of restaurants give out free chips and salsa, but not like this. This salsa just tastes like a garden... a spicy garden. We ordered a half-pitcher of margaritas (perfect for a couple who needs to drive home after dinner) which were decidedly not made with fresh lime juice, but since we ordered the cheapest option, we got what we paid for, and we were extremely satisfied. I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes with cheese & onions. This was served as 3 enchiladas with a side of refried beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream and a tomato slice. Not a crappy, light pink tomato slice, mind you, but a fresh, deep red, flavorful slice o' tomato. The Verde sauce was delicious, not too spicy, somewhat tart, and certainly complex. My fiance couldn't decide on a sauce, so he ordered something listed as a new item which was Enchiladas with 4 Moles. This didn't come with a side of rice & beans, but he really wanted some, so that's what he got. He was full before half of his plate was empty, but he said each of the moles was delicious; especially the one with chocolate. Our server was awesome as was the gentleman who refilled our salsa. Friendly, efficient, polite and helpful. Exactly what you want from a waiter/ess. Going out for Mexican? Came to Botanas on a Thursday night.The outside of the restaurant is bright and festive, I love the little statues standing guard at the parking gate. The parking lot is really small, but I think there is extra parking across the street. Inside is a little dark, but just as festive and decorated with Inca/jungle motif. We all were sat at a long table, watered, and chip and salsaed. My uncle and I shared the Shrimp Ceviche, which was perfectly seasoned with jalepenos, tomatoes, cilantro, and lime juice. I hate it when ceviche is too sour. The rest of the family had the usual delights of Taco salad, big, burrito, etc... The margaritas looked very yummy, but alas this chica was driving so I can't tell you how they were. The margaritas are sold separately or in a pitcher. One bad part was the lack of water, we had to keep asking for more, until I finally asked for a couple of pitchers, and they weren't that busy, Oh well, all in all a good night. read more

I can't say enough good things about Botanas! I feel like this place has been around forever and it's no wonder why it's stuck around - it's great! The space is huge so getting a table is never an issue. The hostesses and waitstaff are always so friendly and fun. The music is always great and the decor almost makes it feel like you're on vacation. The menu is huge with lots of options. I was with a friend who is a vegetarian and the waitress suggested the spinach quesadilla and she loved it. The margaritas (raspberry!) are wonderful but a little expensive. What is the hype with Botanas?! A couple girlfriends and I tried this Mexican restaurant because they were so highly talked about. I was extremely underwhelmed. We went on a Friday and it was packed!! The have two parking lots that you can park in or street parking but beware - it is a very busy area and if there isn't parking available, it may take some time to find something in walking distance. We put our names in and the hostess said 30-45 minutes - we decided to sit at the bar and order margaritas. Within 2 minutes of leaving the hostess table and getting to the bar... our buzzer rang. It was a little frustrating because now we had to wait for our drinks to be made before following her to our seats. We order guacamole and I was extremely disappointed. This is absolutely one of my favorite things to order when going out to get Mexican... It was extremely bland. For being a Mexican place, you'd think that there would be a bit more spices. It was almost like getting an avocado and mashing it up then dipping your chips in that! We put in our orders and I ordered the enchiladas verdes, which is three enchiladas with the choice of chicken, beef, steak or pork with cheese and onions. Very simple ... again there seemed like there was no spice in these just the couple ingredients. I also specifically asked for flour tortillas and got corn. Overall, a very underwhelming place for how big the hype was. The kicker of visiting this restaurant... we were sat all the way in the back room. Our waiter was charging his phone and texting almost the whole time we were here. You could tell he wanted to leave work. After we were done with our meal, he brought our checks over without even asking if we wanted another drink... Because we hadn't seen each other in a couple months, we wanted to enjoy the dinner and have a couple drinks this really upset me. This place has good food and great service. We were seated right away and snacked on the warm tortilla chips and salsa as the restaurant got steadily more packed. That's always a good sign! My lime margarita was good and I'd like to try their other variations. I think it's nice that they serve half or full pitchers, too. I ordered the enchiladas verdes and couldn't decide if I wanted just cheese and onions or the grilled veggies, too. The server suggested getting one with the veggies and the other two with just cheese and onions. They were good and I have leftovers for lunch. I know their intention is not to rush people but the food was so freaky fast that I kind of couldn't help but feel that way. I go to Botanas for two reasons: 1) a quick, cheap lunch special and 2) mariachis and other festivities. Every time I go I hope I get seated in that back room with the mysteriously sexual drawing on the walls... if you know what I mean. Botana's food is really nothing too special for me, just solid, basic, fresh mexican comfort food. Mariachis are fun and the set up at Botanas is large enough that they can roam, so they are entertaining for a while and then go in the other room and aren't annoying. Another Mexican restaurant for the picky eater! This was my first visit to Botanas and I had somewhat high hopes, as this is a favorite restaurant of a very good friend. I was *slightly* disappointed, but I would definitely go back and try it again. The decor was amusing to me, as it was a combination of Mayan pyramid and jungle murals, Day Of the Dead statuary and stereotypical sombreros, blankets and plants. The complimentary chips were average, as was the salsa. I ordered the mini dish of a taco and an enchilada. The enchilada was delicious, but the taco was dry. Yes, I ordered it without lettuce and tomato, and I added cheese, but really, it was bland, bland, bland. The rice and beans were, again, not the standard crap you get at most restaurants. They were both very good and made up for the bland taco. The margaritas were already made and ready to be served when we arrived (we were attending a private party). I had one (one!) and the headache I had by the end of the night was nothing to laugh at. I can drink several over at a nearby restaurant and be pain-free. Overall, this place is pretty good and I am usually pretty happy when I go here. The staff is nice and they are good at what they do. The atmosphere is usually pretty fun, but this place can get crowded especially on the weekends. The patio is nice to sit on in the summer to avoid some of the crowds and the constant smell of Mexican food that will stick to your clothes like the smell of cigarettes. The food is usually good, although can be a little dry at times. Last time I went here I ordered the tacos and they were not bad, but a little dry. The margaritas are pretty good as well, but they are very, very strong and they definitely put more liquor in them then anything else. Overall, this place is good about 8/10 times and it is usually as authentic as you can get for Milwaukee. The only downsides are the occasionally dry food and the occasional "full house". read more

This was my second time eating at Botanas. I didn't enjoy my first dish (enchiladas) but my second time around was very very good. I got the One Big Chimichanga (ground beef) which was tasty. The chimichanga was definitely big. Basically the size of a burrito. I'm a cheese lover so I enjoyed the sight of cheese oozing out after each cut with the fork. Very disappointed overall. Food had no flavor from the guacamole to the chicken fajita. Salsa was overly spicy. Service was fair. Had to ask for water 3 times. We also asked for more chips and that never happened. Atmosphere has changed dramatically as well. read more
