Came here to try a new place for Mexican food and due to the high reviews was very excited to try it. While i understand this is a traditional Mexican restaurant i was still very disappointed. To start out i ordered a strawberry margarita as the waitress didnt understand English when i asked for a skinny margarita..... the margarita was absolutely awful. It was pure sugar and no alcohol. Did she forget to add the alcohol? Idk but it was absolutely awful. For the tacos i ordered a steak and chicken with rice. The steak was good and the chicken taco was just okay... Would i come back? I first found out of this place at the South Shore Farmers Market, which is so cool! I didn't see chorizo listed as meats for tacos but I noticed they had chorizo con huevos. So I asked if I could get some chorizo tacos even though I don't see it and they said of course. I'm so glad that they did because I found my new favorite restaurant for chorizo tacos! We had a nice dinner on the covered patio at Guanajuato. The margaritas were a little too sweet for my liking, but we definitely got our money's worth from them as they weren't tiny. The salsa is almost a mix of a mild salsa and a hot sauce I've had at other restaurants. It was nicely spicy and had lots of chunks of onion and tomato. Hubby and I both ordered the plate with a steak taco, cheese enchilada and ground beef chimichanga. The steak in the taco was seasoned perfectly and I loved it with the cilantro and onion. The beans had great flavor and the cheese pull on the enchilada was legendary. The Chimichanga wasn't oily at all, but we would have loved a little sour cream with it to offset the heaviness. This is the second time I've gone to eat at this restaurant and experienced terrible service. We arrived at 7:40pm and were seated outside. There was only one other table seated at the time. 15 minutes went by without being acknowledged or having our drink orders taken. At 8:00pm another group was seated in our section. We met a friend at Guanajuato's on a warm Sunday evening at the beginning of March. As we stood waiting for our table, chaos unfolded before us. The staff ran to and fro, maintaining eye contact with no one. We stood there for a good ten minutes before a gentleman asked if we wanted a table. In the middle of my sentence, he took off but returned a few minutes later with menus. The menus displayed the typical array of Mexican dishes offered in Milwaukee. Our server was very pleasant and returned numerous times to ask how things were. I just nodded because things weren't too good. My cocktail was ridiculous. It was a mezcal offering with grapefruit soda. There was hardly any booze. Our food was tasteless. Including my chilaquiles. The Burrito tasted like it was once frozen and then warmed up. While the mole had a chocolate base, a weird spicy after taste was discordant, as if it was added as an afterthought. This was not grandma's mole sauce. In Oaxaca, this mole would be a grandchild's first attempt. I wanted to enjoy Guanajuato's. It has a prime Bay View location, but the food let me down. Two blocks away, any food truck would prepare better food. For food we got tacos. I got steak and chicken. I would skip on the chicken next time but the steak taco was really good! We also got a mango margarita and horchata. It looks like it's in a house but there's a good sized deck / patio on the north side of the building They have an extensive drink/margarita menu and even non alcoholic drinks like non alcoholic Corona (who knew?) I had a pineapple Jarrito which was delicious as always One of.my DCs had shrimp and steak fajitas which took no time at all and came out sizzling and warm I had the shrimp a la Mexicana (forgive me I can't spell the word for shrimp in Spanish)., it was cooked in butter with tons of onions and jalapeños- spicy ! I am so happy to make the drive from MN all the way to this place ! The restaurant has changed a lot from the last time I was here and I'm talking BIG improvements! I know that outdoor dinning is over but it's amazing to see the big outdoor space they have plus the added addition in the back that makes the restaurant so much bigger. What a great brunch!!! Went with our daughter and son-in-law. (4 of us) Had a large pitcher of blended strawberry margaritas --- delish and filled up to the rim. Started off with.a cheesy ground beef nachos appetizer and then each of has a different meal. ALL the food was tasty and served by a perfectly kind and attentive waiter. It was brought out in a timely manor and all of it was really delicious. Tables were separated for social distancing. They have a beautiful outside patio but, it was raining so it wasn't open. Update: why is this not a 5-star review? Once I was sure I could go back I was here. GTO is one of the best spots in Bay View, for any kind of cuisine. I've never had anything that wasn't delicious. The prices and portion sizes are great. The people are always nice. They have a patio but when I visited this past sunny weekend they only had indoor seating, at limited capacity of course, with plexiglass dividers between the tables. The salsa was as bright as I remembered. I got the camaron a la diabla, among my favorite dishes, and the plate was WHOPPING. Plenty of everything. With fresh and tasty avocado on the salad. Is it obvious that I love spring? I actually do have errands that take me out to Bay View often enough to visit here more often. Actual patio dining would be nice once the weather is consistent, whatever the trajectory on the COVID front. Everything is good. It's good to be back. read more

In my opinion this place has the best al pastor and steak tacos in Milwaukee. So delicious and flavorful. The meat is juicy and has a crisp texture but is still tender. Excelente! Normally I take pictures of the food but it was so good to look at I couldn't resist diving right in and by then the flavor explosion in my mouth distracted me from anything else going on. Their menu is pretty extensive and has lots of options - I went with a chicken chimichanga. Their chips and salsa were tasty and the salsas to go with the other dishes were served in squeeze bottles so you could easily titrate how much you got. This weekend was only my second time visiting, the last being a few years ago. Guanajuato Mexican was as good as I remembered it. The ambiance is nice, the service is good, and the food is well-priced and delicious. We came in around 5PM on a Saturday and waited just a minute for a table to be cleared off; the restaurant was busy but not completely packed. The salsa which comes before the meal is pretty fantastic. Homemade and not too spicy to appeal to most people. We ordered the Chiles Rellenos, Enchiladas Rojas, and Burrito Rojo. All of the food was delicious, the portions were large, and everyone enjoyed their dinners. I usually go for Chiles Rellenos when I see it on a menu, and Guanajuato's did not disappoint. Nicely done poblano peppers oozing with melted cheese, smothered in a delicious sauce - how can you go wrong? The red sauce on the enchiladas was especially good as well. I can't believe I haven't written a post about here yet! Lovingly referred to as GTO to most of its diners, this Bayview Mexican hotspot has good food, good drinks at reasonable prices. It's outdoor patio was very attractive in the summer, and now, with Covid, became even more of an important offering. You can get a delicious and sugary margarita like you're hoping for here as well as a large menu of traditional and plain Jane Mexican dishes.
