Highly recommend John and Bottaro Wood fires Pizza! We had a birthday celebration for our 7 year old and wanted to hire a mobile pizza oven. We searched a number of different companies here in San Diego and decided on Bottaro. John and 2 helpers showed up on time and were completely professional. They provided their own table and table clothes along with utensils, plates, and napkins! They had a number of personal pizzas to chose from for adults and kids. We had requested to have salad as well and it was delicious. Some of our biggest pizza critics were very impressed with how delicious the pizzas were. They even made some "special" order pizzas for some of the kids. It was a HUGE hit with the neighbors/guests. I hope we have a chance to use John and his team again soon. Even after booking another party due to my tardy deposit, he figured out a way to make both events work. Brian, our pizza chef was wonderful! He even doubled as our photographer a couple times, haha! His memory of what happened is a little skewed. In a nutshell...I asked if he would be available on May 11th, he said yes, send more info. I sent him more info. He then said he actually he has his daughters graduation in May and asked again what the date was. I told him May 11th. Then he came back with no I'm not available that he has to work. Mind you I was asking 10 months in advance, I don't know if firefighters have a set schedule that they know 10 months in advance, maybe they do. He also said in two years he would be wide open once he retires. He then said that if I call him a few weeks before my wedding that he might be available. Sound confusing? It was to me also. I felt as though he was using his job as an excuse because he wanted to make sure that he didn't book an event during his daughters graduation, which is fine I get it. But if you aren't available in May, say it upfront. That's not what happened. So I did tell him he has a lot to learn about business. Because if you are going to be a caterer and book future events its important to know your schedule. And he fired back with "good luck to your future husband". As if to say good luck your future wife is a pain in the ass. Not a happy good luck to you guys. Now here we are two years later. I would have gladly removed my review (as I had for other past reviews) with a sincere apology and understanding that he was a little confused in our interactions and that his "good luck to your future husband" comment was snappy. I attended a wedding where John served the pizza and salads it was fabulous!!! I hired him to cater my niece's shower. We had seen John catering at a wedding reception in our neighborhood and it looked fun. We decided to use Bottaro for a Staff Appreciation Party of about 30 people. Both John & his wife came, they set-up early and got the appetizers & salad out quickly, which everyone loved. The pizza's however came a little slower - which made it a little difficult to navigate for all our hungry guest. John was able to cater to special dietary request - gluten-free and vegan. Overall everyone loved the pizza - great fun concept, especailly for a cocktail party - as far as the main part of the meal - perhaps plan to have another main-dish for guest to nosh on while waiting for the wood-fired pizza's. read more

John was our caterer for our wedding and it was amazing! He is very professional, easy to talk with, responsive, and helpful. He knew our venue so well, and our other vendors. We thought it would be different and fun to have a pizza oven for our wedding and we were so excited about it! Everyone thought it was so different and so good! We hired John thinking he was local, had a good reputation and would do a great job for our son's party. He was very friendly and seemed accommodating on the phone so maybe this was an off night for him???? Having worked with another outdoor fire oven caterer I figured they were all similar in service. When John arrived he was great the kids got their cheese pizza and all was good. However the pizzas for adults were not quite as creative and full of unique toppings like our last caterer. However when my friend showed a video of him coming into our party and opening one of our bottles of wine for himself I was shocked!!! We never offered him wine and it was crazy that he thought he could come inside and pour himself a glass!!! Additionally he left over an hour early stating he ran out of supplies even though not all our guests had been served. His wife showed up and suddenly he was packing up his things . We had agreed to a number of guests served and he packed up and left requesting his money. My husband and I regretted paying him and giving him our business but decided not to start an argument at our son's birthday. We had kept our end of the agreement sending him 50% deposit 2 weeks before the event but it was not reciprocated the day of the event. read more

John is fantastic--very kind, personable, and accessible--and he and his team made the most delicious food for our wedding: caprese skewer appetizers, 5 types of pizza (margherita, bee sting, sausage, white pie, pesto artichoke) and 2 salads (mixed greens and tri-tip--yum!). He had was also very accommodating in making gluten, dairy, and meat free pizzas for guests with food allergies. We heard from almost every guest that the food was fantastic and received many compliments that should rightfully go to John. If you haven't tasted his pizza yet, go to the Leucadia Farmer's Market this Sunday and get ready for some of the best thin-crust artisan pizza with fresh, local ingredients that you have ever tasted!
