I can't resist a white chocolate macadamia cookie, so selected that as well to round out the order. Unfortunately, a blueberry muffin appeared in place of the lemon poppyseed. The Boudin folks clearly tried to make amends by adding a slice of marble pound cake, which was a nice gesture. The blueberry muffin was a bit dry and not too flavorful. Boudin has really stepped up their game in recent months. They've always been good, but I feel like their quality and variety have improved. I particularly like the choose two with a soup - usually clam chowder + $1 extra for a bread bowl and the Cobb salad. I hardly ever order salad as a meal, but this is one of the best Cobb salads. Boudin's is known for their bread, especially sourdough. They are a chain bakery-restaurant and have been around for a while. Both the wifey and I love sourdough. Their sandwiches, salads, and soups are always so good and fresh. Most recently, I tried their Thanksgiving Turkey Melt which is seasonal. It's a hot sandwich that is made with turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, cranberry Dijon, on a rustic stuffing bread. I was blown away by how good it was. It was hot, crisp, turkey was moist, and bacon was thick (and they didn't skimp on it). It was a nice mixture of savory and sweet... the cranberry Dijon was delicious! I just wish the sandwich wasn't seasonal... it should be on their permanent menu. One of my favorite things to order here is the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. It is especially good on cold days. Another favorite here is "The Great" (their signature grilled cheese) with Bacon. It lives up to it's name! It has plenty of thick Applewood smoked bacon. They use Havarti & sharp cheddar cheese that is melted perfectly on Parmesan crusted sourdough! Nice toasted crunchiness with delicious melted cheese and crisp bacon which each bite. Yum! Boudin's is easy to find. On the corner of Balboa Ave and Genesee in the same shopping center as Vons, CVS, Kohl's, and 85 Degrees Bakery. There is plenty of parking. Came in with high expectations, but this location really missed the mark. Tried the chicken Caesar, short rib sandwich, and clam chowder. The chicken Caesar had barely any dressing and wasn't even properly tossed, so it was pretty dry. The short rib sandwich was also disappointing. It was way too dry and didn't have nearly enough short rib. The clam chowder was actually the best of the three, but that's not saying much. It was super thick and pretty flavorless. Fashion Valley Boudin location closed and I wasn't impressed with the food they had since it wasn't close to the San Francisco restaurant. So I haven't tried Boudin for years for fear of being disappointed. The Claremont location however did not disappoint me. They have good sandwiches and seems to have the best calm chowder in San Diego. The calm chunks are small - perfect since I don't like biting into a large chewy calms. Also it doesn't have that overly fishy flavor. The sourdough bread is also great here. Other places seem to have hard as a rock outer shell of the sourdough bread. Pretty disappointing for a Boudin. Food took FOREVER, I think they just decided to forget about our order. When they finally delivered our food, I asked what took so long (30 minutes), and the guy said, "I guess the kitchen didn't feel like cooking it." Boudin far exceeded my expectations in both quality of food and excellent customer service for a chain eatery. I've been here a few times and the staff are kind and friendly. Patrick in particular took his time to explain items on the menu to me. He mentioned he started only a month ago, but his knowledge and sincerity were genuine enough to made me feel welcomed and well informed to select great sandwiches! I absolutely loved their short rib melt. If you can't decide on a sandwich give the short rib melt a try! The cheese crusted bread stuffed with short rib and pickled onions make an excellent combination of flavors and textures! And you can't go wrong with the signature clam chowder bowl! I love coming to this Boudin for all my bread-related needs. I've only tried the tomato soup on the actual menu, but everything always looks enticing. My main reason for this review, though, is to mention the exceptional service I received today: Wednesday, May 14th (6 PM-ish). Rosie and Vincent were working upfront, and what a great team they were. I was immediately greeted upon arrival, with Rosie eagerly awaiting to take my order. The store was nearly out of bread, but that proved to be okay because Rosie accommodated, using my rewards points to get the best deal for me. Whilst she was handled my order, Vincent swooped in (without being asked), and sliced my bread. She even offered butter, which in all my visits, I can't recall being ever offered (it's possible, but I don't remember). The entire transaction/interaction was friendly and efficient, as good customer service should be. Unfortunately, it's such a rarity these days, so I wanted to be sure that I acknowledged these two by name. When in "The City" aka San Francisco, we try to swing by Boudin in the Richmond District. The Geary & 10th location allows us to pick up their delicious sourdough bread to either enjoy while in the Bay Area, or to bring home to Southern California. We were recently in the San Diego area and were making a Target run for a few items and ended up in Clairemont Mesa. Noticed a Boudin SF bakery across the street and told Dear Hubby that I definitely wanted to go there after Target and before we headed to his cousins' vacation rental house where family was gathering. I didn't know that there was a Boudin location outside of the Bay Area. Apparently they skipped the Central Coast and L.A., but have a few locations in Orange County, and this one in San Diego. We could use one in Ventura County, I say! This bakery café features a full complement of sourdough bread - from baguettes to round loaves. They will slice a full loaf for you on the spot, which is convenient if you plan to start eating the same day of purchase. They also have adorably cute teddy bear-shaped loaves. We were in a time crunch, so I didn't take time to read the rest of the menu, but I believe they make sandwiches fresh for the cafe part of the business. The internal space feels airy and bright. Some colorful artwork featuring S.F. scenes also energizes the dining room area. Kept in a bread box, we are still enjoying the last of the large multi-grain loaf we bought over a week ago. I also ordered the chicken pesto sandwich.. admittedly I had higher expectations, I've had this same sandwich at the original location and loved it, but the bread at this location was very tough and hard to bite into, hurt my teeth. And there was so little pesto spread that I was questioning if they even put it on. Service was neutral good with ordering. But the gal that brought me my sandwich was off-putting. I smiled at her and thanked her but she was glaring and silent. That was uncomfortable. I do dig the vibe of this location though.
