The Habit on Genesee Ave is my front runner for worst customer service in 2026. I was excited last year when I won a year of free double char burgers from The Habit. Lately it has been a struggle to get my free burger. The cashier/manager says I have to make a $10 purchase and then I will get a free burger. Each week I get a coupon in the Habit app for a free burger as long as I spend $10 before discounts. In the past I would add double bacon and the total would be over $10. When I mentioned the cashier/manager has rung me up in the past she said it only worked in the past because she did a manager override. Also she stated she got in trouble for doing the manager override. There was no point in complaining to management as it appeared the cashier was also the manager. I complained to customer service on https://www.habitburger.com that I was not being given my free burger and instead was given a burger after a $10 purchase. No reply after 3 weeks so I am writing this review. I went to the Mira Mesa Habit and they gave me my free burger after buying double bacon. Same with the Pacific Beach location. The young woman behind the counter was rude so I didn't want to take anything back. Everyone has a bad day. Today, of all days, while featured on Fox5 morning news as being the best in America, we thought we would give it ONE MORE TRY. So we ordered a single for me with everything and a double char for my husband, no mayo, no pickles on onions plus an order of their onion ring/french fry combo with extra catchup. What we got, after driving back to the office, was the single was fine, the catchup was not here at all and the double char was covered in mayo and had pickles on it. Being furious, my husband went back. He was angry, admitted to droping the terrible burger on the counter (in a bag and wrapped) and said he wanted it made right. He also suggested that since his french fries were cold now that they offer another order. He was told by the same gal behind the counter that if he had "asked nicely" that she might have done that but wasn't going. He gets back to the office, again, and there was no mayo, no pickles but it was a single. He just headed back, AGAIN, from the office to go back and get what was supposed to be the 'BEST BURGER IN AMERICA" I know that they are supposed to make things look good in ads and on TV but these burgers were NOT TOASTED and 1/2 the size of what was on TV. I haven't been to The Habit in a while--too many good burger joints in SD! I was pleasantly surprised at how good the charburger was. It was juicy, warm, toasted bun and melted cheese. I forgot the thing I hate the most about The Habit is how small their fries or frings (split basket of onion rings and fries) are. I got a small amount of fries and 4 onion rings for about $5. Dining area was clean and cashier was friendly. Only negative was their sauces at the sauce station was low or empty. Manager Lady working the afternoon shift today 2/16/26 gave my husband a hard time arguing that it didn't come with a drink . The Habit serves up some decent burgers, but that wasn't the only reason we decided to drop in. We were in a group and some people didn't want to have a burger, so that eliminated In N Out. The Habit has a fair amount of options. They serve burgers, sandwiches, and salads. They have the Charburger, BBQ Bacon Charburger, Teriyaki Charburger, the Santa Barbara Char (burger on sourdough), a Portabella Mushroom Charburger, and even the Impossible burger (vegetarian). Of course these can be served with cheese and even an extra patty (AKA a double). They have a nice BBQ Chicken Salad, Grilled Chicken Caesar, Garden Salad, and the Santa Barbara Cobb Salad. There are plenty of options, and there seems to be something for everyone. We placed our order at the self order kiosk and entered our cell phone number. After no more than a 10-15 minute wait, we received a text telling us that our order was ready. The burger and fries looked (and smelled) pretty good. From the bun to the patty to the add ons (lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes), everything tasted nice and fresh. Fries were perfectly salted and crispy. The Grilled Chicken Caesar looked pretty good and everything appeared to be fresh. I rate the burgers here better than Shake Shack, but not as good as In N Out. I didn't have the salad this time, but in the past it has been good. It seems as though a lot of places are implementing self-serve kiosks (for example Shake Shack). The Habit has a couple at this location. Convenient if there is a long line or if you're unsure about what you want and need to look through the menu. Service is generally okay to good. This place is pretty clean and there was plenty of seating. Plenty of parking in this shopping center. Located in the same shopping center as Vons, Kohl's, 85 Degrees Bakery, and Jersey Mike's. The only vegan option for sandwiches was their veggie patty. It's one of the most off putting veggie patties I've ever had the displeasure of eating. The flavor was bland, and more importantly, the texture grossed me out. They used to carry the impossible burger patties, which taste amazing and have an excellent texture. I was craving that nostalgic burger flavor and texture, but was very disappointed instead by the gelatinous texture. My sons really liked the chargrilled meat and the bun, but were still hungry when they finished. My daughter liked her nuggets. They were a good portion too. My grilled chicken sandwich was okay. Nothing special. The bread was NOT sourdough and it was soaked in butter, very greasy and with the mayo (even though I asked for lite mayo, it was soggy). I was full when I fished it, so the portion size was good. The fries were good and we all enjoyed them. Overall I'd say the Habit was okay, and for around $35 it fed a family of four with two sides of fries, so that's good these days. I'm a frequent visitor of Habit, but not because it is my first choice burger restaurant. My son absolutely loves the burgers and I appreciate they offer sweet potato fries. The burgers are ok, nothing special in my opinion, especially for the price. A basic cheeseburger is over $6, make it a meal, it's over $12. For that I'd rather go to the place with the very long lines. I liked the option of the $5 BLT while they had it. My only gripe was that it was very inconsistent, there would be between 3 and 5 pieces of bacon. 3 was very skimpy and 5 was perfect. It's not like this was thick cut bacon, more like microwave bacon so that was a let down. The salads are pretty good and for the price, the size is filling. That is actually one of my favorite items from The Habit. Their ranch is also fantastic! My biggest issue is they cook the fries when they are ordered and the burger takes 5 times longer, so the majority of the time your fries are cold when they are served. The times that they are ice cold, I've asked for them to be re-made and get attitude from the workers. I wanted sweet potato fries but the app only offered French fries, for that reason I just ordered the Burger. It was ok, a bit over cooked for my personal preference, so it was a little dry but edible. The app was also limited on customizations, I wanted extra grilled onions but it wasn't an option. I also would have liked extra teriyaki sauce but felt 60 cents was a bit much considering the 50 cents extra for an extra slice of pineapple . This is usually a place I will go to if a friend invites me. I went today because I was craving a Teriyaki Burger and it was the closest place to me. I love The Habit and come here at least once every other month. My go to is a char burger with cheese no ketchup, add mustard, lettuce wrapped. Staff are friendly, take your order quickly and move you along. There is plenty of indoor seating: booths, tables, high top tables, and out door seating. Usually around this time of year one of the seasonal items is the Brussel sprouts but they haven't made an appearance this year. Instead they had Parmesan garlic fries which sound amazing! I got them and guess what?! They are NOT amazing. They were a greasy, oily mess with garlic and some (I will give them credit) shredded parmesan. Trying to salvage this atrocity I dumped the fries in the bag and shook them up so the fries would be evenly coated with both garlic and parmesan. Did this improve them? Nope! There was no saving these sad, soggy, greasy and some how flavorless fries. I had the salted caramel shake (no whip, no cherry) and it was tasty. Best if shared unless you like a lot of sweet.
