I made a reservation for 5:30 and the restaurant was fairly empty, but eventually filled up by around 6pm! The vibes inside are like french bistro! The service was great! Our waiter checked in on us the appropriate amount and was very kind! We ordered escargots to start and they were well cooked and buttery! I got the mussels and fries. They gave so many mussels and a lot of fries. The mussels were in a delicious white wine broth. My partner got the steak au poivre and it was cooked extremely well. Super tender! We ended our meal with the profiteroles which we saw seemed to be the star dessert on yelp! It was refreshing and the chocolate seemed to be as if they made it themselves! The beauty of international travel is being able to explore culture through its food. I went on 2.5week trip to France last year and grew a new appreciation for the French cuisine. Once I return to the states, I was always on the lookout for authentic French food which I became a keenly aware pretty quickly is a rare find even in Southern California. I was relieved to stumble upon bouillon in Newport Beach. The name alone says it all and seeing a boulangerie around the corner quickly won my heart. Walking into bouillon felt like walking into cafe in Paris. From the signage, chairs and iron tables I was quickly transported back. Reviewing the menu, I quickly knew I was in the right spot and giggled with excitement. I ordered all my favorite straight away; escargot, steak tartare with frites (you must add the egg yolk!), lyonnaise salad (on the menu it's listed as Salade Frisée aux lardon, lyonnaise is a regional name but I know the ingredients), a bottle of Sancerre, soufflé and two espresso. The meal was fantastic, so elegant, refined but made with simple ingredients you can taste. The service was leisurely and impeccable, the waitress was so knowledgeable and welcoming. Most people in the OC are more familiar with the chain bakery Moulin which serves French quick fair but the star of the show is certainly bouillon. They have a fabulous menu for those that missing truly authentic or for folks interested to try new French meals . Great selection of wines from different French regions that are affordable (in France is not about the price tag but more on the region it grew from). Menu has classic French dishes and wine. For starters we got a terrine, for the main I got the trout and hubby got the duck. We also got wine and apple tart for dessert. We loved everything about our lunch at Bouillon. Cutest diner with all things French. Loving the furnishings and decor, that you can actually purchase at their little shop down the walkway. Let me tell you about it. The bread basket - was divine. It came with French butter too. Served warm and that rustic crunchy crust was perfect. I'm convinced you can survive on bread and butter. However, we didn't stop here. Salad frisée aux pardons - frisée lettuce, smoked bacon, one poached egg, croutons, sherry vinaigrette - a beautiful blend of fatty proteins which helps the mineral absorption of the vegetables. Tartare du saumon - salmon tartare with avocado, capers, cornichons, yuzu mayo, scallions, and micro herbs. Served with toasted baguette. Loved every bite. Les moules mariniere - mussels in white wine butter shallots, garlic and parsley broth. Served with fries. Typical French dish that should always be ordered. I think the broth would have been awesome with an extra side of angel hair or any pasta. Husband and I don't like to see anything food wasted, especially this! Delicious! Truite amandine - seared fresh trout, served with green beans, steamed potatoes, and meuniere almond sauce. Very balanced and healthy. Food was overall very good. We ordered French onion soup, salmon tartare, deviled eggs, and mussels in white wine broth to start. Every dish was savory and tasty, but they can also be more on the rich side because they use more butter and cream- which is understandable for French cuisine. For our main dishes, we had steak frites, salmon and chicken entrees. Steak was tender and cooked perfectly, and both the salmon and chicken entrees were moist and flavorful. My only callout would be that I wished the salmon wasn't sitting in so much tomato sauce. We also had profiteroles and chocolate soufflé for dessert, and they were so decadent and delicious! Service was great. Our waiter was very nice, polite and attentive despite having to wait on so many other tables around us. Ambience was interesting because it can be quite charming with all the French artworks and decorations, but yet it didn't feel cozy. The building space seemed like it could've been for an office or a shop. Also, some of the tables were very close together with seats lined against the walls, so it was a bit uncomfortable sitting so close to other diners. Price and portion sizes were very fair. On this visit, I tried Bouillon, which is their more classic French fare concept in a cute, artsy, diner-style space that genuinely feels like a little escape back to Paris. Service was impeccable-super friendly staff who checked in just the right amount without ever feeling overbearing. Food breakdown: Escargot: 7/10 Good overall, but there was something slightly off for me that I can't fully place. It had a subtle sweetness that leaned a bit away from the classic parsley-garlic profile I'm used to. Still enjoyable, just a bit different from what I expected. French Onion Soup: 8/10 Really well executed. Deep, rich, and flavourful broth with a generous amount of onion. Lapin (Rabbit): 6.5/10 Not something you see often on menus. The rabbit itself was cooked perfectly, but the overall dish felt a bit underwhelming in flavour. The accompaniments didn't add much, and the portion didn't quite justify the price. Still good, but probably not something I'd reorder. Canard (Duck): 9/10 Easily the standout of the meal. One of the best takes on duck a l'orange I've had. Came here for a weekday lunch and while the servers were nice and I especially enjoyed one dish, I'm not sure if I'd go here again over trying out a new/different local French spot. I enjoyed being able to have Kir Royal and their Pouilly-Fuisse was good (but why no options for a Chablis?), but their escargot came with the SMALLEST amount of oil and garlic and didn't even come with slices of baguette until I asked - and was then charged extra for it. How shameful! Their salmon tartare was delicious but having an underwhelming and disappointing escargot ruined this spot for me. Also, the overhead bar lights are WAY too bright - I'm trying to eat and read, not perform open heart surgery. read more

Came in for lunch today and our server, a young guy with short black hair, greeted us warmly and had a friendly, engaging energy that set a nice tone, so we were excited to be there! We ordered several things, and I was deliberate when ordering the entrecôte - I asked for medium and made a point of saying please don't overcook it. It came out overcooked. Our server did offer to have it remade, which I appreciated, but by that point, I had already filled up on everything else at the table. What I noticed after that was a shift in his attention. He seemed to redirect his energy toward a large, lively French party that had come in and were clearly having a celebration. The wine was flowing and the energy was high, and I get the appeal of that table. But we were still there, still his guests, and the attentiveness that made the beginning of the meal feel welcoming didn't quite carry through to the end. My family lived in Paris for a while, so we absolutely love French food. Lately, we've been obsessed with this place called Bouillon Newport--it's the authentic French bistro in OC. The overall restaurant design replicates the classic Parisian Bouillon style. From what the staff told us, all the dishes are made with fresh ingredients purchased daily, prepared on the spot, and they sell out once they're gone! That's why they're known as "the Best Traditional French Restaurant in OC." The service is also incredibly thoughtful, genuine, and welcoming. Everyone on staff speaks French. This time we tried the Confit de Canard (tender and juicy), Escargots, Leg de Lapin, Beef Bourguignon (the tagliatelle it came with was so flavorful), Steak Frites (served with either pepper sauce or Bearnaise sauce), and the Salmon. Dinner at Moulin Bouillon felt like stepping into a neighborhood bistro in Paris--right down to the French waitstaff, effortless hospitality, and unapologetically classic execution. All that was missing was me butchering the language while ordering (which I absolutely did). We ordered across savory and sweet, and every dish stayed true to traditional French technique. The steak frites with butter was simple, indulgent, and executed exactly as it should be--perfectly cooked steak, rich butter, crisp fries. No reinvention needed when something is already perfect. The trout amandin was delicate and refined, with thoughtful execution that let the fish shine. Understated in the best way--quietly excellent. Dessert delivered. The profiteroles were light with just the right richness from the dark chocolate, while the pavlova was airy, balanced, and not overly sweet--an elegant finish that didn't leave us in a sugar coma. I ordered the duck confit and peppercorn steak & frites to-go. Who orders a duck to-go? A dad with kids on the go. My expectations are always high for French food and they were met here. Always hard to judge presentation in to-go boxes. But they carefully separated everything out, and the items being concealed for a few minutes didn't soggify (I made that one up too) any of the items as far as I could tell. Duck - tasty, but a little too salty. Came with what looked like pesto noodles but were actually thinly shaved cucumber. What a healthy carb replacement. Move over cauliflower rice! Steak - a little bloody for medium well but still hit the spot. The creamy peppercorn sauce complemented it nicely. I'm not a big fan of the thick steak fries as I prefer thinner the better but these were yummy. And did I mention these were ready in a jippy, felt no more than 10 min. Really sad to see how much this place has gone downhill. Aside from the bread and our server, nothing was good. Okay, our salads were passable, but our entrees were awful. My duck was greasy and mostly fat and bones. The accompanying vegetables were dreadful. The other entree, salmon was also terrible. The entire top of the fish was the unappetizing grey flesh which should be trimmed off in the kitchen. The fish was swimming in tomato sauce, and the accompanying vegetables were few and hard to find in the sauce. Even the floating island dessert which I had loved in the past was awful...the meringue was a strange mushy consistency and the "gelato" was likely scooped from a grocery store container. This meal was awful, and with a few glasses of house wine cost us $230! We'll definitely not be returning. read more

After finishing up at RX Fitness I asked if they recommend a place to eat and they told us about this restaurant just a block away. They appear to have several related businesses in this plaza. Bouillon is the full service restaurant. Next door is a more casual cafe and there's even a bakery. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here. Smelled delicious as soon as you walked in and all the staff was inviting even though my wife and I were sweaty and disheveled from trying out fitness equipment. Our waiter was great with suggestions and wine pairings. We both started with Soupe à L'Oignon which was a thing of beauty. Rich and hearty it's exactly what I was craving. The giant blanket of cheese was decadent. We also had an order of baguette with French butter which was great for dipping into the soup. For my entree I had the Saumon Ratatouille which was pan seared salmon served with a traditional Ratatouille. The salmon was truly perfection. The skin was so crispy yet the fish melt in your mouth tender. The ratatouille along with a green topping that I am guessing was garlic and parsley was a match made in heaven. My wife had the Hachis Parmentier which was like a Sheppard's pie. Overnight braised beef, layered with mashed potatoes, topped with breadcrumb and Emmental Swiss cheese. We had a French server, or so I'd assume he is French because of his accent. He was so friendly and made the best recommendations based on what we told him we liked. The place feels like a mix of a sit-down boulangerie or patisserie and a casual restaurant. It's not overly chic but had character. Tables are pretty small so if you are ordering a lot, be mindful of the space. The food is delicious. I especially loved the baked Camembert, pavlova and their house bread! The escargot is pretty good too. I just liked the one from Antoine's in New Orleans more. We knew the moment the fresh bread came out with the French butter that this place would hit the spot. The food here was très délicieux! It was my first time dining in this specific plaza and Bouillon did not disappoint. We started with a cheesy french onion soup and escargot. I can't remember the last time i've had escargot; the name may be offputting but it's really not much different from clams and mussels in terms of texture. Plus, it is covered in so much buttery sauce that you won't even recognize it. The mains were the classic beef stew and an amazingly tender roasted chicken jidori, which was my favorite dish of the meal. I basically ate the plate clean, sauce and potato puree included. The interior was simple and clean. The service was good and the food came relatively quick. The entrees came before we finished eating the appetizers and we had ordered the entrees later. An amazing place for some French food! I've been here a few times and I absolutely love the bread and the little French butter rolls that come with it! Make sure to save the bread if you plan to order escargot! I use the bread to soak up the yummy herbs and oil from the escargot. The carnard a l'orange was delicious! A very balanced flavor with duck that was smoky and tangy. The boeuf bourguignon was a miss this time around. I've had it before and it was delicious but this time around it was a little heavy handed on the wine flavoring as it was all I could taste and it only came with 1 singular pearl onion. For dessert we got a caramel apple tart of some sorts with ice cream. It was delicious and not too sweet! Service was quick and friendly. Decor takes you out of Orange County and you feel like you're on vacation again for a bit. The owner gave us complimentary glasses of wine, which was incredibly nice. We also love their bakeries (but that's another review for another day). I don't recall the name of what was ordered. I do remember that everything was rich in flavor and absolutely delicious. I still think about it. They have seasonal items on the menu, so I suggest trying that if you feel adventurous. You can always ask your server like we did and he suggested some great things. I don't know what went wrong there, but something changed for sure. They're normally amazing but we just went there for lunch and it was absolutely terrible. The Mother's Day menu they were serving for the weekend was extremely disappointing. Of all the dishes we ordered, the frog legs were the only thing that was pretty okay. The scallop risotto was particularly bad, it was as if it was prepared by an amateur, not a professional. And aside from the food, the bathrooms were in a sad state, with trash on the ground (even outside leading to the restroom area), trash piled in the trashcan making it impossible to reach the paper towels, something really unbefitting of a restaurant on this price range. I've been coming here for years and I'm sad to say I don't know if I'll be back for quite a while considering how bad it was today. The way they used to be, I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. One other thing I forgot to mention that seemed very odd for a French restaurant-and service in general in the US, is the lack of protocol. Specifically, why were the plates cleared before everyone was done eating? This is the last thing I would have expected in Bouillon, but it happened, and it irritates me every time it happens anywhere else we eat! Seems like there is little to no staff training these days in this matter of protocol, and it makes people feel hurried and uncomfortable. I hope management can take care of this. read more
