We loved everything about our lunch at Bouillon. Cutest diner with all things French. Loving the furnishings and decor, that you can actually purchase at their little shop down the walkway. Let me tell you about it. The bread basket - was divine. It came with French butter too. Served warm and that rustic crunchy crust was perfect. I'm convinced you can survive on bread and butter. However, we didn't stop here. Salad frisée aux pardons - frisée lettuce, smoked bacon, one poached egg, croutons, sherry vinaigrette - a beautiful blend of fatty proteins which helps the mineral absorption of the vegetables. Tartare du saumon - salmon tartare with avocado, capers, cornichons, yuzu mayo, scallions, and micro herbs. Served with toasted baguette. Loved every bite. Les moules mariniere - mussels in white wine butter shallots, garlic and parsley broth. Served with fries. Typical French dish that should always be ordered. I think the broth would have been awesome with an extra side of angel hair or any pasta. Husband and I don't like to see anything food wasted, especially this! Delicious! Truite amandine - seared fresh trout, served with green beans, steamed potatoes, and meuniere almond sauce. Very balanced and healthy. Terrine de campagne - homemade pork and duck pate, served with cornichons, pickled shallots, toasted baguette slices. There is nothing better than homemade pate, nothing! For dessert, we chose the cheese plate, with grapes, walnuts, fig jam, toasted baguette. We paired all this with some Bordeaux. C'est magnifique! Truly a meal to remember. Food was overall very good. We ordered French onion soup, salmon tartare, deviled eggs, and mussels in white wine broth to start. Every dish was savory and tasty, but they can also be more on the rich side because they use more butter and cream- which is understandable for French cuisine. For our main dishes, we had steak frites, salmon and chicken entrees. Steak was tender and cooked perfectly, and both the salmon and chicken entrees were moist and flavorful. My only callout would be that I wished the salmon wasn't sitting in so much tomato sauce. We also had profiteroles and chocolate soufflé for dessert, and they were so decadent and delicious! Service was great. Our waiter was very nice, polite and attentive despite having to wait on so many other tables around us. Ambience was interesting because it can be quite charming with all the French artworks and decorations, but yet it didn't feel cozy. The building space seemed like it could've been for an office or a shop. Also, some of the tables were very close together with seats lined against the walls, so it was a bit uncomfortable sitting so close to other diners. Price and portion sizes were very fair. Food breakdown: Escargot: 7/10 Good overall, but there was something slightly off for me that I can't fully place. It had a subtle sweetness that leaned a bit away from the classic parsley-garlic profile I'm used to. Still enjoyable, just a bit different from what I expected. French Onion Soup: 8/10 Really well executed. Deep, rich, and flavourful broth with a generous amount of onion. Lapin (Rabbit): 6.5/10 Not something you see often on menus. The rabbit itself was cooked perfectly, but the overall dish felt a bit underwhelming in flavour. The accompaniments didn't add much, and the portion didn't quite justify the price. Still good, but probably not something I'd reorder. Canard (Duck): 9/10 Easily the standout of the meal. One of the best takes on duck a l'orange I've had. Came here for a weekday lunch and while the servers were nice and I especially enjoyed one dish, I'm not sure if I'd go here again over trying out a new/different local French spot. I enjoyed being able to have Kir Royal and their Pouilly-Fuisse was good (but why no options for a Chablis?), but their escargot came with the SMALLEST amount of oil and garlic and didn't even come with slices of baguette until I asked - and was then charged extra for it. How shameful! Their salmon tartare was delicious but having an underwhelming and disappointing escargot ruined this spot for me. My family lived in Paris for a while, so we absolutely love French food. Lately, we've been obsessed with this place called Bouillon Newport--it's the authentic French bistro in OC. The overall restaurant design replicates the classic Parisian Bouillon style. From what the staff told us, all the dishes are made with fresh ingredients purchased daily, prepared on the spot, and they sell out once they're gone! That's why they're known as "the Best Traditional French Restaurant in OC." The service is also incredibly thoughtful, genuine, and welcoming. Everyone on staff speaks French. This time we tried the Confit de Canard (tender and juicy), Escargots, Leg de Lapin, Beef Bourguignon (the tagliatelle it came with was so flavorful), Steak Frites (served with either pepper sauce or Bearnaise sauce), and the Salmon. Dinner at Moulin Bouillon felt like stepping into a neighborhood bistro in Paris--right down to the French waitstaff, effortless hospitality, and unapologetically classic execution. All that was missing was me butchering the language while ordering (which I absolutely did). We ordered across savory and sweet, and every dish stayed true to traditional French technique. The steak frites with butter was simple, indulgent, and executed exactly as it should be--perfectly cooked steak, rich butter, crisp fries. No reinvention needed when something is already perfect. The trout amandin was delicate and refined, with thoughtful execution that let the fish shine. Understated in the best way--quietly excellent. Dessert delivered. The profiteroles were light with just the right richness from the dark chocolate, while the pavlova was airy, balanced, and not overly sweet--an elegant finish that didn't leave us in a sugar coma. I don't know what went wrong there, but something changed for sure. They're normally amazing but we just went there for lunch and it was absolutely terrible. The Mother's Day menu they were serving for the weekend was extremely disappointing. Of all the dishes we ordered, the frog legs were the only thing that was pretty okay. The scallop risotto was particularly bad, it was as if it was prepared by an amateur, not a professional. And aside from the food, the bathrooms were in a sad state, with trash on the ground (even outside leading to the restroom area), trash piled in the trashcan making it impossible to reach the paper towels, something really unbefitting of a restaurant on this price range. I've been coming here for years and I'm sad to say I don't know if I'll be back for quite a while considering how bad it was today. The way they used to be, I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. After finishing up at RX Fitness I asked if they recommend a place to eat and they told us about this restaurant just a block away. They appear to have several related businesses in this plaza. Bouillon is the full service restaurant. Next door is a more casual cafe and there's even a bakery. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here. Smelled delicious as soon as you walked in and all the staff was inviting even though my wife and I were sweaty and disheveled from trying out fitness equipment. Our waiter was great with suggestions and wine pairings. We both started with Soupe à L'Oignon which was a thing of beauty. Rich and hearty it's exactly what I was craving. The giant blanket of cheese was decadent. We also had an order of baguette with French butter which was great for dipping into the soup. For my entree I had the Saumon Ratatouille which was pan seared salmon served with a traditional Ratatouille. The salmon was truly perfection. The skin was so crispy yet the fish melt in your mouth tender. The ratatouille along with a green topping that I am guessing was garlic and parsley was a match made in heaven. My wife had the Hachis Parmentier which was like a Sheppard's pie. Overnight braised beef, layered with mashed potatoes, topped with breadcrumb and Emmental Swiss cheese. We had a French server, or so I'd assume he is French because of his accent. He was so friendly and made the best recommendations based on what we told him we liked. The place feels like a mix of a sit-down boulangerie or patisserie and a casual restaurant. It's not overly chic but had character. Tables are pretty small so if you are ordering a lot, be mindful of the space. The food is delicious. I especially loved the baked Camembert, pavlova and their house bread! The food here was très délicieux! It was my first time dining in this specific plaza and Bouillon did not disappoint. We started with a cheesy french onion soup and escargot. I can't remember the last time i've had escargot; the name may be offputting but it's really not much different from clams and mussels in terms of texture. Plus, it is covered in so much buttery sauce that you won't even recognize it. The mains were the classic beef stew and an amazingly tender roasted chicken jidori, which was my favorite dish of the meal. I basically ate the plate clean, sauce and potato puree included. An amazing place for some French food! I've been here a few times and I absolutely love the bread and the little French butter rolls that come with it! Make sure to save the bread if you plan to order escargot! I use the bread to soak up the yummy herbs and oil from the escargot. The carnard a l'orange was delicious! A very balanced flavor with duck that was smoky and tangy. The boeuf bourguignon was a miss this time around. I've had it before and it was delicious but this time around it was a little heavy handed on the wine flavoring as it was all I could taste and it only came with 1 singular pearl onion. I ordered the duck confit and peppercorn steak & frites to-go. Who orders a duck to-go? A dad with kids on the go. My expectations are always high for French food and they were met here. Always hard to judge presentation in to-go boxes. Duck - tasty, but a little too salty. Came with what looked like pesto noodles but were actually thinly shaved cucumber. What a healthy carb replacement. Move over cauliflower rice! Steak - a little bloody for medium well but still hit the spot. The creamy peppercorn sauce complemented it nicely. I'm not a big fan of the thick steak fries as I prefer thinner the better but these were yummy. And did I mention these were ready in a jippy, felt no more than 10 min. Decor takes you out of Orange County and you feel like you're on vacation again for a bit. The owner gave us complimentary glasses of wine, which was incredibly nice. We also love their bakeries (but that's another review for another day). I don't recall the name of what was ordered. I do remember that everything was rich in flavor and absolutely delicious. The sea bream filet drizzled of beurre blanc to add a tangy richness along w/ the creamy spinach never failed my appetite. I usually enjoy dining here and I've always had good experiences, which is why I was very disappointed with the service today from one of the young server. She took our order without writing anything down and ended up forgetting part of the food. We had to wave her down just to remind her about the missing item. When we asked for napkins, she brought them over and tossed them onto the bread basket, which felt very disrespectful. Most of the time, she was standing in the back chatting with other employees instead of paying attention to customers. We even had to ask for the check ourselves. After I paid and left no tip due to the poor service, I overheard her telling other employees that I was "cheap." I want to make it clear that I am always willing to tip for good service, and I actually tip here regularly because I normally enjoy this restaurant. Tipping should reflect the level of service received, and unfortunately today's experience did not deserve one. read more

This is a great place! The 3 stores here in this complex the bakery, this restaurant and the shop are all so fun! This restaurant was beautifully decorated and all the staff are dressed wonderfully! Feels very French! We started with the bread and butter which was so fresh and airy, very good. We then moved onto the escargot which was good, I have had better in Paris but hey this was very nice and hit the spot! I then had the steak frites which was very good perfectly cooked and tender and the fries were very nice as well. My wife had the duck special and that too was very good. I did splurge and finish with the raspberry sorbet very refreshing! Our waiter was phenomenal, he clearly enjoyed his job and was a fun time. Now you're wondering why this didn't get 5 stars!? The portions! This place is pricey and the portions are just small, the food is good but you may leave hungry! One other thing I forgot to mention that seemed very odd for a French restaurant-and service in general in the US, is the lack of protocol. Specifically, why were the plates cleared before everyone was done eating? This is the last thing I would have expected in Bouillon, but it happened, and it irritates me every time it happens anywhere else we eat! I am a regular at the Moulin Cafe locations throughout Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and San Clemente. This was our Valentine's Day. We were looking to have a French dinner. It was fantastic. We started with the French onion soup, which had a rich broth and was topped with plenty of melted cheese and a soaked baguette. The cheese seemed a little over caramelized, but still tasted fine. We then had the goat cheese salad, which we thought was delicious overall, but it was slightly overdressed for our liking. And the portion we felt was a little small for the price/value. Our main, we decided to share the hanger steak with fries and salad. We probably would've opted to get a different starter because we forgot that this came with a salad. The steak was perfectly cooked medium. The fries were hot and crisp throughout the meal as the plate was also heated. The salad was also good for a simple green salad. We finished our meal with the apple tartin which was phenomenal. We wish it had a little bit more ice cream and a little bit more caramel but nonetheless, it was fantastic. We would definitely order that and the other items again. Service was very friendly and efficient. Plenty of parking out front we made a reservation before we dined obviously. Inside it feels like a true French café. There were two or three bistro tables outside that due to the weather were not being utilized, but it definitely reminded me of being in France. Eeeeh, I don't know... I'll be honest and say that French cuisine is not what I typically go for, but my family wanted to have dinner one night. The interior decor was interesting with all the posters and signs, but I didn't care too much for our table and seats. They had a guitar player and singer playing some old hits which was a perfect add to the ambiance - some background music but not so loud that you can't hold conversations. Now on to the food: Escargots - I don't think I'm the biggest fan of this kind of dish anyway, but I'd say they executed it pretty well. Deep Fried Frog Legs - Just not interesting. It's like fried chicken with less meat. Salade Frisee - Honestly the best thing on their menu. The greens with that dressing was so addicting. Beef Stew w/ Pasta - My family liked this but I thought the sauce was pretty boring. Canard a L'Orange - This is what I ordered - decently tasty. Very disappointed. One of our first dates was here. So for my now husbands birthday we returned. The server forgot that I ordered escargot. My steak tar tar was so overstuffed and over flavored with ingredients that the taste of beef was no longer present. I order this dish in France almost daily on my trips and in most restaurants which offer it. It's a very thin line between adding things to the beef to compliment the dish or to practically pickle it and have the ingredients overpower it. It was definitely overpowered. My husband didn't enjoy the fries and the stake was rather chewy. French onion soup was delicious and so was the bread. I've been here a few times now and always had a good experience. I was in the area again and decided to stop by on a busy Sunday afternoon. If you come on a weekday it's a more relaxed ambiance but weekends seem to be busier and louder. Even though the restaurant was nearly full, we were seated fairly quickly and our server explained the specials. We ordered the terrine de campagne and the escargots to start. Both were delicious. The pâté was great on the sliced bread, and the escargots with parsley, garlic and almond hazelnut butter had that classic savory flavor. Both dishes tasted quite authentic. The only thing I would change is to have softer, non-toasted bread for the escargots so it can soak up more of the sauce. For the entrees, I ordered the poulet Cordon Bleu which was the daily special, and my friend got the daurade pommes vapeur. The poulet Cordon Bleu was cooked perfectly and honestly felt like it was made "dans les règles de l'art" which was a nice surprise. I think the Cordon Bleu would be proud. It came on a bed of green beans with a small potato gratin. The daurade pommes vapeur is something I have gotten before and my friend really enjoyed it too. The fish skin is crispy and the meat goes well with the paired sauce. It comes with three baby potatoes and creamed spinach. Also, it travels well when ordered for delivery. We were too full for dessert, but I noticed the menu now has two new options that I plan to try next time. I also recommend the steak frites or the boeuf bourguignon if you want something classic. Moulin and Bouillon are irritating because so much potential but the food ALWAYS falls short... I've tried these two related restaurants weekly over the past month... and ugh Most recently I dined at Bouillon for lunch. Dining here reminded me of an airport restaurant... steep prices without the food to match. The design of the place is a gimmick meant to look European. I ordered the hanger steak with peppercorn sauce, fries and a salad. I was not offered bread or tap water at any point. The dish came out in a timely fashion and looked good, however, one bite made me consider sending the plate back. The steak was half medium rare and half well done. It had no flavor, lacked basic seasoning like salt. When you were little did you ever fill your mouth with chewing gum just to see how many pieces you could chew? That's exactly what biting into this steak was like ... shoe leather ... so chewy my jaw hurt. No one asked how my dish was or why I left half the steak on the plate when I asked for the check. They did however make sure to ask for a tip while standing at the table.
