Came in today to pick up two simple things and walked away frustrated by both interactions. First was a gift card. The lady who helped me - dark hair, really overly colorful eye makeup, and tattoos - processed the transaction but handed me the card without a receipt. When I asked for one, she spent a moment at the screen and then told me she couldn't print it because she had already closed out my tab. I was confused why 1) she didn't give me a receipt in the first place, then 2) she decided that was the only solution - to tell me it could not be done. After I asked her to find a solution as I needed a copy of the receipt, she finally asked her colleague beside her, who pointed her to the right place, and, voila, the receipt was printed. Leading with "I can't" is never the right customer service instinct, especially for something as basic as a receipt. I also tried to buy the butter they import from France. I stood at the case for several minutes with no acknowledgment. I finally walked over to the nearest employee (her name was Lucy) who was finishing up with a customer at the register right next to the butter section. I politely asked if she could help me when she was free. She looked at me, nodded, and said she would. Then proceeded to assist every customer who lined up behind that original customer without once glancing back in my direction. In fact, I had enough time to walk to the bakery, go through the entire gift card situation as mentioned above, and return to the butter section, and Lucy still hadn't looked over. I left without the butter. Moulin used to have fantastic service. I don't know where those regulars went, but two strikes in one visit, with two different employees, is hard to brush off. read more

Moulin is a really nice cafe and patisserie in Newport, near John Wayne airport. The desserts look stunning and they're tasty. They have a tempting assortment of fresh breads, baguettes, sandwiches, and cheeses. I also like that they have a boulangerie (bread bakery) and bistro in the same plaza. The bistro a few spaces down has some excellent dinner options, but that's technically a different restaurant. I like to come here when I want to select from a broad assortment of French pastries; however it's not my top choice for any specific thing. But it's really nice to come in on a morning for jambon and cheese on a fresh baguette. On this morning, I was able to drink a coffee and eat a salted caramel macaron, while watching a World Cup soccer match. The ham and cheese sandwich was good but very salty and greasy. I don't think I will try it again but that's because I have recently been more sensitive to salt. The coffee in the cup was delicious and great because I love enjoying coffee in a real cup not in paper cups. Their croissant is delicious and my friend said they make things the way real French do. While parking can be a little difficult in this busy shopping center, I recommend coming here early to beat the crowd. SO GLAD I DID On their website, they have a lovely little guide that gives you all the details along with illustrations of the cakes as there are a ton of layers. There were so many great options, but I opted for the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake (chocolate sponge, hazelnut praline crunchy, chocolate cremeux, candied hazelnuts, milk chocolate mousse, milk chocolate glaze). THIS CAKE WAS PERFECTION I called two days ahead to order and ended up speaking with the manager (I believe her name is Katia) and she was so friendly and kind! I picked a cake, added a chocolate plaque, and paid by phone. Nice and easy! The day of, the cake was ready to go. I was in and out of there in a minute and the workers were so kind. It was also Halloween and they even complimented my costume haha The cake was GORGEOUS! OMG When I pulled it out of the box, everyone said wooooow THE CAKE WAS AMAZING!! The layers! I ate it layer by layer just to try and understand how all the flavors came together. It was truly a beautifully created cake. I've been saving my milestone review for this place, and Moulin deserves the 300th. This review is loooooong overdue. There's so much to love about this place that this may read like a diary entry; so buckle up, because I'm about to wax poetic about Moulin. I've been frequenting Moulin for nearly a decade, ever since my mom and I began our search for the perfect French baguette in Orange County. No place has ever come close. The baguette traditionnelle and pain d'épi are unmatched: the crumb is perfect, the chew is just right, and there's that subtle tang that transports you back to France. We'll often stop by and grab 3-4 baguettes at a time to enjoy breakfast at home with some great French butter and good cheese. Moulin's selection of French imports is extensive: caviar, pâté, butter, saucisson, regional fromages, champagne, wine and more! My go-to sandwich is the jambon beurre or jambon fromage, but if you're in the mood for something warm, the parigot/panini options (go for chicken pesto or jambon fromage) are excellent and heated up upon order. I've visited the Costa Mesa (SoCo and South Coast) and Dana Point locations, but the Newport Beach location reigns supreme. The courtyard and outdoor terrace are the crown highlights; there's nothing quite like it in Orange County. I've brought countless friends here, introduced my boyfriend to Moulin, and now it's our place. Our favorite spot is right next to the fountain, and the ambiance genuinely feels like a Parisian café. The bakery alone is reason enough to visit: flawless lamination, the best croissant beurre, pain au chocolat, and pain aux raisins. Perfectly buttery and flakey. Although I still haven't tried their GIANT croissant (only available Saturdays). Most mornings, we'll enjoy a croissant beurre and pain au chocolat with unlimited drip coffee, or grab a baguette to make a DIY tartine beurre et confiture. Sometimes we even save it to saucer le plat after a bistro meal. This is the life. Moulin is also deeply tied to some of my favorite memories: my 21st birthday brunch, Galentine's celebrations, watching France defeat Portugal in a thrilling penalty shootout during the UEFA 2024 quarterfinals, and, bien sûr, the Summer Olympics! It truly feels like a community here, and I love that they roll out the TV for national events. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, and there's never any trouble finding a seat: they'll happily set up a table for you. I remember when there were indoor tables and when the chèvre chaud salad and charcuterie board were staples on the menu. While those were once my go-tos, I now rotated through new favorites: the French onion soup, rotisserie chicken, scalloped potato gratin, vol-au-vent, brisket, and the céleri rémoulade from the café deli. The ham and cheese croissant is absolutely sinful, here is simply no better one. Yes, it can be pricey, but where else can you find céleri rémoulade or a dozen chouquettes done right? On the pâtisserie side, there truly is something for everyone. I'm not usually a tarte person, but Moulin's selection of French pastries and gâteaux changes seasonally and never disappoints. My personal favorite is the flan nature, which is so rich, custardy, and bursting with sublime vanilla flavor. Some days I'll spend hours here until closing; other times I'll stop in for a quick pastry or pick up a baguette for my parents. I'll probably have Moulin cater my wedding. What an amazing Bakery shop in Newport Beach. There are so many delicious pastries, pies, cake, cookies to choose from. They even have all day menu items: Crepes, Salad, Sandwiches, Breakfast items, Soup, Wine, Tea, Coffee, and etc. I purchased several bday pastries, tarts, and mini cakes. I loved drinking the fresh Orange Juice. This location is always packed during the busy lunch hours. I will need to come back and try the popular entrees in the near future. Seating wasn't great, but I managed to snag a tiny table and pull up an extra chair. We got orange juice and champagne for mimosas, and three French Onion Soups. I was a little disappointed at the quality and the quantity of the soup for the price tag, but the folks working that Sunday afternoon were doing their best. Still, for the steep pricing (plus tip!) The ambiance is great with some French music in the background and a very pleasant and large patio. I have tried their breakfast, brunch type food and everything is delicious. I also take some pastries to go or some of the goodies they have like packaged cookies. Yes it's on the pricey side but you get what you pay for: high quality fresh food. I loved visiting this place! It felt like a little piece of France. From the bakery to the deli to the packaged goods they were selling, I felt a bit transported. Overall, the food was just OK- I wasn't really blown away by anything but we ordered some items from the ready-made area like baguette sandwiches but also got a crepe and croque madame. They were all good but nothing that blew me away. I also ordered a cake for my husband's birthday from the bakery/patisserie area and that WAS amazing. It was very fresh, the creme was delicious and light and I could see TONS of vanilla beans. You can tell that everything they use is very high quality. There is ample seating outside and luckily we went on a sunny day. It was extremely busy but getting our food was pretty quick. I am purposely saying this in English to make this a little easier for those who don't speak French. I highly recommend a visit to the bakery for any of their pastries, cakes and small desserts. This is as close as you are going to get to actually being in France. I love stopping at the deli and grabbing a quick bite, which can be eaten out on the outdoor patio area.
