On our last day in Paris, we ate lunch at Bouillon Pigalle. A friend of ours recommended this place for inexpensive French cuisine. The service was decent (a little slow to be honest), and the food itself was decent. I ordered the burgundy beef stew, coquillette pasta, and it's basically beef on macaroni. There wasn't enough sauce to really be a stew in my opinion so the beef was slightly dry. Overall it was okay. It's really one of those "cheap eats for decent food and portion size". One Sweet and one Salty. I need my protein fix so I went with the Salty. Three eggs cooked to order, some ham, and a small salad. I ordered the eggs fried and they were perfect for dipping my bread into the yolk. Both the drinks came with the Salty breakfast plate. Service - Two people were working the front of the house. One of the most affordable places we hit in Paris. You cannot beat the price of the wine. You get so much for so little that it's basically criminal. The escargot is a staple & the salmon rillettes was wonderful. Not a lot of vegetarian options here, but their duck confit was great. The atmosphere is fun & fast pace. For one of my last meals in Paris I decided to go to Bouillon Pigalle since it was only a block away from my Airbnb and had some great looking steaks! And they did not disappoint. I arrived and was sat immediately. As a single diner, I was sat in a booth between a group of four and another single diner. Since it was my third week in Europe, I was used to sitting close to other patrons. They actually offered more space than at other restaurants in the area. I ordered the steak with fries and butter. The classic French steak dish. I also ordered a half of the house white wine. I couldn't resist getting the half because it was one of the lowest prices I have seen for wine in Paris! My food arrived quickly, and I was also given bread with my meal. The fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned. The steak was cooked to perfection. There was a bit too much butter for the steak, but I used the extra for the bread and some of the fries. The house white wine was delicious as well and went very well with the meal! Overall, I loved my experience at Bouillon Pigalle. The service was amazing, the food was delicious, and the prices were right. I will make sure to visit again when I come back to Paris! read more

At first glance, you'd think this place was some kind of tourist trap a few doors down from Moulin Rouge and the rest of the cabarets of Pigalle. But that's not the case at all, it's a genuinely solid and affordable place to gather with friends and enjoy a great meal. It's a huge restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating, so even though you can encounter a queue at busy times, you should be able to find room to sit. There are a lot of familiar French items on their menu--steak frites, tartare, lots of cheeses, etc--as well as affordable wines by the glass and bottle. Overall just OK, but the price was good for Paris. We saw a huge line outside around 7pm so returned around 5:45pm the following evening. There was no line and we were sat right away. The food and service were fine but nothing memorable. We got the cauliflower soup, the French onion soup, and the escargot for a starter. Then the cod gratin and duck confit as a main meal. Located in the 18th Arrondissement, and at the edge of the 9th, it's a very affordable option in the Pigalle area. On a cold winter day, it's Burgundy Beef stew hits the spot. The beef is soft and tender with great flavor and mini macaroni pasta. This seems like a very popular spot, the line was out the door or maybe a lot of other restaurants were closed because it was New Year's Day. If it's busy, the service is slow due to server also working to clear the tables as well serving them. If you're American, the water is not free, you will have to pay. I also don't recommend the Crab Bisque, it is simply sodium liquid with crab flavor and a few salted orange colored crackers on the side. There's literally nothing else in the bisque. Maybe some spices for looks & flavor. If you're just 2 people, you will be sitting THISCLOSE to the couple next to you. My partner literally had to pull the table out for me to get up and use the restroom and you better pray your table neighbor doesn't have Halitosis, because you will definitely get a whiff of it, trust me on that. For an establishment that sits over 125 people, there's only 2 stalls for the ladies restroom. Servers speaks English, so that's a plus. 3 for the location, affordability and English speaking servers. A 13% gratuity is also automatically added to your bill. So... Happy dining! read more

My first Paris dining experience we came for lunch. Crowded, noisy... instant immersion into the culture and I loved seeing it! Food was great, I had the beef burgundy and it was stewy soft and definitely delicious! All the appetizers were great but the heavy marrowbone was the most unique! The egg and mayo was supposedly the star of this joint but while the egg was perfect it needed a bit of something to bring it up to notoriety! Minus one star for the beefsteak, a terrible cut and therefore really tough. Overall I would drop in again to try some more! read more

The general consensus on this place seems to be "touristy but great." I'd maybe knock that down to "touristy but pretty okay." We started with the onion soup and the bisque. Both were fine but unremarkable. For our main course, we had the beefsteak/fries and the salt cod potato mash. The salt cod potato mash was definitely the highlight. I've never had anything like this before. I guess it's like pureed fish and potatoes together. Very satisfying. I will comment that I think they forgot about us at one point. The time between our soup and our main course was pretty long, and when the server eventually came back over, he asked about desert. When we remind him that we hadn't gotten our entrees yet, he rushed off, and things came out soon after. No big deal though. The service was definitely a big highlight of my visit to Bouillon Pigalle! The selection of drinks is very small for a person like me that does not drink alcohol. It is Coke, Orange Juice, and Ice Tea. No sero, No Limonade. The portions are good, and the food is really, really good. I recommend getting the Beeftec avec frites. The atmosphere is great as well! The lighting is ok. It is loud (like most restaurants the size of Bouillon Pigalle.) It is comfortable, it has nice booths and wooden chairs, like a lot of French Restaurants. It also has really good prices. It is not like that L'haurage (I do not know if I spelled it correctly or not) in Avalon, which is like 30 Euros for one steak, here it is around 10 Euros for Steak and French Fries, and this steak is much better than the Steak in Avalon. Came here on a night that wasn't busy at all, asked to be seated in an area with less people (because the tables are so closely packed that you literally have to pull out the entire table to get into the booth side), and was snubbed. Other people were seated there shortly after. Tried to and made eye contact with multiple servers to try to get our order taken, took at least 4 times to get someone to finally come over. By the time a server came over, his attitude was awful. The smirk on his face was enough for me -- we got up and left. I'm not sure how this place is so highly rated and was so busy. Yes, it has inexpensive pricing but the quality of food is poor. The onion soup was basically flavorless brown water topped with shredded, almost melted cheese. The steak is a cheap cut topped with a cold slab of butter and some old French fries. My family and I stumbled onto this restaurant right as we were about to enter the Metro and heard a grumble in our stomachs. The location is super convenient for those of us tourists who've exhausted our legs for the day. The interior of the place resembles an old library or study room and is very well done! Wandering in you're hit with the smell of faint perfume and smoke. As you eye the old leather chairs propped up against the shelves of books, trinkets, and maps, you realize there's a black and white cat purring against your leg. Don't fret, he's a resident. Making your way through the divided bar into the other room modeled after an outdoor/indoor garden, you realize there's a human-sized birdcage...with real canaries. Does the man of my dreams live here? Nah, he's probably down at the Moulin Rouge. To be fair, the food was average and nothing stood out as particularly amazing. We ordered the Cesar Salad, Ribeye Steak, and Beef Steak a la Plancha. They were all aiite. Would I come back? Possibly for drinks or coffee. I went here for dinner before I saw a show at the Moulin Rouge as suggested by a friend who lives in Paris. They suggested this spot as a super trendy and inexpensive place to grab a bite that has been written about in many trendy magazines. It definitely was a trendy spot as there was a huge line out of the place around 8pm (I think it opens for dinner at 6pm). I got lucky and scored a seat right away because I was by myself. I had to wait quite awhile to see a server and by then I had decided I didn't really want anything offered for dinner (it was a lot of heavy dishes and mostly meat- I wasn't that hungry). I decided on a small bottle of rose (about 3 glasses) and a couple of desserts. Yes, multiple desserts ahaha. She came to me after about 20 mins (I didn't mind at this point because I had gotten so lucky to avoid the line) and I began to order. She realized I wasn't ordering a meal and she said "No, not possible, look at the line." I was stunned. I couldn't understand why I couldn't get what I wanted to order and she left me alone for another 30 minutes. By then, I figured what the hell, order the $8.50 Cauliflower Au Gratin and your dessert too. She came by and still hadn't put in my drink order! A word to the wise, I think they want you to order all at once. I don't speak a lick of French so I'm not sure if she was just mean or French... or if I was just American haha. I got my rose, my cauliflower au gratin (it was okay... it was cauliflower in cheese, so yea) and THE MOST AMAZING CHOCOLATE MOUSSE EVER. Order it.. I'm serious. I really liked the feel of this place, it reminded me a lot of my hometown, West Hollywood. Very large open concept with lots of greenery. I loved my seat looking onto the busy street (great people watching) and it's a very short walk to the Moulin Rouge. Best part of the whole experience was the bill was $14.50 total and tip is included. Our French is very weak but his English was okay and on the surface he seemed friendly enough. Sure there was a hint of condescension and what felt at times as making fun at us but we ignored it as par for the course. When the bill came, something didn't feel right. Maybe the way he seemed extra nice, laying it on thick,calling me Boss but something was off. The Bill (it was in French) was definitely higher than expected but not being able to read French it was not easy to find out why. Then after closer examination we noticed there were 5 double charges of entrees. Instead of the bill being $110 it was $150. When we called him over to explain the over charges, he couldn't think of anything and muttered some nonsense of the manager putting the orders in wrong. No legitimate answer what so ever. My mother in law said when he came back he looked like a man who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Also his hands were shaking so much he couldn't process the credit card. TLDR: Must try bouef bouignon and duck confit. Really good value for its price. Is it the best French restaurant in Paris? Absolutely no. I wouldn't rate it so highly if I based my review on quality of food alone. However, it's probably the best French food you can get for the value. Had boeuf bourguignon with macaroni, duck confit with potato fritters, escargot with parsley butter, onion soup, foie gras, black pudding with mash, and salted cod with mash. Foie Gras - You are not getting a fancy foie gras here. At most, these are the ones they sell in cans. I ordered it just to see the difference between top grade foie gras and to have my girlfriend try it. So in a way, I knowingly ordered a bad dish. Don't recommend. Escargot with parsley butter - Was actually very surprised with the dish. It certainly isn't the best escargot, but parsley butter really covered it well. Not like I would know what best escargot would taste like anyway. If you don't like butter, stay away from this dish(or from France in general). For 6 euros, it's actually a pretty good experience. - 7/10 Soup a l'oignon - To me, this dish is the best example of what this restaurant is supposed to be. We often have this stereotype regarding French cuisine that it's supposed to be fancy, but in reality a lot of French dishes we enjoy all started off as a commoner food, including bouillabaisse and coq au vin. French onion soup is French comfort food. Easy to make and not too expensive. - 6/10. Could use a bit more butter I think, but the price is justifiable in its value. Black pudding with mash - Black pudding was a tad bit salty, but cooked just right so it's not too dry or too undercooked. - 6/10 Salted Cod with mash - I was expecting the cod to be separate from the mash, but they were actually mixed together. To put it simple, it was mashed potato with pieces of cooked cod in it. Presentation was lacking and the fish didn't taste too fresh - 4/10 Duck confit with potato fritters - The duck was cooked beautifully. Very crispy as confit should be. Very tender yet crispy. Potato fritters were also seasoned just right and fried to perfection. Duck grease really went well with it. My girlfriend, who doesn't like duck, actually tried it, and fell in love with it. I could see why when I shared some. - 9/10 Bouef Bouignon - The beef was so tender. It fell apart as soon as you bit into it. The wine smeared into the beef very well. I think my girlfriend would have preferred this dish. Not too salty. I was expecting a bit of stewed carrot or other vegetable as garnish, but it was just beef and macaroni. Still yet, probably the best bouef bouignon I had. - 9/10 If you are expecting fancy dinner like le Ciel de Paris, then it's definitely not your place to go, but definitely a place to go if you want to try different varieties of French dish on a limited budget.
