I called to get general pricing on ring polishing and the guy on the phone said he would have to see my rings which I understand and when I asked him to give me a ball park he was rude to me and did not give an answer. I told him he did not have to speak to me like that I'm just asking him a simple question and he hung up on me and said I should go find someone else. He also said I would have to come in when it's not busy and I asked when is a good time and he couldn't give me an answer and said it's retail. I understand his perspective but as a customer he didn't have to speak with me like that. I was planning on going tomorrow when my wedding is the following day and just trying to inquire for more information. I don't want to waste my time driving to a store and showing up tell me that the cost in out of my budget. The store has a lovely vintage vibe, and the owners are so friendly and knowledgeable. My fiancé got the engagement ring here, and we went back for wedding bands. I fell in love with the ring that has pave diamonds on 3 sides. It's absolutely stunning! This is not your usual jewelry shop. There's lots of fun stuff to look at other than fancy jewelries. I am San Diego native and watch enthusiast who has always gone to a jeweller in Pacific Beach that I trusted. However, it was time for me to find another jeweller closer to me in LJ. I walked into Bowers Jeweller and was met by the friendliest people who were truly wholesome and passionate about what they do. I asked the jeweller to take a couple links out of my vintage Seiko watch. It was a very old and stubborn watch that gave them a very hard time. However, after a bit of time of trying to adjust the difficult and old watch, they fit it to my wrist perfectly. It took them two people to get the watch to cooperate and They explained that typically for what they had to do it would be an expensive charge. Because of this, they actually gave me back the watch with no charge. I was very willing to pay the expensive price due to all the labor it took for them to adjust it. However, their extremely kind gesture and service went a long way in my heart. They certainly earned a customer for life. I highly recommend. read more

I was on a walk and saw this jewelry store. I thought it was such a unique looking place so I went in. It's a very classy and old fashioned store. Almost antique looking but they sell brand new jewelry. I got the most beautiful ring! I was just on a mini trip with my fiancé and wasn't planning on getting anything but I fell in love with their pieces. There was one particular ring that caught my eye and just spoke to me. I asked the employee Chris if I could take the night to think about it and he said of course. That they don't work on commission, explaining that he wants me to love the ring I get and not be disappointed later on. I was really happy that they were not pushy or following me around constantly. They let me know that they were there to help but gave me my space which is just what I like. Plus he listened to me and what I like. I was looking for an opal ring and he started to get an idea of the style I am going for to match my other rings. He showed me rings that fit what I was looking for without being pushy. After awhile he eventually pulled out a simple yellow gold ring with a citrine stone surrounded by diamonds. It was as if it was made for me. I ended up getting my ring the same day because I just fell in love. This place is such a unique place with some of the kindest people I've met. They still charge only $10, which is a 75% discount from a quote I got from a shop on Prospect. And the guy replacing the batteries knows what he's doing, so you don't need to worry about your watch. My husband and I walked in yesterday to have another silver charm soldered onto my bracelet. I had gotten this done in the past here, and it was so quick and easy, took less than 10 mins, and I have even recommended this place to the Bloomingdales Links of London sales associates. But NO! just NO NO NO NO NO! we walked in, this old blonde lady gets up from behind the counter to ask us very nicely what she can help us find. I told her I wanted the charm added, then she scoffed, SCOFFED!!! at me and told me no way, it can't be done. I asked why, thinking they've stopped the service, but instead she CONDESCENDINGLY asked why I couldn't tell it was so busy in her store that there is no way they would have time to service me. I was blown away by how rude she was. I was floored. I went in, looking forward to the friendly faces and service I had experienced before, but wow, not even an ounce of that. What's funny was seeing 3 sales associates standing around with nothing to do. One of them was the guy who soldered my charm last time. it's a shame the business would treat their customers this way. Got a beautiful frame from here as a gift prior to my daughter's birth. Went back after she was born to have it engraved with birth date, weight, etc. and they said they'd call me when it was ready. A month went by and I called and they said to come pick it up. I went to get it, and it hadn't even been touched. Was dusty in a pile in the back. They said come back in two hours. I did and was given the frame with no glass, which I had asked them to replace (I broke it). They said they had no glass that size and started to cut a piece of plastic. I said I see the same frame in the display, can't we use that glass, and they said no. They said they would order it and mail me a piece of replacement glass, no problem. That was two months (and one follow up phone call) ago. I give up. I guess a small frame isn't worth their time. I don't like posting negative reviews, but after multiple trips to the store, and phone calls, I think it is fair to warn potential customers as to how they conduct business. read more

Bowers has been a family owned jeweler in La Jolla since 1945. I know because we looked it up. If at all possible, we support local businesses or the small business. We don't go there every day but when it was time to but a nice men's watch, we wanted to buy from them if they had what we were looking for. As with most jewelers', they will have what you are looking for but it was the time tested expertise in a calm unhurried environment that may remind you of an antique store. Its more than jewelry there as we bought hand painted tin soldiers depicting America's Revolutionary War. They also have estate, antiques and hard to find originals. We found a beautiful CYMA men's watch and waited while Larry gave us tips on care and usage. He cleaned my wife's ring and her watch while we waited. They even provided parking in the rear of the store when we ran out of time on the street. Very happy to support such a great store. read more

Last year we went to Bowers to look for earrings. An employee offered to order a pair we saw in one of his catalogs. We waited for the order to come but after a few weeks...no earrings! When we went to find out what happened he apologized profusely and said he forgot, that sometimes these things happen at this age. He had been 'too busy'. We cancelled that order. We had also discussed about the possibility of bringing some valuables we wanted to sell and appraise. He had told us that he could look at it and explore different venues for resale either by him or others. So we brought a beautiful jeweled gold bracelet and ring set to have his opinion and potential for resale. He was very jovial, expressed enthusiasm and promised to look at it over the next three days. We came back after four days and he said he had not had the time and told us to come back in about 4 more days. We went back and he apologized again and said he had been very busy and he needed a little more time. OK, yet again we went to the store and we were told to come back in 15 minutes. We came back and he was with another customer. When he did come to us he told us he still needed more time and that either we waited more time or we could take our jewelry. No apologies, and a rush to dismiss us quickly. A total reversal in attitude! A warning to other customers... be aware that if you ask for services here you might be waiting for nothing! I stopped in yesterday to sell a vintage wedding set (from my family). It was purchased 43 yrs. ago from Bowers Jewelers. I even had the original appraisal with me. I had to approach the first saleswoman, who seemed to be avoiding me (I'm white, well-dressed and well-off). Turns out they don't have a license to legally BUY jewelry. By the time I left, all 4 women staff in the store managed to rub me the wrong way. Yet, they sell Estate Jewelry--those pieces are technically "used," aren't they. FINE--tell me you don't BUY, but don't insult me by suggesting I go to a pawn shop--seriously? For a diamond worth at least $4,000. Why not recommend a nearby jeweler who does buy. I found one on Prospect. The Bowers staff does a poor job of representing the owners. read more
