Box Hill is officially in my top 3 of best crab cakes in the area. I just need to go back to Koco's and see which one is my official number 1. For those that are curious, I'm comparing Box Hill to Koco's in Baltimore and Pappas in Glen Burnie. If you're from the area you know exactly what I'm talking about. So of course we had to order the pizza. The pizza... Wow. We had the Boxhill deluxe which was everything on the pizza. Ingredients from the meats to the cheese were so fresh. The sauce was perfect for the toppings, and the CRUST... perfect amount of crust and not too thick. I never had New England pizza and never knew what it was till now. Real game changer. If you like crab cakes, this is a must go to spot. These were probably the best authentic, no filler crab cakes I've ever had. We ordered to go so I can't speak to service but the spot looks very casual and they're open late night. Coming from out of town I was looking for good crab cakes with crab chunks and this didn't disappoint. I finally tried this place! I have a friend who swears by this place and today was my time to shine. I ordered my food online. Super easy process. I ordered a broiled crab cake and fries. I was quoted 30 minutes, ready in 15. As I entered, there was a sweet lady behind the front counter who assisted me. I received my food. The fries looked amazing. They weren't. The fries came out w 3 different heating levels, 4 different textures. It was so annoying to eat. I had an hour drive ahead of me. I surely didn't have time or energy to return regarding the fries. Coming back here after a lifetime of living in Florida really brought me back to my childhood. I'll get the lowlights out of the way. The Garlic bread was nothing spectacular and the self service Coke Freestyle machine while full of options, was always far too packed to get a drink as it was the only station. I came here based on the recommendation of a local food influencer who has made some great recommendations over the years.. Unfortunately, this was a long drive for very average food and less than stellar service. I started with the crab tater tots. When they arrived, they were covered in bacon. I don't eat pork, and there was nothing on the menu indicating that this dish would be topped with bacon. When I inform the server that I could not eat this dish because I don't eat pork, she just stared at me awkwardly, as if unsure what to do. There was no apology, no immediate offer to remake the dish, no proactive solution. After an uncomfortably long and awkward pause, my dining companion offered to take them home since she eats pork. That should not have been the default outcome. The staff should have taken the dish back and asked if we'd like something else instead. The interaction felt odd and unwelcoming. Additionally, the server communicated in a tone that felt strangely condescending, almost like an HR script rather than genuine hospitality. That was incredibly off-putting. I then placed an order for the crab fries and specifically asked them to make sure there was no bacon. Less than two minutes later, the server returned with our entrees. I then asked if the crab fries could be canceled since I didn't want an appetizer arriving after my entrée. In that same condescending tone, she said they had already started the order. No problem. I had no issue with the timing, But I very much had an issue with lack of professionalism and basic customer service demonstrated throughout the experience. As for the food, the crab fries were okay, but I don't know why they use waffle fries as opposed to their regular fries for this dish.. Their regular fries taste much better and would have been a better choice for the crab fries. If anything, give guests the choice of which they prefer. I had the regular fries with my crab cake (Even though I ordered the Greek salad as a side) and enjoyed them much more than the waffle fries. The crab cakes were impressively large. Unfortunately, they were severely under-seasoned. I'm grateful there was Old Bay on the table because I had to add it to nearly every bite just to give it some flavor. I ordered one broiled and one fried crab cake. The fried version was coated in a thick layer of breading that created a heavy outer shell. I've never had a crab cake with that much crust, and it overpowered the crab rather than complementing it. Oddly enough, the leftovers tasted slightly better after reheating. The crust softened and the flavor came through a bit more. Even then, it still needed a generous amount of Old Bay. Overall, the portion sizes were solid, but the lack of seasoning and the unprofessional service made this one a miss for me. read more

The first restaurant I tried in my first trip to Maryland - my husband and his family used to go here all the time when they lived up here, and said this was a must-do. By far the best crab cake I've had in my entire Baltimore trip *note below. Box Hill's crab cake is the least amount of filler I've had after trying 4-5 different crab cakes this week. The jumbo lump crab was super high quality, the texture of the crab cake was impeccable, BUT: it came to the table completely unseasoned. Luckily there was old bay on the table to dump onto it, so as long as you're okay with seasoning it yourself, it really is a GREAT crab cake in terms of cook/texture/less filler. The garlic bread was pretty bland and was more like buttered bread, but I didn't come here for that. Disclaimer: I didn't end up trying the pizza myself but we did order it to share - I just got super full off of the crab cake itself. We got pepperoni and mushroom and the crust looked GREAT! My one complaint about the pizza, again without having tried it, is that the mushrooms weren't baked on, it was really just canned mushrooms with the liquid from the can dumped onto the pizza as a topping. Please bake them on the pizza!!! This restaurant uses a Coke Freestyle machine (I'm the biggest hater of this) and was super syrup-y/not very fresh. Service was decent and everyone was nice. Who doesn't love a good crabcake? Came here to try theirs, based on the hype. Met a friend here for lunch and managed to get a table right away. Unfortunately, it was in the center section of tables, which was a bit crammed together and uncomfortable. I asked the server for the beer/wine list and she said, "I'm your beer/wine list." She then proceeded to rattle off the varieties of beer they had on draught (only two, and both disappointing), and bottle/can. Unfortunately, for the "local" brands, she only said she had a "local cream ale, local sour" etc. It would have been helpful to know what the "local" brands were. And really. Is it so hard to have a written list of your beers/wines? You printed a separate piece of paper with specials. It would be easy to incorporate and there is no excuse for not doing so. Service was reasonably attentive. But the "get your own" water/fountain beverages is just laziness. If you are providing table service, then provide table service. The food? Ah, the food. Some of the things we ordered (calamari) were enjoyed, though it was standard pub grub. Nothing special. The Greek salad that accompanied my crabcake was large, though the dressing offered was incredibly sweet. Why add so much sugar? And the crabcake? Ah, the crabcake. It was big, I'll give them that. And there were some pieces of jumbo lump crabmeat in there. But there was a LOT of filler. When we left, there was a long line of people waiting to be seated. Their food is wonderful and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food portion sizes were well worth the price. The crabcakes are filled with huge portions of lump crab meat. The dishes were very flavorful. Their gravy is like "Frank's Hot Sauce," you can put that on everything! I had the crabcake platter for two with fries and cole slaw. We had the southern fried flounder with coleslaw and upgraded the fries to onions. The italian bread and the and the Italian dressing is such a good pairing that we decided to buy two bottles for the road. Box Hill is probably known best for their pizza and crab cakes. On this Saturday afternoon, there was no wait and we were immediately seated upon entering. Not seeing what I was craving on the menu, I kindly asked the server if the kitchen could accommodate a special request - a smash burger. She assured me that it wouldn't be a problem. Shortly after placing the order, our food arrived. What was presented was a behemoth double cheeseburger, not the smash burger that I anticipated. Either way, it was hot and delicious, as were the accompanying fries. My guest had the fish and chips, which was also quite satisfying. The restaurant was clean and inviting. Box Hill is a Harford County, MD institution and it's just as good as I remember. When our kids were young, we used to frequent Box Hill on Fridays for pizza and they used to do crab cakes once in a while. It was simply a carry out place. Boy how things have changed. This is now a really clean, simply designed, dine- in restaurant with an expanded menu and everything is top notch. We were seated and waiting on immediately. The food came out very quickly as well. You help yourself to the Coke machine in the middle of the restaurant. I got the small crab cakes (4oz) and fries. The fries, as an aside, are fantastic. Crispy, salty, fresh. I had my crab cakes broiled. You can order them fries as well. These are full of crab meat, little to no filler at all. Delicious. You do have to season yourself if you like old bay, I did. It's obvious why they're known for their crab cakes. I really like their pizza. It does flop, the crust is thick. The crust is also delicious. It's neither New York or Chicago style, it's Box Hill style and I've always loved it. If you're ever in MD or simply traveling north, I highly suggest to go to Box Hill. Had a wonderful dinner tonight with my family after visiting Longwood Gardens. We ordered onion rings, calamari, crab cake platters, cheese steak, Greek salad (I love how they bring a whole bottle of salad dressing to the table!), and a deluxe pizza. Their crab cakes are the BEST I've had and I can honestly say they are better than G&M's, which has been my favorites for years. Everything else was great also, but I must admit that the deluxe pizza was not my favorite. Way too much topping and not enough flavor, but still decent. Our server, Ashley, was fantastic, which made the experience much better. Oh, they also have a small selection of house wines and basic beers. I got a glass of Cabernet and it was pretty good. Oh my word! This place is phenomenal. Our server was so friendly and helpful and we heard her helping other tables order strategically to save them money (older folks). But then there's the food. We were starving when we arrived, as we had been hiking up at Kilgore falls. She took our order and got us some garlic bread right away, which we devoured. She recommended dipping in the house-made Greek dressing, which was so tasty! We ordered some shrimp tacos and a large crabcake to share, both of which came with fries and coleslaw. The tacos were really good, the fries were nice, the coleslaw was very well made, but that crabcake -- MAN was it incredible. Huge chunks of crab held together by a creamy and tasty mixture, and make no mistake, there is a ton more meat than anything else. We got ours broiled rather than fried and it was excellent. After we ate, our server asked if we wanted to buy a bottle of the Greek dressing, and we said we would but it might not stay cold on the drive home (we live almost 1.5 hours away). She packed it in a bag with cold packs for us! The only momentary disappointment was when the soda machine ran out of ice and we had to wait for them to refill it, but that's going to happen sometimes. I loved having refill access to the Coke Freestyle machine at all times. This place is just 10/10. Our friends had been raving about this restaurant, and we decided to meet there for lunch. They were right. Box Hill was a bright and cheerful restaurant that obviously does a brisk lunch business. Two in our group ordered the 4 oz crab cake with French fries and Cole slaw, I had shrimp salad on a bed of lettuce with tomato, and our friend had a turkey sandwich with French fries and Cole slaw. I title this review, Celebrity Status The first time I went to this place was on Mother's Day [2025]. It was jammed packed. People everywhere and from everywhere. I overheard a lady tell the cashier that she came from Virginia for their crab cakes. My mother wanted a 8oz Crab Cake Special [platter] with Fries and Slaw. Another must do stop on our visit to Maryland. This was our neighborhood pizza place when we lived in Abingdon and our kids were little. Back then, the crab cakes were a Friday or weekend special only and the inside dining was small. The inside dining is bright, open and comfortable and they have sidewalk patio dining available too. We each ordered a crab cakes, some with fries and one crab cake BLT. We also ordered a pizza for the group (and to take leftovers back to our Airbnb In Baltimore). The crab cakes can be fried or broiled, I preferred broiled and the 4oz. size was plenty. Enormous pieces of crab inside with very little filler. I added a few sprinkles of old bay from the table shaker and it was yummy. The pizza took us back, crunchy and doughy crust that tastes just as we remembered.
