While passing through on our way to NJ, we hit the jackpot here at Box Hill! Not only are the crab cakes delicious but their eggplant parm sandwich is the best I've had in a long time. My hubby and I stopped by Box Hill Crab Cakes on our cross-country road trip while passing through Maryland. The establishment has a large dine in area, but also seems to have many patrons who order takeout. The staff at the front were super friendly and welcoming. The kitchen staff hustled and did a great job of pumping out orders to ensure the wait time was low. We enjoyed interacting with all of the staff in the ordering area and enjoyed our food even more! Our order consisted of two (massive) crab cakes and an order of crab fries. Let's start off by stating that the most important fact: the crab used in our meal was FANTASTIC! Our crab cakes were like no other. Large with lumps and lumps of crab. The crab fries were perfectly crispy waffle fries topped with an amazing mix of cheesy crab goodness. The menu initially seemed pricey, but it totally makes sense as the amount of crab and food give was beyond generous and delicious. We are still talking about it weeks later. If we ever find our way back to Maryland, we will definitely be back at Box Hill! I saw a Guy do a Review on Instagram and he highly recommended. I wanted to try them, lucky for me I had to come out this way today because I live almost an Hour's drive away. I ordered the 8 oz. Crab Cake with a Greek Salad, it comes with Garlic Bread also. It was good, nice and meaty with plenty of Lump Crabmeat, the Greek Salad was ok, didn't like that the Kalamata Olives in it wasn't pitted, so when you bite into one you are biting into a hard seed. As soon as you enter, the Carryout is right there and the Dining area is in the back if you are dining in, they also have outside seating. The Staff was polite. It's not often that I'm in the Bel Air area. After getting my wedding ring cleaned, I decided to stop by for a crab cake sandwich! The Yelp photos were very convincing and I love an authentic crab cake. The restaurant was easy to find. There's outside seating, a to-go section, and the dining room is in the back. I decided to dine in the dining room area which was pretty packed and I was seated right away. Bianca Z greeted me with a smile and explained the service set up right away. She showed me the self serve drink station and came back to take my order after I returned to my table. I ordered the 8oz crab cake platter (broiled) w/ the fries and cole slaw. A short while later, my order arrived and I enjoyed. The jumbo lump crab was very present throughout! Ok, so this review for this restaurant is a true treat because, I traveled all the way from Brunswick, MD to try this place. I found out about it because, I follow a "foodie" / restaurant reviewer named, "The Real Food Stalker" on Instagram, and as soon as, I saw his crab cake sandwich and heard him say, "folks, you've gotta give this place a try," I knew that I had to check it out. First and foremost, it's located in a neighborhood shopping center/strip. So, parking spots can fill up quick, but I noticed there were a lot of people picking up takeout orders. So you will likely be able to get a spot. Now, this place was bustling when we arrived there was a line for takeout, and there was a 20-25 minute wait to dine in. We opted to dine in. The crowd was steadily moving in and out, so it legit was a 20-25 minute. The hostess was super friendly, and really on point with keeping up with the influx of customers wanting to put to their name on the list to get the next table. The kitchen staff was working together like a "well-oiled machine," and it was nice to be able to see them cooking while we waited for our table. Once we were seated at our table, we were greeted by Ashley, our waitress. Super nice and she was on point too! I read another review about the drink fountain, and having to fix your own drink. It's pretty busy in there, so I guess it allows for the waitstaff to focus on getting your meal, and you can get your drink yourself. It wasn't too bad though. The garlic bread was soooooo good! It was fresh soft bread with super garlicky butter...mmm mmm mmm! I should've had my crab sandwich bread buttered and toasted with that garlic butter. The food was so good! I thoroughly enjoyed my 8 oz. crab cake sandwich. The photos don't do this sandwich justice! That sandwich is huge! I couldn't even eat it all. I brought half of it home! With that said, it was everything that I was expecting, and more! The fries were hot and fresh! I'm from the south and back home we make and eat our coleslaw with a "sweet" taste. I was so happy because, their coleslaw reminded me of home, specifically, it reminded me of my Mom's coleslaw and "Libby Hill's" coleslaw. IYKYK! The tarter sauce was also very good. I didn't really care for the cocktail sauce because, it had a weird taste/flavor. I think some weird alcohol was added, maybe not, I just didn't really like it. The only suggestion my hubby and I had was that we wished the crab cakes would've had Old Bay seasoning on it, and have some Old Bay Hot Sauce. Being in MD, you've gotta have the Old Bay on tap and queued up! Finally, I even ordered the chocolate cake...to go because, I was so stuffed! Overall everything was delicious, it was worth making the trek out here, and the restaurant staff was friendly, helpful, and efficient! Great service and quality of food! The cream of crab soup had humongous lumps of crab and perfect seasoning. They gave us a rubix cube and flashcards for play since we are kids and we were bored. The crab fries were probably the best I've had in my life 10/10 would recommend. Also the drinks are self serve even though it might not be amazing I could make a fun drink with 4 lemons! Alright good people, pull up a seat for story time. I used to live in this town. Please understand that Marylanders are serious about their crab cakes. Everyone's got their favorite, and there's fierce loyalty to restaurants. It's kind of a regional delicacy, and an expensive one, too. The best ones are made from "jumbo lump" meat, which comes from the crab's swimming muscle. Each handpicked lump is maybe a tablespoon in volume, and one cake may need 10-15 crabs worth of meat. Harford County, northeast of Baltimore, is not super in touch with the crabbing culture that extends further south on the Chesapeake. Thankfully, Box Hill Pizzeria (named after the neighborhood) has loomed over the county's crab cake preferences for several decades. It is impossible to describe just how beloved this place is. Every time I've visited in the last 25 years the dining room is packed solid. Back in the 90s, my Catholic high school's Latin teacher would collect money from us, pick them up, and we would have crab cake lunches while reciting a little Pater Noster. It was the way of things. I went back while visiting for Thanksgiving. The adults ordered 8oz cakes; they were broiled and served simply with crackers and lemon. Kids had pizza; BHP serves a nice Greek New England-style pie with a focaccia-ish textured crust. The cakes were as I remember, with very many of those precious lumps, limited filler, just enough binder. They go easy on the spices; crab meat has a nice delicate flavor and is really a star if not over-seasoned. Cast a glance around the dining room, hear the happy voices and see that so many eyes are rolling back in abject pleasure. If the seafood world has something better, I haven't found it. read more

We drove through Northern Maryland and tried this place known for its crab cakes. My wife and I split an 8 ounce crab cake platter, crab soup, and sandwich. Everything was absolutely delicious, and this may have been the best crab chowder soup I've ever had. Portions of just about the entire menu are quite big, and the kids meals were also great value, hence the splurge for crab cakes wasn't all that expensive for the total bill. When you walk in and see the carry out counter you're kind of thrown off but there's a restaurant in the back. The service was excellent. The crab dip over fries was delicious.
