While waiting on a furniture delivery from North Carolina we decided to get some quick food we could eat at home. Boxcar Betty's sounded like it fit the bill. It sure did. The pimento cheese chicken sandwich with homemade pickles and peach salsa was tasty but I'm more of a purist so I don't want or need that many flavors on my sammie. I chose the smash burger and it was delicious. I dont usually love a smash burger because I think they are crunchy , but this one was not . So I was happy. Thought the fries were outstanding but they were pretty much dumped out in the bag. They got home hot so that's all that matters. It was clean and everything was cooked to order. We ordered takeout after one of my shifts on a recommendation from a friend. It's chicken or smash burgers so dealers choice. My wife had the fried chicken sandwich which was ok, I had the smash burger and a side of the grilled chicken. After completing a 100 mile bike ride for Ride the low county we were starving and decided we I try this place. The menu is self explanatory and offered great choices. The server was very helpful and allowed my hubby to try the Kentucky beer cheese spread before ordering. She had an awesome personality and was very patient. We had the chicken sandwich with the bacon jam, the one with the peach slaw and the buffalo chicken sandwich. I liked the Peach slaw one the best, but they were all good. The fries were also good, hot crispy and fresh (and a huge portion), but you could skip them and go right for the pickles...they were that good. Not sure what the connection this place and pasture & grain (The salad place next door) has to macarons (the french cookie), but they both serve them, they were okay. served too cold for my taste. Walking over from the hotel for lunch I tried the chicken boxcar sandwich with Pimiento Cheese, Peach Slaw, House Pickles, and Spicy Mayo. There are 3 main sandwich choices that are very popular on the menu. You have 3 protein options and choices on how you want them prepared. Since chicken is so popular here and having it fried is the way to go, that's the way I went. Good call BTW. Super friendly and helpful staff. Options to sit inside and out, both of them kept very clean, made this a solid call choice for lunch. For the side I tried the sweet potato fries. That was the only downer. You may find the sugarcoated sweet fries to your liking but, as much as I'd like things sweet, these were a little off for me. Oh yeah, the sweet tea is perfect. read more

The food is meh. The chicken tenders are small for more than $1 a piece. The BBQ sauce was not appealing, although my son said the tenders tasted okay plain. The fries were not appealing at all and were not worth getting for the $4 we paid for them. The boxcar chicken was the best of all the fare we ordered although the pimento cheese was like cold shredded cheese straight from the fridge and wasn't melted in anyway. The chicken not so waffle was a disappointment. It was not horrible, but at the same time not worth it unfortunately. As we sat there waiting for our youngest to finish his chicken tenders we proceeded to hear profanity from the music that was being streamed - and it wasn't just one lyric as we heard the f bomb dropped multiple times throughout the song. It was a country song and not exactly what we were expecting to hear. Disappointed that they play explicit music in a seemingly family friendly establishment. On the way out we also noticed dried up ketchup splattered on the door on the inside. Not the worst experience we've ever had at a restaurant, but I can't say based on this experience that I would recommend this place. read more

If there was a zero star option, that would be my pick. The customer service was appalling. There is no reason an employee should step outside of their station and accuse a customer of abusing their child without proper cause. Especially when they had no way of actually noticing what was happening. My husband had set our child into the booth seat, hands on her thighs, trying to speak with her and calm her down. She had thrown herself down onto their floor pitching a fit. She is a small child, and they will have tantrums. She was not being hurt by my husband, as he barely had pressure on her legs, just enough to hold her steady so she didn't throw herself down into the floor another time and hurt herself. I do not appreciate the comments made by the female employee, nor how we watched her go to the back of house and loudly telling the other staff members about how my husband abused our child. Way to make your customers feel welcome. we will not be returning, thanks for the most appalling first visit to a restaurant we have ever experienced. read more

Whoa, this should've been a contender during the Chick-Fil-A vs Popeye's Chicken Sandwich-gate over the summer of 2019. It would have been the clear winner! I've heard of Boxcar Betty's but I finally had a chance to check it out tonight. I decided to go for the Chicken "Not So Waffle" sandwich. The combo of pimiento cheese and maple syrup with the fried chicken (a huge chicken breast) is divine! I wish I'd ordered fries too but I could only get down half of my sandwich, and wouldn't have had much room for the fries too. Next time, I'll strategize better. This will be my third review of a Boxcar Betty's now, and I STILL have nothing but good things to say. Boxcar Betty's has truly mastered providing consistently good food at great prices. It's really amazing to see that opening two new locations has not made any dip in quality. Just as I love the Savannah Highway and North Charleston locations, the Mount Pleasant location I love too. This location offers more parking than Savannah Highway, and is the second biggest on the inside behind the North Charleston location. The boxcar sandwich is still my favorite, still juicy and delicious. (The vegetarian portobello mushroom sandwich is tasty too). With three locations now all over town, you really have no excuse not to go! read more
