Planning a visit, our third (or is it fourth?), to one of our favorite Oregon wineries, Brandborg, made me check the Yelp site. Surprising to find not a single review of this charming place posted. So I'll "fix" that by adding mine. It's true that the Umpqua Valley wineries don't get the buzz of their Willamette Valley brethren. And when one thinks of Umpqua Valley wineries at all it is likely the (remarkable) Abacela Winery comes to mind. Along perhaps with the (also remarkable) newcomer Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards. Both in Roseburg. It's also true that as locations go, little Elkton (population 170), at the very north end of the Umpqua Valley wine region, may not be on the way to anywhere - except maybe Reedsport. But it is also true that Elkton is nestled in spectacular scenery and is only an hour from Eugene to the north and less than that from Roseburg to the south. A perfect "tucker" (to use my husband's word) of a location for a wonderful wine tasting experience. The geography of Elkton provides some of the coolest temperature growing conditions of all of Oregon's wine making regions. Brandborg is leveraging that, along with many years of grape growing and wine making expertise and a passion for perfection, to produce some stellar wines. They pour samples of their wine in their delightful, and easily accessible for all people, tasting room right in downtown Elkton. So, really good wines, really nice people, and a really cool tasting room can be found here. Yes, Brandborg DOES produce Pinot Nor, as do many - if not most - wineries in Oregon. I'm a fan of Brandborg bottlings. , "...farming on the edge...", as they call it in terms of climate, "... "is what always gives the most distinctive grapes, stretching the ripening curve to the very last minute." Both my husband and I like the Bench Lands PN very much and the Ferris Wheel Vineyards PN. But for me, the standout wines for Brandborg are their whites; in particular their Riesling and Gewurztraminer. They also bottle Pinot Gris and the (underappreciated varietal in my opinion) Pinot Blanc. I hope they'll be pouring some of the latter when we when we visit the tasting room in a couple of weeks as we haven't tried it yet. As additional tips: When you visit Brandborg tasting room, there is also the advantage of Tomaselli's Pastry Mill and Cafe, open for breakfast lunch and dinner on several days of the week, right across the street for a before or after wine tasting meal. (But that's a different review, coming soon.). There are also two additional winery tasting rooms in Elkton - River's Edge where we have been before and Bradley where we have not. So planning a day's wine and dine and scenery visit to Elkton is not only fun, it is delicious. The drawback? There really aren't significant options for lodging without driving to Eugene (or at least Cottage Grove) going north or Roseburg (or at least Sutherlin) going south.

I find the more awards a winery displays, the less I enjoy their wines. All the wines were fine, but nothing that left us itching to purchase a bottle.

"Miss Tilly" is a pleasantly different king of red wine!

We were actually in Elkton for other reasons and noticed Brandborg Winery across the street. We had a little time, so we went inside. I'm glad we did! They have a comfortable tasting room and friendly, knowledgable people. We tried a number of reds and whites, all good. We came away with a bottle of 2011 "Miss Tilly", an interesting juicy lollipop-sweet red made from Gamay. Very unique! We hope to get back there soon. "Rose's Cafe": http://rosescafe1.blogspot.com

So, my objective was to just find a winery to visit on our way from Newport on the coast to a BnB…read morein the little town of Glide on the South Umpqua River. We had an hour or so to spare before check-in, and I found this highly rated winery on Yelp, so I thought it would be a good place to stop for a break. It was an enjoyable drove along narrow country roads from the main highway in late October, with the trees showing their fall colors and fields of grass waving in the sun. Our GPS guided us to the front entrance, after which it got a bit confused as the paved, one-lane access road wound this way and that. We followed the signs to the tasting room and entered the medium-sized, stonewalled tasting room. We hadn't called ahead for a reservation, given the time of year, but the attendant welcomed us with open arms. He provided a great description of the vintner background, the winery, and the diversity of wines they grow. While I had tasted several Pinot Noirs from the Umpqua Valley, I wasn't aware of the other varietals. The attendant was very accommodating, letting us taste several different wines, especially as my wife is not as interested in wine as I am. I'm not a big fan of most white wines, although they are known for their Grüner Veltliner. I wasn't keen on the GV, but their Sauv Blanc was quite good for a US offering (we both like NZ Sauv Blancs a lot). On the darker side, their Syrah was just okay, but their Tempranillo was the best U.S. example of this varietal that I've ever had, and just a bit below some of the amazing ones I've had the pleasure to taste from Spain. It was so impressive that I decided to sign up for their quarterly wine club, which had been the farthest thing from my mind when I entered, but I've been very impressed with the shipments I've received so far. Lovely wines from a pretty vineyard in the Umpqua Valley of Oregon.

We really enjoyed our time at this winery. The drive up from the main road is absolutely beautiful…read moreand we loved seeing all the animals and beautiful landscape. We also enjoyed walking around to the property. They did a beautiful job creating this winery! We thought we were going to a wine cave, it's not a cave. It's a building that looks like a cave in the inside, but regardless it was beautiful. Our wine attendant was kind and knowledgeable and we really enjoyed talking to him. The food pairing was a nice touch. I found the wines didn't match the atmosphere and were average. We will for sure come back when in the area again.
