Macari first worked for toy manufacturer Hasbro before launching a custom cabinetry business with another former Hasbro colleague. Today he is involved in multiple businesses. For a new venture, Macari decided to open his own brewery with Neveu, another former Hasbro employee. The partners acquired and completely renovated the circa 1872 Berkeley Mill boiler room building to house the brewery. They named it "Phantom Farms" after the Macari family's local apple orchard and bakery just down the road. Oscar Garrido and Andrea Riera, a husband-and-wife team from Chile, were hired as the head brewers. Since opening, Phantom Farms has become known for its farm-to-pint operation, its close connection to its namesake orchard, a historic taproom, and award-winning lagers. I recently visited Phantom Farms Brewing while I was in town for the day. I was scheduled to meet up with some other beer bloggers. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the restored historic building was. There was plenty of space upstairs and downstairs, indoors and outdoors, and the brewery is also family-friendly. After exploring all of the various rooms, I looked over the draught menu. There was an eclectic mix of beer styles as well as hard cider crafted with apples from the Phantom Farms Orchard. Between mingling with the other bloggers and playing some games of Biñho, I enjoyed pours of "Half Dark" (Czech Amber Lager), "Elegant Viking" (New England IPA), "Alternate Continuum" (Barrel-Aged Saison), and "Hypernova" (Barleywine). I was very impressed with everything that I tried, especially the last two. Between an excellent roster of beers, a beautiful historic space, and some excellent company, I had a really enjoyable experience at Phantom Farms and I highly recommend them to any craft beer aficionados who are visiting the area!

That didn't stop us from devouring the whole thing though, it definitely was not bad. Ambience is chill with music playing at a lower volume. Mostly couples and small, chill groups in the spot. There was one small group with a baby but the baby was not overly loud or disruptive. Outdoor seating is available but we opted to be inside with the AC. Bartender seemed to be the only employee working both the tables and the bar and a little overwhelmed, so service was a bit slow. The brewery was very busy and the line was long, with slower wait times, but the food and drinks were worth it. The buffalo chicken tenders were great quality, not overly spicy or salty, and came with a chunky, house-made blue cheese dressing. The bacon cheesy fries were a standout. The beer cheese was perfectly smooth and flavorful, topped with crumbled bacon and thinly sliced purple onion, which was surprisingly really good. I also tried the pomegranate Down East cider, a flavor I hadn't seen anywhere else, and it was my favorite I've had so far. Atmosphere was decent but on the smaller side. It's located right at the entrance of an industrial area. There is a very small lot for parking but it was completely full when we visited today, so we parked along the road where a number of other cars were also parked. We saw they had a food truck, Farm to Sandwich, which although kind of pricey, was super delicious. We both got the All American Smash burger with fries. Fries were so crisp and well crafted and the burger was amazing with a great sauce reminiscent of a Big Mac. For beers, since it was our first time here, we decided to try a bit of everything with flights. Their flights are $13 for 4, 5 oz pours. I chose the Coffee Milk Stout, You are Such an Ass, Bienvenu and Justin's Jangle. We started which the You are Such an Ass IPA, which was described as a light IPA but really didn't taste like an IPA at all. We honestly thought they had poured us the wrong beer. As IPA enthusiasts, this was disappointing. The Bienvenu, which is a Red Ale with Panela (unrefined Colombian sugar cane) was infinitely better. The Coffee Milk Stout, I understand is very popular, but I thought this was average. Justin's Jangle, a Maple Praline Porter was my favorite! Really nice, complex brew! We also really enjoyed the live music from Jake Frezza, a local musician out of North Providence. He sang and played guitar and covered a diverse sampling of songs including Brittney Spears (Toxic), James Taylor and Marvin Gaye. His version of "What's Going On" was particularly excellent. I normally dread listening to live performers at breweries but this guy is actually very talented! Kudos to Ravenous for engaging such a high quality musician! They have had fundraisers and music there often. There is a nice outside area , perfect for the nice weather coming. They usually have a food truck or you can bring your own. The beers are always reliable. They have had the bievenuto red and coffee stout as long as I can remember. There is always a good amount of choices , if you don't enjoy those flavors as much as I do. At the door, we were stopped immediately & asked "do you have tickets" with no explanation to which we answered no. We were then told that the show inside was a ticketed show & therefore we couldn't come in. We explained that we were just there for dinner. The door person said we could order food out on the patio if we insisted, accidentally hitting me in the face as she was gesturing. So we maneuvered our way through the busy bar to the patio out back to scope out the scene. There were a few available picnic tables, so my group claimed one of them as I headed to the bar. I asked the bartender "can we order food here with you?" to which she answered yes, while eyeing me up & down. I asked for a few menus & 4 glasses of water for my group. The bartender instead gave me 4 bottles of water. Ugh. Back at our picnic table, I remarked out loud to my group "do I have something on my face?" because from the moment we entered the tavern, I felt like everyone (both staff & patrons) was examining me like a bug under a microscope. We fell into hangry silence as we checked out the menu & I noticed immediately that there were no allergy markings anywhere on the menu. I can't have gluten. It makes me very sick. I'm not happy about that - believe me! One of the greatest tragedies of my life was learning that I couldn't drink beer anymore. The menu is mostly pub classics & I really wanted a burger (I saw recently that Cady's Tavern was listed on a Yelp Collection for great burgers in the state). The menu said to "advise" my server of "any food allergies" & so I returned to the bar to ask about gluten-free accommodations. I explained the situation & asked very politely if there was anything they could do so that I could have the burger. I really miss being low-maintenance, but I know (having worked in the service industry for 15 years) that major changes are happening surrounding allergy awareness & accommodations. I've had burgers on lettuce "buns," burgers without buns, burgers on gluten-free buns, & other creative modifications at the most unlikely of places. So when I politely asked the bartender if they could modify the order because of my situation, she reacted like I had asked her the most outlandish question imaginable. She looked me up & down again, let out a rude "pffft" & said, "we don't do that kind of stuff here." I said "oh, okay" & walked away. I was shocked. I relayed the interaction to my group & we decided that we had no interest in ordering food. We paid for our bottles of water (UGH!) at $2 each & made our way back through the stuffy bar & out to the (unpaved) parking lot. The feeling that Cady's Tavern gave me was really horrible. The covert judgement, the overt impudence, & the implications on food safety & allergy awareness left me with a pit in my stomach. I always try to give businesses & their employees the benefit of the doubt when things go awry, but I don't think I can do that here.
