I visited this beer store a few blocks from Columbus Circle. today because I was looking for Great Lakes Christmas Ale in a can, and this was the only beer store in Manhattan that sold it to go. I ended up buying much more than Great Lakes! The craft beer selection is incredible and so well organized by John, aka "The Beer Guy." I talked to him for 20 minutes, and his knowledge of beer is comprehensive, and he can leverage that into obtaining unique craft beers that no one else in Manhattan has. The food in the picture presented looks delicious right? This was the realest example of false advertising I've ever seen. Not only was most of the food cold and unseasoned but we were also given inaccurate information when asking about the price prior to buying the food. We were told each container was 7.99 and came with a complimentary drink, as many buffets do. When we got to the counter, however, both servings totaled nearly 40 dollars including the drinks. Not only was I bamboozled at the overall unappetizing food, I had half a mind to request it be made over again. Also they have a decent hot bar and the staff is really nice. The produce section is surprisingly large for a deli, and cheap. More importantly they sell beers from Grimm. Buffets in New York City are not like buffets in Silicon Valley, where you pay a fixed price, and eat all you can. New York City buffets are where you pay by the pound -weight of the food not of your self! We were staying at our timeshare on 200 West 56th near Central Park, and we had already tried Morton Williams buffet on 57th street, at $8 a pound for prepared food in their salad bar. We went into Bread and Honey on 8th ave, just to check out the place. Huge boofay, as Brian S of Warwick, CT would say. $8.09 per pound for a cold buffet, $8.29 per pound for a hot prepared foods buffet, and $8.49 per pound for raw food to be stir fried on the spot. I got the usual beef stew -mainly potatoes and carrots after earlier customers had cherry picked the beef - some white fish, beef, shrimp with noodles, from the hot prepared food area. Very few places serve shrimp in their buffets in New York City. Wife got noodles, shrimp, raw beef, and vegetables put into a bowl, covered with a layer of sauce. The bowl is emptied onto a very large cooking surface, where an employee uses the largest pair of chopsticks I have ever seen to stir fry the food. Both of us got a good portion of vegetables and starches to go with our meats and seafood, and didn't cherry pick the shrimp, like my opportunist ex-wife from Hong Kong would have done! We go out the door for about $20 after tax, for two very hearty dishes of food. Yes, they do have a place for you to eat the food on premises. Place we will have to try next time is Whole Foods Market on Columbus Circle, but twice the distance walking from our timeshare -hey we need the exercise!. Bread & Honey open 6am to midnight, and the 24/7 buffets cater to the millions of workers who commute by subway and train to their workplaces in Manhattan. It such an expensive place to live that both spouses work, and with the lengthy commutes, nobody has time to cook dinners. So they bring home their cooked food from these buffets. This was the last time we tried dinner buffets. Wife got tired of being treated like a commuter, and wanted to be treated like a hot date when we first met 15 years ago. We stopped by here for takeout and had a really positive experience. I ordered a dairy and gluten free omelette and my boyfriend ordered a New York bagel with everything on it. I really enjoyed the omelette and thought it was one of the better breakfast items I had while visiting New York City and my boyfriend really liked his egg bagel sandwich. Solid mini grocery, convenience store! I stumbled in here in dire need of some cup 'o noodles when I was feeling sick one night. I had a group of 16 students. We were trying to find them a place for breakfast that was affordable. I thought I had found a good option the first few days but we found bread and honey on our last morning. The kids loved it. It was much more affordable than similar places. One kid got a burger, one had an oatmeal bowl, noodles, eggs and sausage, muffins. I had an almond croissant and a large latte for less than 9 bucks and it was the best cup of coffee I had the whole week. We never bothered searching for one in the city only to find out how silly we were! We visited Bread and Honey just to try out their Mongolian BBQ and let me tell you, this is a fantastic find! 3 simple steps, pick your ingredients, pick your sauce and hand it to the grill-man ;-) ... We happened to walk into this place while looking for a place to eat. It doesn't look like much but the freshly prepared food was amazing. That was the best burrito and the best quesadilla I have ever had in my life from coast to coast and on any continent. My wife had the noodles and loved them very much also. There's not a lot to rave about the quality of these multi-cuisine, multi-function food establishments. What we can rave about is the variety. There's a grocery market, buffet, ready-made-meals, and food served to order. That alone does not make this place stand out. You know there are plenty of establishments like this all over New York. I can't speak for the food during lunch (since my job provides catered lunches), but I do love that I can come in early in the morning and make my own fresh fruit salad. The fruit is fresh! What I love even more...Asian food in the morning! Yes, I can get my Jap Chae (Korean glass noodles), sautéed tofu, and kimchee at 8 in the morning! Ran into this place ravenously hungry because we were looking for a fast place to pop in before the Metropolitan Opera. Although their "kimchi" and "Texas" burgers look good on the pictures, they cook using a frozen patty and the ingredients don't come together too well. On the plus side, the place is open 24 hours. Their bibimbap also looked good so I probably should have gone with my instict and ordered that instead. I also had a few things from the buffet too at $7.99/lb and it wasn't tasty at all. So I walked by this place with one of my best friends and was all like, "AHHHHH!! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!" and her response was, "EWWW, years ago that place used to be really crappy!". Well kids, that must have been years ago because my first time in here was this February and now I'm pretty much a regular (despite sometimes going with my boss and leaving my cell phone on my work desk, thus not checking in on Yelp...ughhhhhhhh). I haven't tried their hot or cold bar food, no reason for me to go out of my way when my job's cafeteria hot and cold bars are fantastic - but what I do come here for is there awesome selection of Chinese, Korean and Japanese foods! They've got different varieties of delicious sea weed snacks, delicious varieties of Pocky and Panda cookies and my personal favorite - a really, really awesome selection of frozen Asian foods. We're talking frozen spring rolls, dumplings (pork, shrimp, veggie - you name it!), shumai (pretty sure I've seen pork and veggie here), all sorts of noodles, frozen Takoyaki balls (which I've bought and made here, they don't hold a candle to the real thing but they're still pretty good when bought to a friend's house, popped into a microwave (since their oven no longer works after I tried to make brownies and didn't notice she had 1 tupperware container stored in her stove...le sigh, the struggle) and served with soy sauce or light mayo. Wouldn't even be surprised if they even had frozen har gow here, Yum, yum, yum! Prices here are pretty reasonable and considering that they have no frozen Asian cuisine competition in the neighborhood, it's not of them to not go all psycho and overprice everything. Asian foods aside, Bread & Honey also carries tons of cereals - both mainstream and health conscious ones (PUFFINS ya'll!! PUFFINS!! Oh, oh and muesli!) and of course all the other stuff that combination deli/grocery stores carry. Rating this as a beer store, not a supermarket or food place. The beer selection here is small but they get stuff in regularly so no rotational issues. Given that, a great place to stock up on IPAs and other perishable options. They also get new stuff in all the time and keep their BeerMenus account up to date so you know what they have. I usually come for something specific but am always tempted to leave with more. Such is life. What's the issue? They do gouge quite a bit. Wait....are most people rating this place based on their hot foods??? I guess that would make sense considering the "by the pound" section takes up over half of this huge deli. This review is for the grocery section. I haven't tried any of the hot foods but I have to admit, I was drawn in by their advertisements promising Galbi, Ddukbokgee, and Bulgogee. Wait whaaaaat?!? Korean food all the way up here? I had to investigate. Walking in, I noticed it's very similar to a couple of hot food delis in Washington Heights where I live (Shangri LA is a good example), except the selection was a lot more diverse and plentiful. Even better was the fact that they sell a few Korean goods in the grocery aisles! But to my dismay, the prices were marked up due to the location. A very small container of kimchi is around $6 and Golden Curry is also a whopping $6 (dude, it's a big deal. They usually go for around $3 to $4)! I feel like an old lady sometimes. I do so much grocery shopping, I've got all the prices memorized in my head.... I was craving Kimchi so I did succumb to the $6 container. We'll see how it tastes! I'll let ya'll know so that when you're desperate for some Korean flavor, you can make the convenient stop at Bread & Honey. *UPDATE* As promised, I tried the kimchi and am reporting back on the taste. It's definitely not as good as the tub they sell at Han Ah Reum on 32nd in Midtown. It's still pretty newly made so I won't get the real pickled goodness for a week or so.
