WHY?! Why?!?! Why?!?!?!(Tears) I am beyond disappointed. I wait all year for a slice of the best carrot cake and make a special trip just for that. This has been my go to birthday cake spot for many years now. It started with a Mom's weekend in Ogunquit where I fell in love with the carrot cake. It was the ultimate slice of cake, tall- multi layered, moist, full of nuts, covered and filled with smooth and delicious frosting with nut covered outside, big enough slice for leftovers. Well, NOT ANY MORE! Who decided to change all the sliced cakes in to presliced and packaged sheet cake? Not only sheet cake, thin dense layers of cake. They didnt even cut off the exterior part so the cake would bond to the frosting. YUCK! I have never seen carrot cake in sheet cake form, and there is a reason for it.where is the side frosting with nuts? We bought all 5 flavors of cake. Yes $50 worth of cake. All were sheet cake slices. All 5 were slightly over baked, thin, dense layers with the frosting just sitting on top of the layers. There is nothing lovely about a slice of cake that is prepared like a lazy home baker. It's like they don't care. To whoever made the decision to cut corners to make things easier for production or whatever, you have ruined the most delicious cake. It's too bad that person doesn't think the customer deserves the very best slice. Why would someone comeback to buy a full cake after buying that? Bad business decision for you Bread and Roses. I know I will no longer recommend. I guess I will be going back to Whole Foods. The following is the cake discriptions from website... Years ago ( when Bread and Roses was in Ogunquit and had different owners ) it was 5 stars.... I used to take my kids in trr he see for a special treat after the beach on vacation. ... it was the best bakery I'd been to . Now it's sad... almost hidden in Wells.., terrible hours, no bakery to walk in a peruse....you have to order at a window I hit a chocolate raspberry oat bar that was sealed in a commercial package and was soggy and yuk. We stopped at Bread and Roses for coffee and pastries on our way out of Kennebunkport. They seemed popular just based on how many items they were sold out of, but we each had a breakfast sandwich, a spinach and feta croissant and a ham and cheese croissant. They were not stingy with the ham! We wished we asked them to warm them for us but we were in a rush and forgot. Very friendly girls at the window, too. read more

Food: Had a raspberry and cheese croissant which was so good we went back to get another before heading home from vacation! I also grabbed a blueberry grumble bar to take home and I'm hoping it's just as good. Drinks: iced chai latte was good! Probably my favorite I had during the weekend in ogunquit. Food is awful quality and very over priced. Yes, prices have increased. It is not okay to charge $7+ for a cup of disgusting coffee. Food is always either soggy, over cooked, or undercooked. While the staff is friendly, the new owners are not. Melanie is very rude and behaves highly inappropriately for an owner. Reading the responses to other peoples reviews is appalling to me. The ways she addresses negative reviews is embarrassing. The sign by the road is embarrassing. They need to either keep the hours the same for get a new sign for the hours change. Not have a poorly written and barely visible "2" on a white piece of paper taped over the closing time. The new owners clearly don't have the money or customer service to run a proper business. It's very sad because the original owner Mary was the sweetest soul and person you could have ever met. She would always be around to lend a hand to any worker. Or to stop and chat to the customers, always making sure everyone was happy with their purchase. It seems like the new owners sit behind a screen and give orders to the staff now. Came here after attempting to go to Dunkin' and the line was too long there. 10x better food and drinks and much quicker! The parking is a little tight - there is only parking for about 7 cars max, so I'm sure it gets busy peak season. I have wanted to come here before but it was too busy so I drove past. However, now that I know how good it is, I will make more of an effort to come back! My mom always raves about the Carpe Diem coffee they serve. I expected it to taste the same as any other coffee I've had, but it was actually some of the best I've had! I ordered an iced caramel latte (they have dairy alternatives) and I got my mom a hazelnut hot coffee, both were delicious! For food, my mom got a lemon blueberry scone and I got a spinach and cheese croissant. She said it was the best scone she's ever had and appreciated the huge size and Maine blueberries inside. I enjoyed my croissant, but I almost wish I got a plain one. The actual croissant was so delicious and flavorful, but the only flavor I got was spinach. Staff was super nice as well, and I looked inside and saw such a huge variety of baked goods. They told me it was all freshly baked that morning too! We paid premium prices to order a blueberry sour cream coffee cake via Goldbelly. The coffee cake tasted great but there were some technical issues with the cake. You can see it's darker around the edges so it's a bit over baked and all the berries sunk to the bottom. A little disappointed. The delivery was also a day late. Not sure if the issue was with Goldbelly, UPS or Bread and Roses. read more

This is the new location of the highly-rated Bread & Roses bakery that was a few miles south of here on Main St in Ogunquit. This location is also on Route 1 but is being operated as a takeout window only, presumably for safety reasons as the pandemic continues. The window does not face the road, so you have to keep an eye out for it, but there's plenty of free parking in the back. As for the baked goods, where do I begin? I suppose the answer has to start with the Maine blueberry pie, which may be the best blueberry pie I've ever had. The cakes are pretty special, too, and sold by the slice. But then there's the cinnamon butter puffs, the whoopee pies, the croissants, the cookies, the bread... one trip isn't enough. read more

When we visited on a sunny early spring weekend morning, we saw lots of happy people coming and going from here. So folks definitely love them! For us, it was a miss though. Bread & Roses is a from-scratch bakery offering pastries, baked goods, cakes, pies, and more. As of writing this, they are currently open Saturday and Sundays from 8a to 1p for takeout/pickup orders only. When we arrived at 9:30 they were out of quite a few things already (so bummed to miss out on the cinnamon rolls!). What we did get (for nearly $20 after tip) was: 1. A breakfast sandwich with a scrambled egg, a cheese slice, and a veggie sausage patty on a biscuit (we weren't allowed to get it in a croissant, but we see other people have). My partner didn't mind it, but we both agreed every layer was the same very soft texture. Overall it was dry (side note: this was premade, so I'm wondering if that didn't contribute to those things) and quite small for what we paid for compared to other breakfast sandwiches elsewhere. 2. A raspberry/cream cheese croissant. This tasted *exactly* like a Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, so get ready for a throwback to your youth! Would I order it again though? Probably not. 3. A spinach feta croissant. Unfortunately, this was inedible. The croissant was rock hard and the feta and spinach was, for lack of a better word, curdled I guess? We ended up throwing it away. The folks who worked here were super nice though. When they realized they hadn't given us their entire order, they ran across the parking lot to give it to us! Happy for the folks who love it here. And maybe if we had come earlier and tried different things - like the blueberry coffee cake or cinnamon roll - it would have been a different experience! read more

Sept 30, 2021 - "closed for the season" Full disclosure: I'm not a local. I'm from California and I'd recently heard about this bakery through (a random site called) GoldBelly. Since we were set to pass through this quaint town on a coastal road trip, I thought... "why not just wait to check it out in person?" It would have been fantastic had I known in advance that this bakery was closed for the season. Shame on me for only reading the reviews and trusting that the hours of operation on this Yelp page (AND the fact there were no notes from the business owner) indicated that the bakery was in full swing... and for also overlooking the Yelp tip posted earlier this month, sharing the same revelation. Oh well. I won't knock down the business for not updating their Yelp page even though it would have been less of an inconvenience otherwise. I'm sure the pastries are fantastic as others have mentioned. I'll have to try it... someday. To the business owner who manages this Yelp page: My recommendation would be to add a business note providing seasonal closure updates to hopeful patrons (as a business owner, you're able to do this) ... and maybe even updating the business name to include the words "temporarily closed." My wife and I absolutely love this place. We used to go to their storefront in Ogunquit starting many years ago, and while we're sad to see their limited operating hours at the Wells location (compared to before) and the lack of display cases like they used to have, the quality is still top notch and the workers are fantastic. Amazingly delicious breads and pastries, including a phenomenal blueberry crumb loaf and dinner-plate-size choc chip cookies. The outdoor atmosphere and seating is more relaxing in this location and there's plenty of parking, which was definitely a challenge in the old spot. Ogunquit's loss is Wells' gain. Open 7-1, be sure to check this place out - you'll be glad you did. read more

I've only been disappointed one other time and cashier gave me two tso croissants for free. I was happy. But I wrote an email about my last experience. Melanie suggested I look at the croissants before I leave. I just don't find that exceptional for a business. After Melanie's answer I will never go back there and suggest to all others. We haven't been to Ogunquit in a few years, but part of our vacation ritual has always included Bread and Roses. I wax poetic about their pastries and baked goods when I catch wind of anyone planning a trip to Ogunquit. Of course, I had no idea they had closed that location! We made the trip to Wells so we could order our favorites- Carrot Cake for my husband and the Little Lucie for me. The had some tea breads out, so I also grabbed the Lemon one for the road, and I'm so glad I did!! It lasted all of 5 minutes- it was that delicious. We would typically go after dinner to grab dessert, but the Wells location hours were 8a-2p, so we made sure to get there before they closed. So happy they still have that location open. Stopped by for a coffee and bought a whole coffee cake - a Maine blueberry coffee cake! I purchased an iced coffee which was good and strong. They do not have flavored syrups, but did brew me a vanilla flavored coffee and added a packet of sugar and some cream. It was tasty, but you won't find a fancy, super sweet latte here. My husband ordered an iced tea, which he had to add sugar packets to, to sweeten it and said it was a good strong tea. My friend bought a Maine Blueberry lemonade which looked amazing! It was loaded with teeny Maine blueberries and looked and tasted scratch made. The coffee cake was also amazing. It was super moist on the inside and had a crispy sugar/cinnamon outside and a thick layer of a blueberry ribbon throughout. It was the perfect sweetness. You can even order them to be delivered anywhere in the US from Goldbelly, although marked up significantly from the $16 price you'll pay at the stand (I still may order it to be delivered it was that good). Prices here are reasonable, the quality is fantastic and the variety is huge. There is something for everyone at this cute stand in Wells, Maine. Lastly, the service was friendly.
