Making good egg sandwiches has become a lost American Art of late, and Bread and Spread has resurrected it with a vengeance. Have an eggs over easy sandwich with American (or your choice) of cheese and bacon on their delicious -crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside- ciabatta roll and you will know breakfast heaven. In a time where every fancy brunch place is doing ever more outlandish takes on breakfast, it seems like a great bacon egg and cheese sandwich has become a rarity. Love this place. While on my way to Brooklyn Bridge Park, I randomly stumbled upon "Bread & Spread." Besides an attention grabbing name, the steady stream of customers pouring in and out of the restaurant lured me in. They have a decent variety of sandwiches and bowls, including Banmh Mi. Instead of trying what they're known for, which is their more meaty sandwiches, I ordered a BLT on Ciabatta bread per one of the staff member's recommendation which was in contrast to what another staff member who presumably designed the sandwich recommended. The sandwich was both light and filling. Most importantly, it was delicious. The bacon, lettuce, tomato, and bread all tasted fresh. The sandwich cost around $8, which is cheaper than most of their other sandwiches that range around $13. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They all wore masks and had a table containing complimentary hand sanitizer. Additionally, they encouraged customers to wait outside after placing orders. There's several tables outside for outdoor dining. Brooklyn Bridge Park is very close by; so, you can find ample space to eat outside there. Would I go back? Yes, I look forward to exploring more of their menu. read more

Good food... but no love for the veggie folks. Despite having high-quality ingredients and very clever sandwich recipes, Bread & Spread shows little concern for vegetarian customers. I ordered an egg & cheese sandwich and watched the cook, fry-up pork and meat patties next to my eggs. He used the same flipper and gloves to make the sandwich. I understand it might be difficult to separate meat products and the grease fat from these items on a small griddle, but it would have been nice to see them make an effort. In addition, I was charged $2.00 extra for a (1/4) sliver of an avocado. read more

Came in for "The Sandwich", which they don't start serving until 11:00 or 11:30 unfortunately, so I settled for the breakfast sandwich. It comes with a choice of meats (bacon, ham, or turket bacon), spread (pepper aioli, mayo, or garlic spread), and bread (seeded or ciabatta). Additionally you have optional egg, avocado, and veggies. I went with the turkey bacon and pepper aioli on a ciabatta with everything. Not bad at all. It did take a bit longer than I thought it would to make, possibly because my friend and I arrived at 9am on a weekday and the breakfast rush may have been in progress. And the space by the register is a bit tight, so we had to shuffle around to make room for customers while we waited. We ate outside in the area next to the Manhattan Bridge, which was a bit noisy with the constant stream of trains going by. Next time I'd check out the inside seating area. Unfortunately they are closed on weekends and I don't work in the area, so my odds of coming back and trying my preferred sandwich in the near future are slim. read more

I work in the building right above this hidden gem so I come here for a sandwich once every two weeks or so. You won't be disappointed here. My go-to (and their best sandwich without a doubt) is the Porchetta sandwich. It has a good amount of pork (some juicy fat included) in crunchy, toasted ciabatta bun. I can't really recall what else is in it, but it is delicious. You'll easily recognize that it's a high-quality sandwich. I get this sandwich 90% of the time because it's just that good. My back-up is the chicken sandwich here. It's very tasty as well, but it doesn't even come close to the pork sandwich. Note: The Porchetta is the best seller here and it sells out between 1pm-2pm, so come here early if you want to try it. Tip: Call before you go. The veggies were so thinly sliced that nothing fell out of the sandwich upon tight embrace or, you know, biting into the thing. Bread & Spread. Where to begin? I'll start with the name.. LOVE IT. so adorable and striking. My family and I moved to Dumbo and had a very difficult time finding good food let alone a good sandwich. One morning taking our stroll, my son saw the shop and we decided to stop. Good thing we did. My 6 year old who can be picky at times and he said "wow mom, this egg and cheese is really yummy." with the cheese all over his mouth. He got an egg and cheese sandwich and i ordered myself a bacon egg and cheese with a side of home fries we shared. They gave us our sandwiches on a fantastic Ciabatta bread and put a really amazing sort of aioli on mine. ugh! it was so good. Their home fries were red potatoes which I feel is so good while other places use russets so that was a great touch. What I found to be a small problem was.. they've taken the home fries off their menu! Now, that problem could be mine more so than there's hahaha but I'll miss them dearly. Bread & Spread is a great local shop and we love going there. In these trying times they haven't wavered and it's appreciated. Support your local businesses and this one is DEFINITELY one of them! Love this little place. I'm so used to food experiences like this to require some level of crowd-tolerance and line-waiting except for very early morning or right before closing, but for Bread & Spread I've yet to have to wait in any sort of line even at a sane hour of the day. Their sandwiches are big, heavy, warm, and emotionally healing after a rough night out. The little ways that they've made their shop an efficient machine are all very fun. e.g. Your order is written in sharpie on a sandwhich bag which is then the very same bag that you get your order in. Some highlights as I try out different combos of their customized BEC: - Ciabatta - truly something special. It's surprisingly thinner than the usual puffy behemoths I've come to expect with ciabatta. It's beautifully fluffy on the inside but crispy on the outside, and all-around chewy, much like how I've once heard a French Youtuber describe perfect bread. - Multi-grain bread - awesome, and hits the spot when I want something chewy and full of texture from the seeds and rough. - Eggs - They always leave their yolks a little runny which is e x a c t l y the way I always love to have my eggs! - Swiss - Creates a very satisfying stringiness when you first open your sandwich, but from there on I don't know if I taste it much as I get to eating the sandwich. Perhaps I need to order extra cheese if I actually want a gooey experience, or perhaps I need to try one of the other cheeses. - Bacon - WOW. Magical and transformative. It's like another class of sandwich once bacon is added. I always like to make a comment on good service as well. I've seen the same guy behind the counter every time I go, and he's always super nice, obviously believes in the sandwiches here (e.g. was a little surprised the first time I ordered when I didn't say I wanted sauce), and seems to recognize us even though we've only been a few times.
